Abstract
BACKGROUND Hesperidin, a flavanone commonly found in citrus fruits and herbal formulations, has emerged as a potential new therapeutic agent for modulating several diseases. Since pre-eclampsia is a growing public health threat, it may negatively impact the economy and increase the disease burden of South Africa. Phytocompounds are easily accessible, demonstrate minimal side effects, and may confer novel medicinal options as a treatment and preventive preference. OBJECTIVE To investigate the physiological, biochemical, and hematological outcomes of hesperidin in an arginine vasopressin (AVP)-induced rodent model of pre-eclampsia. METHODS Female Sprague-Dawley rats were surgically implanted with mini-osmotic pumps to deliver AVP (200 ng/h) subcutaneously. Animals were treated with hesperidin at 200 mg/kg.b.w via oral gavage for 14 days. Systolic and diastolic blood pressures were measured on GD 7, 14, and 18 using a non-invasive tail-cuff method and were euthanized on GD 21. RESULTS The findings showed that hesperidin administration significantly decreased blood pressure (P < 0.05) and urinary protein levels in pregnant rats (P < 0.001). Placental and individual pup weight also increased significantly in the pregnant hesperidin-treated groups compared to AVP untreated groups (P < 0.001). Biochemical and hematological markers such as white blood cell count and lymphocyte levels differed significantly (P < 0.05) in AVP groups treated with and without hesperidin. CONCLUSION Our results suggest that hesperidin is an antihypertensive agent with modes of action associated with its diuretic and blood pressure lowering effects and reduction of proteinuria in AVP-induced pre-eclamptic rats.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Preeclampsia is a life-threatening disease of pregnancy that lacks effective pharmaceuticals which can target its pathogenesis. Since preeclampsia involves complex pathological processes, including autophagy, this study aims to explore autophagy-related mechanisms of preeclampsia and to screen potential drugs. METHODS Firstly, the datasets GSE75010, GSE24129, GSE66273, and autophagic genes lists were downloaded from public databases. Then, a weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) was applied to filter autophagic-related hub genes of preeclampsia. The differential expression levels of the hub genes were validated with datasets GSE24129 and GSE66273. Next, the GO and KEGG enrichment, protein-protein interacting (PPI) network, as well as the downstream pathways was analyzed via the starBase, STRING and Cytoscape to determine the functions and regulatory network of the hub genes. Additionally, the immune microenvironment of preeclampsia was investigated by the CIBERSORTX database. Finally, three herb ingredients, berberine, baicalein, and luteolin were screened by molecular docking in comparison to pravastatin, metformin, and aspirin, to predict potential drugs for treating preeclampsia. RESULTS A total of 54 autophagy-related genes were filtered by WGCNA. After filtering with |GS| > 0.5 and |MM| > 0.8, three hub genes, namely PKM, LEP, and HK2, were identified and validated. Among these genes, PKM and LEP were overexpressed in women older than 35 years old ( p<0.05; p<0.05); the expression of PKM, LEP, and HK2 differed remarkably in women with different BMI (all p<0.05); PKM overexpressed in women with hypertension (p<0.05). The regulatory network of hub genes demonstrated that they were mainly enriched in metabolic pathways, including the AMPK signaling pathway, glucagon signaling pathway, adipocytokine signaling pathway, and central carbon metabolism. Then, immune microenvironment analysis turned out that M2 macrophages were reduced in preeclampsia women (p<0.0001) and were negatively correlated with the expression of PKM (r=-0.2, p<0.05), LEP (r=-0.4, p<0.0001), and HK2 (r=-0.3, p<0.001). Lastly, molecular docking showed baicalein and luteolin could bind intimately to hub genes. CONCLUSION PKM, LEP, and HK2 could be promising biomarkers for preeclampsia, which might regulate the pathogenesis of preeclampsia via metabolism pathways and immune microenvironment. Baicalein and luteolin could be potential therapeutics for preeclampsia.

