Pd-Functionalized SnO₂ Nanofibers Prepared by Shaddock Peels as Bio-Templates for High Gas Sensing Performance toward Butane

Biotemplate-Assisted Growth of ZnO in Gas Sensors for ppb-Level NO2 Detection

With the growing concern over the adverse effects of environmental pollution on human health, the combination of environmentally friendly and nontoxic biomaterials with metal oxide semiconductor materials for electronic devices has emerged as a prominent trend in current research. In this study, we utilized 150 mg apple biotemplates to assist in the hydrothermal synthesis of ZnO nanospheres. It successfully achieved high sensitivity for detecting 35 and 350 ppb NO2 at room temperature, with responses of 13.74 and 132.44%, respectively. Simultaneously, the 5-cycle repeatability and multiple-gas selectivity exhibited significant improvements. The ZnO nanospheres demonstrated enhanced sensing performance compared to pure ZnO nanorods, which is attributed to the following mechanisms: reason I, the modified surface morphology increasing the surface-to-volume ratio; reason II, an increase in oxygen vacancies, leading to reduced crystallinity and a higher electron concentration; reason III, incorporation of carbon elements on the nanostructure surface to increase active sites. The novel gas sensor assisted by the apple pectin biotemplate offers a promising solution for NO2 gas detection, featuring low operating temperatures, low concentrations, and high response sensitivity.

Direct Construction of K-Fe3C@C Nanohybrids Utilizing Waste Biomass of Pomelo Peel as High-Performance Fischer–Tropsch Catalysts

As the only renewable organic carbon source, abundant biomass has long been established and developed to mass-produce functionalized carbon materials. Herein, an extremely facile and green strategy was executed for the first time to in situ construct K-Fe3C@C nanohybrids directly by one-pot carbonizing the pomelo peel impregnated with Fe(NO3)3 solutions. The pyrolytically self-assembled nanohybrids were successfully applied in Fischer–Tropsch synthesis (FTS) and demonstrated high catalytic performance. Accordingly, the optimized K-Fe3C@C catalysts revealed excellent FTS activity (92.6% CO conversion) with highlighted C5+ hydrocarbon selectivity of 61.3% and light olefin (C2-4=) selectivity of 26.0% (olefin/paraffin (O/P) ratio of 6.2). Characterization results further manifest that the high performance was correlated with the in situ formation of the core-shell nanostructure consisting of Fe3C nanoparticles enwrapped by graphitized carbon shells and the intrinsic potassium promoter originated in pomelo peel during high-temperature carbonization. This work provided a facile approach for the low-cost mass-fabrication of high-performance FTS catalysts directly utilizing waste biomass without any chemical pre-treatment or purification.

Porous Ga2 O3 Nanotubes Derived from Urease-Mediated Interfacially-Grown NH4 Ga(OH)2 CO3 for High-Efficient Hydrogen Evolution

The authors proposed a novel template-free strategy, urease-mediated interfacial growth of NH₄ Ga(OH)₂ CO₃ nanotubes at 20-50 °C, to fabricate the porous Ga₂ O₃ nanotubes. The subtlety of the proposed strategy is all the products from urea enzymolysis are utilized in formation of NH₄ Ga(OH)₂ CO₃ precipitates, and the key for interfacial growth of NH₄ Ga(OH)₂ CO₃ nanotubes is the dynamic match between the rate of CO₂ bubble fusion and NH₄ Ga(OH)₂ CO₃ precipitation. The proposed strategy works well for the doped porous Ga₂ O₃ nanotubes. As a proof-of-concept, the porous β-Ga₂ O₃ and β-Ga₂ O₃ :Cr_0.001 nanotubes are used as photocatalysts or co-catalysts with Pt, for H₂ evolution from water splitting. The H₂ evolution rate of porous β-Ga₂ O₃ nanotubes reach 39.3 mmol g^-1 h^-1 with solar-to-hydrogen (STH) conversion efficiency of 2.11% (Hg lamp) or 498 µmol g^-1 h^-1 with STH of 0.03% (Xe lamp) respectively, both about 3 times of β-Ga₂ O₃ nanoparticles synthesized at pH 9.0 without urease. The Cr-doping enhances the in-the-dark H₂ evolution rate pre-lighted by Hg lamp, and Pt co-catalysis further elevates the H₂ evolution rate, for instance, the H₂ evolution rate of Pt-loaded β-Ga₂ O₃ :Cr_0.001 nanotubes reaches 54.7 mmol g^-1 h^-1 with STH of 2.94% under continuous lighting of Hg lamp and 1062 µmol g^-1 h^-1 in-the-dark.

Utilization of pomelo peels to manufacture value-added products: A review

Pomelo peel as a by-product from pomelo consumption is rich in various nutrients and functional compounds, while most of the by-product is disposed as wastes. The utilization of pomelo peels could not only result in valued-added products/ingredients, but also reduce the environmental threats. By mainly reviewing the recent articles, pomelo peels could be directly used to produce candied pomelo peel, tea, jams, etc. Additionally, functional components (essential oils, pectin, polyphenols, etc.) could be extracted from pomelo peels and applied in food, pharmaceutical and chemical fields. The extraction methods exerted important influences on the composition, physicochemical properties, bioactivities and structures of the resultant fractions. Furthermore, pomelo peel was exploited to make adsorbents, bioethanol, etc. For the future investigations, the functionality- or bioactivity-oriented regimes to recovery valuable components from pomelo peel should be developed in an economic, effective and eco-friendly way and their applicability in large-scale production should be addressed.

Inorganic-Diverse Nanostructured Materials for Volatile Organic Compound Sensing

Environmental pollution related to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) has become a global issue which attracts intensive work towards their controlling and monitoring. To this direction various regulations and research towards VOCs detection have been laid down and conducted by many countries. Distinct devices are proposed to monitor the VOCs pollution. Among them, chemiresistor devices comprised of inorganic-semiconducting materials with diverse nanostructures are most attractive because they are cost-effective and eco-friendly. These diverse nanostructured materials-based devices are usually made up of nanoparticles, nanowires/rods, nanocrystals, nanotubes, nanocages, nanocubes, nanocomposites, etc. They can be employed in monitoring the VOCs present in the reliable sources. This review outlines the device-based VOC detection using diverse semiconducting-nanostructured materials and covers more than 340 references that have been published since 2016.
