Carrageenan-based sustainable biomaterials for intelligent food packaging: A review

This article explores the use of carrageenan-based biomaterials in developing sustainable and efficient intelligent food packaging solutions. The research in this field has seen a notable surge, evident from >1000 entries in databases such as Web of Science, PubMed and Science Direct between 2018 and 2023. Various film preparation techniques are explored, including solvent casting, layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly, and electrospinning. Solvent casting is commonly used to incorporate active compounds, while LbL assembly and electrospinning are favored for enhancing mechanical properties and solubility. Carrageenan's film-forming characteristics enable the production of transparent films, ideal for indicator films that facilitate visual inspection for color changes indicative of pH variations, crucial for detecting food spoilage. Surface properties can be modified using additives like plant extracts to regulate moisture interaction, affecting shelf life and food safety. These materials' antioxidant and antimicrobial attributes are highlighted, demonstrating their efficacy against pathogens such as E. coli.

Application and Development of Electrospun Nanofiber Scaffolds for Bone Tissue Engineering

Nanofiber scaffolds have gained significant attention in the field of bone tissue engineering. Electrospinning, a straightforward and efficient technique for producing nanofibers, has been extensively researched. When used in bone tissue engineering scaffolds, electrospun nanofibers with suitable surface properties promote new bone tissue growth and enhance cell adhesion. Recent advancements in electrospinning technology have provided innovative approaches for scaffold fabrication in bone tissue engineering. This review comprehensively examines the utilization of electrospun nanofibers in bone tissue engineering scaffolds and evaluates the relevant literature. The review begins by presenting the fundamental principles and methodologies of electrospinning. It then discusses various materials used in the production of electrospun nanofiber scaffolds for bone tissue engineering, including natural and synthetic polymers, as well as certain inorganic materials. The challenges associated with these materials are also described. The review focuses on novel electrospinning techniques for scaffold construction in bone tissue engineering, such as multilayer nanofibers, multifluid electrospinning, and the integration of electrospinning with other methods. Recent advancements in electrospinning technology have enabled the fabrication of precisely aligned nanofiber scaffolds with nanoscale architectures. These innovative methods also facilitate the fabrication of biomimetic structures, wherein bioactive substances can be incorporated and released in a controlled manner for drug delivery purposes. Moreover, they address issues encountered with traditional electrospun nanofibers, such as mechanical characteristics and biocompatibility. Consequently, the development and implementation of novel electrospinning technologies have revolutionized scaffold fabrication for bone tissue engineering.

Designing State-of-the-Art Gas Sensors: From Fundamentals to Applications

Gas sensors are crucial in environmental monitoring, industrial safety, and medical diagnostics. Due to the rising demand for precise and reliable gas detection, there is a rising demand for cutting-edge gas sensors that possess exceptional sensitivity, selectivity, and stability. Due to their tunable electrical properties, high-density surface-active sites, and significant surface-to-volume ratio, nanomaterials have been extensively investigated in this regard. The traditional gas sensors utilize homogeneous material for sensing where the adsorbed surface oxygen species play a vital role in their sensing activity. However, their performance for selective gas sensing is still unsatisfactory because the employed high temperature leads to the poor stability. The heterostructures nanomaterials can easily tune sensing performance and their different energy band structures, work functions, charge carrier concentration and polarity, and interfacial band alignments can be precisely designed for high-performance selective gas sensing at low temperature. In this review article, we discuss in detail the fundamentals of semiconductor gas sensing along with their mechanisms. Further, we highlight the existed challenges in semiconductor gas sensing. In addition, we review the recent advancements in semiconductor gas sensor design for applications from different perspective. Finally, the conclusion and future perspectives for improvement of the gas sensing performance are discussed.

