Tunable Dual-Broadband Terahertz Absorber with Vanadium Dioxide Metamaterial

Structures, principles, and properties of metamaterial perfect absorbers

Metamaterials are a kind of artificial material with special properties, showing huge potential for applications in fields such as infrared measurement, solar cells, optical sensors, and optical stealth. A metamaterial perfect absorber (MPA) is designed based on a metamaterial, featuring strong absorption, small volume, light weight, ultra-bandwidth, tunability and other characteristics. This paper introduces the absorption mechanism of MPAs from microwave to optical wave band, and four directions of absorber design are elaborated. Equivalent impedance matching, plasma resonance and interference effect are the main absorption mechanisms of MPA. Multiband perfect absorption, ultra-wideband and ultra-narrowband perfect absorption, polarization and angle insensitive absorption, and dynamically controllable tunable absorption are the main design aspects. Among them, the proposal of a dynamically tunable absorber realizes the dynamic absorption. Finally, the problems and challenges of metamaterial perfect absorber design are discussed.

Broadband Bi-Directional All-Dielectric Transparent Metamaterial Absorber

Water-based absorbers have shown great development potential in the past few years. In this paper, an all-dielectric transparent bi-directional water-based broadband metamaterial absorber is designed. The simulation results indicate that absorptance of the absorber is over 90% in 5.7-41.6 GHz, and its fraction bandwidth is 151.8%. The experimental results are greatly consistent with the simulations. The designed absorber has excellent performances of polarization insensitivity, oblique incidence stability and thermal stability. When the absorptance is more than 0.8, the maximum incident angle reaches 40° in TE mode and is over 60° in TM mode. In 0-80 °C, absorptance of the absorber is hardly changed. Because of the optical transparency of the designed absorber, it can be extensively used in stealth window weapons and electromagnetic compatibility equipment.

A Nonstandard Path Integral Model for Curved Surface Analysis

The nonstandard finite-difference time-domain (NS-FDTD) method is implemented in the differential form on orthogonal grids, hence the benefit of opting for very fine resolutions in order to accurately treat curved surfaces in real-world applications, which indisputably increases the overall computational burden. In particular, these issues can hinder the electromagnetic design of structures with electrically-large size, such as aircrafts. To alleviate this shortcoming, a nonstandard path integral (PI) model for the NS-FDTD method is proposed in this paper, based on the fact that the PI form of Maxwell’s equations is fairly more suitable to treat objects with smooth surfaces than the differential form. The proposed concept uses a pair of basic and complementary path integrals for H-node calculations. Moreover, to attain the desired accuracy level, compared to the NS-FDTD method on square grids, the two path integrals are combined via a set of optimization parameters, determined from the dispersion equation of the PI formula. Through the latter, numerical simulations verify that the new PI model has almost the same modeling precision as the NS-FDTD technique. The featured methodology is applied to several realistic curved structures, which promptly substantiates that the combined use of the featured PI scheme greatly improves the NS-FDTD competences in the case of arbitrarily-shaped objects, modeled by means of coarse orthogonal grids.
