Classical electronic and molecular dynamics simulation for optical response of metal system

An extended molecular dynamics simulation that incorporates classical free electron dynamics in the framework of the force-field model has been developed to enable us to describe the optical response of metal materials under the visible light electric field. In the simulation, dynamical atomic point charges follow equations of motion of classical free electrons that include Coulomb interactions with the oscillating field and surrounding atomic sites and collision effects from nearby electrons and ions. This scheme allows us to simulate an interacting system of metals with molecules using an ordinary polarizable force-field and preserves energy conservation in the case without applying an external electric field. As the first applications, we show that the presented simulation accurately reproduces (i) the classical image potential in a metal-charge interaction system and (ii) the dielectric function of bulk metal. We also demonstrate (iii) calculations of absorption spectra of metal nano-particles with and without a water solvent at room temperature, showing reasonable red-shift by the solvent effect, and (iv) plasmon resonant excitation of the metal nano-particle in solution under the visible light pulse and succeeding energy relaxation of the absorbed light energy from electrons to atoms on the metal and to the water solvent. Our attempt thus opens the possibility to expand the force-field based molecular dynamics simulation to an alternative tool for optical-related fields.

Mechanical Properties of Nacre-Like Composites: A Bottom-Up Approach

Nacre is a highly organized hierarchical structure of the mineral and organic components at all scales down to the molecular-scale guided by organic molecules. The mechanical properties of the mineral component of nacre have been studied and well established for decades. In the present work, the shear modulus of the organic matrix of nacre was obtained using two of its important proteineous components, Perlucin and Lustrin A. The shear modulus value of the organic matrix was computed to be in the range of 1.25–1.45 GPa using atomistic molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Moreover, finite element (FE) simulations were conducted on the three-dimensional (3D) models of the nacre-like composite while varying the relative composition of mineral and organic constituents. The nacre-like composite models with 10–20% by volume of organic part estimated high toughness. The exact optimum value will depend on the mechanical properties of the organic matrix used in the synthesis of nacre-like material. The study is an advancement in the modeling of nacre, sheds light on macroscale properties of nacre-like composites, and opens up new avenues for continuum studies of nacre mechanics, including its mysterious toughening mechanism.

Effect of Domain Size, Boundary, and Loading Conditions on Mechanical Properties of Amorphous Silica: A Reactive Molecular Dynamics Study

Mechanical properties are very important when choosing a material for a specific application. They help to determine the range of usefulness of a material, establish the service life, and classify and identify materials. The size effect on mechanical properties has been well established numerically and experimentally. However, the role of the size effect combined with boundary and loading conditions on mechanical properties remains unknown. In this paper, by using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations with the state-of-the-art ReaxFF force field, we study mechanical properties of amorphous silica (e.g., Young's modulus, Poisson's ratio) as a function of domain size, full-/semi-periodic boundary condition, and tensile/compressive loading. We found that the domain-size effect on Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio is much more significant in semi-periodic domains compared to full-periodic domains. The results, for the first time, revealed the bimodular and anisotropic nature of amorphous silica at the atomic level. We also defined a "safe zone" regarding the domain size, where the bulk properties of amorphous silica can be reproducible, while the computational cost and accuracy are in balance.
