Chronoamperometric Observation and Analysis of Electrocatalytic Ability of Single Pd Nanoparticle for Hydrogen Peroxide Reduction Reaction

Recent Trends and Perspectives in Single-Entity Electrochemistry: A Review with Focus on a Water Splitting Reaction

Electrochemical measurements involving single nanoparticles have attracted considerable research attention. In recent years, various studies have been conducted on single-entity electrochemistry (SEE) for the in-depth analyses of catalytic reactions. Although, several electrocatalysts have been developed for H2 energy production, designing innovative electrocatalysts for this purpose remains a challenging task. Stochastic collision electrochemistry is gaining increased attention because it has led to new findings in the SEE field. Importantly, it facilitates establishing structure activity relationships for electrocatalysts by monitoring transient signals. This article reviews the recent achievements related to hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) using different electrocatalysts at the nanoscale level. In particular, it discusses the electrocatalytic activities of noble metal nanoparticles, including Ag, Au, Pt, and Pd nanoparticles, at the single-particle level. Because heterogeneity is a key factor affecting the catalytic activity of nanostructures, our work focuses on the influence of heterogeneities in catalytic materials on the OER and HER activities. These results may help to achieve a better understanding of the fundamental processes involved in the water splitting reaction.

Observation and Analysis of Staircase Response of Single Palladium Nanoparticle Collision on Gold Ultramicroelectrodes

Collision (or impact) of single palladium nanoparticles (Pd NPs) on gold (Au), copper (Cu), nickel (Ni), and platinum (Pt) ultramicroelectrodes (UMEs) were investigated via electrocatalytic amplification method. Unlike the blip responses of previous Pd NP collision studies, the staircase current response was obtained with the Au UME. The current response, including collision frequency and peak magnitude, was analyzed depending on the material of the UME and the applied potential. Adsorption factors implying the interaction between the Pd NP and the UMEs are suggested based on the experimental results.

Time-Resolved Selective Electrochemical Sensing of Carbon Particles

This work demonstrated a new method for electrochemical detection of carbon black particles based on impact electrochemistry that was capable of selective detection of carbon black from the insulating oxide particles. We systematically studied the electrochemical collision events with carbon black particle suspension solution (pH 7.0 phosphate buffer) at varying carbon black concentrations using a convective condition and a gold microelectrode. We evaluated the effect of bias potential on the number and magnitude of collision spikes by changing the applied potential in chronoamperometry experiments. Our results showed that the biased potential of +0.4 V was the most suitable potential among the tested potential biases. Current blips were observed in the amperometric i-t response, and the spike numbers scaled linearly with the concentration of carbon black particles in the range of 2.5-20 μM (i.e., mass/volume concentration of 0.03 to 0.24 mg L^-1) with the lowest detection limit of 0.396 μM (i.e., mass/volume concentration of 0.00475 mg L^-1). The selective detection of carbon particles in the presence of representative poorly conductive oxide particles in our experimental conditions was achieved. The sensing mechanism of the sensitive and selective detection of carbon black particles is proposed. This work provides the basis for the development of powerful electroanalytical methods and technologies for the detection and classification of carbon particles in varying environmental conditions such as coalmines, engineered carbon particle factories, and coal power plants.

Hydrogen peroxide reduction on single platinum nanoparticles

Understanding oxygen reduction, key to much of electrochemical energy transformation technology, crucially requires exploration of the role of hydrogen peroxide as a possible intermediate especially on catalysts such as Pt which can bring about the 4e reduction of O₂ to water. We reveal that at the single nanoparticle scale the direct platinum catalysed reduction of hydrogen peroxide is found - even at high overpotentials - not to be controlled by the rate mass-transport of the reagents to the interface but by a surface limited process. Further under alkaline (pH 12.3) and near mass-transport free conditions, the single nanoparticle hydrogen peroxide reduction rate goes through a maximum at potentials comparable to the surface deposition of hydrogen (H _upd) with the highest reaction rate occurring when the surface is partially covered in hydrogen.
