Modification of NFA-Conjugated Bridges with Symmetric Structures for High-Efficiency Non-Fullerene PSCs

End-capped engineering of Quinoxaline core-based non-fullerene acceptor materials with improved power conversion efficiency

Improving the light-harvesting efficiency and boosting open circuit voltage are crucial challenges for enhancing the efficiency of organic solar cells. This work introduces seven new molecules (SA1-SA7) to upgrade the optoelectronic and photovoltaic properties of Q-C-F molecule-based solar cells. All recently designed molecules have the same alkyl-substituted Quinoxaline core and CPDT donor but vary in the end-capped acceptor subunits. All the investigated molecules have revealed superior properties than the model (R) by having absorbance ranging from 681 nm to 782 nm in the gaseous medium while 726 nm-861 nm in chloroform solvent, with the lowest band gap ranging from 1.91 to 2.19 eV SA1 molecule demonstrated the highest λmax (861 nm) in chloroform solvent and the lowest band gap (1.91 eV). SA2 molecule has manifested highest dipole moment (4.5089 D), lower exciton binding energy in gaseous (0.33 eV) and chloroform solvent (0.47 eV), and lower charge mobility of hole (0.0077693) and electron (0.0042470). At the same time, SA7 showed the highest open circuit voltage (1.56 eV) and fill factor (0.9166) due to solid electron-pulling acceptor moieties. From these supportive outcomes, it is inferred that our computationally investigated molecules may be promising candidates to be used in advanced versions of OSCs in the upcoming period.

Theoretical exploration of diverse electron-deficient core and terminal groups in A–DA′D–A type non-fullerene acceptors for organic solar cells

The influences triggered by the structurally diverse electron-withdrawing terminal group and fuse-ring electron-deficient core on the performance of NFAs OSCs are comprehensively investigated by using DFT, TD-DFT and Marcus charge transfer theory.

Comparing Donor- and Acceptor-Originated Exciton Dynamics in Non-Fullerene Acceptor Blend Polymeric Systems

Non-fullerene type acceptors (NFA) have gained attention owing to their spectral extension that enables efficient solar energy capturing. For instance, the solely NFA-mediated absorbing region contributes to the photovoltaic power conversion efficiency (PCE) as high as ~30%, in the case of the solar cells comprised of fluorinated materials, PBDB-T-2F and ITIC-4F. This implies that NFAs must be able to serve as electron donors, even though they are conventionally assigned as electron acceptors. Therefore, the pathways of NFA-originated excitons need to be explored by the spectrally resolved photovoltaic characters. Additionally, excitation wavelength dependent transient absorption spectroscopy (TAS) was performed to trace the nature of the NFA-originated excitons and polymeric donor-originated excitons separately. Unique origin-dependent decay behaviors of the blend system were found by successive comparing of those solutions and pristine films which showed a dramatic change upon film formation. With the obtained experimental results, including TAS, a possible model describing origin-dependent decay pathways was suggested in the framework of reaction kinetics. Finally, numerical simulations based on the suggested model were performed to verify the feasibility, achieving reasonable correlation with experimental observables. The results should provide deeper insights in to renewable energy strategies by using novel material classes that are compatible with flexible electronics.

Effect of Polymerization on the Charge-Transfer Mechanism in the One (Two)-Photon Absorption Process of D-A-Type Triphenylamine Derivatives

To investigate the effect of polymerization (n = 1, 2, 3, and 4) on the charge-transfer (CT) mechanisms in the one (two)-photon absorption (OPA and TPA) process of D-A-type triphenylamine derivatives, charge density difference is used to graphically represent the CT characteristics. A transition density matrix is utilized to reveal the direction of CT on different groups quantitatively. With the n increasing, electrons are mainly transferred between the groups in the middle position of the molecular chain during OPA and TPA processes. Simulated results show that the energy gap and excitation energy have a good linear relationship with the reciprocal of the polymerization degree. Importantly, the polymerization effect can effectively increase the electronic transmission capability, TPA performance, and second hyperpolarizability. Besides, the simplified sum over state model reveals the variation factor of the TPA cross-section and the second static hyperpolarizability. The McRae formula and Bakhshiev formula are used to estimate the difference of dipole moments, which is an important parameter of the second hyperpolarizability. The comprehensive analysis of the nonlinear optical (NLO) parameters of triphenylamine derivatives can provide some significant guidance for molecular design and improve the NLO performance of D-A molecular materials. Also, the thermodynamic parameters can provide some theoretical supports for solving practical problems.

