Advances In Borophene: Synthesis, Tunable Properties, and Energy Storage Applications

Monolayer boron nanosheet, commonly known as borophene, has garnered significant attention in recent years due to its unique structural, electronic, mechanical, and thermal properties. This review paper provides a comprehensive overview of the advancements in the synthetic strategies, tunable properties, and prospective applications of borophene, specifically focusing on its potential in energy storage devices. The review begins by discussing the various synthesis techniques for borophene, including molecular beam epitaxy (MBE), chemical vapor deposition (CVD), and chemical methods, such as ultrasonic exfoliation and thermal decomposition of boron-containing precursors. The tunable properties of borophene, including its electronic, mechanical, and thermal characteristics, are extensively reviewed, with discussions on its bandgap engineering, plasmonic behavior, and thermal conductivity. Moreover, the potential applications of borophene in energy storage devices, particularly as anode materials in metal-ion batteries and supercapacitors, along with its prospects in other energy storage systems, such as sodium-oxygen batteries, are succinctly, discussed. Hence, this review provides valuable insights into the synthesis, properties, and applications of borophene, offering much-desired guidance for further research and development in this promising area of nanomaterials science.

Fabrication of Ru loaded MgB2 with guar gum hybrid for photocatalytic degradation of crystal violet

Today, dyes/pigment-based materials are confronting a serious issue in harming marine ecology. Annihilate these serious water pollutants using photoactive 2D nanohybrid catalysts showed promising comparativeness over available photocatalysts. In the present work, a facile route to decorate Ruthenium (Ru) on 2D MgB2 flower-like nanostructures was developed via ecofriendly guar gum biopolymer substantial template (MgB2/GG@Ru NFS) and its photocatalytic performance was reported. Synthesis of MgB2@Ru, MgB2/GG@Ru NFS and commercial MgB2, was studied by FTIR, XRD, FE-SEM, EDX, AFM, TEM, UV-vis spectra, and XPS analysis. From the results, the MgB2/GG@Ru NFS exhibited a superior photocatalytic performance (99.7 %) than its precursors MgB2@Ru (79.7 %), and MgB2 (53.7 %), with the degradation efficiency of the crystal violet (CV) within 100 min under visible light irradiation. The proposed photo-catalyst MgB2/GG@Ru NFS showed negligible loss of photocatalytic activity even after five successive cycles, revealing its reusability and enhanced stability due to the network structure. The photocatalytic mechanism for MgB2/GG@Ru NFS was evaluated by trapping experiment of active species, verifying that superoxide (O2-) and electron (e-) contributed significant role in the dye degradation.

The translational paradigm of nanobiomaterials: Biological chemistry to modern applications

Recently nanotechnology has evolved as one of the most revolutionary technologies in the world. It has now become a multi-trillion-dollar business that covers the production of physical, chemical, and biological systems at scales ranging from atomic and molecular levels to a wide range of industrial applications, such as electronics, medicine, and cosmetics. Nanobiomaterials synthesis are promising approaches produced from various biological elements be it plants, bacteria, peptides, nucleic acids, etc. Owing to the better biocompatibility and biological approach of synthesis, they have gained immense attention in the biomedical field. Moreover, due to their scaled-down sized property, nanobiomaterials exhibit remarkable features which make them the potential candidate for different domains of tissue engineering, materials science, pharmacology, biosensors, etc. Miscellaneous characterization techniques have been utilized for the characterization of nanobiomaterials. Currently, the commercial transition of nanotechnology from the research level to the industrial level in the form of nano-scaffolds, implants, and biosensors is stimulating the whole biomedical field starting from bio-mimetic nacres to 3D printing, multiple nanofibers like silk fibers functionalizing as drug delivery systems and in cancer therapy. The contribution of single quantum dot nanoparticles in biological tagging typically in the discipline of genomics and proteomics is noteworthy. This review focuses on the diverse emerging applications of Nanobiomaterials and their mechanistic advancements owing to their physiochemical properties leading to the growth of industries on different biomedical measures. Alongside the implementation of such nanobiomaterials in several drug and gene delivery approaches, optical coding, photodynamic cancer therapy, and vapor sensing have been elaborately discussed in this review. Different parameters based on current challenges and future perspectives are also discussed here.

