Abstract
A series of novel quaternary ammonium salts (QASs) (4a-4n) comprising a camphene moiety were synthesized for the first time. Fourteen examples were prepared from camphene through Prins reaction, halogenation, and quaternarization, successively. The structures of the synthesized QASs were analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, 1H NMR, 13C NMR and high-resolution mass spectrometry. Surface-active properties, emulsifying abilities, and foaming properties of the investigated compounds were then studied. The antimicrobial activities of these QASs against Gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis), Gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae), and fungi species (Candida albicans, Candida tropicalis, and Aspergillus niger) were determined by the microdilution method. The results showed that the chemical structural factors, including types of substitutes and alkyl chain length, might be correlated with the lipid-water partition coefficient (cLog P), which played a critical role in the antimicrobial process. Compounds with alkyl chain lengths (N) in the range of 10-14 were relatively more active, while compounds bearing pyridinium, benzyl, methylimidazolium groups, or varied alkyl chain lengths (N < 5 and N > 16) were almost inactive. Compound 4k possessing a dodecyl group exhibited the most effective and broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity against almost all tested bacteria and fungi with the minimal inhibitory concentration values ranging from 0.24 to 0.98 μg/mL.

Abstract
Liquidambar formosana Hance is a pinene-rich deciduous plant species in the Altingiaceae family that is used as a medicinal plant in China. However, the regulatory mechanisms underlying α-pinene and β-pinene biosynthesis in L. formosana leaves remain unknown. Here, a joint analysis of the volatile compounds and transcriptomes of L. formosana leaves was performed to comprehensively explore the terpene synthase (TPS) that may participate in α-pinene and β-pinene biosynthesis. Headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) jointly detected volatile L. formosana leaves. Trees with high and low levels of both α-pinene and β-pinene were defined as the H group and L group, respectively. RNA sequencing data revealed that DXR (1-deoxy-D-xylulose-5-phosphate reductoisomerase), HDS [(E)-4-hydroxy-3-methylbut-2-eny-l-diphosphate synthase], and TPS may be the major regulators of monoterpenoid biosynthesis. We identified three TPSs (LfTPS1, LfTPS2, and LfTPS3), which are highly homologous to α-pinene and β-pinene synthases of other species in phylogenetic analysis. Four TPS genes (LfTPS1, LfTPS2, LfTPS4, LfTPS5) may be critically involved in the biosynthesis and regulation of α-pinene and β-pinene in L. formosana. Bioinformatic and transcriptomic results were verified using quantitative real-time PCR. We identified LfTPS1, LfTPS2 as candidate genes for α-pinene and β-pinene biosynthesis that significantly improve the yield of beneficial terpenoids.

Abstract
Mold growth, especially Aspergillus spp. and Penicillium spp., deteriorates the quality of bakery products. Essential oils (EOs) have been categorized as good natural antimicrobials. Hereby, this study aimed to evaluate the antifungal activity of six EOs, ginger, cumin, cinnamon, black pepper, origanum, and clove, and their volatile compounds against fungal strains isolated from bread: Penicillium carneum DDS4, Aspergillus flavus DDS6, and Aspergillus niger DDS7 by disc diffusion and disc volatilization methods, respectively. Among EOs, cumin, cinnamon, origanum, and clove were found to be effective against fungal strains, and their minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum fungicidal concentration (MFC) were determined. The observed lowest MIC value of EOs was obtained at 1000 μg/mL concentration, and the lowest MFC value was obtained from the results of clove at a concentration of 1000 μg/mL. Based on the MIC and MFC values, clove and cinnamon EOs were found to be more effective at lower concentrations. Electrospun nanofiber films of clove and cinnamon were produced with 6% poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), 2% β-cyclodextrin (β-CD), and 2% EO to overcome the unfavorable sensory impact of EOs on food products. The inhibitory activity of cinnamon EO film (2.64-2.51 log(CFU/mg)) was considerably lower than clove EO film (3.18-3.24 log(CFU/mg)) against P. carneum DDS4 and A. niger DDS7. Furthermore, these nanofiber films prevented fungal growth on bread samples visibly and were shown to be an alternative application for active food packaging.

