Facile Assembly of InVO4/TiO2 Heterojunction for Enhanced Photo-Oxidation of Benzyl Alcohol

Carbon Quantum Dots/Cu2O Photocatalyst for Room Temperature Selective Oxidation of Benzyl Alcohol

The luminescence properties and excellent carrier transfer ability of carbon quantum dots (CQDs) have attracted much attention in the field of photocatalysis. In this work, we loaded the CQDs on the surface of Cu2O to enhance the visible-light property of Cu2O. Furthermore, the composite was used for selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde. The composite catalyst achieved high selectivity (90%) for benzaldehyde at room temperature, leveraging its visible-light-induced electron transfer properties and its photocatalytic activity for hydrogen peroxide decomposition. ·OH was shown to be the main reactive oxygen species in the selective oxidation reaction of benzyl alcohol. The formation of heterostructures of CQDs/Cu2O promoted charge carrier separation and provided a fast channel for photoinduced electron transfer. This novel material exhibited enhanced levels of activity and stability for selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol. Potential applications of carbon quantum dot composites in conventional alcohol oxidation reactions are shown.

Integration of high visible-light-driven ternary dual Z-scheme AgVO3-InVO4/g-C3N4 heterojunction nanocomposite for enhanced uranium(VI) photoreduction separation

With deepening application of nuclear power technology, the problem of water ecological environment pollution caused by uranium (U(VI)) is becoming increasingly serious. Photoreduction separation of U(VI) on photocatalysts is considered as an effective strategy to solve uranium pollution. In this work, a novel ternary dual Z-scheme AgVO3-InVO4/g-C3N4 heterojunction (Z-AIGH) nanocomposite with high surface area (73.45 m2 g-1, Z-AIGH2) was designed. The batch adsorption experiment in dark environment showed that Z-AIGH2 nanocomposite had an excellent U(VI) adsorption performance. As for photocatalytic experiments, Z-AIGH2 exhibited a rapid photocatalytic response for separating U(VI) without any organic sacrifice agents. The U(VI) separation rate on Z-AIGH2 nanocomposite was over 98.7% after only 20.0 min visible light irradiation (T = 298 K, CU(Ⅵ) = 10.0 mg L-1, m/V = 0.1 g L-1 and pH = 7.0). Z-AIGH2 nanocomposite also showed good selectivity and cycle stability. The U(VI) removal rate of Z-AIGH2 nanocomposite after fifth cycles was about 96.1% (T = 298 K, CU(Ⅵ) = 10.0 mg L-1, m/V = 0.1 g L-1 and pH = 7.0). High photocatalytic activity of Z-AIGH2 for U(VI) was attributed to the construction of ternary dual Z-scheme heterojunction structure and ant nest-like hole structure. Based on above results, Z-AIGH2 nanocomposite had great potential for water environment renovation.

State of the Art Progress in Copper Vanadate Materials for Solar Water Splitting

The development of a single junction photoelectrode material having specific properties is essential and challenging for the efficient application in solar water splitting for oxygen production and a high value-added product, hydrogen. Moreover, the present material solutions based on binary metal oxides offer limited catalytic activity and hydrogen production efficiency. Therefore, it is paramount to develop and exploit a unique range of materials derived from ternary metal oxides with specifically engineered properties to advance in photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting. Among the ternary oxides, copper vanadates offer promising characteristics, such as a narrow bandgap and catalytic surface properties along with favorable band edges for facile oxygen evolution reaction (OER), which is considered the bottleneck step in performing overall water dissociation. Furthermore, the copper vanadates allow the tuning of the stoichiometry through which a wide range of polymorphs and materials could be obtained. This review provides a complete outlook on the range of copper vanadates and the established synthesis approach, morphology, crystal structure, band edge properties, and PEC characterizations. Mainly, the underlying charge dynamic properties, carrier path length, effect of doping, and influence of surface catalysts are discussed. The review concludes that the advancement toward obtaining low-bandgap materials is a main challenge to overcome the limitations for efficient water dissociation to OER and copper vanadates, which offer a promising solution with their unique properties and advantages. Importantly, intense and strategically focused research is vital to overcome the scientific challenges involved in copper vanadates and to explore and exploit new polymorphs to set new efficiency benchmarks and PEC water splitting solutions.