Carbon Nanostructure Embedded Novel Sensor Implementation for Detection of Aromatic Volatile Organic Compounds: An Organized Review

For field-like environmental gas monitoring and noninvasive illness diagnostics, effective sensing materials with exceptional sensing capabilities of sensitive, quick detection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are required. Carbon-based nanomaterials (CNMs), like CNTs, graphene, carbon dots (Cdots), and others, have recently drawn a lot of interest for their future application as an elevated-performance sensor for the detection of VOCs. CNMs have a greater potential for developing selective sensors that target VOCs due to their tunable chemical and surface properties. Additionally, the mechanical versatility of CNMs enables the development of novel gas sensors and places them ahead of other sensing materials for wearable applications. An overview of the latest advancements in the study of CNM-based sensors is given in this comprehensive organized review.

Recent Advances in Silver Nanoparticles Containing Nanofibers for Chronic Wound Management

Infections are the primary cause of death from burns and diabetic wounds. The clinical difficulty of treating wound infections with conventional antibiotics has progressively increased and reached a critical level, necessitating a paradigm change for enhanced chronic wound care. The most prevalent bacterium linked with these infections is Staphylococcus aureus, and the advent of community-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus has posed a substantial therapeutic challenge. Most existing wound dressings are ineffective and suffer from constraints such as insufficient antibacterial activity, toxicity, failure to supply enough moisture to the wound, and poor mechanical performance. Using ineffective wound dressings might prolong the healing process of a wound. To meet this requirement, nanoscale scaffolds with their desirable qualities, which include the potential to distribute bioactive agents, a large surface area, enhanced mechanical capabilities, the ability to imitate the extracellular matrix (ECM), and high porosity, have attracted considerable interest. The incorporation of nanoparticles into nanofiber scaffolds constitutes a novel approach to “nanoparticle dressing” that has acquired significant popularity for wound healing. Due to their remarkable antibacterial capabilities, silver nanoparticles are attractive materials for wound healing. This review focuses on the therapeutic applications of nanofiber wound dressings containing Ag-NPs and their potential to revolutionize wound healing.

Surface Reconstruction on Electro-Spun PVA/PVP Nanofibers by Water Evaporation

Tailoring the secondary surface morphology of electro-spun nanofibers has been highly desired, as such delicate structures equip nanofibers with distinct functions. Here, we report a simple strategy to directly reconstruct the surface of polyvinyl alcohol/polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVA/PVP) nanofibers by water evaporation. The roughness and diameter of the nanofibers depend on the temperature during vacuum drying. Surface changes of the nanofibers from smooth to rough were observed at 55 °C, with a significant drop in nanofiber diameter. We attribute the formation of the secondary surface morphology to the intermolecular forces in the water vapor, including capillary and the compression forces, on the basis of the results from the Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron (XPS) spectroscopy. The strategy is universally effective for various electro-spun polymer nanofibers, thus opening up avenues toward more detailed and sophisticated structure design and implementation for nanofibers.

Enhanced Li-Ion Rate Capability and Stable Efficiency Enabled by MoSe2 Nanosheets in Polymer-Derived Silicon Oxycarbide Fiber Electrodes

Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) such as MoSe₂ have continued to generate interest in the engineering community because of their unique layered morphology—the strong in-plane chemical bonding between transition metal atoms sandwiched between two chalcogen atoms and the weak physical attraction between adjacent TMD layers provides them with not only chemical versatility but also a range of electronic, optical, and chemical properties that can be unlocked upon exfoliation into individual TMD layers. Such a layered morphology is particularly suitable for ion intercalation as well as for conversion chemistry with alkali metal ions for electrochemical energy storage applications. Nonetheless, host of issues including fast capacity decay arising due to volume changes and from TMD’s degradation reaction with electrolyte at low discharge potentials have restricted use in commercial batteries. One approach to overcome barriers associated with TMDs’ chemical stability functionalization of TMD surfaces by chemically robust precursor-derived ceramics or PDC materials, such as silicon oxycarbide (SiOC). SiOC-functionalized TMDs have shown to curb capacity degradation in TMD and improve long term cycling as Li-ion battery (LIBs) electrodes. Herein, we report synthesis of such a composite in which MoSe₂ nanosheets are in SiOC matrix in a self-standing fiber mat configuration. This was achieved via electrospinning of TMD nanosheets suspended in pre-ceramic polymer followed by high temperature pyrolysis. Morphology and chemical composition of synthesized material was established by use of electron microscopy and spectroscopic technique. When tested as LIB electrode, the SiOC/MoSe₂ fiber mats showed improved cycling stability over neat MoSe₂ and neat SiOC electrodes. The freestanding composite electrode delivered a high charge capacity of 586 mAh g⁻¹_electrode with an initial coulombic efficiency of 58%. The composite electrode also showed good cycling stability over SiOC fiber mat electrode for over 100 cycles.

