Significant Enhancement of the Visible Light Photocatalytic Properties in 3D BiFeO₃/Graphene Composites

Effective degradation of synthetic micropollutants and real textile wastewater via a visible light-activated persulfate system using novel spinach leaf-derived biochar

A novel biochar (BC), derived from spinach leaves, was utilized as an activator for persulfate (PS) in the degradation of methylene blue (MB) dye under visible light conditions. Thorough analyses were conducted to characterize the physical and chemical properties of the biochar. The (BC + light)/PS system exhibited superior MB degradation efficiency at 83.36%, surpassing the performance of (BC + light)/hydrogen peroxide and (BC + light)/peroxymonosulfate systems. The optimal conditions were ascertained through the implementation of response surface methodology. Moreover, the (BC + light)/PS system demonstrated notable degradation ratios of 90.82%, 81.88%, and 84.82% for bromothymol blue dye, paracetamol, and chlorpyrifos, respectively, under optimal conditions. The predominant reactive species responsible for MB degradation were identified as sulfate radicals. Notably, the proposed system consistently achieved high removal efficiencies of 99.02%, 96.97%, 94.94%, 92%, and 90.35% for MB in five consecutive runs. The applicability of the suggested system was further validated through its effectiveness in treating real textile wastewater, exhibiting a substantial MB removal efficiency of 98.31% and dissolved organic carbon mineralization of 87.49%.

Interfacial engineering in 3D/2D and 1D/2D bismuth ferrite (BiFeO3)/Graphene oxide nanocomposites for the enhanced photocatalytic activities under sunlight

3D-particulate and 1D-fiber structures of multiferroic bismuth ferrite (BiFeO₃/BFO) and their composites with 2D-graphene oxide (GO) have been developed to exploit the different scheme of interfacial engineering as 3D/2D and 1D/2D systems. Particulates and fibers of BFO were developed via sol-gel and electrospinning fabrication approaches respectively and their integration with GO was performed via the ultrasonic-assisted chemical reduction process. The crystalline and phase formation of BiFeO₃ and GO was confirmed from the XRD patterns obtained. The electron microscopic images revealed the characteristic integration of 3D particulates (with average size of 100 nm) and 1D fibers (with diameter of ~150 nm and few μm length) onto the 2D GO layers (thickness of ~27 nm). XPS analysis revealed that the BFO nanostructures have been integrated onto the GO through chemisorptions process, where it indicated that the ultrasonic process engineers the interface through the chemical modification of the surface of these 3D/2D and 1D/2D nanostructures. The photophysical studies such as the impedance and photocurrent measurements showed that the charge separation and recombination resistance is significantly enhanced in the system, which can directly be attributed to the effective interfacial engineering in the developed hetero-morphological composites. The degradation studies against a model pollutant Rhodamine B revealed that the developed nanocomposites exhibit superior photocatalytic activity via the effective generation of OH radicals as confirmed by the radical analysis studies (100% degradation in 150 and 90 min for 15% GO/BFO particulate and fiber composites, respectively). The developed system also demonstrated excellent photocatalytic recyclability, indicated their enhanced stability.

Effective Strategies, Mechanisms, and Photocatalytic Efficiency of Semiconductor Nanomaterials Incorporating rGO for Environmental Contaminant Degradation

The water pollution problems severely affect the natural water resources due to the large disposal of dyes, heavy metals, antibiotics, and pesticides. Advanced oxidation processes (AOP) have been developed using semiconductor nanomaterials as photocatalysts for water treatment as an essential strategy to minimize environmental pollution. Significant research efforts have been dedicated over the past few years to enhancing the photocatalytic efficiencies of semiconductor nanomaterials. Graphene-based composites created by integrating reduced graphene oxide (rGO) into various semiconductor nanomaterials enable the unique characteristics of graphene, such as the extended range of light absorption, the separation of charges, and the high capacity of adsorption of pollutants. Therefore, rGO-based composites improve the overall visible-light photocatalytic efficiency and lead to a new pathway for high-performance photocatalysts’ potential applications. This brief review illustrates the strategies of combining rGO with various semiconductor nanomaterials and focuses primarily on modification and efficiency towards environmental contaminants.

Piezoelectric BiFeO3 Thin Films: Optimization of MOCVD Process on Si

This paper presents a simple and optimized metal organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) protocol for the deposition of perovskite BiFeO₃ films on silicon-based substrates, in order to move toward the next generation of lead-free hybrid energy harvesters. A bi-metal mixture that is composed of Bi(phenyl)₃, and Fe(tmhd)₃ has been used as a precursor source. BiFeO₃ films have been grown by MOCVD on IrO₂/Si substrates, in which the conductive IrO₂ functions as a bottom electrode and a buffer layer. BiFeO₃ films have been analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) for structural characterization and by field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) coupled with energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis for the morphological and chemical characterizations, respectively. These studies have shown that the deposited films are polycrystalline, pure BiFeO₃ phase highly homogenous in morphology and composition all over the entire substrate surface. Piezoelectric force microscopy (PFM) and Piezoelectric Force Spectroscopy (PFS) checked the piezoelectric and ferroelectric properties of the film.

