Thermoelectric and Transport Properties of Delafossite CuCrO₂:Mg Thin Films Prepared by RF Magnetron Sputtering

Fabrication of CuYO2 Nanofibers by Electrospinning and Applied to Hydrogen Harvest

Hydrogen can be employed as an alternative renewable energy source in response to climate change, global warming, and the energy problem. Methanol gas steam reforming (SRM) is the major method used in industry to produce hydrogen. In the SRM process, the catalyst nature offers benefits such as low cost, simplicity, and quickness. In this work, delafossite copper yttrium oxide (CuYO2) nanofibers were successfully prepared by electrospinning. The prepared CuYO2 nanofibers have different physical and chemical properties including thermoelectric behavior. The electrospinning method was used to produce as-spun fibers and annealed in an air atmosphere to form Cu2Y2O5 fibers; then, Cu2Y2O5 fibers were annealed in a nitrogen atmosphere to form CuYO2 nanofibers. X-ray diffraction studies and thermogravimetric and transmission electron microscope analysis confirmed the formation of CuYO2 nanofibers. The CuYO2 nanofibers were applied to methanol steam reforming for hydrogen production to confirm their catalytic ability. The CuYO2 nanofibers exhibited high catalytic activity and the best hydrogen production rate of 1967.89 mL min-1 g-cat-1 at 500 °C. The highly specific surface area of CuYO2 nanofibers used in steam reforming reactions could have significant economic and industrial implications. The performance of these CuYO2 nanofibers in hydrogen generation could be very important in industries with a global economic impact. Furthermore, the H2 production performance increases at higher reaction temperatures.

Nanobiosensors for the Detection of Novel Coronavirus 2019-nCoV and Other Pandemic/Epidemic Respiratory Viruses: A Review

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic is considered a public health emergency of international concern. The 2019 novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) or severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) that caused this pandemic has spread rapidly to over 200 countries, and has drastically affected public health and the economies of states at unprecedented levels. In this context, efforts around the world are focusing on solving this problem in several directions of research, by: (i) exploring the origin and evolution of the phylogeny of the SARS-CoV-2 viral genome; (ii) developing nanobiosensors that could be highly effective in detecting the new coronavirus; (iii) finding effective treatments for COVID-19; and (iv) working on vaccine development. In this paper, an overview of the progress made in the development of nanobiosensors for the detection of human coronaviruses (SARS-CoV, SARS-CoV-2, and Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) is presented, along with specific techniques for modifying the surface of nanobiosensors. The newest detection methods of the influenza virus responsible for acute respiratory syndrome were compared with conventional methods, highlighting the newest trends in diagnostics, applications, and challenges of SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19 causative virus) nanobiosensors.

Interfacial stabilization for epitaxial CuCrO2 delafossites

ABO₂ delafossites are fascinating materials that exhibit a wide range of physical properties, including giant Rashba spin splitting and anomalous Hall effects, because of their characteristic layered structures composed of noble metal A and strongly correlated BO₂ sublayers. However, thin film synthesis is known to be extremely challenging owing to their low symmetry rhombohedral structures, which limit the selection of substrates for thin film epitaxy. Hexagonal lattices, such as those provided by Al₂O₃(0001) and (111) oriented cubic perovskites, are promising candidates for epitaxy of delafossites. However, the formation of twin domains and impurity phases is hard to suppress, and the nucleation and growth mechanisms thereon have not been studied for the growth of epitaxial delafossites. In this study, we report the epitaxial stabilization of a new interfacial phase formed during pulsed-laser epitaxy of (0001)-oriented CuCrO₂ epitaxial thin films on Al₂O₃ substrates. Through a combined study using scanning transmission electron microscopy/electron-energy loss spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations, we report that the nucleation of a thermodynamically stable, atomically thick CuCr_1-xAl_xO₂ interfacial layer is the critical element for the epitaxy of CuCrO₂ delafossites on Al₂O₃ substrates. This finding provides key insights into the thermodynamic mechanism for the nucleation of intermixing-induced buffer layers that can be used for the growth of other noble-metal-based delafossites, which are known to be challenging due to the difficulty in initial nucleation.

Electrodeposition of Bi-Te Thin Films on Silicon Wafer and Micro-Column Arrays on Microporous Glass Template

Electrodeposition is an important method for preparing bismuth telluride (Bi₂Te₃)-based thermoelectric (TE) thin films and micro-column arrays. When the concentrations of Bi:Te in electrolytes were 3 mM:4 mM, the TE films satisfied the Bi₂Te₃ stoichiometry and had no dependence on deposition potential. With increasing over-potential, crystal grains changed from lamellar structures with uniform growth directions to large clusters with staggered dendrites, causing a decrease in the deposition density. Meanwhile, the preferred (110) orientation was diminished. The TE film deposited at −35 mV had an optimum conductivity of 2003.6 S/cm and a power factor of 2015.64 μW/mK² at room temperature due to the (110)-preferred orientation. The electrodeposition of TE micro-columns in the template was recently used to fabricate high-power micro-thermoelectric generators (micro-TEG). Here, microporous glass templates were excellent templates for micro-TEG fabrication because of their low thermal conductivity, high insulation, and easy processing. A three-step pulsed-voltage deposition method was used for the fabrication of micro-columns with large aspect ratios, high filling rates, and high density. The resistance of a single TE micro-column with a 60 μm diameter and a 200 μm height was 6.22 Ω. This work laid the foundation for micro-TEG fabrication and improved performance.

LiCrO2 Under Pressure: In-Situ Structural and Vibrational Studies

The high-pressure behaviour of LiCrO2, a compound isostructural to the battery compound LiCoO2, has been investigated by synchrotron-based angle-dispersive X-ray powder diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and resistance measurements up to 41, 30, and 10 Gpa, respectively. The stability of the layered structured compound on a triangular lattice with R-3m space group is confirmed in all three measurements up to the highest pressure reached. The dependence of lattice parameters and unit-cell volume with pressure has been determined from the structural refinements of X-ray diffraction patterns that are used to extract the axial compressibilities and bulk modulus by means of Birch–Murnaghan equation-of-state fits. The pressure coefficients for the two Raman-active modes, A1g and Eg, and their mode-Grüneisen parameters are reported. The electrical resistance measurements indicate that pressure has little influence in the resistivity up to 10 GPa. The obtained results for the vibrational and structural properties of LiCrO2 under pressure are in line with the published results of the similar studies on the related compounds. Research work reported in this article contributes significantly to enhance the understanding on the structural and mechanical properties of LiCrO2 and related lithium compounds.

Tuning the electrical properties of the p-type transparent conducting oxide Cu1-xCr1+xO2 by controlled annealing

Off-stoichiometric copper chromium oxide delafossite received lately a great interest due to its high p-type electrical conductivity and adequate optical transmittance in the visible range. However, for a suitable integration in active devices such as p-n junctions, transistors or optoelectronic devices, the electronic properties must be efficiently tailored. Here, post-deposition thermal treatment is proven as an adequate approach for finely controlling the electrical properties of this former degenerate semiconducting material. The energetics of the annealing process are investigated using two different approaches, as a function of the annealing temperature and as a function of the annealing time, allowing the accurate determination of the activation energy of the annealing of defects. By using this method, the electrical carrier concentration was varied in the 10²¹ – 10¹⁷ cm⁻³ range while the recorded changes in the drift mobility covered three orders of magnitude. Moreover, we demonstrate the ability to accurately manipulate the Fermi level of such materials, which is of great importance in controlling the carrier injection and extraction in optoelectronic active layers.
