Abstract
Natural and synthetic biodegradable polymers are widely used to obtain more sustainable films with biological, physicochemical, and mechanical properties for biomedical purposes. The incorporation of essential oils (EOs) in polymeric films can optimize the biological activities of these EOs, protect them from degradation, and serve as a prototype for new biotechnological products. This article aims to discuss updates over the last 10 years on incorporating EOs into natural and synthetic biodegradable polymer films for biomedical applications. Chitosan, alginates, cellulose, and proteins such as gelatine, silk, and zein are among the natural polymers most commonly used to prepare biodegradable films for release EOs. In addition to these, the most cited synthetic biodegradable polymers are poly(L-lactide) (PLA), poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), and poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL). The EOs of clove, cinnamon, tea tree, eucalyptus, frankincense, lavender, thyme and oregano incorporated into polymeric films have been the most studied EOs in recent years in the biomedical field. Biomedical applications include antimicrobial activity against pathogenic bacteria and fungi, anticancer activity, potential for tissue engineering and regeneration with scaffolds and wound healing as dressings. Thus, this article reports on the importance of incorporating EOs into biodegradable polymer films, making these systems especially attractive for various biomedical applications.

Abstract
Combating antimicrobial resistance is one of the biggest health challenges because of the ineffectiveness of standard biocide treatments. This challenge could be approached using natural products, which have demonstrated powerful therapeutics against multidrug-resistant microbes. In the present work, a nanodevice consisting of mesoporous silica nanoparticles loaded with an essential oil component (cinnamaldehyde) and functionalized with the polypeptide ε-poly-l-lysine is developed and used as an antimicrobial agent. In the presence of the corresponding stimuli (i.e., exogenous proteolytic enzymes from bacteria or fungi), the polypeptide is hydrolyzed, and the cinnamaldehyde delivery is enhanced. The nanodevice's release mechanism and efficacy are evaluated in vitro against the pathogenic microorganisms Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Candida albicans. The results demonstrate that the new device increases the delivery of the cinnamaldehyde via a biocontrolled uncapping mechanism triggered by proteolytic enzymes. Moreover, the nanodevice notably improves the antimicrobial efficacy of cinnamaldehyde when compared to the free compound, ca. 52-fold for E. coli, ca. 60-fold for S. aureus, and ca. 7-fold for C. albicans. The enhancement of the antimicrobial activity of the essential oil component is attributed to the decrease of its volatility due to its encapsulation in the porous silica matrix and the increase of its local concentration when released due to the presence of microorganisms.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the effect of cinnamon essential oil (CEO)-loaded metal-organic frameworks (CEO@MOF) on the properties of gelatin/pullulan (Gel/Pull)-based composite films (Gel/Pull-based films). The incorporation of CEO@MOF into Gel/Pull-based films demonstrated significant antimicrobial activity against S. aureus, S. enterica, E. coli, and L. monocytogenes. Additionally, CEO@MOF integrated film exhibited a 98.16 % ABTS radical scavenging, with no significant change in the mechanical properties of the neat Gel/Pull film. The UV blocking efficiency of the composite films increased significantly from 81.38 to 99.56 % at 280 nm with the addition of 3 wt% CEO@MOF. Additionally, Gel/Pull/CEO@MOF films effectively extended the shelf life of meat preserved at 4 °C by reducing moisture loss by 3.35 %, maintaining the pH within the threshold limit (6.2), and inhibiting bacterial growth by 99.9 %. These results propose that CEO@MOF has significant potential as an effective additive in active packaging to improve shelf life and food safety.

Abstract
Essential oils have become increasingly popular in fields of medical, food and agriculture, owing to their strongly antimicrobial, anti-inflammation and antioxidant effects, greatly meeting demand from consumers for healthy and safe natural products. However, the easy volatility and/or chemical instability of active ingredients of essential oils (EAIs) can result in the loss of activity before realizing their functions, which have greatly hindered the widely applications of EAIs. As an emerging trend, micro/mesoporous nanomaterials (MNs) have drawn great attention for encapsulation and controlled release of EAIs, owing to their tunable pore structural characteristics. In this review, we briefly discuss the recent advances of MNs that widely used in the controlled release of EAIs, including zeolites, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), mesoporous silica nanomaterials (MSNs), and provide a comprehensive summary focusing on the pore engineering strategies of MNs that affect their controlled-release or triggered-release for EAIs, including tailorable pore structure properties (e.g., pore size, pore surface area, pore volume, pore geometry, and framework compositions) and surface properties (surface modification and surface functionalization). Finally, the variegated applications and potential challenges are also given for MNs based delivery strategies for EAIs in the fields of healthcare, food and agriculture. These will provide considerable instructions for the rational design of MNs for controlled release of EAIs.