Optoelectronic properties of diathiafulvalene-functionalized diketopyrrolopyrrole-fullerene molecular dyad

Single component molecular dyad donor-acceptor junction is an important type of organic solar cells. Understanding the optoelectronic properties of molecular dyad plays the critical role to develop active layer materials for such kind of solar cells. Here, diathiafulvalene-functionalized diketopyrrolopyrrole-fullerene (DFDPP-Ful) was selected as the representative system, and the geometries, electronic structures and excitation properties of DFDPP-Ful monomer and dimer were systematically investigated based on extensive quantum chemistry calculations. The transition configurations and molecular orbitals show that the effective electron donor and acceptor are DFDPP and fullerene moieties, respectively. It also found the light harvesting is dominated by local excitation in DFDPP moiety. Meanwhile, the hybridization and quasi-degeneration between charge transfer (CT) and local excitation exist. The dimer data suggest that the increased excited states contribute to the expanding of absorption spectra, and the excitations exhibit both the intermolecular and intra-molecular CTs. Also, the remarkable CT energy differences among the different dimer models for the lowest CT excited states support the strong interface and energy disorder in such system. Therefore, the suggestions for developing molecular dyad of single component organic solar cells would be the combination of increasing light absorption, enhancing CT and local excitation hybridization, as well as suppressing energy and interface disorder by the aid of molecular design.

Synthesis and Optoelectronic Characterization of Perylene Diimide-Quinoline Based Small Molecules

Perylene diimide (PDI) is one of the most studied functional dyes due to their structural versatility and fine tuning of the materials properties. Core substituted PDIs are prominent n-type semiconductor materials that could be used as non-fullerene acceptors in organic photovoltaics. Herein, we develop versatile organic building blocks based on PDI by decorating the PDI core with quinoline groups. Styryl and hydroxy phenyl mono and difunctionalized molecules were prepared using mono-nitro and dibromo bay substituted PDIs by Suzuki coupling with the respective boronic acid derivatives. A novel methodology using nitro-PDI under Suzuki coupling conditions as an electrophile partner was successfully tested. Furthermore, the PDI derivatives were used for the synthesis of soluble, electron accepting small molecules combining PDI with weak electron withdrawing quinoline derivatives. The new molecules presented wide absorbance in the visible spectrum from 450 to almost 700 nm while their LUMO levels and their energy levels are in the range of −3.8 to −4.2 eV.

Vinyl Phosphate-Functionalized, Magnetic, Molecularly-Imprinted Polymeric Microspheres' Enrichment and Carbon Dots' Fluorescence-Detection of Organophosphorus Pesticide Residues

The rapid detection of organophosphorus pesticide residues in food is crucial to food safety. One type of novel, magnetic, molecularly-imprinted polymeric microsphere (MMIP) was prepared with vinyl phosphate and 1-octadecene as a collection of dual functional monomers, which were screened by Gaussian09W molecular simulation. MMIPs were used to enrich organic phosphorus, which then detected by fluorescence quenching in vinyl phosphate-modified carbon dots (CDs@VPA) originated from anhydrous citric acid. MMIPs and CDs@VPA were characterized by TEM, particle size analysis, FT-IR, VSM, XPS, adsorption experiments, and fluorescence spectrophotometry in turn. Through the fitting data from experiment and Gaussian quantum chemical calculations, the molecular recognition properties and the mechanism of fluorescence detection between organophosphorus pesticides and CDs@VPA were also investigated. The results indicated that the MMIPs could specifically recognize and enrich triazophos with the saturated adsorption capacity 0.226 mmol g^-1, the imprinting factor 4.59, and the limit of recognition as low as 0.0006 mmol L^-1. Under optimal conditions, the CDs@VPA sensor has shown an extensive fluorescence property with a LOD of 0.0015 mmol L^-1 and the linear range from 0.0035 mmol L^-1 to 0.20 mmol L^-1 (R² = 0.9988) at 390 nm. The mechanism of fluorescence detection of organic phosphorus with CDs@VPA sensor might be attributable to hydrogen bonds formed between heteroatom O, N, S, or P, and the O-H group, which led to fluorescent quenching. Meanwhile, HN-C=O and Si-O groups in CDs@VPA system might contribute to cause excellent blue photoluminescence. The fluorescence sensor was thorough successfully employed to the detection of triazophos in cucumber samples, illustrating its tremendous value towards food sample analysis in complex matrix.
