Exploring Nanoscale Perovskite Materials for Next-Generation Photodetectors: A Comprehensive Review and Future Directions

The rapid advancement of nanotechnology has sparked much interest in applying nanoscale perovskite materials for photodetection applications. These materials are promising candidates for next-generation photodetectors (PDs) due to their unique optoelectronic properties and flexible synthesis routes. This review explores the approaches used in the development and use of optoelectronic devices made of different nanoscale perovskite architectures, including quantum dots, nanosheets, nanorods, nanowires, and nanocrystals. Through a thorough analysis of recent literature, the review also addresses common issues like the mechanisms underlying the degradation of perovskite PDs and offers perspectives on potential solutions to improve stability and scalability that impede widespread implementation. In addition, it highlights that photodetection encompasses the detection of light fields in dimensions other than light intensity and suggests potential avenues for future research to overcome these obstacles and fully realize the potential of nanoscale perovskite materials in state-of-the-art photodetection systems. This review provides a comprehensive overview of nanoscale perovskite PDs and guides future research efforts towards improved performance and wider applicability, making it a valuable resource for researchers.

Graphene photodetectors integrated with silicon and perovskite quantum dots

Photodetectors (PDs) play a crucial role in imaging, sensing, communication systems, etc. Graphene (Gr), a leading two-dimensional material, has demonstrated significant potential for photodetection in recent years. However, its relatively weak interaction with light poses challenges for practical applications. The integration of silicon (Si) and perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) has opened new avenues for Gr in the realm of next-generation optoelectronics. This review provides a comprehensive investigation of Gr/Si Schottky junction PDs and Gr/PQD hybrid PDs as well as their heterostructures. The operating principles, design, fabrication, optimization strategies, and typical applications of these devices are studied and summarized. Through these discussions, we aim to illuminate the current challenges and offer insights into future directions in this rapidly evolving field.

Bicolour, large area, inkjet-printed metal halide perovskite light emitting diodes

We demonstrate a bicoloured metal halide perovskite (MHP) light emitting diode (LED) fabricated in two sequential inkjet printing steps. By adjusting the printing parameters, we selectively and deliberately redissolve and recrystallize the first printed emissive layer to add a pattern emitting in a different color. The red light emitting features (on a green light emitting background) have a minimum size of 100 μm and originate from iodide-rich domains in a phase-segregated, mixed MHP. This phase forms between the first layer, a bromide-based MHP, which is partially dissolved by printing, and the second layer, an iodide-containing MHP. With an optimised printing process we can retain the active layer integrity and fabricate bicolour, large area MHP-based LEDs with up to 1600 mm2 active area. The two emission peaks at 535 nm and 710 nm are well separated and produce a strong visual contrast.

Sensing Utilities of Cesium Lead Halide Perovskites and Composites: A Comprehensive Review

Recently, the utilization of metal halide perovskites in sensing and their application in environmental studies have reached a new height. Among the different metal halide perovskites, cesium lead halide perovskites (CsPbX3; X = Cl, Br, and I) and composites have attracted great interest in sensing applications owing to their exceptional optoelectronic properties. Most CsPbX3 nanostructures and composites possess great structural stability, luminescence, and electrical properties for developing distinct optical and photonic devices. When exposed to light, heat, and water, CsPbX3 and composites can display stable sensing utilities. Many CsPbX3 and composites have been reported as probes in the detection of diverse analytes, such as metal ions, anions, important chemical species, humidity, temperature, radiation photodetection, and so forth. So far, the sensing studies of metal halide perovskites covering all metallic and organic-inorganic perovskites have already been reviewed in many studies. Nevertheless, a detailed review of the sensing utilities of CsPbX3 and composites could be helpful for researchers who are looking for innovative designs using these nanomaterials. Herein, we deliver a thorough review of the sensing utilities of CsPbX3 and composites, in the quantitation of metal ions, anions, chemicals, explosives, bioanalytes, pesticides, fungicides, cellular imaging, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), toxic gases, humidity, temperature, radiation, and photodetection. Furthermore, this review also covers the synthetic pathways, design requirements, advantages, limitations, and future directions for this material.

3D Printed Lattice Template by Material Extrusion Technique for Fabrication of Pixelated Photodetector

Rigid and flexible, pixelated ultraviolet photodetectors (PD) based on ZnO have been fabricated by material extrusion 3D printing technique. The photoresponse is studied in an out-of-plane configuration. An open lattice structure is printed using PLA over ITO/Glass substrate for rigid, and TPU over ITO/PET substrate for flexible PDs. ZnO slurry is filled selectively into the columnar matrix by the microdispensing technique. The optical detector printed on ITO/Glass substrate shows a sensitivity of 25 and responsivity of 1.55 nA/mW with a rise and decay time of 1.6 and 0.6 s, respectively. Similarly, the flexible PD printed using TPU lattice shows a sensitivity of 9.5 and responsivity of 0.38 nA/mW with a rise and decay time of 1.8 and 0.6 s, respectively. The charge transport mechanism is studied using band diagram analysis. 3D printed open lattice structure is found to be a potential template for sensor fabrication. This work demonstrates the capability of material extrusion 3D printing with an open lattice structure for the fabrication of high-resolution pixelated PDs.

Organic Electronics-Microfluidics/Lab on a Chip Integration in Analytical Applications

Organic electronics (OE) technology has matured in displays and is advancing in solid-state lighting applications. Other promising and growing uses of this technology are in (bio)chemical sensing, imaging, in vitro cell monitoring, and other biomedical diagnostics that can benefit from low-cost, efficient small devices, including wearable designs that can be fabricated on glass or flexible plastic. OE devices such as organic LEDs, organic and hybrid perovskite-based photodetectors, and organic thin-film transistors, notably organic electrochemical transistors, are utilized in such sensing and (bio)medical applications. The integration of compact and sensitive OE devices with microfluidic channels and lab-on-a-chip (LOC) structures is very promising. This survey focuses on studies that utilize this integration for a variety of OE tools. It is not intended to encompass all studies in the area, but to present examples of the advances and the potential of such OE technology, with a focus on microfluidics/LOC integration for efficient wide-ranging sensing and biomedical applications.

Excitonic Enhancement and Excited Excitonic States in CsPbBr3 Halide Perovskite Single Crystals

Halide perovskites are novel photonics materials promising numerous applications in fields such as photovoltaics, LED light sources, microlasers, and radiation detectors. Many halide perovskites are direct-gap semiconductors, and Wannier-Mott excitons play a significant role in their optical properties near the fundamental absorption edge. The high oscillator strength of these states favors applications where efficient interaction with light is required. In this work, to study excitonic states in CsPbBr3 halide perovskite single crystals, the reflection spectroscopy at temperatures from 4 K was used. A reflection coefficient up to 70% was observed for the n=1 exciton state, followed by weak excited states of excitons with n=2 and n=3. It should be noted that the Sommerfeld enhancement factor should be considered for a correct description of the behavior of the dielectric constant, taking into account excitonic effects.