Abstract
The formation of pathogenic biofilms on medical devices is a major public health concern accounting for over 65% of healthcare-associated infections and causing high infection morbidity, mortality, and a great burden to patients and the healthcare system due to its resistance to treatment. In this study, we developed a chitosan-based antimicrobial coating with embedded mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) to load and deliver eugenol, an essential oil component, to inhibit the biofilm formation of common bacteria in medical-device-related infections. The eugenol-loaded MSNs were dispersed in a chitosan solution, which was then cross-linked with glutaraldehyde and drop-casted to obtain coatings. The MSNs and coatings were characterized by dynamic light scattering, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller analysis, attenuated-total-reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, 3D optical profilometry, and scanning electron microscopy. The release behavior of eugenol-loaded MSNs and coatings and the antibiofilm and antimicrobial activity of the coatings against adherent Staphylococcus aureus, methicillin-resistant S. aureus, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa were investigated. Eugenol was released from the MSNs and coatings in aqueous conditions in a controlled manner with an initial low release, followed by a peak release, a decrease, and a plateau. While the chitosan coatings alone or with unloaded MSNs demonstrated limited antimicrobial effects and still supported biofilm formation after 24 h, the coating containing eugenol not only reduced biofilm formation but also killed the majority of the attached bacteria. It also showed biocompatibility in indirect contact with NIH/3T3 fibroblasts and a high percentage of live cells in direct contact. However, further investigations into cell proliferation in direct contact are recommended. The findings indicated that the chitosan-based coating with eugenol-loaded MSNs could be developed into an effective strategy to inhibit biofilm formation on medical devices.

Abstract
Food safety threats and deterioration due to the invasion of microorganisms has led to economic losses and food-borne diseases in the food industry; so, development of natural food preservatives is urgently needed when considering the safety of chemically synthesized preservatives. Because of its outstanding antioxidant and antibacterial properties, cinnamon essential oil (CEO) is considered a promising natural preservative. However, CEO's low solubility and easy degradability limits its application in food products. Therefore, some encapsulation and delivery systems have been developed to improve CEO efficiency in food preservation applications. This work discusses the chemical and techno-functional properties of CEO, including its key components and antioxidant/antibacterial properties, and summarizes recent developments on encapsulation and delivery systems for CEO in food preservation applications. Since CEO is currently added to most biopolymeric films/coatings (BFCs) for food preservation, most studies have shown that encapsulation systems can improve the food preservation performance of BFCs containing CEOs. It has been confirmed that various delivery systems could improve the stability and controlled-release properties of CEO, thereby enhancing its ability to extend the shelf life of foods. These encapsulation techniques include spray drying, emulsion systems, complex coacervation (nanoprecipitation), ionic gelation, liposomes, inclusion complexation (cyclodextrins, silica), and electrospinning.

Abstract
Non-biodegradability and disposal problems are the major challenges associated with synthetic plastic packaging. This review article discusses a new generation of biodegradable active and smart packaging based on porous nanomaterials (PNMs), which maintains the quality and freshness of food products while meeting biodegradability requirements. PNMs have recently gained significant attention in the field of food packaging due to their large surface area, peculiar structures, functional flexibility, and thermal stability. We present for the first time the recently published literature on the incorporation of various PNMs into renewable materials to develop advanced, environmentally friendly, and high-quality packaging technology. Various emerging packaging technologies are discussed in this review, along with their advantages and disadvantages. Moreover, it provides general information about PNMs, their characterization, and fabrication methods. It also briefly describes the effects of different PNMs on the functionality of biopolymeric films. Furthermore, we examined how smart packaging loaded with PNMs can improve food shelf life and reduce food waste. The results indicate that PNMs play a critical role in improving the antimicrobial, thermal, physicochemical, and mechanical properties of natural packaging materials. These tailor-made materials can simultaneously extend the shelf life of food while reducing plastic usage and food waste.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Berberine (BBR) possesses a wide variety of pharmacological activities. However, the oral bioavailability of BBR is low due to extensive intestinal first-pass metabolism by cytochrome P450s (CYPs), insufficient absorption due to low solubility and P-glycoprotein (P-gp)-mediated efflux transport, and hepatic first-pass metabolism in rats. AREAS COVERED Various dosage formulations were developed to increase the oral bioavailability of BBR by overcoming the reducing factors. This article provides the developing strategy of oral dosage formulations of BBR based on the physicochemical (low solubility, formation of salts/ion-pair complex) and pharmacokinetic properties (substrate of P-gp/CYPs, extensive intestinal first-pass metabolism). Literature was searched by using PubMed. EXPERT OPINION Here, formulations increasing the dissolution rates/solubility; formulations containing a P-gp inhibitor; formulations containing solubilizer exhibiting P-gp and/or CYPs inhibitors; formulations containing absorption enhancers; gastro/duodenal retentive formulations; lipid-based formulations; formulations targeting lymphatic transport; and physicochemical modifications increasing lipophilicity were reviewed. Among these formulations, formulations that can reduce intestinal first-pass metabolisms such as formulations containing CYPs inhibitor(s) and formulations containing absorption enhancer(s) significantly increased the oral bioavailability of BBR. Further studies on other dosing routes that can avoid first-pass metabolism such as the rectal route would also be important to increase the bioavailability of BBR.