Investigation of Polyol Process for the Synthesis of Highly Pure BiFeO3 Ovoid-Like Shape Nanostructured Powders

Exclusive and unprecedented interest was accorded in this paper to the synthesis of BiFeO₃ nanopowders by the polyol process. The synthesis protocol was explored and adjusted to control the purity and the grain size of the final product. The optimum parameters were carefully established and an average crystallite size of about 40 nm was obtained. XRD and Mössbauer measurements proved the high purity of the synthesized nanostructurated powders and confirmed the persistence of the rhombohedral R3c symmetry. The first studies on the magnetic properties show a noticeable widening of the hysteresis loop despite the remaining cycloidal magnetic structure, promoting the enhancement of the ferromagnetic order and consequently the magnetoelectric coupling compared to micrometric size powders.

N-Doped Carbon-Coated ZnS with Sulfur-Vacancy Defect for Enhanced Photocatalytic Activity in the Visible Light Region

In this work, N-doped carbon-coated ZnS with a sulfur-vacancy defect (ZnS@N-C) was performed for the visible-light-driven photodegradation of tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH). The obtained ZnS@N-C exhibited enhanced photocatalytic activity compared with ZnS for TCH removal. Among these ZnS@N-C composites, ZnS@N-C-3 with N-doped content of 3.01% (100 nm) presented the best visible-light photocatalytic activity and superior long-term photocatalytic stability after five cycle times for TCH removal in the visible light region. This may be ascribed to the interface between the N-doped carbon shell and ZnS with a sulfur-vacancy defect for efficient charge transfer and the restrained recombination of charge carriers. Electron spin resonance (ESR) results indicate that the ·O₂^‒ radical plays a crucial role in the enhanced photocatalytic activity of ZnS@N-C-3.

Effect of Graphene Oxide Nano-Sheets on Structural, Morphological and Photocatalytic Activity of BiFeO3-Based Nanostructures

Photocatalysts are widely used for the elimination of organic contaminants from waste-water and H2 evaluation by water-splitting. Herein, the nanohybrids of lanthanum (La) and selenium (Se) co-doped bismuth ferrites with graphene oxide were synthesized. A structural analysis from X-ray diffraction confirmed the transition of phases from rhombohedral to the distorted orthorhombic. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed that the graphene nano-sheets homogenously covered La-Se co-doped bismuth ferrites nanoparticles, particularly the (Bi0.92La0.08Fe0.50Se0.50O3-graphene oxide) LBFSe50-G sample. Moreover, the band-gap nanohybrids of La-Se co-doped bismuth ferrites were estimated from diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS), which showed a variation from 1.84 to 2.09 eV, because the lowering of the band-gap can enhance photocatalytic degradation efficiency. Additionally, the photo-degradation efficiencies increased after the incorporation of graphene nano-sheets onto the La-Se co-doped bismuth ferrite. The maximum degradation efficiency of the LBFSe50-G sample was up to 80%, which may have been due to reduced band-gap and availability of enhanced surface area for incoming photons at the surface of the photocatalyst. Furthermore, photoluminescence spectra confirmed that the graphene oxide provided more electron-capturing sites, which decreased the recombination time of the photo-generated charge carriers. Thus, we can propose that the use of nanohybrids of La-Se co-doped bismuth ferrite with graphene oxide nano-sheets is a promising approach for both water-treatment and water-splitting, with better efficiencies of BiFeO3.

Study on the Properties of Vertical Carbon Nanotube Films Grown on Stainless Steel Bipolar Plates

Research on the conductivity and corrosion resistance of stainless steel bipolar plates in a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) is commonly performed in a normal-temperature environment (about 20 °C). However, these fuel cells must function in low-temperature environments (lower than 0 °C) in some conditions, such as in vehicle fuel cells and in portable power supplies that operate during the winter in northern China. Stainless steel bipolar plates have higher requirements in terms of their hydrophobic and anti-icing properties, in addition to needing high conductivity and corrosion resistance. In this study, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are grown on the surface of 304 stainless steel (304 SS) without a catalyst coating by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD), which is a simple and cheap method that allows stainless steel to be used as bipolar plates in low-temperature environments. The Raman spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) results show that the CNTs grown on the surface of 304 SS have different morphologies. The stainless steel samples with different CNT morphologies are tested by hydrophobicity and in situ icing experiments to prove that vertical CNTs can achieve a superhydrophobic state and have good anti-icing properties. The interfacial contact resistance (ICR) of the bare 304 SS and the 304 SS with vertical CNTs is compared by voltammetry, and then the corrosion resistances of both types is compared in a simulated PEMFC environment via a three-electrode system. Consequently, the ICR of the 304 SS with vertical CNTs was lower than the bare 304 SS. The corrosion potential was positive, and the corrosion current density was greatly reduced for the stainless steel with vertical CNTs grown directly on its surface when compared with the bare 304 SS. The experimental results show that vertical CNTs have good application prospects as bipolar plates for PEMFCs in low-temperature environments.
