Hybrid CoO Nanowires Coated with Uniform Polypyrrole Nanolayers for High-Performance Energy Storage Devices

Tailoring NiCoCu layered double hydroxide with Ag-citrate/polyaniline/functionalized SWCNTs nanocomposites for supercapacitor applications

Supercapacitors have substantially altered the landscape of sophisticated energy storage devices with their exceptional power density along with prolonged cyclic stability. On the contrary, their energy density remains low, requiring research to compete with conventional battery storage devices. This study addresses the disparities between energy and power densities in energy storage technologies by exploring the integration of layered double hydroxides (LDH) and highly conductive materials to develop an innovative energy storage system. Four electrodes were fabricated via a hydrothermal process using NiCoCu LDH, Ag-citrate, PANI, and f-SWCNTs. The optimal electrode demonstrated exceptional electrochemical properties; at 0.5 A g-1, it possessed specific capacitances of 807 F g-1, twice as high as those of the pure sample. The constructed asymmetric supercapacitor device attained energy densities of 62.15 W h kg-1 and 22.44 W h kg-1, corresponding to power densities of 1275 W kg-1 and 11 900 W kg-1, respectively. Furthermore, it maintained 100% cyclic stability and a coulombic efficiency of 95% for 4000 charge-discharge cycles. The concept of a supercapacitor of the hybrid grade was reinforced by power law investigations, which unveiled b-values in the interval of 0.5 to 1. This research emphasizes the considerable potential of supercapacitor-grade NiCoCu LDH/Ag-citrate-PANI-f-SWCNTs nanocomposites for superior rate performance, robust cycle stability, and enhanced energy storage capacity.

Synthesis, Characterization and Electrochemical Performance of a Redox-Responsive Polybenzopyrrole@Nickel Oxide Nanocomposite for Robust and Efficient Faraday Energy Storage

A polybenzopyrrole@nickel oxide (Pbp@NiO) nanocomposite was synthesized by an oxidative chemical one-pot method and tested as an active material for hybrid electrodes in an electrochemical supercapattery device. The as-prepared composite material exhibits a desirable 3D cross-linked nanostructured morphology and a synergistic effect between the polymer and metal oxide, which improved both physical properties and electrochemical performance. The unprocessed material was characterized by X-ray diffraction, FTIR and UV-Vis spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy/energy disperse X-ray analysis, and thermogravimetry. The nanocomposite material was deposited without a binder on gold current collectors and investigated for electrochemical behavior and performance in a symmetrical two- and three-electrode cell setup. A high specific capacity of up to 105 C g-1 was obtained for the Pbp@NiO-based electrodes with a gravimetric energy density of 17.5 Wh kg-1, a power density of 1925 W kg-1, and excellent stability over 10,000 cycles.

Synthesis, Properties, and Selected Technical Applications of Magnesium Oxide Nanoparticles: A Review

In the last few decades, there has been a trend involving the use of nanoscale fillers in a variety of applications. Significant improvements have been achieved in the areas of their preparation and further applications (e.g., in industry, agriculture, and medicine). One of these promising materials is magnesium oxide (MgO), the unique properties of which make it a suitable candidate for use in a wide range of applications. Generally, MgO is a white, hygroscopic solid mineral, and its lattice consists of Mg2+ ions and O2− ions. Nanostructured MgO can be prepared through different chemical (bottom-up approach) or physical (top-down approach) routes. The required resultant properties (e.g., bandgap, crystallite size, and shape) can be achieved depending on the reaction conditions, basic starting materials, or their concentrations. In addition to its unique material properties, MgO is also potentially of interest due to its nontoxicity and environmental friendliness, which allow it to be widely used in medicine and biotechnological applications.

Carbon coating on metal oxide materials for electrochemical energy storage

During the past decades, nano-structured metal oxide electrode materials have received growing attention due to their low development cost and high theoretical specific capacity, accordingly, quite a lot of metal oxide electrode materials are being used in electrochemical energy storage devices. However, the further development was limited by the relatively low electrical conductivity and the volume expansion during electrochemical reactions. Thus, many approaches have been proposed to obtain high-efficiency metal oxide electrode materials, such as designing nanomaterials with ideal morphology and high specific surface area, optimizing with carbon-based materials (such as graphene and glucose) to prepare nanocomposites, combining with conductive substrates to enhance the conductivity of electrodes, etc. Owning to the advantages of low cost and high chemical stability of carbon materials, core-shell structure formed by carbon-coated metal oxides is considered to be a promising solution to solve these problems. Therefore, this review mainly focuses on recent research advances in the field of carbon-coated metal oxides for energy storage, summarizing the advantages and disadvantages of common metal oxides and different types of carbon sources, and proposing methods to optimize the material properties in terms of structure and morphology, carbon layer thickness, coating method, specific surface area and pore size distribution, as well as improving electrical conductivity. In addition, the double or multi-layer coating strategy is also a reflection of the continuous development of carbon coating method. Hopefully, this rereview may provide a new direction for the renewal and development of future energy storage electrode materials.
