Facile Preparation of EVOH-Based Amphoteric Ion Exchange Membrane Using Radiation Grafting Technique: A Preliminary Investigation on Its Application for Vanadium Redox Flow Battery

Efficient removal of p-nitrophenol from water by imidazolium ionic liquids functionalized cellulose microsphere

Removing p-nitrophenol (PNP) from water resources is crucial due to its significant threat to the environment and human health. Herein, imidazolium ionic liquids with short/long alkyl chain ([C2VIm]Br and [C8VIm]Br) modified cellulose microspheres (MCC-[C2VIm]Br and MCC-[C8VIm]Br) were synthesized by radiation method. To examine the impact of adsorbent hydrophilicity on adsorption performance, batch and column experiments were conducted for PNP adsorption. The MCC-[C2VIm]Br and MCC-[C8VIm]Br, with an equivalent molar import amount of ionic liquids, exhibited maximum adsorption capacities of 190.84 mg/g and 191.20 mg/g for PNP, respectively, and the adsorption equilibrium was reached within 30 min. Both adsorbents displayed exceptional reusability. Integrating the findings from XPS and FTIR analyses, and AgNO3 identification, the suggested adsorption mechanism posited that the adsorbents engaged with PNP through ion exchange, hydrogen bonds and π-π stacking. Remarkably, the hydrophobic MCC-[C8VIm]Br exhibited superior selectivity for PNP than the hydrophilic MCC-[C2VIm]Br, while had little effect on adsorption capacity and rate. MCC-[C8VIm]Br-2 with high grafting yield increased the adsorption capacity to 327.87 mg/g. Moreover, MCC-[C8VIm]Br-2 demonstrated efficient PNP removal from various real water samples, and column experiments illustrated its selective capture of PNP from groundwater. The promising adsorption performance indicates that MCC-[C8VIm]Br-2 holds potential for PNP removal from wastewater.

Nanocomposite Membranes for PEM-FCs: Effect of LDH Introduction on the Physic-Chemical Performance of Various Polymer Matrices

This is a comparative study to clarify the effect of the introduction of layered double hydroxide (LDH) into various polymer matrices. One perfluorosulfonic acid polymer, i.e., Nafion, and two polyaromatic polymers such as sulfonated polyether ether ketone (sPEEK) and sulfonated polysulfone (sPSU), were used for the preparation of nanocomposite membranes at 3 wt.% of LDH loading. Thereafter, the PEMs were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) for their microstructural and thermomechanical features, whereas water dynamics and proton conductivity were investigated by nuclear magnetic resonance (PFG and T₁) and EIS spectroscopies, respectively. Depending on the hosting matrix, the LDHs can simply provide additional hydrophilic sites or act as physical crosslinkers. In the latter case, an impressive enhancement of both dimensional stability and electrochemical performance was observed. While pristine sPSU exhibited the lowest proton conductivity, the sPSU/LDH nanocomposite was able to compete with Nafion, yielding a conductivity of 122 mS cm^-1 at 120 °C and 90% RH with an activation energy of only 8.7 kJ mol^-1. The outcome must be ascribed to the mutual and beneficial interaction of the LDH nanoplatelets with the functional groups of sPSU, therefore the choice of the appropriate filler is pivotal for the preparation of highly-performing composites.

TiO2 Containing Hybrid Composite Polymer Membranes for Vanadium Redox Flow Batteries

