Aerogel Perfusion-Prepared h-BN/CNF Composite Film with Multiple Thermally Conductive Pathways and High Thermal Conductivity

Dual regulation of thermal conductivity and mechanical performance of nano cellulose-based composite via mimicking plant cell wall structure

Combining thermal conductive fillers and flexible polymers is an agile approach to fabricating composites with heat-conducting performance. However, the thermal conductivity of the composites is hard to reach an equal level to the functional fillers. The mainspring is that the thermally conductive pathways within the composite could not be well-constructed due to the air-induced interface thermal resistance. Herein, inspired by the plant cell wall structure, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) with abundant hydroxyl groups was adopted as a binder for boosting the thermally conductive pathways construction between cellulose nanofiber (CNF) and alkalized hexagonal boron nitride (BN-OH), also for strengthening the mechanical performance of the composite. The results showed that the tensile strength and through-plane thermal conductivity of the composite were high up to 91.0 MPa and 2.2 W m-1 K-1 at 40 wt% PVA content, exhibiting 121 % and 450 % enhancements compared to pure CNF film (41.2 MPa and 0.4 W m-1 K-1). Moreover, the composite also presented high thermal stability (decomposition temperature of onset was 218 °C) and good hydrophobicity properties. Overall, this study innovatively proposes an idea for enhancing the thermal conductivity and improving the mechanical properties of the composite, which is indispensable for developing thermal management materials for next-generation electronics.

Scalable Fabrication of Thermally Conductive Layered Nacre-like Self-Assembled 3D BN-Based PVA Aerogel Framework Nanocomposites

In this study, three-dimensional (3D) polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/aligned boron nitride (BN) aerogel framework nanocomposites with high performance were fabricated by a facile strategy. The boron nitride powder was initially hydrolyzed and dispersed with a chemically crosslinked plasticizer, diethyl glycol (DEG), in the PVA polymer system. The boron nitride and DEG/PVA suspensions were then mixed well with different stoichiometric ratios to attain BN/PVA nanocomposites. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that BN platelets were well dispersed and successfully aligned/oriented in one direction in the PVA matrix by using a vacuum-assisted filtration technique. The formed BN/PVA aerogel cake composite showed excellent in-plane and out-of-plane thermal conductivities of 0.76 W/mK and 0.61 W/mK with a ratio of BN/PVA of (2:1) in comparison with 0.15 W/mK for the pure PVA matrix. These high thermal conductivities of BN aerogel could be attributed to the unidirectional orientation of boron nitride nanoplatelets with the post-two days vacuum drying of the specimens at elevated temperatures. This aerogel composite is unique of its kind and displayed such high thermal conductivity of the BN/PVA framework without impregnation by any external polymer. Moreover, the composites also presented good wettability results with water and displayed high electrical resistivity of ~10¹⁴ Ω cm. These nanocomposites thus, with such exceptional characteristics, have a wide range of potential uses in packaging and electronics for thermal management applications.

Highly thermally conductive Ti3C2Tx/h-BN hybrid films via coulombic assembly for electromagnetic interference shielding

With the development of electronic equipment, heat problem and electromagnetic pollution severely affect both their functions and human health, which leads to great interests in developing materials synchronously with outstanding thermal conductivity and electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding performance. Here, ultrathin Ti₃C₂T_x/h-BN two-dimensional (2D) heterostructure films were prepared via coulombic assembly between Ti₃C₂T_x MXene and h-BN nanosheet through ultrasonic blending. After the addition of h-BN nanosheet as thermal conductive nanofillers, the hybrid films achieved a higher value of thermal conductivity, compared to Ti₃C₂T_x composite film without h-BN. The higher thermal conductivity offered by h-BN enables the Ti₃C₂T_x/h-BN films have good potential for EMI shielding applications on wearable and portable electronic devices. When the mass ratio of Ti₃C₂T_x/h-BN is 7:3, the hybrid film with the thickness of 47.60 µm exhibited electrical conductivity of 57.67 S/cm and the maximum EMI shielding effectiveness of 37.29 dB.