Tunable Spun Fiber Constructs in Biomedicine: Influence of Processing Parameters in the Fibers' Architecture

Electrospinning and wet-spinning have been recognized as two of the most efficient and promising techniques for producing polymeric fibrous constructs for a wide range of applications, including optics, electronics, food industry and biomedical applications. They have gained considerable attention in the past few decades because of their unique features and tunable architectures that can mimic desirable biological features, responding more effectively to local demands. In this review, various fiber architectures and configurations, varying from monolayer and core-shell fibers to tri-axial, porous, multilayer, side-by-side and helical fibers, are discussed, highlighting the influence of processing parameters in the final constructs. Additionally, the envisaged biomedical purposes for the examined fiber architectures, mainly focused on drug delivery and tissue engineering applications, are explored at great length.

Flexible Ceramic Fibers: Recent Development in Preparation and Application

Flexible ceramic fibers (FCFs) have been developed for various advanced applications due to their superior mechanical flexibility, high temperature resistance, and excellent chemical stability. In this article, we present an overview on the recent progress of FCFs in terms of materials, fabrication methods, and applications. We begin with a brief introduction to FCFs and the materials for preparation of FCFs. After that, various methods for preparation of FCFs are discussed, including centrifugal spinning, electrospinning, solution blow spinning, self-assembly, chemical vapor deposition, atomic layer deposition, and polymer conversion. Recent applications of FCFs in various fields are further illustrated in detail, including thermal insulation, air filtration, water treatment, sound absorption, electromagnetic wave absorption, battery separator, catalytic application, among others. Finally, some perspectives on the future directions and opportunities for the preparation and application of FCFs are highlighted. We envision that this review will provide readers with some meaningful guidance on the preparation of FCFs and inspire them to explore more potential applications.

Flexible Stannum-Doped SrTiO3 Nanofiber Membranes for Highly Sensitive and Reliable Piezoresistive Pressure Sensors

Mechanically flexible ceramic fiber-based electronic skins are attractive materials ascribed to the features of monitoring signals of various physical parameters in a harsh environment, but the inherent brittleness of the ceramic fibers has limited their wide applications in emerging fields, such as fire-protecting clothing. Herein, a strategy to fabricate the flexible stannum(IV)-doped SrTiO3 (SSTO) nanofiber membranes by a facile sol-gel electrospinning method is reported. The calcination temperature and Sn4+ doping content play vital roles in regulating the crystalline and pore structures that are closely relevant to the flexibility and mechanical properties of the resultant SSTO nanofiber membranes. The as-prepared SSTO nanofiber membranes exhibited exceptional flexibility with an optimum tensile strength of 0.22 MPa, an elongation rate of 1.8%, and a Young's modulus of 13.3 MPa. Significantly, the flexible SSTO nanofiber-based piezoresistive sensors exhibited intriguing sensing performance toward pressure involving high sensitivity (2.24 kPa-1) in a low-pressure range (<400 Pa), fast response time (12 ms) and recovery time (32 ms), good durability (>1000 cycles), and excellent stability at different humidity levels and elevated temperatures. Furthermore, the sensor can also accurately monitor the signals of human motion such as finger bending, throat swallowing, and radial pulse. The fabrication of flexible ceramic nanofiber-based piezoresistive sensors would pave the way to fabricate wearable devices for fire-protecting clothing, personal healthcare, real-time human activity detection.