In recent years, vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFB) have captured immense attraction in electrochemical energy storage systems due to their long cycle life, flexibility, high-energy efficiency, time, and reliability. In VRFB, polymer membranes play a significant role in transporting protons for current transmission and act as barriers between positive and negative electrodes/electrolytes. Commercial polymer membranes (such as Nafion) are the widely used IEM in VRFBs due to their outstanding chemical stability and proton conductivity. However, the membrane cost and increased vanadium ions permeability limit its commercial application. Therefore, various modified perfluorinated and non-perfluorinated membranes have been developed. This comprehensive review primarily focuses on recent developments of hybrid polymer composite membranes with inorganic TiO₂ nanofillers for VRFB applications. Hence, various fabrications are performed in the membrane with TiO₂ to alter their physicochemical properties for attaining perfect IEM. Additionally, embedding the -SO₃H groups by sulfonation on the nanofiller surface enhances membrane proton conductivity and mechanical strength. Incorporating TiO₂ and modified TiO₂ (sTiO₂, and organic silica modified TiO₂) into Nafion and other non-perfluorinated membranes (sPEEK and sPI) has effectively influenced the polymer membrane properties for better VRFB performances. This review provides an overall spotlight on the impact of TiO₂-based nanofillers in polymer matrix for VRFB applications.

Characterization and Kinetic Studies of Poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) Polymer Inclusion Membrane for the Malachite Green Extraction

Textile industry effluent contains a high amount of toxic colorants. These dyes are carcinogenic and threats to the environment and living beings. In this study, poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-co-HFP) was used as the based polymer for PIMs with bis-(2-ethylhexyl) phosphate (B2EHP) and dioctyl phthalate (DOP) as the carrier and plasticizer. The fabricated PIMs were employed to extract the cation dye (Malachite Green; MG) from the feeding phase. PIMs were also characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscope (AFM), contact angle, water uptake, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and ions exchange capacity. The performance of the PIMs was investigated under various conditions such as percentage of carrier and initial dye concentration. With permeability and flux values of 0.1188 cm/min and 1.1913 mg cm/min, PIM produced with 18% w/w PVDF-co-HFP, 21% w/w B2EHP, 1% w/w DOP and 40% w/w THF and was able to achieve more than 97% of MG extraction. The experimental data were then fitted with a pseudo-second-order (PSO) model, and the calculated R2 value was ~0.99. This shows that the data has a good fit with the PSO model. PIM is a potential alternative technology in textile industry effluent treatment; however, the right formulation is crucial for developing a highly efficient membrane.

The decontamination of radioactive TcO₄^- from nuclear wastes is becoming increasingly crucial for spent nuclear fuel reprocessing and environmental remediation. In this work, a series of ionic liquid-immobilized silica-based adsorbents (SVIL-Cn, n = 1, 4, 8) were newly synthesized using the radiation-induced grafting of 4-vinylbenzyl chloride onto silanized silica and subsequent functionalization with 1-methylimidazole, 1-butylimidazole, or 1-octylimidazole. The synthesis conditions such as the solvent, absorbed dose, and monomer concentration were investigated in detail, and the resulting adsorbents were characterized by elemental analysis, FT-IR, SEM, and TGA. In batch experiments, the adsorbents exhibited a high ReO₄^- (a nonradioactive surrogate of TcO₄^-) removal efficiency over a wide pH range (3 ~ 8), and SVIL-C1 showed a maximum adsorption capacity of 70.62 mg g^-1 towards ReO₄^-. In addition, their adsorption performance barely changed after 800 kGy radiation. The column experiments for treating simulated radioactive wastewater showed that the SVIL-Cn adsorbents could selectively separate TcO₄^-/ReO₄^- from a variety of fission products, and they could be recycled four times with negligible capacity loss. Lastly, XPS and FT-IR analysis confirmed that the adsorption proceeded via an ion-exchange mechanism. The results showed that these adsorbents are suitable for the efficient removal of TcO₄^-/ReO₄^- from radioactive wastewater with complex compositions.

