Simple and Inexpensive Fabrication of High Surface-Area Paper-Based Gold Electrodes for Electrochemical and Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering Sensing

Paper has emerged as an excellent alternative to create environmentally benign disposable electrochemical sensing devices. The critical step to fabricating electrochemical sensors is making paper conductive. In this work, paper-based electrodes with a high electroactive surface area (ESA) were fabricated using a simple electroless deposition technique. The polymerization time of a polydopamine adhesion layer and the gold salt concentration during the electroless deposition step were optimized to obtain uniformly conductive paper-based electrodes. The optimization of these fabrication parameters was key to obtaining the highest ESA possible. Roughening factors (Rf) of 7.2 and 2.3 were obtained when cyclic voltammetry was done in sulfuric acid and potassium ferricyanide, respectively, demonstrating a surface prone to fast electron transfer. As a proof of concept, mercury detection was done through anodic stripping, achieving a limit of quantification (LOQ) of 0.9 ppb. By changing the metal deposition conditions, the roughness of the metalized papers could also be tuned for their use as surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) sensors. Metallized papers with the highest SERS signal for thiophenol detection yielded a LOQ of 10 ppb. We anticipate that this method of fabricating nanostructured paper-based electrodes can accelerate the development of simple, cost-effective, and highly sensitive electrochemical and SERS sensing platforms.

Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy: Applications in Agriculture and Food Safety

Recent global warming has resulted in shifting of weather patterns and led to intensification of natural disasters and upsurges in pests and diseases. As a result, global food systems are under pressure and need adjustments to meet the change—often by pesticides. Unfortunately, such agrochemicals are harmful for humans and the environment, and consequently need to be monitored. Traditional detection methods currently used are time consuming in terms of sample preparation, are high cost, and devices are typically not portable. Recently, Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) has emerged as an attractive candidate for rapid, high sensitivity and high selectivity detection of contaminants relevant to the food industry and environmental monitoring. In this review, the principles of SERS as well as recent SERS substrate fabrication methods are first discussed. Following this, their development and applications for agrifood safety is reviewed, with focus on detection of dye molecules, melamine in food products, and the detection of different classes of pesticides such as organophosphate and neonicotinoids.

Direct-write microsphere photolithography of hierarchical infrared metasurfaces

A direct-write configuration of microsphere photolithography (MPL) is investigated for the patterning of IR metasurfaces at large scales. MPL uses a self-assembled hexagonal close-packed array of microspheres as an optical element to generate photonic nanojets within a photoresist layer. The photonic jets can be positioned within the microsphere-defined unit cells by controlling the illumination's angle of incidence (AOI). This allows the definition of complex antenna elements. A digital micromirror device is used to provide spatial modulation across the microsphere arrays and coordinated with a set of stages providing AOI control. This provides hierarchical patterning at the sub- and super-unit cell levels and is suitable for a range of metasurfaces. The constraints of this approach are analyzed and demonstrated with a polarization-dependent infrared perfect absorber/emitter, which agrees well with modeling.

Latest Novelties on Plasmonic and Non-Plasmonic Nanomaterials for SERS Sensing

An explosion in the production of substrates for surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) has occurred using novel designs of plasmonic nanostructures (e.g., nanoparticle self-assembly), new plasmonic materials such as bimetallic nanomaterials (e.g., Au/Ag) and hybrid nanomaterials (e.g., metal/semiconductor), and new non-plasmonic nanomaterials. The novel plasmonic nanomaterials can enable a better charge transfer or a better confinement of the electric field inducing a SERS enhancement by adjusting, for instance, the size, shape, spatial organization, nanoparticle self-assembly, and nature of nanomaterials. The new non-plasmonic nanomaterials can favor a better charge transfer caused by atom defects, thus inducing a SERS enhancement. In last two years (2019-2020), great insights in the fields of design of plasmonic nanosystems based on the nanoparticle self-assembly and new plasmonic and non-plasmonic nanomaterials were realized. This mini-review is focused on the nanoparticle self-assembly, bimetallic nanoparticles, nanomaterials based on metal-zinc oxide, and other nanomaterials based on metal oxides and metal oxide-metal for SERS sensing.

Applications of Symmetry Breaking in Plasmonics

Plasmonics is one of the most used domains for applications to optical devices, biological and chemical sensing, and non-linear optics, for instance. Indeed, plasmonics enables confining the electromagnetic field at the nanoscale. The resonances of plasmonic systems can be set in a given domain of a spectrum by adjusting the geometry, the spatial arrangement, and the nature of the materials. Moreover, symmetry breaking can be used for the further improvement of the optical properties of the plasmonic systems. In the last three years, great advances in or insights into the use of symmetry breaking in plasmonics have occurred. In this mini-review, we present recent insights and advances on the use of symmetry breaking in plasmonics for applications to chemistry, sensing, devices, non-linear optics, and chirality.