Electrohydrodynamic processing of natural polymers for active food packaging: A comprehensive review

The active packaging materials fabricated using natural polymers is increasing in recent years. Electrohydrodynamic processing has drawn attention in active food packaging due to its potential in fabricating materials with advanced structural and functional properties. These materials have the significant capability in enhancing food's quality, safety, and shelf-life. Through electrospinning and electrospray, fibers and particles are encapsulated with bioactive compounds for active packaging applications. Understanding the principle behind electrohydrodynamics provides fundamentals in modulating the material's physicochemical properties based on the operating parameters. This review provides a deep understanding of electrospray and electrospinning, along with their advantages and recent innovations, from food packaging perspectives. The natural polymers suitable for developing active packaging films and coatings through electrohydrodynamics are intensely focused. The critical properties of the packaging system are discussed with characterization techniques. Furthermore, the limitations and prospects for natural polymers and electrohydrodynamic processing in active packaging are summarized.

Development and characterization of electrospun nanofibers based on pullulan/chitin nanofibers containing curcumin and anthocyanins for active-intelligent food packaging

An electrospun nanofiber based on pullulan/chitin nanofibers (PCN) containing curcumin (CR) and anthocyanins (ATH) was developed using an electrospinning technique for active-intelligent food packaging. The results of scanning electron microscopy and attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy indicated that CR and ATH were successfully immobilized on the film-forming substrate based on PCN. The physical and chemical properties of nanofibers with no colorant, a single colorant, and double colorants were compared. The nanofiber containing ATH and CR (PCN/CR/ATH) had stronger antioxidant and antimicrobial activities than those of nanofibers containing CR (PCN/CR) or ATH (PCN/ATH). With respect to pH sensitivity, the color of the PCN/CR nanofibers did not change obviously, but the color of the PCN/ATH and PCN/CR/ATH nanofibers changed significantly with the change in pH. Furthermore, the PCN/CR/ATH nanofibers clearly changed color with the progressive spoilage of Plectorhynchus cinctus at room temperature. Therefore, the electrospun PCN/CR/ATH nanofiber have great application potential in active-intelligent food packaging.

Conformal Fabrication of an Electrospun Nanofiber Mat on a 3D Ear Cartilage-Shaped Hydrogel Collector Based on Hydrogel-Assisted Electrospinning

Electrospinning is a common and versatile process to produce nanofibers and deposit them on a collector as a two-dimensional nanofiber mat or a three-dimensional (3D) macroscopic arrangement. However, 3D electroconductive collectors with complex geometries, including protruded, curved, and recessed regions, generally caused hampering of a conformal deposition and incomplete covering of electrospun nanofibers. In this study, we suggested a conformal fabrication of an electrospun nanofiber mat on a 3D ear cartilage-shaped hydrogel collector based on hydrogel-assisted electrospinning. To relieve the influence of the complex geometries, we flattened the protruded parts of the 3D ear cartilage-shaped hydrogel collector by exploiting the flexibility of the hydrogel. We found that the suggested fabrication technique could significantly decrease an unevenly focused electric field, caused by the complex geometries of the 3D collector, by alleviating the standard deviation by more than 70% through numerical simulation. Furthermore, it was experimentally confirmed that an electrospun nanofiber mat conformally covered the flattened hydrogel collector with a uniform thickness, which was not achieved with the original hydrogel collector. Given that this study established the conformal electrospinning technique on 3D electroconductive collectors, it will contribute to various studies related to electrospinning, including tissue engineering, drug/cell delivery, environmental filter, and clothing.

Self-supporting carbon-rich SiOC ceramic electrodes for lithium-ion batteries and aqueous supercapacitors

Fabrication of precursor-derived ceramic fibers as electrodes for energy storage applications remains largely unexplored. Within this work, three little known polymer-derived ceramic (PDC)-based fibers are being studied systemically as potential high-capacity electrode materials for electrochemical energy devices. We report fabrication of precursor-derived SiOC fibermats via one-step spinning from various compositions of siloxane oligomers followed by stabilization and pyrolysis at 800 °C. Electron microscopy, Raman, FTIR, XPS, and NMR spectroscopies reveal transformation from polymer to ceramic stages of the various SiOC ceramic fibers. The ceramic samples are a few microns in diameter with a free carbon phase embedded in the amorphous Si–O–C structure. The free carbon phase improves the electronic conductivity and provides major sites for ion storage, whereas the Si–O–C structure contributes to high efficiency. The self-standing electrodes in lithium-ion battery half-cells deliver a charge capacity of 866 mA h g_electrode⁻¹ with a high initial coulombic efficiency of 72%. As supercapacitor electrode, SiOC fibers maintain 100% capacitance over 5000 cycles at a current density of 3 A g⁻¹.

