Atmospheric CO₂ Concentration and Other Limiting Factors in the Growth of C₃ and C₄ Plants

Application of the rapid leaf A-Ci response (RACiR) technique: examples from evergreen broadleaved species

Using steady-state photosynthesis-intercellular CO₂ concentration (A-C_i) response curves to obtain the maximum rates of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase oxygenase carboxylation (V_cmax) and electron transport (J_max) is time-consuming and labour-intensive. Instead, the rapid A-C_i response (RACiR) technique provides a potential, high-efficiency method. However, efficient parameter settings of RACiR technique for evergreen broadleaved species remain unclear. Here, we used Li-COR LI-6800 to obtain the optimum parameter settings of RACiR curves for evergreen broadleaved trees and shrubs. We set 11 groups of CO₂ gradients ([CO₂]), i.e. R1 (400-1500 ppm), R2 (400-200-800 ppm), R3 (420-20-620 ppm), R4 (420-20-820 ppm), R5 (420-20-1020 ppm), R6 (420-20-1220 ppm), R7 (420-20-1520 ppm), R8 (420-20-1820 ppm), R9 (450-50-650 ppm), R10 (650-50 ppm) and R11 (650-50-650 ppm), and then compared the differences between steady-state A-C_i and RACiR curves. We found that V_cmax and J_max calculated by steady-state A-C_i and RACiR curves overall showed no significant differences across 11 [CO₂] gradients (P > 0.05). For the studied evergreens, the efficiency and accuracy of R2, R3, R4, R9 and R10 were higher than the others. Hence, we recommend that the [CO₂] gradients of R2, R3, R4, R9 and R10 could be applied preferentially for measurements when using the RACiR technique to obtain V_cmax and J_max of evergreen broadleaved species.

The differential tolerance of C3 and C4 cereals to aluminum toxicity is faded under future CO2 climate

Industrial activities have led to a gradual and global increase in soil aluminum (Al) and atmospheric CO₂ concentrations. Al bioavailability strongly depends on the soil pH, which in turn is affected by atmospheric CO₂ levels. In spite of the concurrent impact which Al and elevated CO₂ (eCO₂) could have on plants, their interaction and how it might affect the growth of economically important crop species has not been investigated. Here, we have investigated the combined impact of soil Al and eCO₂ exposure on key C3 (wheat, oat) and C4 (maize, sorghum) crops, at the physiological and biochemical level. Compared to C3 plants, C4 plants accumulated less Al by stimulating soil Al retention through exudation of root organic acids. Consequently, Al-exposed C4 plants maintained photosynthetic performance and anti-oxidative capacity. Exposure to eCO₂ reduced the stress responses of C3 and C4 crops to Al exposure. Elevated CO₂ decreased Al accumulation and oxidative damage in all cereals, and ameliorated C3 plant growth. This was reflected on the biochemical level, where eCO₂ inhibited ROS production and restored RuBisCo activity in C3 crops only. Overall, our data suggest that, compared to C3 crops, C4 cereals are more tolerant to soil Al exposure under current ambient CO₂ (aCO₂) levels whereas future eCO₂ levels might stimulate Al tolerance in C3 crops.

Elevated Atmospheric CO2 Concentration Improved C4 Xero-Halophyte Kochia prostrata Physiological Performance under Saline Conditions

A significant increase in atmospheric CO₂ concentration and associated climate aridization and soil salinity are factors affecting the growth, development, productivity, and stress responses of plants. In this study, the effect of ambient (400 ppm) and elevated (800 ppm) CO₂ concentrations were evaluated on the C₄ xero-halophyte Kochia prostrata treated with moderate salinity (200 mM NaCl) and polyethylene glycol (PEG)-induced osmotic stress. Our results indicated that plants grown at elevated CO₂ concentration had different responses to osmotic stress and salinity. The synergistic effect of elevated CO₂ and osmotic stress increased proline accumulation, but elevated CO₂ did not mitigate the negative effects of osmotic stress on dark respiration intensity and photosystem II (PSII) efficiency. This indicates a stressful state, which is accompanied by a decrease in the efficiency of light reactions of photosynthesis and significant dissipative respiratory losses, thereby resulting in growth inhibition. Plants grown at elevated CO₂ concentration and salinity showed high Na⁺ and proline contents, high water-use efficiency and time required to reach the maximum P700 oxidation level (PSI), and low dark respiration. Maintaining stable water balance, the efficient functioning of cyclic transport of PSI, and the reduction of dissipation costs contributed to an increase in dry shoot biomass (2-fold, compared with salinity at 400 ppm CO₂). The obtained experimental data and PCA showed that elevated CO₂ concentration improved the physiological parameters of K. prostrata under salinity.