Abstract
This study was conducted to examine the chemical constituents of Origanum majorana L. essential oils (EOs) that originate in Nepal, as well as their biological activities, antioxidant properties, and enantiomeric compositions. The EOs were extracted by the hydro-distillation method using a Clevenger-type apparatus and their chemical compositions were determined through gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Chiral GC-MS was used to evaluate the enantiomeric compositions of EOs. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of the essential oils were determined by the micro-broth dilution method, and the antioxidant activity was evaluated by the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl scavenging assay and ferric-reducing antioxidant power (FRAP). GC-MS analysis showed the presence of 50 and 41 compounds in the EO samples, (S1) and (S2), respectively, representing the Kathmandu and Bhaktapur districts. The oxygenated monoterpenoids, along with terpinen-4-ol, were predominant constituents in both EO samples. However, the EOs from two locations showed some variations in their major components. The chiral terpenoids for two EO samples of marjoram have also been reported in this study in an elaborative way for the first time in accordance with the literature review. A hierarchical cluster analysis based on the compositions of EOs with 50 compositions reported in the literature revealed at least 5 different chemotypes of marjoram oil. The antioxidant activity for the sample (S2) was found to be relatively moderate, with an IC50 value of 225.61 ± 0.05 μg/mL and an EC50 value of 372.72 ± 0.84 µg/mL, as compared to the standard used. Furthermore, with an MIC value of 78.1 µg/mL, the EO from sample (S2) demonstrated effective antifungal activity against Aspergillus niger and Candida albicans. Moreover, both samples displayed considerable antimicrobial activity. The results suggest that EOs of Origanum majorana possess some noteworthy antimicrobial properties as well as antioxidant activity, and hence can be used as a natural preservative ingredient in the food and pharmaceutical industries.

Abstract
Coreopsis tinctoria Nutt. was used to extract oleoresin through supercritical CO2 extraction technology. The extraction conditions were optimized using response surface methodology, and the chemical composition of C. tinctoria Nutt. oleoresin (CTO) was analyzed. Under the optimal conditions, the antioxidant activity of oleoresin was determined using 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH˙) and 2,2′-azino-bis-(3-ethylbenzo-thiazoline-6-sulphonic acid)diammonium salt (ABTS˙+) free radical scavenging assays. The optimal extraction conditions were a 27.5 MPa extraction pressure, a 45°C extraction temperature, and a 3 h extraction time. Under these extraction conditions, oleoresin yield was up to 3.163%. Compared to steam distillation extraction, the CTO extracted using supercritical CO2 had more abundant components. The EC50 of CTO for DPPH˙ and ABTS˙+ free radical scavengers was 1.54 and 1.07 mg/mL, respectively.

Abstract
A comparative analysis of Gaultheria fragrantissima (Ericaceae) essential oils based on geographical location, distillation time, and varying distillation conditions was carried out, and their compositions were evaluated by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), chiral GC-MS, and gas chromatography-flame ionization detection (GC-FID). In addition, each of seven commercial wintergreen essential oil samples from Nepal and China were analyzed. The highest extraction yield was 1.48% and the maximum number of compounds identified in natural wintergreen oil was twenty-two. Based on distillation time, the maximum numbers of identified compounds are present in 120 min. Linalool, phenol, vetispirane, and ethyl salicylate were present in commercial wintergreen oils both from Nepal and China. The presence of compounds such as elsholtzia ketone and β-dehydroelsholtzia ketone in the China samples represented a significant difference in wintergreen oil between the two geographical sources. Dimethyl 2-hydroxyterephthalate is a well-known synthetic marker for wintergreen oil when synthesis is carried out using salicylic acid, but the synthetic marker was absent while using acetylsalicylic acid as a precursor during synthesis. Adulteration analysis of wintergreen oil showed an increase in the concentration of dimethyl 2-hydroxyterephthalate, whereas the concentrations of minor components decreased and methyl salicylate remained unchanged. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of the enantioselective analysis of wintergreen essential oil. Furthermore, three samples showed notable antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus epidermidis, with an MIC value of 156.3 μg/mL. Similarly, one sample showed effectiveness against Aspergillus niger (MIC = 78.1 μg/mL).

Abstract
Zingiber officinale Roscoe rhizome plays a vital role in food flavoring as well as utilization in folk medicine. Nepal is categorized among the leading countries of Z. officinale rhizome production and export. Mature Z. officinale rhizome collection is based on the major production sites within Nepal, but we are currently unaware of the chemical composition of essential oil for export. A comparative investigation of Z. officinale rhizome essential oil compositions, collected from 12 different sites of the eastern, mid, and western regions of Nepal, has been carried out. The analysis of essential oils chemical composition by gas chromatographic–mass spectral (GC-MS), enantiomeric composition by chiral gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (CGC-MS), and antimicrobial activity was evaluated. Essential oil yields ranged from 0.28% to 0.34%. The results showed that the essential oils obtained in this study contained α-zingiberene (8.6%-24.1%), camphene (7.2%-12.8%), β-phellandrene (3.8%-10.1%), neral (0.6%-11.8%), geranial (1.0%-17.4%), ar-curcumene (3.0%-10.3%), and β-sesquiphellandrene (3.7%-9.7%). With CGC-MS, the enantiomeric distributions of 21 chiral compounds were determined and showed no contrasting enantiomeric distributions. Two essential oil samples (G3 and G5) possessed good antibacterial activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa (MIC = 78.1μg/mL) and excellent antifungal activity against Aspergillus niger (MIC = 39.1 μg/mL). Based on the content of α-zingiberene and citral (neral and geranial), samples collected from their respective areas might be used to identify an ideal Z. officinale rhizome production zone in Nepal.