Highly Catalytic Electrochemical Oxidation of Carbon Monoxide on Iridium Nanotubes: Amperometric Sensing of Carbon Monoxide

The nanotubular structures of IrO₂ and Ir metal were successfully synthesized without any template. First, IrO₂ nanotubes were prepared by electrospinning and post-calcination, where a fine control of synthetic conditions (e.g., precursor concentration and solvent composition in electrospinning solution, temperature increasing rate for calcination) was required. Then, a further thermal treatment of IrO₂ nanotubes under hydrogen gas atmosphere produced Ir metal nanotubes. The electroactivity of the resultant Ir metal nanotubes was investigated toward carbon monoxide (CO) oxidation using linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) and amperometry. The anodic current response of Ir metal nanotubes was linearly proportional to CO concentration change, with a high sensitivity and a short response time. The amperometric sensitivity of Ir metal nanotubes for CO sensing was greater than a nanofibrous counterpart (i.e., Ir metal nanofibers) and commercial Pt (20 wt% Pt loading on carbon). Density functional theory calculations support stronger CO adsorption on Ir(111) than Pt(111). This study demonstrates that metallic Ir in a nanotubular structure is a good electrode material for the amperometric sensing of CO.

An Overview of the Water Remediation Potential of Nanomaterials and Their Ecotoxicological Impacts

Nanomaterials, i.e., those materials which have at least one dimension in the 1–100 nm size range, have produced a new generation of technologies for water purification. This includes nanosized adsorbents, nanomembranes, photocatalysts, etc. On the other hand, their uncontrolled release can potentially endanger biota in various environmental domains such as soil and water systems. In this review, we point out the opportunities created by the use of nanomaterials for water remediation and also the adverse effects of such small potential pollutants on the environment. While there is still a large need to further identify the potential hazards of nanomaterials through extensive lab or even field studies, an overview on the current knowledge about the pros and cons of such systems should be helpful for their better implementation.

Antibacterial biohybrid nanofibers for wound dressings

Globally, chronic wounds impose a notable burden to patients and healthcare systems. Such skin wounds are readily subjected to bacteria that provoke inflammation and hence challenge the healing process. Furthermore, bacteria induce infection impeding re-epithelialization and collagen synthesis. With an estimated global market of $20.4 billion by 2021, appropriate wound dressing materials e.g. those composed of biopolymers originating from nature, are capable of alleviating the infection incidence and of accelerating the healing process. Particularly, biopolymeric nanofibrous dressings are biocompatible and mostly biodegradable and biomimic the extracellular matrix structure. Such nanofibrous dressings provide a high surface area and the ability to deliver antibiotics and antibacterial agents locally into the wound milieu to control infection. In this regard, with the dangerous evolution of antibiotic resistant bacteria, antibiotic delivery systems are being gradually replaced with antibacterial biohybrid nanofibrous wound dressings. This emerging class of wound dressings comprises biopolymeric nanofibers containing antibacterial nanoparticles, nature-derived compounds and biofunctional agents. Here, the most recent (since 2015) developments of antibacterial biopolymeric nanofibrous wound dressings, particularly those made of biohybrids, are reviewed and their antibacterial efficiency is evaluated based on a comprehensive literature analysis. Lastly, the prospects and challenges are discussed to draw a roadmap for further progresses and to open up future research avenues in this area. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: With a global market of $20.4 billion by 2021, skin wound dressings are a crucial segment of the wound care industry. As an advanced class of bioactive wound dressing materials, natural polymeric nanofibers loaded with antibacterial agents, e.g. antimicrobial nanoparticles/ions, nature-derived compounds and biofunctional agents, have shown a remarkable potential for replacement of their classic counterparts. Also, given the expanding concern regarding antibiotic resistant bacteria, such biohybrid nanofibrous wound dressings can outperform classical drug delivery systems. Here, an updated overview of the most recent (since 2015) developments of antibacterial biopolymeric nanofibrous wound dressings is presented. In this review, while discussing about the antibacterial efficiency of such systems, the prospects and challenges are highlighted to draw a roadmap for further progresses in this area.