Abstract
The açaí palm (Euterpe oleracea Mart.), a species belonging to the Arecaceae family, has been cultivated for thousands of years in tropical Central and South America as a multipurpose dietary plant. The recent introduction of açaí fruit and its nutritional and healing qualities to regions outside its origin has rapidly expanded global demand for açaí berry. The health-promoting and disease-preventing properties of this plant are attributed to numerous bioactive phenolic compounds present in the leaf, pulp, fruit, skin, and seeds. The purpose of this review is to present an up-to-date, comprehensive, and critical evaluation of the health benefits of açaí and its phytochemicals with a special focus on cellular and molecular mechanisms of action. In vitro and in vivo studies showed that açaí possesses antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and exerts cardioprotective, gastroprotective, hepatoprotective, neuroprotective, renoprotective, antilipidemic, antidiabetic, and antineoplastic activities. Moreover, clinical trials have suggested that açaí can protect against metabolic stress induced by oxidation, inflammation, vascular abnormalities, and physical exertion. Due to its medicinal properties and the absence of undesirable effects, açaí shows a promising future in health promotion and disease prevention, in addition to a vast economic potential in the food and cosmetic industries.

Abstract
Thyme vulgaris is effective in treating acetaminophen toxicity in clinical trials. The present study investigates Thyme aqueous extract's effect on rats poisoned with Acetaminophen. In this study, the data were obtained from male Wister rats. Animals were divided into three groups: distilled water, acetaminophen (1mg/ kg), and aqueous thyme extract (400 mg/kg). All animals were orally treated for seven days respectively. The animal was sacrificed on the eighth day. ALT, AST, GSH, TAC, and Caspase3 were all measured in plasma obtained from heart-derived blood samples centrifuged to determine plasma levels of these enzymes and other antioxidants, malondialdehyde precursors (MDA). Liver enzyme levels were reduced, total antioxidant levels were increased, and an aqueous extract of thyme compensated for glutathione levels. Caspase3 levels were also reduced. Acetaminophen-induced liver tissue damage and inflammatory cell damage were considerably lessened by Aqueous Thyme extract treatment. To protect the liver from Acetaminophen-induced hepatotoxicity, aqueous Thyme extract was found to be beneficial.

Abstract
Polyphenols are a group of phytochemicals with extensive biological functions and health-promoting potential. These compounds are present in most foods of plant origin and their increased widespread availability through the intake of nutritional supplements, fortified foods, and beverages, has also led to increased exposure throughout gestation. In this narrative review, we focus on the role of polyphenols in both healthy and pathological pregnancy. General information related to their classification and function is followed by an overview of their known effects in early-pregnancy events, including the current insights into molecular mechanisms involved. Further, we provide an overview of their involvement in some of the most common pregnancy-associated pathological conditions, such as preeclampsia and gestational diabetes mellitus. Additionally, we also discuss the estimated possible risk of polyphenol consumption on pregnancy outcomes. The consumption of dietary polyphenols during pregnancy needs particular attention considering the possible effects of polyphenols on the mechanisms involved in maternal adaptation and fetal development. Further studies are strongly needed to unravel the in vivo effects of polyphenol metabolites during pregnancy, as well as their role on advanced maternal age, prenatal nutrition, and metabolic risk of the offspring.

Abstract
The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of baicalein or Scutellaria baicalensis root extract interaction with methyldopa in pregnant spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) at the pharmacodynamic, molecular, and biochemical levels. The rats, after confirming pregnancy, received baicalein (200 mg/kg/day, p.o.) and extract (1000 mg/kg/day, p.o.), in combination with methyldopa (400 mg/kg/day; p.o.), for 14 consecutive days, 1 h before blood pressure and heart rate measurements. In the heart and placenta from mothers after giving birth to their offspring, mRNA expression of factors related to inflammatory processes (TNF-α, Il-1β, IL-6) and vascular diseases (TGF-β, HIF-1α, VEGF, PlGF) was measured. Levels of markers of oxidative stress (superoxide dismutase and malondialdehyde) in the placenta and indicators of myocardial damage (troponin cTnC and cTnI, creatine kinase, myoglobin, and lactate dehydrogenase) in the heart were also assessed. Baicalein co-administered with methyldopa was associated with reduced blood pressure, especially during the first three days. The interactions were more pronounced for such factors as TGF-β, HIF-1α, VEGF, and PlGF than TNF-α, Il-1β, and IL-6. Combined application of baicalein and extract with methyldopa may be of value in the development of a new antihypertensive medication intended for patients suffering from preeclampsia or pregnancy-induced hypertension.

