Straightforward Immobilization of Phosphonic Acids and Phosphoric Acid Esters on Mesoporous Silica and Their Application in an Asymmetric Aldol Reaction

Black-wattle tannin/kraft lignin H3PO4-activated carbon xerogels as excellent and sustainable adsorbents

This work proposed new black-wattle tannin/kraft lignin H₃PO₄-activated carbon xerogels as sustainable and efficient adsorbents. The precursors were chosen based on their eco-friendly and cost-effective nature, aiming to achieve adsorbents with high adsorption capacities. Carbon xerogels were synthesized through polycondensation with formaldehyde and alkaline catalyst in a simple one-pot procedure. Activation was performed using H₃PO₄ in a tubular furnace (500 °C), under a nitrogen atmosphere. Results show that the inclusion of the kraft lignin led to changes in the morphology of the materials, facilitating the development of their porous structure and increasing specific surface area and pore volume. The best adsorbent (XLT 50 %) was synthesized using a 1:1 tannin/kraft lignin mass ratio. This material presented an adsorption capacity of nearly 1150 mg g^-1 of methylene blue (pH = 5 and T = 298 K), which was linked to its high specific surface area of 1348 m² g^-1. The adsorption process followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, whereas the adsorption isotherms were best fitted by the Sips model. The XLT 50 % presented good reusability properties, maintaining its adsorption capacity for 3 cycles. Finally, the XLT 50 % presented good adsorptive properties toward other pollutants (methyl orange, 4-chlorophenol, and hexavalent chromium), indicating its versatility for adsorption processes.

Speciation and Proton Conductivity of Phosphoric Acid Confined in Mesoporous Silica

Phosphoric acid (PA) confined in a commercial mesoporous silica (CARIACT G) with porous size in the range of 3 to 10 nm was studied in relation to its coordination with the silanol groups on the silica surface as a function of temperature, up to 180 °C, using 31P and 29Si MAS NMR spectroscopy. As the temperature increases, the coordination of Si and P in the mesopores depends on the pore size, that is, on the area/volume ratio of the silica matrix. In the mesoporous silica with the higher pore size (10 nm), a considerable fraction of PA is nonbonded to the silanol groups on the surface, and it seems to be responsible for its higher conductivity at temperatures above 120 °C as compared to the samples with a smaller pore size. The electrical conductivity of the functionalized mesoporous silica was higher than that reported for other silico-phosphoric composites synthesized by sol-gel methods using soft templates, which require high-temperature calcination and high-cost reagents and are close to that of the best PA-doped polybenzimidazole membranes used in high-temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cells (HT-PEMFCs). The rate of PA release from the mesoporous silica matrix when the system is exposed to water has been measured, and it was found to be strongly dependent on the pore size. The low cost and simplicity of the PA-functionalized mesoporous silica preparation method makes this material a promising candidate to be used as an electrolyte in HT-PEMFCs.

Improvement of the froth flotation of LiAlO2 and melilite solid solution via pre-functionalization

In this work froth flotation studies with LiAlO₂ (lithium-containing phase) and Melilite solid solution (gangue phase) are presented. The system was optimized with standard collectors and with compounds so far not applied as collectors. Furthermore, the principle of self-assembled monolayers was introduced to a froth flotation process for the first time resulting in excellent yields and selectivities.

Highly enhanced activity and stability via affinity induced immobilization β-glucosidase from Aspergillus niger onto amino-based silica for the biotransformation of ginsenoside Rb1

In this study, an enzyme immobilization method for the effective biotransformation of ginsenoside Rb1 to impart activity and stability was developed. Using a hydrolase enzyme model, β-glucosidase from Aspergillus niger, immobilization within chemically affinity-linked amino-based silica provided an immobilization efficiency 5.86-fold higher than that of free enzyme. Compared with the free enzyme, the immobilized enzyme functioned optimally at a wider pH range and had higher thermostability. The optimum pH for the free and immobilized enzymes was 5.5. The optimal reaction temperature of the immobilized enzyme was 45 °C, which was 5 °C higher than that of the free enzyme. The Michaelis constant (K_m) values before and after immobilization were 0.482 mmol•L^-1 and 0.387 mmol•L^-1, respectively. The catalytic rate (K_cat) for the immobilized and free enzymes was 22.269 mmol•L^-1and 8.800 mmol•L^-1, respectively, and the catalytic efficiency (K_cat/K_m) activity of the immobilized enzyme was 3.30-fold higher than that of the free enzyme. The immobilized enzyme could preserve 97 % of the activity after 45 cycles of repeated use. The high catalytic activity and significant operational stability are beneficial for industrial applications.

Mechanisms and Intermediates in the True Liquid Crystal Templating Synthesis of Mesoporous Silica Materials

Mesoporous silica materials (MSMs) produced by true liquid crystal templating (TLCT) are often considered as direct inverted replicas of the initial lyotropic liquid crystal (LLC) phase. However, the predictive design of tailor-made MSMs requires the full knowledge of the TLCT process, which is still incomplete. Here, we tackle this issue by monitoring the structural evolution during the templating process by small-angle X-ray scattering, showing that after the addition of the silica source the reaction mixture is first isotropic and then an intermediary liquid crystal phase appears, which is the key to the success of the templating process, namely the formation of ordered MSMs. We analyze the structure and the formation dynamics of this intermediary phase and present a simple theoretical model, which allows us to connect the structural parameters of the initial LLC and the MSM. These results provide an enhanced understanding of the TLCT process and are an important step toward the predictable synthesis of new MSMs in the future.

A Brief Overview of Recent Progress in Porous Silica as Catalyst Supports

Porous silica particles have shown applications in various technological fields including their use as catalyst supports in heterogeneous catalysis. The mesoporous silica particles have ordered porosity, high surface area, and good chemical stability. These interesting structural or textural properties make porous silica an attractive material for use as catalyst supports in various heterogeneous catalysis reactions. The colloidal nature of the porous silica particles is highly useful in catalytic applications as it guarantees better mass transfer properties and uniform distribution of the various metal or metal oxide nanocatalysts in solution. The catalysts show high activity, low degree of metal leaching, and ease in recycling when supported or immobilized on porous silica-based materials. In this overview, we have pointed out the importance of porous silica as catalyst supports. A variety of chemical reactions catalyzed by different catalysts loaded or embedded in porous silica supports are studied. The latest reports from the literature about the use of porous silica-based materials as catalyst supports are listed and analyzed. The new and continued trends are discussed with examples.
