Review of Piezoelectrical Materials Potentially Useful for Peripheral Nerve Repair

It has increasingly been recognized that electrical currents play a pivotal role in cell migration and tissue repair, in a process named "galvanotaxis". In this review, we summarize the current evidence supporting the potential benefits of electric stimulation (ES) in the physiology of peripheral nerve repair (PNR). Moreover, we discuss the potential of piezoelectric materials in this context. The use of these materials has deserved great attention, as the movement of the body or of the external environment can be used to power internally the electrical properties of devices used for providing ES or acting as sensory receptors in artificial skin (e-skin). The fact that organic materials sustain spontaneous degradation inside the body means their piezoelectric effect is limited in duration. In the case of PNR, this is not necessarily problematic, as ES is only required during the regeneration period. Arguably, piezoelectric materials have the potential to revolutionize PNR with new biomedical devices that range from scaffolds and nerve-guiding conduits to sensory or efferent components of e-skin. However, much remains to be learned regarding piezoelectric materials, their use in manufacturing of biomedical devices, and their sterilization process, to fine-tune their safe, effective, and predictable in vivo application.

Degradation by Electron Beam Irradiation of Some Elastomeric Composites Sulphur Vulcanized

Composites based on natural rubber and plasticized starch obtained by the conventional method of sulfur cross-linking using four types of vulcanization accelerators (Diphenyl guanidine, 2-Mercaptobenzothiazole, N-Cyclohexyl-2-benzothiazole sulfenamide, and Tetramethylthiuram disulfide) were irradiated with an electron beam in the dose range of 150 and 450 kGy for the purpose of degradation. The vulcanization accelerators were used in different percentages and combinations, resulting in four mixtures with different potential during the cross-linking process (synergistic, activator, or additive). The resulting composites were investigated before and after irradiation in order to establish a connection between the type of accelerator mixture, irradiation dose, and composite properties (gel fraction, cross-linking degree, water absorption, mass loss in water and toluene, mechanical properties, and structural and morphological properties). The results showed that the mixtures became sensitive at the irradiation dose of 300 kGy and at the irradiation dose of 450 kGy, and the consequences of the degradation processes were discussed.

Stability Study of the Irradiated Poly(lactic acid)/Styrene Isoprene Styrene Reinforced with Silica Nanoparticles

In this paper, the stability improvement of poly(lactic acid) (PLA)/styrene-isoprene block copolymer (SIS) loaded with silica nanoparticles is characterized. The protection efficiency in the material of thermal stability is mainly studied by means of high accurate isothermal and nonisothermal chemiluminescence procedures. The oxidation induction times obtained in the isothermal CL determinations increase from 45 min to 312 min as the polymer is free of silica or the filler loading is about 10%, respectively. The nonisothermal measurements reveal the values of onset oxidation temperatures with about 15% when the concentration of SiO2 particles is enhanced from none to 10%. The curing assay and Charlesby-Pinner representation as well as the modifications that occurred in the FTIR carbonyl band at 1745 cm-1 are appropriate proofs for the delay of oxidation in hybrid samples. The improved efficiency of silica during the accelerated degradation of PLA/SIS 30/n-SiO2 composites is demonstrated by means of the increased values of activation energy in correlation with the augmentation of silica loading. While the pristine material is modified by the addition of 10% silica nanoparticles, the activation energy grows from 55 kJ mol-1 to 74 kJ mol-1 for nonirradiated samples and from 47 kJ mol-1 to 76 kJ mol-1 for γ-processed material at 25 kGy. The stabilizer features are associated with silica nanoparticles due to the protection of fragments generated by the scission of hydrocarbon structure of SIS, the minor component, whose degradation fragments are early converted into hydroperoxides rather than influencing depolymerization in the PLA phase. The reduction of the transmission values concerning the growing reinforcement is evidence of the capacity of SiO2 to minimize the changes in polymers subjected to high energy sterilization. The silica loading of 10 wt% may be considered a proper solution for attaining an extended lifespan under the accelerated degradation caused by the intense transfer of energy, such as radiation processing on the polymer hybrid.

On the Mechanism of Electron Beam Radiation-Induced Modification of Poly(lactic acid) for Applications in Biodegradable Food Packaging

Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) is a biodegradable polymer used for food packaging. The effects of electron beam radiation on the chemical and physical properties of amorphous PLA were studied. In this study, amorphous, racemic PLA was irradiated at doses of 5, 10, 15, and 20 kGy in the absence of oxygen. Utilizing electron paramagnetic resonance spectrometry, it was found that alkoxyl radicals are initially formed as a result of C-O-C bond scissions on the backbone of the PLA. The dominant radiation mechanism was determined to be H-abstraction by alkoxyl radicals to form C-centered radicals. The C-centered radicals undergo a subsequent peroxidation reaction with oxygen. The gel permeation chromatography (GPC) results indicate reduction in polymer molecular mass. The differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffraction results showed a subtle increase in crystallinity of the irradiated PLA. Water vapor transmission rates were unaffected by irradiation. In conclusion, these results support that irradiated PLA is a suitable material for applications in irradiation of food packaging, including food sterilization and biodegradation.