The Nanosized Dye Adsorbents for Water Treatment

Clean water is a vital element for survival of any living creature and, thus, crucially important to achieve largely and economically for any nation worldwide. However, the astonishingly fast trend of industrialization and population growth and the arisen extensive water pollutions have challenged access to clean water across the world. In this regard, 1.6 million tons of dyes are annually consumed. Thereof, 10%–15% are wasted during use. To decolorize water streams, there is an urgent need for the advanced remediation approaches involving utilization of novel materials and technologies, which are cost and energy efficient. Nanomaterials, with their outstanding physicochemical properties, can potentially resolve the challenge of need to water treatment in a less energy demanding manner. In this review, a variety of the most recent (from 2015 onwards) opportunities arisen from nanomaterials in different dimensionalities, performances, and compositions for water decolorization is introduced and discussed. The state-of-the-art research studies are presented in a classified manner, particularly based on structural dimensionality, to better illustrate the current status of adsorption-based water decolorization using nanomaterials. Considering the introduction of many newly developed nano-adsorbents and their classification based on the dimensionality factor, which has never been employed for this sake in the related literature, a comprehensive review will be presented.

Zeolitic imidazolate framework derived ZnCo2O4 hollow tubular nanofibers for long-life supercapacitors

Uniform one-dimensional metal oxide hollow tubular nanofibers (HTNs) have been controllably prepared using a calcination strategy using electrospun polymer nanofibers as soft templates and zeolitic imidazolate framework nanoparticles as precursors. Utilizing the general synthesis method, the ZnO HTNs, Co₃O₄ HTNs and ZnCo₂O₄ HTNs have been successfully prepared. The optimal ZnCo₂O₄ HTNs, as a representative substance applied in supercapacitors as the positive electrode, delivers a high specific capacity of 181 C g⁻¹ at a current density of 0.5 A g⁻¹, an excellent rate performance of 75.14% and a superior capacity retention of 97.42% after 10 000 cycles. Furthermore, an asymmetric supercapacitor assembled from ZnCo₂O₄ HTNs and active carbon also shows a stable and ultrahigh cycling stability with 95.38% of its original capacity after 20 000 cycle tests.

Uniform metal oxides hollow tubular nanofibers have been controllably prepared by calcination strategy using electrospun polymer nanofibers as soft templates and zeolitic imidazolate framework nanoparticles as precursors for long-life supercapacitor.

Amphiphilic Oxygenated Amorphous Carbon-Graphite Buckypapers with Gas Sensitivity to Polar and Non-Polar VOCs

To precisely control the emission limit of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) even at trace amounts, reactive nanomaterials of, e.g., carbon are demanded. Particularly, considering the polar/non-polar nature of VOCs, amphiphilic carbon nanomaterials with a huge surface area could act as multipurpose VOC sensors. Here, for the first time, a buckypaper sensor composed of oxygenated amorphous carbon (a-CO_x)/graphite (G) nanofilaments is developed. Presence of the oxygen-containing groups rises the selectivity of the sensor to polar VOCs, such as ethanol and acetone through formation of hydrogen bonding, affecting the electron withdrawing ability of the group, the hole carrier density, and, thus, the resistivity. On the other hand, the electrostatic interactions between the toluene aromatic ring and the π electrons of the graphitic crystals cause a formation of charge-transfer complexes, which could be the main mechanism of high responsiveness of the sensor towards non-polar toluene. To the best of my knowledge, an amphiphilic carbon nanofilamentous buckypaper has never been reported for gas sensing, and my device sensing polar/non-polar VOCs is state of the art for environmental control.

