Chemical Synthesis and Characterization of Poly(poly(ethylene glycol) methacrylate)-Grafted CdTe Nanocrystals via RAFT Polymerization for Covalent Immobilization of Adenosine

Surface-Initiated Reversible Addition-Fragmentation Chain Transfer Polymerization (SI-RAFT) to Produce Molecularly Imprinted Polymers on Graphene Oxide for Electrochemical Sensing of Methylparathion

A nonenzymatic redox-responsive sensor was put forward for the detection of methylparathion (MP) by designing globular nanostructures of molecularly imprinted polymers on graphene oxide (GO@MIPs) via surface-initiated reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization (SI-RAFT). Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) studies have confirmed the successful formation of receptor layers of MIPs on RAFT agent-functionalized GO sheets. The electrochemical signal with an amplified current response was attained because of the enhanced diffusion rate of ions at the interface provided by widening the pore size of the MIP film. The analytical response of GO@MIPs, validated by recording square-wave anodic stripping voltammetry (SWASV) at varying MP concentrations, followed the linear response between 0.2 and 200 ng/mL. Under optimized conditions, the sensor exhibited a limit of detection of 4.25 ng/mL with high selectivity over other interfering ions or molecules. The anti-interfering ability and good recovery (%) in food samples directed the use of the proposed sensor toward real-time monitoring and also toward future mimicking of surfaces.

Tailoring Amphiphilic Copolymers for Improved Aqueous Foam Stability

Amphiphilic copolymers of various-molecular-weight (MW) poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) were synthesized via reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. The first PEG series, poly(ethylene glycol)monomethacrylate (PEGMA, average Mn 200 and 400 MW), contained an -OH terminal group, and the second series, poly(ethylene glycol) monomethyl ether monomethacrylate (PEGMMA, average Mn 200, 400, and 1000 MW), possessed an -OCH₃ terminal group. A total of five PEG-functionalized copolymers contained the same hydrophobic monomer, butyl acrylate (BA), and were successfully reproduced via a one-pot synthesis. The resulting PEG-functionalized copolymers provide a systematic trend of properties including surface tension, critical micelle concentration (CMC), cloud point (CP), and foam lifetime based on the average MW of the PEG monomer and final polymer properties. In general, the PEGMA series produced more stable foams with PEGMA200 demonstrating the least change in foam height with time over a 10 min period. The important exception is that at elevated temperatures, the PEGMMA1000 copolymer had longer foam lifetimes. The self-assembling copolymers were characterized by gel permeation chromatography (GPC), ¹H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared (FTIR-ATR), CMC, surface tension, dynamic light scattering (DLS), as a foam using a dynamic foam analyzer (DFA), and foam lifetime at ambient and elevated temperatures. The copolymers described highlight the importance of the PEG monomer MW and terminal end group for surface interaction and final polymer properties for foam stabilization.

Copolymer Reversible Addition-Fragmentation Chain Transfer Synthesis of Polyethylene Glycol (PEG) Functionalized with Hydrophobic Acrylates: A Study of Surface and Foam Properties

A series of amphiphilic statistical copolymers involving poly(ethylene glycol) monomethacrylate (PEGMA, -OH terminated, average Mn 200 molecular weight) and various hydrophobic acrylates were synthesized via reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. The gradient copolymers were characterized by gel-permeation chromatography (GPC), ¹H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR-ATR). Solution properties of the copolymers were investigated utilizing surface tension measurement, dynamic light-scattering (DLS), as well as foam analysis using a dynamic foam analyzer (DFA). The PEG-functionalized copolymers showed a systematic trend depending on the hydrophobic moiety in properties including surface tension, critical micelle concentration (CMC), foam lifetime, and liquid drainage from the foam. Copolymers with alkyl-acrylates exhibited the best foam lifetime, demonstrating that the choice of hydrophobic moiety is crucial for foam stability. The PEG-functionalized materials described are considered promising additives for foam-stability purposes.

Monochelic Versus Telechelic Poly(Methyl Methacrylate) as a Matrix for Photoluminescent Nanocomposites with Quantum Dots

Nanocomposites based on CdSe or CdSe/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) of different molecular weights and functionality were synthesized by ligand exchange of oleic acid with RAFT-based PMMA. The successful ligand exchange was confirmed by dynamic light scattering in combination with the approach "macromolecules-ghosts" and transmission electron microscopy. Comparative study of mono- and telechelics of PMMA revealed the similarities and differences in their behavior in formation of complexes with QDs and the optical properties of the corresponding nanocomposites. Telechelics exhibited higher efficiency in the complex formation and seemed to be promising candidates for the construction of devices based on QDs and polymer matrix for optical applications.

Recent Advances in Nanotechnology: A Novel Therapeutic System for the Treatment of Alzheimer's Disease

A amyloid-β (Aβ) plaque formation in the brain is known to be the root cause of Alzheimer's disease (AD), which affects the behavior, memory, and cognitive ability in humans. The brain starts undergoing changes several years before the actual appearance of the symptoms. Nanotechnology could prove to be an alternative strategy for treating the disease effectively. It encompasses the diagnosis as well as the therapeutic aspect using validated biomarkers and nano-based drug delivery systems, respectively. A nano-based therapy may provide an alternate strategy, wherein one targets the protofibrillar amyloid-β (Aβ) structures, and this is followed by their disaggregation as random coils. Conventional/routine drug therapies are inefficient in crossing the blood-brain barrier; however, this hurdle can be overcome with the aid of nanoparticles. The present review highlights the various challenges in the diagnosis and treatment of AD. Meticulous and collaborative research using nanotherapeutic systems could provide remarkable breakthroughs in the early-stage diagnosis and therapy of AD.
