Numerical Study on the Buckling Behavior of FG Porous Spherical Caps Reinforced by Graphene Platelets

The buckling response of functionally graded (FG) porous spherical caps reinforced by graphene platelets (GPLs) is assessed here, including both symmetric and uniform porosity patterns in the metal matrix, together with five different GPL distributions. The Halpin-Tsai model is here applied, together with an extended rule of mixture to determine the elastic properties and mass density of the selected shells, respectively. The equilibrium equations of the pre-buckling state are here determined according to a linear three-dimensional (3D) elasticity basics and principle of virtual work, whose solution is determined from classical finite elements. The buckling load is, thus, obtained based on the nonlinear Green strain field and generalized geometric stiffness concept. A large parametric investigation studies the sensitivity of the natural frequencies of FG porous spherical caps reinforced by GPLs to different parameters, namely, the porosity coefficients and distributions, together with different polar angles and stiffness coefficients of the elastic foundation, but also different GPL patterns and weight fractions of graphene nanofillers. Results denote that the maximum and minimum buckling loads are reached for GPL-X and GPL-O distributions, respectively. Additionally, the difference between the maximum and minimum critical buckling loads for different porosity distributions is approximately equal to 90%, which belong to symmetric distributions. It is also found that a high weight fraction of GPLs and a high porosity coefficient yield the highest and lowest effects of the structure on the buckling loads of the structure for an amount of 100% and 12.5%, respectively.

Thermoelastic Analysis of Functionally Graded Cylindrical Panels with Piezoelectric Layers

We propose a coupled thermoelastic approach based on the Lord-Shulman (L-S) and Maxwell’s formulations to study the wave propagation in functionally graded (FG) cylindrical panels with piezoelectric layers under a thermal shock loading. The material properties of the FG core layer feature a graded distribution throughout the thickness and vary according to a simple power law. A layerwise differential quadrature method (LW-DQM) is combined with a non-uniform rational B-spline (NURBS) multi-step time integration scheme to discretize the governing equations both in the spatial and time domains. The compatibility conditions of the physical quantities are enforced at the interfaces to describe their structural behavior in a closed form. A validation and comparative analysis with the available literature, together with a convergence study, show the efficiency and stability of the proposed method to handle thermoelastic problems. Numerical applications are herein performed systematically to check for the sensitivity of the thermoelastic response to the material graded index, piezoelectric layer thickness, external electrical voltage, opening angle, and shock thermal loading, which would be very helpful for practical engineering applications.

Improved Energy Absorption Characteristics Based on Elastic Polymer-Modified Porous Material for Multiple Extreme Mechanical Impacts

Energy absorbing materials are crucial for the protection of electronic devices in various applications. In particular, the protection of materials from multiple extreme mechanical impacts imposes stringent requirements on the characteristics of energy absorption and recoverability. In this paper, a novel design of composite material, elastic polymer-modified porous carbon, is proposed to meet such urgent requirements. At the micro level, the polymer fibers form an elastic skeleton in which porous carbon particles are enveloped. Due to such microstructure, the composite material exhibits excellent performance of energy absorption and recoverability simultaneously, which are validated via various experiments. Furthermore, the microphysical mechanism of its superior energy absorption characteristics is demonstrated theoretically. Additionally, the optimized mass proportions of the two composite phases are discussed. In general, this novel design of energy absorbing material improves the reliability of electronic devices and systems exposed to multiple extreme mechanical impacts.

Free Vibration Analysis of Triclinic Nanobeams Based on the Differential Quadrature Method

In this work, the nonlocal strain gradient theory is applied to study the free vibration response of a Timoshenko beam made of triclinic material. The governing equations of the problem and the associated boundary conditions are obtained by means of the Hamiltonian principle, whereby the generalized differential quadrature (GDQ) method is implemented as numerical tool to solve the eigenvalue problem in a discrete form. Different combinations of boundary conditions are also considered, which include simply-supports, clamped supports and free edges. Starting with some pioneering works from the literature about isotropic nanobeams, a convergence analysis is first performed, and the accuracy of the proposed size-dependent anisotropic beam model is checked. A large parametric investigation studies the effect of the nonlocal, geometry, and strain gradient parameters, together with the boundary conditions, on the vibration response of the anisotropic nanobeams, as useful for practical engineering applications.

Nonlocal Buckling Analysis of Composite Curved Beams Reinforced with Functionally Graded Carbon Nanotubes

This work deals with the size-dependent buckling response of functionally graded carbon nanotube-reinforced composite (FG-CNTRC) (FG-CNTRC) curved beams based on a higher-order shear deformation beam theory in conjunction with the Eringen Nonlocal Differential Model (ENDM). The material properties were estimated using the rule of mixtures. The Hamiltonian principle was employed to derive the governing equations of the problem which were, in turn, solved via the Galerkin method to obtain the critical buckling load of FG-CNTRC curved beams with different boundary conditions. A detailed parametric study was carried out to investigate the influence of the nonlocal parameter, CNTs volume fraction, opening angle, slenderness ratio, and boundary conditions on the mechanical buckling characteristics of FG-CNTRC curved beams. A large parametric investigation was performed on the mechanical buckling behavior of FG-CNTRC curved beams, which included different CNT distribution schemes, as useful for design purposes in many practical engineering applications.