Abstract
Ethanol and starch are the main products generated after the processing of corn via dry grinding and wet milling, respectively. Milling generates byproducts including stover, condensed distillers’ solubles, gluten meal, and the dried distillers’ grains with solubles (DDGS), which are sources of valuable compounds for industry including lignin, oil, protein, carotenoids, and phenolic compounds. This manuscript reviews the current research scenario on the valorization of corn milling byproducts with supercritical technology, as well as the processing strategies and the challenges of reaching economic feasibility. The main products recently studied were biodiesel, biogas, microcapsules, and extracts of enriched nutrients. The pretreatment of solid byproducts for further hydrolysis to produce sugar oligomers and bioactive peptides is another recent strategy offered by supercritical technology to process corn milling byproducts. The patents invented to transform corn milling byproducts include oil fractionation, extraction of undesirable flavors, and synthesis of structured lipids and fermentable sugars. Process intensification via the integration of milling with equipment that operates with supercritical fluids was suggested to reduce processing costs and to generate novel products.

Abstract
Mango is one of the most important, medicinal tropical plants in the world from an economic point of view due to the presence of effective bioactive substances as co-products in its leaves. The aim of this work was to enhance the impregnation of natural antioxidants from mango leaves into a porous ceramic matrix. The effects of pressure, temperature, impregnation time, concentration of the extract and different porous silica on impregnation of phenolic compounds and antioxidant activity were analyzed. The volume of the pressurized fluid extract and amount of porous ceramic matrix remained constant. The best impregnation conditions were obtained at 6 h, 300 bar, 60 mg/mL, 35 °C and with MSU-H porous silica. The results indicated that increasing the pressure, concentration of the extract and temperature during impregnation with phenolic compounds such as gallic acid and iriflophenone 3-C (2-O-p-hydroxybenzolyl)-β-D-glucoside increased the antioxidant activity and the amount of total phenols.

Abstract
Although the use of synthetic chemicals is the principal method for insect pest management, their widespread application has led to numerous side effects, including environmental pollution and threats to human and animal health. Plant essential oils have been introduced as promising natural substitutes for synthetic insecticides. However, high volatility and/or low durability are the main limiting factors for essential oil application for control of insect pests. Accordingly, along with an evaluation of the fumigant toxicity of Eucalyptus largiflorens essential oil against the cowpea weevil, Callosobruchus maculatus, essential oil was nanoencapsulated by two mesoporous silicates, MCM-41 and zeolite 3A, to enhance fumigant persistence and toxicity. The chemical profile of essential oil was also analyzed through gas chromatographic-mass spectrometry. E. largiflorens essential oil showed significant concentration-dependent toxicity against insect pests; a concentration of 5.16 μL/L resulted in 100% mortality after 48 h. The toxicity of essential oil could be attributed to the presence of various insecticidal terpenes, such as spathulenol (15.6%), cryptone (7.0%), and 1,8-cineole (5.8%). Fumigant persistence was increased from 6 days to 19 and 17 days for pure and capsulated essential oil with MCM-41 and Zeolite 3A, respectively. The insect mortality also increased from 99 insects in pure essential oil to 178 and 180 insects in MCM-41 and Zeolite 3A encapsulated formulations, respectively. Therefore, the encapsulation of E. largiflorens essential oil by MCM- 41 and Zeolite 3A is a beneficial method for enhancing its persistence and toxicity against C. maculatus.