Advances in Studies of Boron Nitride Nanosheets and Nanocomposites for Thermal Transport and Related Applications

Hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) and exfoliated nanosheets (BNNs) not only resemble their carbon counterparts graphite and graphene nanosheets in structural configurations and many excellent materials characteristics, especially the ultra-high thermal conductivity, but also offer other unique properties such as being electrically insulating and extreme chemical stability and oxidation resistance even at elevated temperatures. In fact, BNNs as a special class of 2-D nanomaterials have been widely pursued for technological applications that are beyond the reach of their carbon counterparts. Highlighted in this article are significant recent advances in the development of more effective and efficient exfoliation techniques for high-quality BNNs, the understanding of their characteristic properties, and the use of BNNs in polymeric nanocomposites for thermally conductive yet electrically insulating materials and systems. Major challenges and opportunities for further advances in the relevant research field are also discussed.

Recent Developments in Nanocellulose-Based Aerogels in Thermal Applications: A Review

Naturally derived nanocellulose (NC) is a renewable, biodegradable nanomaterial with high strength, low density, high surface area, and tunable surface chemistry, which allows its interaction with other polymers and nanomaterials in a controlled manner. In recent years, NC aerogel has gathered a lot of attention due to environmental concerns. This review presents recent developments of NC-based aerogels and their controlled interactions with other polymers and nanomaterials for thermal applications that include electronic devices, the apparel industry, superinsulating materials, and flame-retardant smart building materials. After going through the distinctive properties of NC aerogels, they are orderly categorized and discussed as thermally insulated, thermally conductive, and flame-retardant materials.

Radio-frequency-transmitting hexagonal boron nitride-based anti- and de-icing heating system

Anti- and de-icing heating systems are used to both prevent the accumulation of ice and to remove it and thus avoid damage. Typically, anti- and de-icing heating systems employ carbon-based materials, metal frames, and bulky ceramic structures. These structures generally lead to the loss of radio-frequency (RF) signals and are also relatively heavy. Therefore, RF equipment such as radar domes (radomes) and antennas require anti- and de-icing systems with high RF transmittance for normal operation. In this work, we fabricated a fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) wave pattern covered with hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) layers (i.e., an h-BN/FTO wave pattern) on a glass substrate for use as an RF-transmitting heating system for anti- and de-icing. The FTO wave pattern and h-BN layer act as the heating element and heat spreader, respectively. The h-BN layer showed a transmittance of approximately 90% for RF waves on glass (X band: 8.2-12.4 GHz) (the 10% loss was attributable to the glass substrate). The differences in the temperatures of the FTO-patterned and non-patterned areas for the h-BN(3.6 nm)/FTO and FTO wave pattern were 19.3 and 25.5 °C, respectively. This means that the h-BN layer improved the heat-spreading performance by 6.2 °C. Furthermore, a de-icing test was performed using the h-BN(3.6 nm)/FTO wave pattern by applying a voltage of 40 V at -20 °C. The ice on the non-patterned area melted within 1 min while that on the FTO-patterned area melted within 30 s. These results suggest that the fabricated h-BN(3.6 nm)/FTO wave pattern for RF-transmitting heating systems is suitable for use with the radomes of drones, unmanned aerial vehicles, aircraft, and spaceships in extremely cold environments.

Nanocellulose Hybrids with Metal Oxides Nanoparticles for Biomedical Applications

Cellulose is one of the most affordable, sustainable and renewable resources, and has attracted much attention especially in the form of nanocellulose. Bacterial cellulose, cellulose nanocrystals or nanofibers may serve as a polymer support to enhance the effectiveness of metal nanoparticles. The resultant hybrids are valuable materials for biomedical applications due to the novel optical, electronic, magnetic and antibacterial properties. In the present review, the preparation methods, properties and application of nanocellulose hybrids with different metal oxides nanoparticles such as zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, copper oxide, magnesium oxide or magnetite are thoroughly discussed. Nanocellulose-metal oxides antibacterial formulations are preferred to antibiotics due to the lack of microbial resistance, which is the main cause for the antibiotics failure to cure infections. Metal oxide nanoparticles may be separately synthesized and added to nanocellulose (ex situ processes) or they can be synthesized using nanocellulose as a template (in situ processes). In the latter case, the precursor is trapped inside the nanocellulose network and then reduced to the metal oxide. The influence of the synthesis methods and conditions on the thermal and mechanical properties, along with the bactericidal and cytotoxicity responses of nanocellulose-metal oxides hybrids were mainly analyzed in this review. The current status of research in the field and future perspectives were also signaled.

