Visco-Hyperelastic Model with Damage for Simulating Cyclic Thermoplastic Elastomers Behavior Applied to an Industrial Component

Finite Bending of Fiber-Reinforced Visco-Hyperelastic Material: Analytical Approach and FEM

This paper presents a new anisotropic visco-hyperelastic constitutive model for finite bending of an incompressible rectangular elastomeric material. The proposed approach is based on the Mooney-Rivlin anisotropic strain energy function and non-linear visco-hyperelastic method. In this study, we aim to examine the mechanical response of a reinforced viscoelastic rectangular bar with a group of fibers under bending. Anisotropic materials are typically composed of one (or more) family of reinforcing fibers embedded within a soft matrix material. This operation may lead to an enhancement in the strength and stiffness of soft materials. In addition, a finite element simulation is carried out to validate the accuracy of the analytical solution. In this research, the well-known stress relaxation test, as well as the multi-step relaxation test, are examined both analytically and numerically. The results obtained from the analytical solution are found to be in good agreement with those from the finite element method. Therefore, it can be deduced that the proposed model is competent in describing the mechanical behavior of fiber-reinforced materials when subjected to finite bending deformations.

Viscoelastic Characterization of a Thermoplastic Elastomer Processed through Material Extrusion

Objective. We aim to characterize the viscoelastic behavior of Polyether-Block-Amide (PEBA 90A), provide reference values for the parameters of a constitutive model for the simulation of mechanical behaviors, and paying attention to the influence of the manufacturing conditions. Methods. Uniaxial relaxation tests of filaments of PEBA were used to determine the values of the parameters of a Prony series for a Quasi-Linear Visco-Elastic (QLVE) model. Additional, fast cyclic loading tests were used to corroborate the adequacy of the model under different test criteria in a second test situation. Results. The QLVE model predicts the results of the relaxation tests very accurately. In addition, the behavior inferred from this model fits very well with the measurements of fast cyclic loading tests. The viscoelastic behavior of PEBA under small strain polymer fits very well to a six-parameter QLVE model.

Mechanical Behaviour of Large Strain Capacitive Sensor with Barium Titanate Ecoflex Composite Used to Detect Human Motion

In this paper, the effect of strain rate on the output signal of highly stretchable interdigitated capacitive (IDC) strain sensors is studied. IDC sensors fabricated with pristine Ecoflex and a composite based on 40 wt% of 200 nm barium titanate (BTO) dispersed in a silicone elastomer (Ecoflex 00-30TM) were subjected to 1000 stretch and relax cycles to study the effect of dynamic loading conditions on the output signal of the IDC sensor. It was observed that the strain rate has no effect on the output signal of IDC sensor. To study the non-linear elastic behaviour of pristine Ecoflex and composites based on 10, 20, 30, 40 wt% of 200 nm BTO filler dispersed in a silicone elastomer, we conducted uniaxial tensile testing to failure at strain rates of ~5, ~50, and ~500 mm/min. An Ogden second-order model was used to fit the uniaxial tensile test data to understand the non-linearity in the stress-strain responses of BTO-Ecoflex composite at different strain rates. The decrease in Ogden parameters (α1 and α2) indicates the decrease in non-linearity of the stress-strain response of the composite with an increase in filler loading. Scanning electronic microscopy analysis was performed on the cryo-fractured pristine Ecoflex and 10, 20, 30, and 40 wt% of BTO-Ecoflex composites, where it was found that 200 nm BTO is more uniformly distributed in Ecoflex at a higher filler loading levels (40 wt% 200 nm BTO). Therefore, an IDC sensor was fabricated based on a 40 wt% 200 nm BTO-Ecoflex composite and mounted on an elastic elbow sleeve with supporting electronics, and successfully functioned as a reliable and robust flexible sensor, demonstrating an application to measure the bending angle of an elbow at slow and fast movement of the arm. A linear relationship with respect to the elbow bending angle was observed between the IDC sensor output signal under a 50% strain and the deflection of the elbow of hand indicating its potential as a stretchable, flexible, and wearable sensor.

A New Multiparameter Model for Multiaxial Fatigue Life Prediction of Rubber Materials

Most of the mechanical components manufactured in rubber materials experience fluctuating loads, which cause material fatigue, significantly reducing their life. Different models have been used to approach this problem. However, most of them just provide life prediction only valid for each of the specific studied material and type of specimen used for the experimental testing. This work focuses on the development of a new generalized model of multiaxial fatigue for rubber materials, introducing a multiparameter variable to improve fatigue life prediction by considering simultaneously relevant information concerning stresses, strains, and strain energies. The model is verified through its correlation with several published fatigue tests for different rubber materials. The proposed model has been compared with more than 20 different parameters used in the specialized literature, calculating the value of the R² coefficient by comparing the predicted values of every model, with the experimental ones. The obtained results show a significant improvement in the fatigue life prediction. The proposed model does not aim to be a universal and definitive approach for elastomer fatigue, but it provides a reliable general tool that can be used for processing data obtained from experimental tests carried out under different conditions.