Abstract
Some citrus by-products such as orange peel contains valuable compounds that could be recovered and restored into the food chain. In this study, an efficient valorization of orange peel has been investigated using green extraction, fractionation, and impregnation techniques. The first step included its extraction using CO2 and ethanol under different pressure (200–400 bar) and temperature (35–55 °C) conditions. The extracts obtained at 300 bar and 45 °C showed strong antioxidant with moderate antimicrobial activity. Then, the extract was subjected to a sequential fractionation process. The fraction obtained at 300 bar, 45 °C, and using 32% ethanol showed the strongest antioxidant and antimicrobial activity with a high extraction yield. Finally, the potential of the two best extracts (obtained at 400 bar and 45 °C before any fractionation and the fractions obtained at 300 bar, 45 °C using 32% ethanol) was determined by conducting an impregnation process to obtain an antioxidant food-grade rigid plastic that would preserve fresh food. The percentage of cosolvent (1 and 2% ethanol), the impregnation time (1 and 3 h), the pressure (200 and 400 bar), and the temperature (35 and 55 °C) were evaluated as variables of this process. The impregnated plastic showed good antioxidant and antimicrobial activities.

Abstract
A supercritical solvent impregnation (SSI) technique was employed to incorporate, by batch- and semicontinuous-modes, bioactive olive leaf extract (OLE) into a food-grade multilayer polyethylene terephthalate/polypropylene (PET/PP) film for active food packaging applications. The inclusion of OLE in the polymer surfaces significantly modified the colour properties of the film. A correlation of 87.06% between the CIELAB colour parameters and the amount of the OLE impregnated in the film was obtained which suggests that colour determination can be used as a rapid, non-destructive technique to estimate the OLE loading in the impregnated matrices. The UV barrier and water permeability properties of the films were not significantly modified by the incorporation of OLE. The migration of OLE into a 50% (v/v) ethanol food simulant demonstrated faster release of OLE from the PP surface than from the PET surface which may be due to the different interactions between OLE and each polymer.

Abstract
Biocompatible skin wound dressing materials with long-term therapeutic windows and anti-infection properties have attracted great attention all over the world. The cooperation between essential oil and non-toxic or bio-based polymers was a promising strategy. However, the inherent volatility and chemical instability of most ingredients in essential oils make the sustained pharmacological activity of essential oil-based biomaterials a challenge. In this study, a kind of film nanocomposite loaded with patchouli essential oil (PEO-FNC) was fabricated. PEO-loaded mesoporous silica nanoparticles (PEO-MSNs) with drug load higher than 40 wt% were firstly prepared using supercritical CO2 cyclic impregnation (SCCI), and then combined with the film matrix consisting of polyvinyl alcohol and chitosan. The morphology of PEO-MSNs and PEO-FNC was observed by transmission and scanning electron microscope. The mechanical properties, including hygroscopicity, tensile strength and elongation at break (%), were tested. The release behavior of PEO from the film nanocomposite showed that PEO could keep releasing for more than five days. PEO-FNC exhibited good long-term (>48 h) antibacterial effect on Staphylococcus aureus and non-toxicity on mouse fibroblast (L929 cells), making it a promising wound dressing material.

Abstract
The development of new food preservatives is essential to prevent foodborne outbreaks or food spoilage due to microbial growth, enzymatic activity or oxidation. Furthermore, new compounds that substitute the commonly used synthetic food preservatives are needed to stifle the rising problem of microbial resistance. In this scenario, we report herein, as far as we know, for the first time the use of the zein protein as a gating moiety and its application for the controlled release of essential oil components (EOCs). The design of microdevices consist of mesoporous silica particles loaded with essential oils components (thymol, carvacrol and cinnamaldehyde) and functionalized with the zein (prolamin) protein found in corn as a molecular gate. The zein protein grafted on the synthesized microdevices is degraded by the proteolytic action of bacterial enzymatic secretions with the consequent release of the loaded essential oil components efficiently inhibiting bacterial growth. The results allow us to conclude that the new microdevice presented here loaded with the essential oil component cinnamaldehyde improved the antimicrobial properties of the free compound by decreasing volatility and increasing local concentration.