Discovery of Discrete Stages in the Oxidation of exo-Tetrahydrodicyclopentadiene (C10H16) Droplets Doped with Titanium-Aluminum-Boron Reactive Mixed-Metal Nanopowder

Titanium (Ti), aluminum (Al), and boron (B) reactive mixed-metal nanopowders (Ti-Al-B RMNPs) represent attractive additives to hydrocarbon fuels such as exo-tetrahydrodicyclopentadiene (C₁₀H₁₆; JP-10) enhancing the limited volumetric energy densities of traditional hydrocarbons, but fundamental mechanisms and combustion stages in the oxidation have been obscure. This understanding is of vital significance in the development of next-generation propulsion systems and energy-generation technologies. Here, we expose distinct oxidation stages of single droplets of JP-10 doped with Ti-Al-B-RMNP exploiting innovative ultrasonic levitator technology coupled with time-resolved spectroscopic (UV-vis) and imaging diagnostics (optical and infrared). Two spatially and temporally distinct stages of combustion define a glow flame stage in which JP-10 and nanoparticles combust via a homogeneous gas phase (Al) and heterogeneous gas-surface oxidation (Ti, B) and a slower diffusion flame stage associated with the oxidation of JP-10. These findings enable the development of next-generation RMNP fuel additives with superior payload delivery capabilities.

Borophene as an emerging 2D flatland for biomedical applications: current challenges and future prospects

Recently, two-dimensional (2D)-borophene has emerged as a remarkable translational nanomaterial substituting its predecessors in the field of biomedical sensors, diagnostic tools, high-performance healthcare devices, super-capacitors, and energy storage devices. Borophene justifies its demand due to high-performance and controlled optical, electrical, mechanical, thermal, and magnetic properties as compared with other 2D-nanomaterials. However, continuous efforts are being made to translate theoretical and experimental knowledge into pragmatic platforms. To cover the associated knowledge gap, this review explores the computational and experimental chemistry needed to optimize borophene with desired properties. High electrical conductivity due to destabilization of the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO), nano-engineering at the monolayer level, chemistry-oriented biocompatibility, and photo-induced features project borophene for biosensing, bioimaging, cancer treatment, and theragnostic applications. Besides, the polymorphs of borophene have been useful to develop specific bonding for DNA sequencing and high-performance medical equipment. In this review, an overall critical and careful discussion of systematic advancements in borophene-based futuristic biomedical applications including artificial intelligence (AI), Internet-of-Things (IoT), and Internet-of-Medical Things (IoMT) assisted smart devices in healthcare to develop high-performance biomedical systems along with challenges and prospects is extensively addressed. Consequently, this review will serve as a key supportive platform as it explores borophene for next-generation biomedical applications. Finally, we have proposed the potential use of borophene in healthcare management strategies.

Relative Stability of Boron Planar Clusters in Diatomic Molecular Model

In the recently introduced phenomenological diatomic molecular model imagining the clusters as certain constructions of pair interatomic chemical bonds, there are estimated specific (per atom) binding energies of small all-boron planar clusters B_n, n = 1–15, in neutral single-anionic and single-cationic charge states. The theoretically obtained hierarchy of their relative stability/formation probability correlates not only with results of previous calculations, but also with available experimental mass-spectra of boron planar clusters generated in process of evaporation/ablation of boron-rich materials. Some overestimation in binding energies that are characteristic of the diatomic approach could be related to differences in approximations made during previous calculations, as well as measurement errors of these energies. According to the diatomic molecular model, equilibrium binding energies per B atom and B–B bond lengths are expected within ranges 0.37–6.26 eV and 1.58–1.65 Å, respectively.

