Application of Silsesquioxanes in the Preparation of Polyolefin-Based Materials

This paper is a review of studies on the use of the polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS) of various structures in the synthesis of polyolefins and the modification of their properties, namely: (1) components of organometallic catalytic systems for the polymerization of olefins, (2) comonomers in the copolymerization with ethylene, and (3) fillers in composites based on polyolefins. In addition, studies on the use of new silicon compounds, i.e., siloxane-silsesquioxane resins, as fillers for composites based on polyolefins are presented. The authors dedicate this paper to Professor Bogdan Marciniec on the occasion of his jubilee.

A library of new bifunctional alkenes obtained by a highly regiodivergent silylation of 1,5-hexadiene

An efficient methodology for the synthesis of two groups of silicon-containing alkenes is reported. It includes a highly regioselective functionalization of 1,5-hexadiene through hydrosilylation and dehydrogenative silylation with organofunctional silanes and siloxanes. The established conditions enable selective monofunctionalization of 1,5-hexadiene regardless of the organosilicon modifier used as well as the type of functional group bonded to the silicon-based compound. All products were isolated and fully characterized by NMR spectroscopy and MS techniques.

Preparation of Tri(alkenyl)functional Open-Cage Silsesquioxanes as Specific Polymer Modifiers

The scientific reports on polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes are mostly focused on the formation of completely condensed T₈ cubic type structures and recently so-called double-decker derivatives. Herein, we report on efficient synthetic routes leading to trifunctionalized, open-cage silsesquioxanes with alkenyl groups of varying chain lengths from -vinyl to -dec-9-enyl and two types of inert groups (iBu, Ph) at the silsesquioxane core. The presented methodology was focused on hydrolytic condensation reaction and it enabled obtaining titled compounds with high yields and purity. A parallel synthetic methodology that was based on the hydrosilylation reaction was also studied. Additionally, a thorough characterization of the obtained compounds was performed, also in terms of their thermal stability, melting and crystallization temperatures (TGA and DSC) in order to show the changes in the abovementioned parameters dependent on the type of reactive as well as inert groups at Si-O-Si core. The presence of unsaturated alkenyl groups has a profound impact on the application potential of these systems, i.e., as modifiers or comonomers for copolymerization reaction.

Synthesis of a "Butterfly Cage" Based on a Double-Decker Silsesquioxane

Novel polyhedral structures were prepared with a butterfly-shape composed of oligosiloxane wings and a double-decker silsesquioxane (DDSQ) body. The compounds were synthesized in two steps from commercially available alkoxysilanes, and their structures were confirmed using spectroscopic methods and X-ray crystallography. Not like other phenyl-substituted cage silsesquioxanes, these butterfly cages show very good solubility in common organic solvents. The crystal structures clearly showed their unique features: a larger space with longer siloxane chains and a very flexible framework. Moreover, these compounds are thermally stable with a Td₅ (5 % weight loss temperature) over 320 °C.