Abstract
Citrus species of plants are among the most commercially cultivated crops, mainly for their fruit. Besides, the generally consumed flesh inside the fruit, the peel is quite important too. Essential oils extracted from the peel have a history of being used by humankind for centuries. These essential oils are rich in antioxidants and antimicrobial agents. Comparative investigation of volatile constituents, and antioxidant and antimicrobial activities were undertaken. The essential oils were evaluated through gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), and enantiomeric composition by chiral GC-MS. Similarly, the antioxidant properties were evaluated by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl scavenging assay, and antimicrobial activities were assayed using the disk diffusion method. The highest extraction yield of 1.83% was observed in Citrus sinensis Osbeck. GC-MS analysis showed limonene (63.76-89.15%), γ-terpinene (0.24-6.43%), β-pinene (0.15-6.09%), linalool (0.35-3.5%), sabinene (0.77-2.17%), myrcene (0.74-1.75%), α-terpineol (0.28-1.15%), and α-pinene (0.2-0.58%) as the major constituents of the essential oil of the Citrus species studied. For the first time, through our study, chiral terpenoids have been observed from Citrus grandis Osbeck essential oil. The order of antioxidant activity is as follows: Citrus grandis Osbeck red flesh > Citrus reticulata Blanco > Citrus sinensis Osbeck > Citrus grandis Osbeck white flesh. Except for Citrus grandis Osbeck white flesh (52.34 µL/mL), all samples demonstrated stronger antioxidant activities than those of the positive control, quercetin (5.60 µL/mL). Therefore, these essential oils can be used as a safe natural antioxidant to prevent product oxidation. Likewise, citrus peel essential oil showed antimicrobial activity against tested bacterial strains, albeit marginal.

Abstract
Packaging is used to protect foods from environmental influences and microbial contamination to maintain the quality and safety of commercial food products, to avoid their spoilage and to extend their shelf life. In this respect, bioactive packaging is developing to additionally provides antibacterial and antioxidant activity with the same goals i.e., extending the shelf life while ensuring safety of the food products. New solutions are designed using natural antimicrobial and antioxidant agents such as essential oils, some polysaccharides, natural inorganic nanoparticles (nanoclays, oxides, metals as silver) incorporated/encapsulated into appropriate carriers in order to be used in food packaging. Electrospinning/electrospraying are receiving attention as encapsulation methods due to their cost-effectiveness, versatility and scalability. The electrospun nanofibers and electro-sprayed nanoparticles can preserve the functionality and protect the encapsulated bioactive compounds (BC). In this review are summarized recent results regarding applications of nanostructured suitable materials containing essential oils for food safety.

Abstract
Cinnamomum camphora L. is grown as an ornamental plant, used as raw material for furniture, as a source of camphor, and its essential oil can be used as an important source for perfume as well as alternative medicine. A comparative investigation of essential oil compositions and antimicrobial activities of different tissues of C. camphora was carried out. The essential oils were extracted by hydrodistillation with a Clevenger apparatus and their compositions were evaluated through gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), enantiomeric composition by chiral GC-MS, and antimicrobial properties were assayed by measuring minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs). Different plant tissues had different extraction yields, with the leaf having the highest yield. GC-MS analysis revealed the presence of 18, 75, 87, 67, 67, and 74 compounds in leaf, branch, wood, root, leaf/branch, and leaf/branch/wood, respectively. The significance of combining tissues is to enable extraction of commercial quality essential oils without the need to separate them. The oxygenated monoterpene camphor was the major component in all tissues of C. camphora except for safrole in the root. With chiral GC-MS, the enantiomeric distributions of 12, 12, 13, 14, and 14 chiral compounds in branch, wood, root, leaf/branch, and leaf/branch/wood, respectively, were determined. The variation in composition and enantiomeric distribution in the different tissues of C. camphora may be attributed to the different defense requirements of these tissues. The wood essential oil showed effective antibacterial activity against Serratia marcescens with an MIC of 39.1 μg/mL. Similarly, the mixture of leaf/branch/wood essential oils displayed good antifungal activity against Aspergillus niger and Aspergillus fumigatus while the leaf essential oil was notably active against Trichophyton rubrum. C. camphora essential oils showed variable antimicrobial activities against dermal and pulmonary-borne microbes.