Thermally Conductive Shape Memory Polymer Composites Filled with Boron Nitride for Heat Management in Electrical Insulation

The evaluation of a possible application of functional shrinkable materials in thermally conductive electrical insulation elements was investigated. The effectiveness of an electron beam and gamma radiation on the crosslinking of a selected high density polyethylene grade was analyzed, both qualitatively and quantitatively. The crosslinked polymer composites filled with ceramic particles were successfully fabricated and tested. On the basis of the performed investigation, it was concluded that the selected filler, namely a boron nitride powder, is suitable for the preparation of the crosslinked polymer composites with enhanced thermal conductivity. The shape memory effect was fully observed in the crosslinked samples with a recovery factor reaching nearly 99%. There was no significant influence of the crosslinking, stretching, and recovery of the polymer composite during shape memory phenomenon on the value of thermal conductivity. The proposed boron nitride filled polyethylene composite subjected to crosslinking is a promising candidate for fabrication of thermally shrinkable material with enhanced heat dissipation functionality for application as electrically insulating components.

Understanding of how the properties of medical grade lactide based copolymer scaffolds influence adipose tissue regeneration: Sterilization and a systematic in vitro assessment

Aliphatic polyesters are the synthetic polymers most commonly used in the development of resorbable medical implants/devices. Various three-dimensional (3D) scaffolds have been fabricated from these polymers and used in adipose tissue engineering. However, their systematic evaluation altogether lacks, which makes it difficult to select a suitable degradable polymer to design 3D resorbable implants and/or devices able to effectively mimic the properties of adipose tissue. Additionally, the impact of sterilization methods on the medical devices, if any, must be taken into account. We evaluate and compare five different medical-grade resorbable polyesters with l-lactide content ranging from 50 to 100 mol% and exhibiting different physiochemical properties depending on the comonomer (d-lactide, ε-caprolactone, glycolide, and trimethylene carbonate). The salt-leaching technique was used to prepare 3D microporous scaffolds. A comprehensive assessment of physical, chemical, and mechanical properties of the scaffolds was carried out in PBS at 37 °C. The cell-material interactions and the ability of the scaffolds to promote adipogenesis of human adipose tissue-derived stem cells were assessed in vitro. The diverse physical and mechanical properties of the scaffolds, due to the different composition of the copolymers, influenced human adipose tissue-derived stem cells proliferation and differentiation. Scaffolds made from polymers which were above their glass transition temperature and with low degree of crystallinity showed better proliferation and adipogenic differentiation of stem cells. The effect of sterilization techniques (electron beam and ethylene oxide) on the polymer properties was also evaluated. Results showed that scaffolds sterilized with the ethylene oxide method better retained their physical and chemical properties. Overall, the presented research provides (i) a detailed understanding to select a degradable polymer that has relevant properties to augment adipose tissue regeneration and can be further used to fabricate medical devices/implants; (ii) directions to prefer a sterilization method that does not change polymer properties.

Crosslinking of Polylactide by High Energy Irradiation and Photo-Curing

Polylactide (PLA) is presently the most studied bioderived polymer because, in addition to its established position as a material for biomedical applications, it can replace mass production plastics from petroleum. However, some drawbacks of polylactide such as insufficient mechanical properties at a higher temperature and poor shape stability have to be overcome. One of the methods of mechanical and thermal properties modification is crosslinking which can be achieved by different approaches, both at the stage of PLA-based materials synthesis and by physical modification of neat polylactide. This review covers PLA crosslinking by applying different types of irradiation, i.e., high energy electron beam or gamma irradiation and UV light which enables curing at mild conditions. In the last section, selected examples of biomedical applications as well as applications for packaging and daily-use items are presented in order to visualize how a variety of materials can be obtained using specific methods.

Influence of Electron Beam Irradiation on Electrical Insulating Properties of PLA with Soft Resin Added †

Polylactic acid (PLA), a bioplastic, is a hard resin, and requires softening in order to be used in electric wire sheaths. A soft resin was added to PLA in order to soften it, but this caused the electric breakdown strength (EB) to decrease. In this study, PLA with soft resin added was irradiated with an electron beam and the influence of the electron beam irradiation on EB was examined. The irradiation dose was set at 100 kGy. At 25 °C, the EB of PLA with no soft resin added decreased due to the irradiation. On the other hand, the EB of PLA with soft resin added showed almost no change due to the irradiation. At 80 °C, the EB of PLA with no soft resin added decreased due to the irradiation, as was the case at 25 °C. On the other hand, the EB of PLA with soft resin added increased due to the irradiation.