Ups and Downs of Water Photodecolorization by Nanocomposite Polymer Nanofibers

Given the exponentially expanding water pollution causing water scarcity, there is an urgent need for operative nanotechnological systems that can purify water, with insignificant energy consumption, and rapidly. Here, we introduce a nanocomposite system based on TiO₂ nanoparticles (NPs) and PES nanofibers (NFs) that can adsorb and then photodecompose organic water pollutants such as dye molecules. We evaluate pros and cons of this system with respect to its purification efficiency and structural properties that can be impacted by the photocatalytic activity of the nanofillers. While the material is superhydrophilic and able to remove 95% methylene blue (MB) from water via adsorption/photodecomposition, its thermomechanical properties decline upon UV irradiation. However, these properties still remain at the level of the neat NFs. The removal behavior is modeled by the first- and second-order kinetic models from the kinetic point of view. The nanocomposite NFs’ removal behavior complies much better with the second-order kinetic model. Overall, such feedbacks implied that the nanocomposite can be effectively applied for water treatment and the structural properties are still as reliable as those of the neat counterpart.

Simulation and theory of open-tube dispersion in short and long capillaries with slip boundaries and retention

Using random walk techniques, high resolution simulations of zone shape are conducted in open capillary tubes for short and long tube conditions. Finite size solutes are used as tracers in this treatment. Slip flow boundary conditions and wall retention are utilized as needed. These simulations are able to reproduce previous work in short and long tubes. For the short tube case where dispersion does not asymptotically approach the classic Taylor-Aris and Golay solutions, the effect of slip flow boundaries in the transient region shows zone shapes with abbreviated tails where the larger slip flow values cause zone compression. The use of slip flow to lower dispersion in capillary-based, wall-coated separations is shown to favor long tube behavior. This is because slip flow is relevant for cases where slip lengths are fractions of small capillary tube diameters. Incorporating slip flow into transport in capillaries favors a very small capillary radius where the cross-sectional diffusion length is very small and sampling times are fast. The purely convective zone shape with slip flow boundaries is derived analytically. Applications for this type of separation, guided by both analytical theory and simulation, show the potential for nano-sized capillary tubes less than 1 μm in diameter and favor very fast isocratic separations. Using long tube retention theory with slip boundaries shows that the dispersion-reducing region is most important in the range 0 ≤ k' ≤ 1, a relatively small retention window. Further discussion of the gradient elution technique and dispersion in packed beds suggests that the general usage of slip flow boundaries is restricted in liquid phase separation systems.

An Amphiphilic, Graphitic Buckypaper Capturing Enzyme Biomolecules from Water

The development of carbon nanomaterials for adsorption based removal of organic pollutants from water is a progressive research subject. In this regard, carbon nanomaterials with bifunctionality towards polar and non-polar or even amphiphilic undesired materials are indeed attractive for further study and implementation. Here, we created carbon buckypaper adsorbents comprising amphiphilic (oxygenated amorphous carbon (a-COx)/graphite (G)) nanofilaments that can dynamically adsorb organic biomolecules (i.e., urease enzyme) and thus purify the wastewaters of relevant industries. Given the dynamic conditions of the test, the adsorbent was highly efficient in adsorption of the enzyme (88%) while being permeable to water (4750 L·h−1m−2bar−1); thus, it holds great promise for further development and upscaling. A subsequent citric acid functionalization declined selectivity of the membrane to urease, implying that the biomolecules adsorb mostly via graphitic domains rather than oxidized, polar amorphous carbon ones.

Stem Cell and Advanced Nano Bioceramic Interactions

Bioceramics are type of biomaterials generally used for orthopaedic applications due to their similar structure with bone. Especially regarding to their osteoinductivity and osteoconductivity, they are used as biodegradable scaffolds for bone regeneration along with mesenchymal stem cells. Since chemical properties of bioceramics are important for regeneration of tissue, physical properties are also important for cell proliferation. In this respect, several different manufacturing methods are used for manufacturing nano scale bioceramics. These nano scale bioceramics are used for regeneration of bone and cartilage both alone or with other types of biomaterials. They can also act as carrier for the delivery of drugs in musculoskeletal infections without causing any systemic toxicity.