Scalable Production of Freestanding Few-Layer β12-Borophene Single Crystalline Sheets as Efficient Electrocatalysts for Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

Two-dimensional (2D) borophene has attracted tremendous interest due to its fascinating properties, which have potential applications in catalysts, energy storage devices, and high-speed transistors. In the past few years, borophene was theoretically predicted as an ideal electrode material for lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries because of its low-density, metallic conductivity, high Li-ion surface mobility, and strong interface bonding energy to polysulfide. But until now, borophene-based Li-S batteries have not yet been achieved in experiments due to the absence of a large-scale synthetic method of freestanding borophene nanostructures with a high enough structural stability, conductivity, and uniformity. Herein, we developed a low-temperature liquid exfoliation (LTLE) method to synthesize freestanding few-layer β₁₂-borophene single-crystalline sheets with a P6¯m2 symmetry in tens of milligrams. The as-synthesized 2D sheets were used as the polysulfide immobilizers and electrocatalysts of Li-S batteries. The resulting borophene-based Li-S battery delivered an extralarge areal capacity of 5.2 mAh cm^-2 at a high sulfur loading of 7.8 mg cm^-2, an excellent rate performance of 8 C (@721 mAh g^-1), and an ultralow capacity fading rate of 0.039% in 1000 cycles, outperforming commercial Li-ion batteries and many other 2D material-based Li-S batteries. Based on the density functional theory model, the excellent electrochemical performances of the borophene-based Li-S batteries should originate from the enormous enhancement of β₁₂-borophene sheets for both the surface migration of the Li-ions and the adsorption energy of Li₂S_n clusters. Our results thus demonstrate a great potential for scalable production of freestanding β₁₂-borophene single-crystalline sheets in future high-performance Li-S batteries.

Theoretical Design of Novel Boron-Based Nanowires via Inverse Sandwich Clusters

Borophene has important application value, boron nanomaterials doped with transition metal have wondrous structures and chemical bonding. However, little attention was paid to the boron nanowires (NWs). Inspired by the novel metal boron clusters Ln₂B_n⁻ (Ln = La, Pr, Tb, n = 7–9) adopting inverse sandwich configuration, we examined Sc₂B₈ and Y₂B₈ clusters in such novel structure and found that they are the global minima and show good stability. Thus, based on the novel structural moiety and first-principles calculations, we connected the inverse sandwich clusters into one-dimensional (1D) nanowires by sharing B−B bridges between adjacent clusters, and the 1D-Sc₄B₂₄ and 1D-Y₂B₁₂ were reached after structural relaxation. The two nanowires were identified to be stable in thermodynamical, dynamical and thermal aspects. Both nanowires are nonmagnetic, the 1D-Sc₄B₂₄ NW is a direct-bandgap semiconductor, while the 1D-Y₂B₁₂ NW shows metallic feature. Our theoretical results revealed that the inverse sandwich structure is the most energy-favored configuration for transition metal borides Sc₂B₈ and Y₂B₈, and the inverse sandwich motif can be extended to 1D nanowires, providing useful guidance for designing novel boron-based nanowires with diverse electronic properties.

Borophene and Boron Fullerene Materials in Hydrogen Storage: Opportunities and Challenges

Two-dimensional materials have led to a leap forward in materials science research, especially in the fields of energy conversion and storage. Borophene and its spherical counterpart boron fullerene represent emerging materials that have attracted much attention in the whole area of advanced energy materials and technologies. Owing to their prominent features, such as electronic environment and geometry, borophene and boron fullerene have been used in versatile applications, such as supercapacitors, superconductors, anode materials for photochemical water splitting, and biosensors. Herein, one of the most promising applications/areas of hydrogen storage is discussed. Boron fullerenes have been considered and discussed for hydrogen-storage applications, and recently borophene was also included in the list of materials with promising hydrogen-storage properties. Studies focus mainly on doped borophene systems over pristine borophene due to enhanced features available upon decoration with metal atoms. This Review introduces very recent progress and novel paradigms with respect to both borophene derivatives and boron fullerene based systems reported for hydrogen storage, with a focus on the synthesis, physiochemical properties, hydrogen-storage mechanism, and practical applications.