Variation in Metal-Support Interaction with TiO2 Loading and Synthesis Conditions for Pt-Ti/SBA-15 Active Catalysts in Methane Combustion

The control of catalytic performance using synthesis conditions is one of the main goals of catalytic research. Two series of Pt-Ti/SBA-15 catalysts with different TiO₂ percentages (n = 1, 5, 10, 30 wt.%) were obtained from tetrabutylorthotitanate (TBOT) and peroxotitanate (PT), as titania precursors and Pt impregnation. The obtained catalysts were characterized using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), N₂ sorption, Raman, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), hydrogen temperature-programmed reduction (H₂-TPR) and H₂-chemisorption measurements. Raman spectroscopy showed framework titanium species in low TiO₂ loading samples. The anatase phase was evidenced for samples with higher titania loading, obtained from TBOT, and a mixture of rutile and anatase for those synthesized by PT. The rutile phase prevails in rich TiO₂ catalysts obtained from PT. Variable concentrations of Pt⁰ as a result of the stronger interaction of PtO with anatase and the weaker interaction with rutile were depicted using XPS. TiO₂ loading and precursors influenced the concentration of Pt species, while the effect on Pt nanoparticles' size and uniform distribution on support was insignificant. The Pt/PtO ratio and their concentration on the surface were the result of strong metal-support interaction, and this influenced catalytic performance in the complete oxidation of methane at a low temperature. The highest conversion was obtained for sample prepared from PT with 30% TiO₂.

Facile Synthesis of Nano-Flower β-Bi2O3/TiO2 Heterojunction as Photocatalyst for Degradation RhB

Photocatalysis is a hopeful technology to solve various environmental problems, but it is still a technical task to produce large-scale photocatalysts in a simple and sustainable way. Here, nano-flower β-Bi₂O₃/TiO₂ composites were prepared via a facile solvothermal method, and the photocatalytic performances of β-Bi₂O₃/TiO₂ composites with different Bi/Ti molar ratios were studied. The nano-flower Bi₂O₃/TiO₂ composites were studied by SEM, XRD, XPS, BET, and PL. The PL result proved that the construction of staggered heterojunction enhanced the separation efficiency of carriers. The degradation RhB was applied to study the photocatalytic performances of prepared materials. The results showed that the degradation efficiency of RhB increased from 61.2% to 99.6% when the molar ratio of Bi/Ti was 2.1%. It is a mesoporous approach to enhance photocatalytic properties by forming heterojunction in Bi₂O₃/TiO₂ composites, which increases the separation efficiency of the generated carriers and improves photocatalytic properties. The photoactivity of the Bi₂O₃/TiO₂ has no evident changes after the fifth recovery, indicating that the Bi₂O₃/TiO₂ composite has distinguished stability.

Engineered 2D Metal Oxides for Photocatalysis as Environmental Remediation: A Theoretical Perspective

Modern-day society requires advanced technologies based on renewable and sustainable energy resources to meet environmental remediation challenges. Solar-inspired photocatalytic applications such as water splitting, hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), and carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR) are unique solutions based on green and efficient technologies. Considering the special electronic features and larger surface area, two-dimensional (2D) materials, especially metal oxides (MOs), have been broadly explored for the abovementioned applications in the past few years. However, their photocatalytic potential has not been optimized yet to the level required for practical and commercial applications. Among many strategies available, defect engineering, including cation and anion vacancy creations, can potentially boost the photocatalytic performance of 2D MOs. This mini-review covers recent advancements in 2D engineered materials for various photocatalysis applications such as H2O2 oxidation, HER, and CO2RR for environmental remediation from theoretical perspectives. By thoroughly addressing the fundamental aspects, recent developments, and associated challenges—the author’s recommendations in compliance with future challenges and prospects will pave the way for readers.
