A Review of Applications, Prospects, and Challenges of Proton-Conducting Zirconates in Electrochemical Hydrogen Devices

Synthesis and Characterization of Sol-Gelled Barium Zirconate as Novel MTA Radiopacifiers

Barium zirconate (BaZrO3, BZO), which exhibits superior mechanical, thermal, and chemical stability, has been widely used in many applications. In dentistry, BZO is used as a radiopacifier in mineral trioxide aggregates (MTAs) for endodontic filling applications. In the present study, BZO was prepared using the sol-gel process, followed by calcination at 700-1000 °C. The calcined BZO powders were investigated using X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. Thereafter, MTA-like cements with the addition of calcined BZO powder were evaluated to determine the optimal composition based on radiopacity, diametral tensile strength (DTS), and setting times. The experimental results showed that calcined BZO exhibited a majority BZO phase with minor zirconia crystals. The crystallinity, the percentage, and the average crystalline size of BZO increased with the increasing calcination temperature. The optimal MTA-like cement was obtained by adding 20% of the 700 °C-calcined BZO powder. The initial and final setting times were 25 and 32 min, respectively. They were significantly shorter than those (70 and 56 min, respectively) prepared with commercial BZO powder. It exhibited a radiopacity of 3.60 ± 0.22 mmAl and a DTS of 3.02 ± 0.18 MPa. After 28 days of simulated oral environment storage, the radiopacity and DTS decreased to 3.36 ± 0.53 mmAl and 2.84 ± 0.27 MPa, respectively. This suggests that 700 °C-calcined BZO powder has potential as a novel radiopacifier for MTAs.

Scrutinizing transport phenomena and recombination mechanisms in thin film Sb2S3 solar cells

The Schockley-Quisser (SQ) limit of 28.64% is distant from the Sb2S3 solar cells' record power conversion efficiency (PCE), which is 8.00%. Such poor efficiency is mostly owing to substantial interface-induced recombination losses caused by defects at the interfaces and misaligned energy levels. The endeavor of this study is to investigate an efficient Sb2S3 solar cell structure via accurate analytical modeling. The proposed model considers different recombination mechanisms such as non-radiative recombination, Sb2S3/CdS interface recombination, Auger, SRH, tunneling-enhanced recombination, and their combined impact on solar cell performance. This model is verified against experimental work (Glass/ITO/CdS/Sb2S3/Au) where a good coincidence is achieved. Several parameters effects such as thickness, doping, electronic affinity, and bandgap are scrutinized. The effect of both bulk traps located in CdS and Sb2S3 on the electrical outputs of the solar cell is analyzed thoroughly. Besides, a deep insight into the effect of interfacial traps on solar cell figures of merits is gained through shedding light into their relation with carriers' minority lifetime, diffusion length, and surface recombination velocity. Our research findings illuminate that the primary contributors to Sb2S3 degradation are interfacial traps and series resistance. Furthermore, achieving optimal band alignment by fine-tuning the electron affinity of CdS to create a Spike-like conformation is crucial for enhancing the immunity of the device versus the interfacial traps. In our study, the optimized solar cell configuration (Glass/ITO/CdS/Sb2S3/Au) demonstrates remarkable performance, including a high short-circuit current (JSC) of 47.9 mA/cm2, an open-circuit voltage (VOC) of 1.16 V, a fill factor (FF) of 54%, and a notable improvement in conversion efficiency by approximately 30% compared to conventional solar cells. Beyond its superior performance, the optimized Sb2S3 solar cell also exhibits enhanced reliability in mitigating interfacial traps at the CdS/Sb2S3 junction. This improved reliability can be attributed to our precise control of band alignment and the fine-tuning of influencing parameters.

Features of Electrochemical Hydrogen Pump Based on Irradiated Proton Exchange Membrane

An electrochemical hydrogen pump (EHP) with a proton exchange membrane (PEM) used as part of fusion cycle systems successfully combines the processes of hydrogen extraction, purification and compression in a single device. This work comprises a novel study of the effect of ionizing radiation on the properties of the PEM as part of the EHP. Radiation exposure leads to nonspecific degradation of membranes, changes in their structure, and destruction of side and matrix chains. The findings from this work reveal that the replacement of sulfate groups in the membrane structure with carboxyl and hydrophilic groups leads to a decrease in conductivity from 0.115 to 0.103 S cm-1, which is reflected in halving the device performance at a temperature of 30 °C. The shift of the ionomer peak of small-angle X-ray scattering curves from 3.1 to 4.4 nm and the absence of changes in the water uptake suggested structural changes in the PEM after the irradiation. Increasing the EHP operating temperature minimized the effect of membrane irradiation on the pump performance, but enhanced membrane drying at low pressure and 50 °C, which caused a current density drop from 0.52 to 0.32 A·cm-2 at 0.5 V.

Effect of Lu-Doping on Electrical Properties of Strontium Zirconate

SrZrO₃-based perovskites are promising proton-conducting membranes for use in fuel and electrolysis cells, sensors, hydrogen separators, etc., because they combine good proton conductivity with excellent chemical stability. In the present research, the effect of Lu-doping on microstructure, phase composition, and electrical conductivity of SrZr_1-xLuxO_3-δ (x = 0-0.10) was investigated via X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and impedance spectroscopy. Dense ceramic samples were obtained by the solution combustion synthesis and possessed an orthorhombic perovskite-type structure. The solubility limit of Lu was revealed to lie between x = 0.03 and 0.05. The conductivity of SrZr_1-xLu_xO_3-δ increases strongly with the addition of Lu at x < 0.05 and just slightly changes at x > 0.05. The rise of the water vapor partial pressure results in an increase in the conductivity of SrZr_1-xLuxO_3-δ ceramics, which confirms their hydration ability and significant contribution of protonic defects to the charge transfer. The highest conductivity was achieved at x = 0.10 (10 mS cm^-1 at 700 °C, wet air, pH₂O = 0.61 kPa). The conductivity behavior was discussed in terms of the defect formation model, taking into account the improvement in ceramic sintering at high lutetium concentrations.

