Multifunctional Ionogels Incorporated with Lanthanide (Eu3+, Tb3+) Complexes Covalently Modified Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes

Luminescent lanthanide-containing gelatin/polydextran/laponite nanocomposite double-network hydrogels for processing and sensing applications

Lanthanide-containing nanomaterials have gained significant popularity for their utilization in polymeric networks, enabling the creation of luminescent nanocomposites for advanced applications. In this study, we developed a new type of lanthanide-containing nanocomposite hydrogels by incorporating terbium-containing laponite (Tb3+@Lap) into the networks of polyethyleneimine-modified gelatin/polydextran aldehyde (PG/PDA) through dynamic bonds. The structures and properties of the Tb3+@Lap-containing nanocomposite double-network (ncDN) hydrogels were comprehensively investigated in comparison with the DN hydrogels with a pure polymeric network and the Lap-containing ncDN hydrogels. The PG/PDA/Tb3+@Lap ncDN hydrogels with multiple dynamic bonds (i.e., imine bonds, coordination bonds, hydrogen bonds, and electrostatic interactions) exhibited remarkable characteristics of shear-thinning and self-healing, making them suitable for the construction of hydrogel scaffolds on a macroscale using fabrication techniques such as electrospinning and 3D printing. Moreover, the PG/PDA/Tb3+@Lap ncDN hydrogels have been demonstrated to act as sensitive and selective luminescent sensors for detecting copper ions. Taken together, a versatile lanthanide-containing ncDN hydrogel platform capable of dynamic features is developed for processing and sensing applications.

Ionogels for flexible conductive substrates and their application in biosensing

Ionogels are highly conductive gels made from ionic liquids dispersed in a matrix made of organic or inorganic materials. Ionogels are known for high ionic conductivity, flexibility, high thermal and electrochemical stability. These characteristics make them suitable for sensing and biosensing applications. This review discusses about the two main constituents, ionic liquids and matrix, used to make ionogels and effect of these materials on the characteristics of ionogels. Here, the material properties like mechanical, electrochemical and stability are discussed for both polymer matrix and ionic liquid. We have briefly described about the fabrication methods like 3D printing, sol-gel, blade coating, spin coating, aerosol jet printing etc., used to make films or coating of these ionogels. The advantages and disadvantages of each method are also briefly summarized. Finally, the last section provides a few examples of application of flexible ionogels in areas like wearables, human-machine interface, electronic skin and detection of biological molecules.

Fluorescent SiO2@Tb3+(PET-TEG)3Phen Hybrids as Nucleating Additive for Enhancement of Crystallinity of PET

A hybrid polymer of SiO₂@Tb³⁺(poly(ethylene terephthalate)-tetraglycol)₃ phenanthroline (SiO₂@Tb³⁺(PET-TEG)₃Phen) was synthesized by mixing of inorganic SiO₂ nanoparticles with polymeric segments of PET-TEG, whereas PET-TEG was achieved through multi-step functionalization strategy. Tb³⁺ ions and β-diketonate ligand Phen were added in resulting material. The experimental results demonstrated that it was well blended with PET as a robust additive, and not only promoted the crystallinity, but also possessed excellent luminescence properties. An investigation of the mechanism revealed that the SiO₂ nanoparticles functioned as a crystallization promotor; the Tb³⁺ acted as the fluorescent centre; and the PET-TEG segments played the role of linker and buffer, providing better compatibility of PET matrix with the inorganic component. This work demonstrated that hybrid polymers are appealing as multifunctional additives in the polymer processing and polymer luminescence field.

Novel Chemical Cross-Linked Ionogel Based on Acrylate Terminated Hyperbranched Polymer with Superior Ionic Conductivity for High Performance Lithium-Ion Batteries

A new family of chemical cross-linked ionogel is successfully synthesized by photopolymerization of hyperbranched aliphatic polyester with acrylate terminal groups in an ionic liquid of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate (BMIMBF₄). The microstructure, viscoelastic behavior, mechanical property thermal stability, and ionic conductivities of the ionogels are investigated systematically. The ionogels exhibit high mechanical strength (up to 1.6 MPa) and high mechanical stability even at temperatures up to 200 °C. It is found to be thermally stable up to 371.3 °C and electrochemically stable above 4.3 V. The obtained ionogels show superior ionic conductivity over a wide temperature range (from 1.2 × 10^-3 S cm^-1 at 20 °C up to 5.0 × 10^-2 S cm^-1 at 120 °C). Moreover, the Li/LiFePO₄ batteries based on ionogel electrolyte with LiBF₄ show a higher specific capacity of 153.1 mAhg^-1 and retain 98.1% after 100 cycles, exhibiting very stable charge/discharge behavior with good cycle performance. This work provides a new method for fabrication of novel advanced gel polymer electrolytes for applications in lithium-ion batteries.