Abstract
Research studies about the effect of environmental agents on the accumulation of phenolic compounds in medicinal plants are required to establish a set of optimal growth conditions. Hence, in this work, we considered the impact of habitat types, soil composition, climatic factors, and altitude on the content of phenolics in Mentha species [M. pulegium L. (MP), M. rotundifolia (L.) Huds. (MR), and M. spicata L. (MS)] grown in different regions of Algeria. The phenolic contents and antioxidant activities were analyzed using spectrophotometric and HPTLC methods. The harvesting localities differ by their altitudes and climates, but their soils are quite similar, characterized by slight alkalinity, moderate humidity, no-salinity, and high levels in organic matter. Both the contents in total phenolics (TPC), total flavonoids (TFC), and rosmarinic acid (RAC), and the antioxidant activities of Mentha samples collected from these Algerian localities are affected by the geographical regions of origin. The samples of MS and MP from the Khemis-Miliana region showed the highest concentration in TPC (MS, 7853 ± 265 mg GAE/100 g DW; MP, 5250 ± 191 mg GAE/100 g DW), while in Chemini, the MR samples were the richest in these compounds (MR, 3568 ± 195 mg GAE/100 g DW). Otherwise, the MP (from Tichy), MR (from Tajboudjth), and MS (from Khemis-Miliana) specimens exhibited the highest levels of TFC and RAC. The antioxidant levels in a total activity test (reduction of phosphomolybdate) appear correlated with the total phenolic contents, but this was not the case for most of the important ROS-scavenging and iron-chelating capacities for which the quality of polyphenols is probably more important than their amounts. A principal component analysis (PCA) score plot indicates that all of the Mentha samples can be divided into four groups. These discriminated groups appear comparatively similar in phenolic contents and antioxidant activities. As for the harvest localities, the Mentha samples were divided into four groups in which the phenolic contents and antioxidant activities were comparatively equivalent.

Abstract
Pre-eclampsia (PE), a pregnancy complication, affects 3-5% of all pregnancies worldwide and is the main cause of maternal and perinatal morbidity. However, there is no drug which can clearly slow this disease progression. Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), a natural compound extracted from green tea, has been found to enhance the treatment efficacy of oral nifedipine against pregnancy-induced severe PE. This study aims to clarify the potential targets and pharmacological mechanisms of EGCG in treatment of PE. We used Traditional Chinese Medicine Systems Pharmacology database and Gene Cards database to obtain 179 putative target proteins of EGCG, 550 PE-related hub genes and 39 intersecting targets between EGCG and PE. By using Gene Ontology and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathway enrichment analyses, we got the gene entries and enrichment pathways closely related to the intersecting targets. The top 10 enrichment pathways were pathway in cancer, proteoglycans in cancer, HIF-1 signaling pathway, AGE-RAGE signaling pathway in diabetic complications, TNF signaling pathway, bladder cancer, hepatitis B, IL-17 signaling pathway, toxoplasmosis, PI3K-Akt signaling pathway. Furthermore, compound-target-pathway (CTP) and protein-protein interaction (PPI) network analysis were employed to explore the interaction of the top twelve targets for EGCG in treating PE. Molecular docking analysis showed combinations between these targets and EGCG, and the interaction between EGCG and the targets IL-6 and EGFR was confirmed by using molecular dynamic simulation. In conclusion, these findings hint the underlying mechanism of EGCG in the treatment of PE and point out directions in further studies on PE.

Abstract
Cardoon (Cynara cardunculus L.) is a Mediterranean plant and member of the Asteraceae family that includes three botanical taxa, the wild perennial cardoon (C. cardunculus L. var. sylvestris (Lamk) Fiori), globe artichoke (C. cardunculus L. var. scolymus L. Fiori), and domesticated cardoon (C. cardunculus L. var. altilis DC.). Cardoon has been widely used in the Mediterranean diet and folk medicine since ancient times. Today, cardoon is recognized as a plant with great industrial potential and is considered as a functional food, with important nutritional value, being an interesting source of bioactive compounds, such as phenolics, minerals, inulin, fiber, and sesquiterpene lactones. These bioactive compounds have been vastly described in the literature, exhibiting a wide range of beneficial effects, such as antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, antioxidant, lipid-lowering, cytotoxic, antidiabetic, antihemorrhoidal, cardiotonic, and choleretic activity. In this review, an overview of the cardoon nutritional and phytochemical composition, as well as its biological potential, is provided, highlighting the main therapeutic effects of the different parts of the cardoon plant on metabolic disorders, specifically associated with hepatoprotective, hypolipidemic, and antidiabetic activity.

