An Up-to-Date Overview of Liquid Crystals and Liquid Crystal Polymers for Different Applications: A Review

Liquid crystals have been extensively used in various applications, such as optoelectronic devices, biomedical applications, sensors and biosensors, and packaging, among others. Liquid crystal polymers are one type of liquid crystal material, combining their intrinsic properties with polymeric flexibility for advanced applications in displays and smart materials. For instance, liquid crystal polymers can serve as drug nanocarriers, forming cubic or hexagonal mesophases, which can be tailored for controlled drug release. Further applications of liquid crystals and liquid crystal polymers include the preparation of membranes for separation processes, such as wastewater treatment. Furthermore, these materials can be used as ion-conducting membranes for fuel cells or lithium batteries due to their broad types of mesophases. This review aims to provide an overall explanation and classification of liquid crystals and liquid crystal polymers. Furthermore, the great potential of these materials relies on their broad range of applications, which are determined by their unique properties. Moreover, this study provides the latest advances in liquid crystal polymer-based membranes and their applications, focusing especially on fuel cells. Moreover, future directions in the applications of various liquid crystals are highlighted.

Membranes for Cation Transport Based on Dendronized Poly(Epichlorohydrin-Co-Ethylene Oxide). Part 2: Membrane Characterization and Transport Properties

In this paper, we report on the preparation and characterization of membranes out of two side-chain liquid crystalline copolymers, dendronized at two different extents (20 and 40%, CP20 and CP40, respectively). The membranes were characterized by atomic force microscopy (AFM), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), contact angle (CA) analysis, and water uptake. Moreover, transport properties were studied by methanol and proton conductivity experiment and by linear sweep voltammetry (LSV). For the sake of comparison, the behavior of the grafted copolymers was compared with the unmodified copolyether CP0 and with Nafion 117. Results demonstrated that in CP20 and CP40, cation transport depends on the presence of defined cationic channels, not affected by water presence; the comparison between LSV experiments performed with different alkaline cations suggests that CP40 possesses channels with larger diameters and better-defined inner structures.

Poly(ionic liquid)s Based on Copolymers of Poly(ethylene oxide) and Cationic Glycidyl Triazolyl Polymers with Tribranched Side Chains

Copolymers comprising poly(ethylene oxide) and cationic glycidyl triazolyl polymer with tribranched side chains (PEO-co-GTP·3X) were synthesized from glycidyl azide copolymer (PEO-co-GAP) and the tricationic alkyne. A synthetic route for the tricationic alkyne was also improved. Bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (TFSI) and bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (FSI) were used as counteranions. Copolymers PEO-co-GTP·3TFSI and PEO-co-GTP·3FSI were characterized by NMR, IR, size exclusion chromatography, DSC, TGA, rheological, and impedance measurements. The NMR results suggested that the main chain of the copolymer was more flexible than that of the homopolymer. However, no major changes were detected in the glass transition temperature and ionic conductivity of the homopolymer and copolymer with TFSI counteranions. The counterion exchange from TFSI to FSI resulted in an increase in the storage modulus and complex viscosity because of the ionic association. Despite its unfavorable viscoelastic properties, PEO-co-GTP·3FSI exhibited higher ionic conductivity than PEO-co-GTP·3TFSI (3.9 × 10^-5 S cm^-1 at 25 °C under anhydrous conditions).

Raman Spectroscopic Study of Coal Samples during Heating

Raman spectroscopy can be used to record the characteristic spectra of carbonaceous materials. The D and G bands are the most popular and most important spectral characteristics when discussing carbonaceous materials. In this paper, a Raman spectroscopic study of different coals was first carried out using a 355 nm wavelength laser beam as an excitation source. The spectral parameters of the resultant spectra were evaluated and analyzed. Raman spectral characteristics of different kinds of coals were explored. The high temperature-dependent Raman spectra of the coals were further collected in a temperature range from 298 to 1473 K in order to investigate the transformations of the internal structure of the coals during the pyrolysis process. An abnormal blue shift of the G band occurred at moderate temperature (600–900 K), and the intensity of the G band became weaker at high temperatures, indicating pyrolysis and graphitization of the sample at moderate and high temperature, respectively.

Tuning the Hydrophobicity of a Hydrogel Using Self-Assembled Domains of Polymer Cross-Linkers

Hydrogels incorporated with hydrophobic motifs have received considerable attention to recapitulate the cellular microenvironments, specifically for the bio-mineralization of a 3D matrix. Introduction of hydrophobic molecules into a hydrogel often results in irregular arrangement of the motifs, and further phase separation of hydrophobic domains, but limited efforts have been made to resolve this challenge in developing the hydrophobically-modified hydrogel. Therefore, this study presents an advanced integrative strategy to incorporate hydrophobic domains regularly in a hydrogel using self-assembled domains formed with polymer cross-linkers, building blocks of a hydrogel. Self-assemblies formed by polymer cross-linkers were examined as micro-domains to incorporate hydrophobic motifs in a hydrogel. The self-assembled structures in a pre-gelled solution were confirmed with the fluorescence analysis and the hydrophobicity of a hydrogel could be tuned by incorporating the hydrophobic chains in a controlled manner. Overall, the results of this study would greatly serve to tuning performance of a wide array of hydrophobically-modified hydrogels in drug delivery, cell therapies and tissue engineering.

Study on the Main Influencing Factors in the Removal Process of Non-Stick Fluoropolymer Coatings Using Nd:YAG Laser

The coatings with fluoropolymer resins rich in fluorinated ethylene propylene (FEP) and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) are applied as anti-adherent coatings on aluminum⁻magnesium substrates for use in food containers. In many cases, due to wear, they must be stripped for the application of a new coating on the same substrate. There are several processes for this: blasting, plasma, pyrolysis, chemical processes, laser, high pressure water, and combinations of these. This work focuses on the characterization of the main factors that condition the FEP coating removal process by a continuous wave (CW) Nd:YAG laser, and on the determination of the efficiency of this type of technology used for this purpose. Stripping surface per unit of time and energy consumption per unit area has been determined among other efficiency indicators. Regarding the characterization of the coating object of study, its thickness, surface roughness, contact angle, microhardness and absorbance-reflectance responses have been determined, and the results have been compared with those obtained in the case of PTFE. In addition, to evaluate the mechanical damage caused in the substrate after coating removal by (CW) Nd:YAG laser, the tensile strength, Vickers hardness, Ra and Rz roughness, and the substrate thickness have been measured and analyzed.

Solvent-free thiophene-based electrolytes: synthesis of new liquid-crystalline ionic conductors for batteries: part I

We report the synthesis of new liquid crystalline thiophene esters, ThBz1 and ThBz2, for use in lithium-ion batteries as new, safe, solvent-free ionic conductors.