Borophene: New Sensation in Flatland

Borophene, a 2D allotrope of boron and the lightest elemental Dirac material, is the latest very promising 2D material owing to its unique structural and electronic characteristics of the X₃ and β₁₂ phases. The high atomic density on ridgelines of the β₁₂ phase of borophene provides a substantial orbital overlap, which leads to an excellent electron density in the conduction level and thus to a highly metallic behavior. These unique structural characteristics and electronic properties of borophene attract significant scientific interest. Herein, approaches for crystal growth/synthesis of these unique nanostructures and their potential technological applications are discussed. Various substrate-supported ultrahigh-vacuum growth techniques for borophene, such as molecular beam epitaxy, atomic layer deposition, and chemical vapor deposition, along with their challenges, are also summarized. The sonochemical exfoliation and modified Hummer's technique for the synthesis of free-standing borophene are also discussed. Solution-phase exfoliation seems to address the scalability issues and expands the applications of these unique materials to various fields, including renewable energy devices and ultrafast sensors. Furthermore, the electronic, optical, thermal, and elastic properties of borophene are thoroughly discussed and are compared with those of graphene and its "cousins." Numerous frontline applications are envisaged and an outlook is presented.

Perfect cubic La-doped boron clusters La6&[La@B24]+/0 as the embryos of low-dimensional lanthanide boride nanomaterials

La-doped boron nanoclusters have received considerable attention due to their unique structures and bonding. Inspired by recent experimental observations of the inverse sandwich D_8h La₂B₈ (1) and triple-decker C_2v La₃B₁₄⁻ (2) and based on extensive global searches and first-principles theory investigations, we present herein the possibility of the perfect cubic La-doped boron clusters O_h La₆&[La@B₂₄]⁺ (3, ¹A_1g) and O_h La₆&[La@B₂₄] (4, ²A_2g) which appear to be the embryos of the metallic one-dimensional La₁₀B₃₂ (5) nanowire, two-dimensional La₃B₁₀ (6) nanosheet, and three-dimensional LaB₆ (7) nanocrystal, facilitating a bottom-up approach to build cubic lanthanide boride nanostructures from gas-phase clusters. Detailed molecular orbital and bonding analyses indicate that effective (d–p)σ, (d–p)π and (d–p)δ covalent coordination interactions exist in La₆&[La@B₂₄]^+/0 (3/4) clusters, while the 1D La₁₀B₃₂ (5), 2D La₃B₁₀ (6), and 3D LaB₆ (7) crystals exhibit mainly electrostatic interactions between the trivalent La centers and cubic B₂₄ frameworks, with weak but discernible coordination contributions from La (5d) ← B (2p) back-donations. The IR and Raman spectra of La₆&[La@B₂₄]^+/0 (3/4) and band structures of La₁₀B₃₂ (5) and La₃B₁₀ (6) are computationally simulated to facilitate their future characterizations.

Perfect cubic clusters O_h La₆&[La@B₂₄]^+/0 are predicted at first-principles levels to be the embryos of 1D La₁₀B₃₂, 2D La₃B₁₀, and 3D LaB₆ lanthanide boride nanomaterials in a bottom-up approach.

Borophene Is a Promising 2D Allotropic Material for Biomedical Devices

Allotropic 2D materials are the new frontier of materials science, due to their unique strategic properties and application within several sciences. Allotropic 2D materials have shown tunable physical, chemical, biochemical, and optical characteristics, and among the allotropic materials, graphene has been widely investigated for its interesting properties, which are highly required in biomedical applications. Recently, the synthesis of thin 2D boron sheets, developed on Ag(111) substrates, was able to create a 2D triangular structure called borophene (BO). Borophene has consistently shown anisotropic behavior similar to graphene. In this topical review, we will describe the main properties and latest applications of borophene. This review will critically describe the most interesting uses of borophene as part of electronic and optical circuits. Moreover, we will report how borophene can be an innovative component of sensors within biomedical devices, and we will discuss its use in nanotechnologies and theranostic applications. The conclusions will provide insight into the latest frontiers of translational medicine involving this novel and strategic 2D allotropic material.