Abstract
The increasing bacterial resistance to antibiotics is a worldwide concern. Essential oils are known to possess remarkable antibacterial properties, but their high chemical variability complicates their development into new antibacterial agents. Therefore, the main purpose of this study was to standardize their chemical composition. Several commercial essential oils of ajowan (Trachyspermum ammi L.) and thyme (chemotype thymol) (Thymus vulgaris L.) were bought on the market. GC-MS analysis revealed that thyme essential oils have a chemical composition far more consistent than ajowan essential oils. Sometimes thymol was not even the major compound. The most abundant compounds and the homemade mixtures were tested against two Staphylococcus aureus strains. The antibacterial property of β-caryophyllene presented no direct activity against S. aureus LMG 15975, but in association with thymol or carvacrol at equal percentages an MIC of 125 μg/mL was observed. The mixture of those three compounds at equivalent percentages also decreased by 16-fold the MIC of the penicillin V. Against S. aureus LMG 21674, β-caryophyllene presented an MIC of 31.3 μg/mL and decreased by 267-fold the MIC of the penicillin V. These observations led us to question the benefits of using a complex chemical mixture instead of one active compound to fight bacterial resistance.

Abstract
In the present study, the chemical composition, antioxidant and antibacterial activities of the essential oil obtained by hydrodistillation of the aerial parts of Englerastrum gracillimum Th. C. E. Fries growing in Niger were investigated. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC–MS) analysis of the essential oil resulted in the identification of 42 compounds representing 97.9% of the total oil constituents. The major compounds of the essential oil were: α-humulene (30.5%), followed by cubenol (19.8%), γ-muurolene (14.0%), ( E)-β-caryophyllene (5.8%), β-gurjunene (5.2%), and curzerene (4.9%). The antioxidant activity of the essential oil was determined by using the free radical-scavenging activity (2,2 diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl: DPPH˙) and ferric reducing antioxidant power assays. The essential oil showed good antioxidant potential with both methods. The antibacterial activity was evaluated against multi-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii P1483, extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) -Escherichia coli Bu8566, Salmonella spp. H1548, Proteus mirabilis Bu190 , Enterobacter cloacae Bu147, Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC 27853), Escherichia coli (ATCC 25922), Klebsiella pneumoniae (ATCC 700603), methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus P1123, Enterococcus faecium H3434, and Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 25923) using the agar disc diffusion and microdilution methods. The essential oil exhibited good antibacterial activity. The highest antibacterial effect was observed against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923 and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus P1123 with minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) values of 0.03 mg/mL and 0.06 mg/mL, respectively. These data are of scientific importance for the valorization of aromatic and medicinal plants of Niger, especially E. gracillimum. This study reports for the first time the antioxidant and antibacterial activities of this essential oil.

Abstract
There is increasing interest in the use of natural preservatives (rather than synthetic ones) for maintaining the quality and safety of foods due to their perceived environmental and health benefits. In particular, plant-based antimicrobials are being employed to protect against microbial spoilage, thereby improving food safety, quality, and shelf-life. However, many natural antimicrobials cannot be utilized in their free form due to their chemical instability, poor dispersibility in food matrices, or unacceptable flavor profiles. For these reasons, encapsulation technologies, such as nanoemulsions, are being developed to overcome these hurdles. Indeed, encapsulation of plant-based preservatives can improve their handling and ease of use, as well as enhance their potency. This review highlights the various kinds of plant-based preservatives that are available for use in food applications. It then describes the methods available for forming nanoemulsions and shows how they can be used to encapsulate and deliver plant-based preservatives. Finally, potential applications of nano-emulsified plant-based preservatives for improving food quality and safety are demonstrated in the meat, fish, dairy, and fresh produce areas.

Abstract
Mosquito-borne diseases are a large problem in Vietnam as elsewhere. Due to environmental concerns regarding the use of synthetic insecticides as well as developing insecticidal resistance, there is a need for environmentally-benign alternative mosquito control agents. In addition, resistance of pathogenic microorganisms to antibiotics is an increasing problem. As part of a program to identify essential oils as alternative larvicidal and antimicrobial agents, the leaf, stem, and rhizome essential oils of several Zingiber species, obtained from wild-growing specimens in northern Vietnam, were acquired by hydrodistillation and investigated using gas chromatography. The mosquito larvicidal activities of the essential oils were assessed against Culex quinquefasciatus, Aedes albopictus, and Ae. aegypti, and for antibacterial activity against a selection of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, and for activity against Candida albicans. Zingiber essential oils rich in α-pinene and β-pinene showed the best larvicidal activity. Zingiber nudicarpum rhizome essential oil showed excellent antibacterial activity against Enterococcus faecalis, Staphylococcus aureus, and Bacillus cereus, with minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) of 2, 8, and 1 μg/mL, respectively. However, the major components, α-pinene and β-pinene, cannot explain the antibacterial activities obtained.