Abstract
Pre-eclampsia is a severe pregnant complication, mainly characterized by insufficient trophoblast invasion, impaired uterine spiral artery remodeling, placental hypoxia and ischemia, and endothelial dysfunction. However, the potential mechanisms of pre-eclampsia remain unclear. SIRT1 is a NAD+-dependent deacetylase, involving in multiple biological processes, including energy metabolism, oxidative stress, inflammatory response, and cellular autophagy. Several studies showed that SIRT1 might play a vital role in the pathogenesis of pre-eclampsia. In this review, we aim to integrate the latest research on SIRT1 and pre-eclampsia to explore the comprehensive mechanisms of SIRT1 in pre-eclampsia. More specifically, SIRT1 might affect placental development and trophoblast invasion through autophagy and senescence in pre-eclampsia, and SIRT1 protects vascular endothelial cells from oxidative stress, inflammatory response, autophagy, and senescence. Furthermore, SIRT1 deficiency mice showed typical pre-eclampsia-like performances, which can be reversed via direct SIRT1 supplement or SIRT1 agonist treatment. Additionally, resveratrol, a SIRT1 agonist, attenuates vascular endothelial injury and placental dysfunction, and exerts protective effect on decreasing blood pressure. In this review, we provide new insights into the development of pre-eclampsia, which can establish a theoretical basis for prevention and treatment for pre-eclampsia. Besides, we also propose questions that still need to be further addressed in order to elucidate the comprehensive molecular mechanisms of pre-eclampsia in the future.

Abstract
For the first time in the Polish population, we aimed to investigate associations between the VDR gene single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) BsmI (rs15444410), ApaI (rs7975232), FokI (rs19735810), and TaqI (rs731236) and the development of preeclampsia (PE). A case-control study surveyed 122 preeclamptic and 184 normotensive pregnant women. The polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) method was performed to examine the maternal VDR FokI, BsmI, TaqI, and ApaI polymorphisms. The VDR BsmIAA homozygous genotype was statistically significantly more frequent in preeclamptic women compared to the control group (p = 0.0263), which was also associated with a 2-fold increased risk of PE (OR = 2.06, p = 0.012). A correlation between the VDR BsmI polymorphism with systolic and diastolic blood hypertension was noted. Furthermore, 3-marker haplotype CTA (TaqI/ApaI/BsmI) was associated with significantly higher systolic (p = 0.0075) and diastolic (p = 0.0072) blood pressure. Association and haplotype analysis indicated that the VDR BsmI A allele could play a significant role in the PE pathomechanism and hence could be a risk factor for PE development in pregnant Polish women. These results indicate the importance of the VDR BsmI polymorphism and reveal that this variant is closely associated with a higher predisposition to hypertension.

Abstract
In recent years, the consumption of natural-based foods, including beans, fruits, legumes, nuts, oils, vegetables, spices, and whole grains, has been encouraged. This fact is essentially due to their content in bioactive phytochemicals, with the phenolic compounds standing out. Among them, anthocyanins have been a target of many studies due to the presence of catechol, pyrogallol, and methoxy groups in their chemical structure, which confer notable scavenging, anti-apoptotic, and anti-inflammatory activities, being already recommended as supplementation to mitigate or even attenuate certain disorders, such as diabetes, cancer, and cardiovascular and neurological pathologies. The most well-known anthocyanins are cyanidin 3-O-glucoside and cyanidin 3-O-rutinoside. They are widespread in nature, being present in considerable amounts in red fruits and red vegetables. Overall, the present review intends to discuss the most recent findings on the potential health benefits from the daily intake of anthocyanin-rich foods, as well as their possible pharmacological mechanisms of action. However, before that, some emphasis regarding their chemical structure, dietary sources, and bioavailability was done.