Synergistic Effects of Boron Nitride (BN) Nanosheets and Silver (Ag) Nanoparticles on Thermal Conductivity and Electrical Properties of Epoxy Nanocomposites

Polymer composites, with both high thermal conductivity and high electrical insulation strength, are desirable for power equipment and electronic devices, to sustain increasingly high power density and heat flux. However, conventional methods to synthesize polymer composites with high thermal conductivity often degrade their insulation strength, or cause a significant increase in dielectric properties. In this work, we demonstrate epoxy nanocomposites embedded with silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), and modified boron nitride nanosheets (BNNSs), which have high thermal conductivity, high insulation strength, low permittivity, and low dielectric loss. Compared with neat epoxy, the composite with 25 vol% of binary nanofillers has a significant enhancement (~10x) in thermal conductivity, which is twice of that filled with BNNSs only (~5x), owing to the continuous heat transfer path among BNNSs enabled by AgNPs. An increase in the breakdown voltage is observed, which is attributed to BNNSs-restricted formation of AgNPs conducting channels that result in a lengthening of the breakdown path. Moreover, the effects of nanofillers on dielectric properties, and thermal simulated current of nanocomposites, are discussed.

Design of Heat-Conductive hBN-PMMA Composites by Electrostatic Nano-Assembly

Micro/nanoscale design of composite materials enables alteration of their properties for advanced functional materials. One of the biggest challenges in material design is the controlled decoration of composite materials with the desired functional additives. This study reports on and demonstrates the homogeneous decoration of hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) on poly(methylmethacrylate) (PMMA) and vice versa. The formation of the composite materials was conducted via a low environmental load and a low-energy-consuming, electrostatic nano-assembly method which also enabled the efficient usage of nano-sized additives. The hBN/PMMA and PMMA/hBN composites were fabricated in various size combinations that exhibited percolated and layer-oriented structures, respectively. The thermal conductivity behaviors of hBN/PMMA and PMMA/hBN composites that exhibited good microstructure were compared. The results showed that microstructural design of the composites enabled the modification of their heat-conducting property. This novel work demonstrated the feasibility of fabricating heat-conductive PMMA matrix composites with controlled decoration of hBN sheets, which may provide a platform for further development of heat-conductive polymeric materials.

Anisotropic Thermally Conductive Perfluoroalkoxy Composite with Low Dielectric Constant Fabricated by Aligning Boron Nitride Nanosheets via Hot Pressing

Thermal management has become a critical challenge in electronics and portable devices. To address this issue, polymer composites with high thermal conductivity (TC) and low dielectric property are urgently needed. In this work, we fabricated perfluoroalkoxy (PFA) composite with high anisotropic TC and low dielectric constant by aligning boron nitride nanosheets (BNNs) via hot pressing. We characterized the thermal stability, microstructure, in-plane and through-plane TCs, heat dissipation capability, and dielectric property of the composites. The results indicate that the BNNs–PFA composites possessed good thermal stability. When the BNNs content was higher than 10 wt %, the BNNs were well layer aligned in the PFA matrix, and the composites showed obvious anisotropic TC. The in-plane TC and through-plane TCs of 30 wt % BNNs–PFA composite were 4.65 and 1.94 W m⁻¹ K⁻¹, respectively. By using the composite in thermal management of high-power LED, we found that alignment of BNNs in composite significantly improves the heat dissipation capability of composite. In addition, the composites exhibited a low dielectric property. This study shows that hot pressing is a facile and low-cost method to fabricate bulk composite with anisotropic TC, which has wide applications in electronic packaging.

Graphene-Perfluoroalkoxy Nanocomposite with High Through-Plane Thermal Conductivity Fabricated by Hot-Pressing

With the rapid development of electronics and portable devices, polymer nanocomposites with high through-plane thermal conductivity (TC) are urgently needed. In this work, we fabricated graphene nanosheets-perfluoroalkoxy (GNs-PFA) composite sheets with high through-plane TCs via hot-pressing followed by mechanical machining. When the GNs content exceeded 10 wt%, GNs were vertically aligned in the PFA matrix, and the through-plane TCs of nanocomposites were 10-15 times higher than their in-plane TCs. In particular, the composite with 30 wt% GNs exhibited a through-plane TC of 25.57 W/(m·K), which was 9700% higher than that of pure PFA. The composite with 30 wt% GNs was attached to the surface of a high-power light-emitting diode (LED) to assess its heat-dissipation capability. The composite with vertically aligned GNs lowered the LED surface temperature by approximately 16 °C compared with pure PFA. Our facile, low-cost method allows for the large-scale production of GNs-PFA nanocomposites with high through-plane TCs, which can be used in various thermal-management applications.