Elimination of grain boundary resistance in vanadoborate electrolyte via the hydrogen-bond interaction of glycerol

An effective method to eliminate grain boundary resistance of crystalline vanadoborate electrolyte was developed. This method involved the addition of glycerol to result in the formation of many hydrogen bonds between crystal grains, facilitating a rapid transfer of protons across grain boundaries. Using this method, the intrinsic conduction of vanadoborate electrolyte was fully reflected in its bulk materials, valuable for advancing our understanding of vanadoborate electrolytes and for promoting the application of these electrolytes.

Linkage-Affected Donor–Acceptor Covalent Organic Frameworks for Photocatalytic Hydrogen Production

The depletion of traditional fossil energy and the resulting environmental pollution forces people to explore new energy sources. Direct use of solar energy is now a viable solution for solving these problems. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are a porous crystalline material; their well-defined two-dimensional or three-dimensional frameworks can ensure the orderly arrangement of photoelectric active units, giving them potential photoelectric conversion applications. The tunable structural features endow COFs many advantages in photocatalytic hydrogen production under visible light. This review comprehensively summarizes the research progress on photoelectronic donor–acceptor (D-A) COFs with tunable structure for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution and will provide a feasible guiding strategy for applying this type of COFs in photocatalytic hydrogen production.

Combined DFT, SCAPS-1D, and wxAMPS frameworks for design optimization of efficient Cs2BiAgI6-based perovskite solar cells with different charge transport layers

In this study, combined DFT, SCAPS-1D, and wxAMPS frameworks are used to investigate the optimized designs of Cs2BiAgI6 double perovskite-based solar cells. First-principles calculations are employed to investigate the structural stability, optical responses, and electronic contribution of the constituent elements in Cs2BiAgI6 absorber material, where SCAPS-1D and wxAMPS simulators are used to scrutinize different configurations of Cs2BiAgI6 solar cells. Here, PCBM, ZnO, TiO2, C60, IGZO, SnO2, WS2, and CeO2 are used as ETL, and Cu2O, CuSCN, CuSbS2, NiO, P3HT, PEDOT:PSS, spiro-MeOTAD, CuI, CuO, V2O5, CBTS, CFTS are used as HTL, and Au is used as a back contact. About ninety-six combinations of Cs2BiAgI6-based solar cell structures are investigated, in which eight sets of solar cell structures are identified as the most efficient structures. Besides, holistic investigation on the effect of different factors such as the thickness of different layers, series and shunt resistances, temperature, capacitance, Mott-Schottky and generation-recombination rates, and J-V (current-voltage density) and QE (quantum efficiency) characteristics is performed. The results show CBTS as the best HTL for Cs2BiAgI6 with all eight ETLs used in this work, resulting in a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 19.99%, 21.55%, 21.59%, 17.47%, 20.42%, 21.52%, 14.44%, 21.43% with PCBM, TiO2, ZnO, C60, IGZO, SnO2, CeO2, WS2, respectively. The proposed strategy may pave the way for further design optimization of lead-free double perovskite solar cells.

Effect of Various Electron and Hole Transport Layers on the Performance of CsPbI3-Based Perovskite Solar Cells: A Numerical Investigation in DFT, SCAPS-1D, and wxAMPS Frameworks

CsPbI₃ has recently received tremendous attention as a possible absorber of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, CsPbI₃-based PSCs have yet to achieve the high performance of the hybrid PSCs. In this work, we performed a density functional theory (DFT) study using the Cambridge Serial Total Energy Package (CASTEP) code for the cubic CsPbI₃ absorber to compare and evaluate its structural, electronic, and optical properties. The calculated electronic band gap (E _g) using the GGA-PBE approach of CASTEP was 1.483 eV for this CsPbI₃ absorber. Moreover, the computed density of states (DOS) exhibited the dominant contribution from the Pb-5d orbital, and most charges also accumulated for the Pb atom as seen from the electronic charge density map. Fermi surface calculation showed multiband character, and optical properties were computed to investigate the optical response of CsPbI₃. Furthermore, we used IGZO, SnO₂, WS₂, CeO₂, PCBM, TiO₂, ZnO, and C₆₀ as the electron transport layers (ETLs) and Cu₂O, CuSCN, CuSbS₂, Spiro-MeOTAD, V₂O₅, CBTS, CFTS, P3HT, PEDOT:PSS, NiO, CuO, and CuI as the hole transport layers (HTLs) to identify the best HTL/CsPbI₃/ETL combinations using the SCAPS-1D solar cell simulation software. Among 96 device structures, the best-optimized device structure, ITO/TiO₂/CsPbI₃/CBTS/Au, was identified, which exhibited an efficiency of 17.9%. The effect of the absorber and ETL thickness, series resistance, shunt resistance, and operating temperature was also evaluated for the six best devices along with their corresponding generation rate, recombination rate, capacitance-voltage, current density-voltage, and quantum efficiency characteristics. The obtained results from SCAPS-1D were also compared with wxAMPS simulation results.