Nonconjugated Biocompatible Macromolecular Luminogens for Sensing and Removals of Fe(III) and Cu(II): DFT Studies on Selective Coordination(s) and On-Off Sensing

This work reports the design and synthesis of two nonaromatic biocompatible macromolecular luminogens, i.e., 2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate-co-2-(dimethylamino)ethyl 3-(N-(methylol)acrylamido)-2-methylpropanoate-co-N-(methylol)acrylamide/DMAEMA-co-DMAENMAMP-co-NMA (P1) and methacrylic acid-co-3-(N-(methylol)acrylamido)-2-methylpropanoic acid-co-N-(methylol)acrylamide/MEA-co-NMAMPA-co-NMA (P2), prepared through in situ anchored acrylamido-ester/DMAENMAMP and acrylamido-acid/NMAMPA third comonomers, respectively, in a facile polymerization of two non-luminous monomers in water medium to circumvent the drawbacks related to aggregation-caused quenching of aromatic luminogens. The structures of P1/P2, in situ anchored comonomers, fluorophores, N-branching associated n-π* interactions, and hydrogen bonding assisted aggregation-enhanced emissions are comprehended by nuclear magnetic resonance, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), ultraviolet-visible, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), dynamic light scattering (DLS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), fluorescence lifetime, and fluorescence imaging. P1 and P2 are appropriate for sensitive detections/exclusions of Fe(III)/Cu(II) and cell-imaging. The intrinsic fluorescence, on-off sensing, selective coordinations of Fe(III) and Cu(II) with fluorophores, emission quenching mechanisms, and removals of Fe(III) and Cu(II) are investigated by DFT/NTO analyses of P1/P2 and Fe(III)-P1 and Cu(II)-P2 complexes, XPS, and isotherms and kinetics parameters. The excellent biocompatibilities, comparable limit of detections, i.e., 1.70 × 10^-7 and 1.59 × 10^-7 [m], and higher adsorption capacities, i.e., 77.25 and 154.13 mg g^-1 , at low ppm; 303 K; and pH = 7 compel P1/P2 to be acceptable for multipurpose applications.

DFO@EVOH and 3,4-HP@EVOH: Towards New Polymeric Sorbents for Iron(III)

The paper presents the synthesis and preliminary characterization of two novel solid-phase sorbents for iron(III), resulting from the functionalization of ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer (EVOH) with deferoxamine, DFO (DFO@EVOH), and a novel tripodal 3-hydroxy-4-pyridinone, named 3,4-HP (3,4-HP@EVOH). DFO and 3,4-HP have been covalently bonded to EVOH, using carbonyldiimidazole as a coupling agent. Before their use as Fe(III) sorbents, they were warm-pressed to obtain a thin film. Polymers have been characterized by conventional physico-chemical techniques; furthermore, the sorption properties towards Fe(III) were investigated. The physico-chemical characterization of the new solid-state devices demonstrates the effective linkage of the two receptors on the polymeric support. Despite a relatively low sorption capacity for both materials, the stoichiometry and the complexation constants of Fe(III)/DFO@EVOH and Fe(III)/3,4-HP@EVOH are in pretty good agreement with those obtained for the same ligands in aqueous solutions.

Amphoteric Ion Exchange Membranes Prepared by Preirradiation-Induced Emulsion Graft Copolymerization for Vanadium Redox Flow Battery

A series of poly(vinylidene difluoride)-based amphoteric ion exchange membranes (AIEMs) were prepared by preirradiation-induced graft copolymerization of styrene and dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate in an aqueous emulsion media followed by solution casting, sulfonation, and protonation. The effects of absorbed dose and comonomer concentration on grafting yield (GY) were investigated. The highest GY of 44.5% at a low comonomer concentration of 0.9 M could be achieved. FTIR, TGA, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) confirmed the successful grafting and sulfonation of the as-prepared AIEMs. Properties of the AIEMs such as water uptake, ion exchange capacity (IEC), ionic conductivity, and crossover behavior of VO²⁺ ions prepared by this novel technique were systematically investigated and compared with those of the commercial Nafion 115 membrane. It was found that at a GY of 28.4%, the AIEMs showed higher IEC and conductivity, lower permeability of VO²⁺ ions, and a longer time to maintain open circuit voltage than Nafion 115, which was attributed to their high GY and elaborate amphoteric structure. Consequently, this work has paved the way for the development of green and low-cost AIEMs with good performance for vanadium redox flow battery applications.