C3 and C4 plant systems respond differently to the concurrent challenges of mercuric oxide nanoparticles and future climate CO2

Future climate CO₂ (eCO₂) and contamination with nano-sized heavy metals (HM-NPs) represent concurrent challenges threatening plants. The interaction between eCO₂ and HM-NPs is rarely investigated, and no study has addressed their synchronous impact on the metabolism of the multifunctional stress-related metabolites, such as sugars and amino acids. Moreover, the characteristic responses of C3 and C4 plant systems to the concurrent impact of eCO₂ and HM-NPs are poorly understood. Herein, we have assessed the impact of eCO₂ (620 ppm) and/or HgO-NPs (100 mg/Kg soil) on growth, physiology and metabolism of sugars and amino acids, particularly proline, in C3 (wheat) and C4 (maize) plant systems. Under Hg-free conditions, eCO₂ treatment markedly improved the growth and photosynthesis and induced sugars levels and metabolism (glucose, fructose, sucrose, starch, sucrose P synthase and starch synthase) in wheat (C3) only. In contrast, HgO-NPs induced the uptake, accumulation and translocation of Hg in wheat and to less extend in maize plants. Particularly in wheat, this induced significant decreases in growth and photosynthesis and increases in photorespiration, dark respiration and levels of tricarboxylic acid cycle organic acids. Interestingly, the co-application of eCO₂ reduced the accumulation of Hg and recovered the HgO-NPs-induced effects on growth and metabolism in both plants. At stress defense level, HgO-NPs induced the accumulation of sucrose and proline, more in maize, via upregulation of sucrose P synthase, ornithine amino transferase, ∆¹-pyrroline-5-carboxylate (P5C) synthetase and P5C reductase. The co-existence of eCO₂ favored reduced sucrose biosynthesis and induced proline catabolism, which provide high energy to resume plant growth. Overall, despite the difference in their response to eCO₂ under normal conditions, eCO₂ induced similar metabolic events in C3 and C4 plants under stressful conditions, which trigger stress recovery.

Impact of Nitrogen Addition on Physiological, Crop Total Nitrogen, Efficiencies and Agronomic Traits of the Wheat Crop under Rainfed Conditions

Optimizing nitrogen (N) application timings and rate can improve nutrient uptake and nutrient efficiencies in wheat, particularly under rainfed conditions. Climatic stress in the form of high temperature and drought resulted in the decreased crop physiological traits, hastened maturity and, ultimately, caused lower grain yield. The impact of N application rates as full and split dose at three diverse locations of rainfed Pothwar, Pakistan was studied through field experiments for two years (2013–14 and 2014–15). Treatments include T1 = control (no fertilizer applied), full dose of N applied at the time of crop sowing, i.e., T2 = 50 kg N ha−1, T3 = 100 kg N ha−1 and T4 = 150 kg N ha−1, and split application of N at different timings at different stages of the crop, called split application of N, i.e., T5: application of 50 kg N ha−1 (15 kg N ha−1 (sowing, BBCH (Biologische Bundesanstalt Bundessortenamt und Chemische Industrie) 0): 20 kg N ha−1 (tillering, BBCH20): 15 kg N ha−1 (anthesis, BBCH 60), T6: application of 100 kg N ha−1 (30 kg N ha−1 (sowing, BBCH 0): 40 kg N ha−1 (tillering, BBCH 20): 30 kg N ha−1 (anthesis, BBCH 60) and T7: application of 150 kg N ha−1 (45 kg N ha−1 (sowing, BBCH 0): 60 kg N ha−1 (tillering, BBCH 20): 45 kg N ha−1 (anthesis, BBCH 60). The three study sites were Islamabad (high rainfall with optimum temperature), University Research Farm (URF)-Chakwal Road, Koont (medium rainfall with moderate temperature), and Talagang (low rainfall with high temperature). Results revealed that the highest stomatal conductance (0.80 mole H2O m−2 s−1), net photosynthetic rate (20.07 μmole CO2 m−2 s−1), transpiration rate (9.58 mmole H2O m−2 s−1), intercellular CO2 concentration (329.25 μmole CO2 mol−1 air), SPAD values (58.86%) and proline contents (35.42 μg g−1) were obtained from split application of N (T6 = split N100) compared to control and full dose N treatments. Among the sites, these physiological traits remained highest at Islamabad and lowest at Talagang, while between the years, the maximum values of the measured parameters were obtained during 2013–14. A similar trend was observed for crop total N, N efficiencies, and agronomic traits of the crop. The results suggested that the optimum N application rate at appropriate timings can help to harvest the real benefits of N. The split dose resulted in the maximum performance of the crop from the physiological parameters to the agronomic traits of the crop.
