Deformation Instabilities and Lamellae Fragmentation during Deformation of Cross-linked Polyethylene

Influence of plane-strain compression on the microstructure and tribological behavior of GUR 1050 UHMWPE

Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) has been used as a bearing surface in orthopedic implants due to its outstanding physical and mechanical properties. Modifications in the structure of the polymer have a direct effect on its wear. In this work, plane-strain compression in a channel die was applied to induce microstructural changes in specimens of UHMWPE GUR 1050. These structural changes were characterized using a combined approach involving Raman spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy. These qualitative and quantitative characterization resulted in a valuable understanding of the changes in the material microstructure when subjected to plastic deformation. A molecular non-uniform alignment of the UHMWPE molecules, with fragmentation and kinking of polymer lamellae, was observed in the direction of material flow, perpendicular to the compressive load direction, following an inhomogeneous strain field generated by the mechanical compression. The microstructural analyses revealed an increased crystalline content and decreased intermediate phase while amorphous phase content remained unchanged, in all the regions of the deformed specimen. The tribological performance, evaluated by the scratch resistance force, decreased along the material flow direction and increased along the load direction in the deformed polymer compared to that of the uncompressed polymer. Plane-strain compression was able to modify the polymer microstructure, introducing directional anisotropy in its tribological behavior that can impact the wear performance of the material.

Plastic Deformation of High Density Polyethylene with Extended-Chain Crystal Morphology

Samples of polyethylene with extended-chain crystal morphology, obtained by crystallization under high pressure, were subjected to uniaxial compression to various strains. Accompanying structural changes were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy. At the true strain of e = 0.2−0.3 the microbuckling instability was observed in longitudinally loaded lamellae, resulting in the formation of angular kinks. This induced a rapid reorientation of the lamellae, facilitating their further deformation by crystallographic slip. Microbuckling instability was found to occur earlier than in samples with folded-chain crystal morphology (e = 0.3−0.4) due to a smaller ratio of the amorphous to crystalline layer thickness. SEM observations demonstrated that the microbuckling instability begins with small undulation in long lamellae. Sharp angular lamellar kinks develop from the initial undulation through intense plastic deformation by crystallographic slip along the chain direction. The same slip system was found to operate throughout the kink, including the tip region as well as both limbs. In contrast to thin folded-chain lamellae that often undergo fragmentation during deformation, the thick extended-chain lamellae deform stably by chain slip and retain their continuity up to high strains, e > 1.6. This stability of deformation is related to the large thickness of extended-chain lamellae.

Current State-of-the-Art in Membrane Formation from Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene

One of the materials that attracts attention as a potential material for membrane formation is ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE). One potential material for membrane formation is ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE). The present review summarizes the results of studies carried out over the last 30 years in the field of preparation, modification and structure and property control of membranes made from ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene. The review also presents a classification of the methods of membrane formation from this polymer and analyzes the conventional (based on the analysis of incomplete phase diagrams) and alternative (based on the analysis of phase diagrams supplemented by a boundary line reflecting the polymer swelling degree dependence on temperature) physicochemical concepts of the thermally induced phase separation (TIPS) method used to prepare UHMWPE membranes. It also considers the main ways to control the structure and properties of UHMWPE membranes obtained by TIPS and the original variations of this method. This review discusses the current challenges in UHMWPE membrane formation, such as the preparation of a homogeneous solution and membrane shrinkage. Finally, the article speculates about the modification and application of UHMWPE membranes and further development prospects. Thus, this paper summarizes the achievements in all aspects of UHMWPE membrane studies.

Graphene Nanoplatelets' Effect on the Crystallization, Glass Transition, and Nanomechanical Behavior of Poly(ethylene 2,5-furandicarboxylate) Nanocomposites

Poly(ethylene 2,5-furandicarboxylate) (PEF) nanocomposites reinforced with various content of graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) were synthesized in situ in this work. PEF is a widely known biobased polyester with promising physical properties and is considered as the sustainable counterpart of PET. Despite its exceptional gas barrier and mechanical properties, PEF presents with a low crystallization rate. In this context, a small number of GNPs were incorporated into the material to facilitate the nucleation and overall crystallization of the matrix. Kinetic analysis of both the cold and melt crystallization processes of the prepared materials was achieved by means of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The prepared materials’ isothermal crystallization from the glass and melt states was studied using the Avrami and Hoffman–Lauritzen theories. The Dobreva method was applied for the non-isothermal DSC measurements to calculate the nucleation efficiency of the GNPs on the PEF matrix. Furthermore, Vyazovkin’s isoconversional method was employed to estimate the effective activation energy values of the amorphous materials’ glass transition. Finally, the nanomechanical properties of the amorphous and semicrystalline PEF materials were evaluated via nanoindentation measurements. It is shown that the GNPs facilitate the crystallization process through heterogeneous nucleation and, at the same time, improve the nanomechanical behavior of PEF, with the semicrystalline samples presenting with the larger enhancements.

Deformation of Poly-l-lactid acid (PLLA) under Uniaxial Tension and Plane-Strain Compression

The ability of PLLA, either amorphous or semicrystalline, to plastic deformation to large strain was investigated in a wide temperature range (Td = 70-140 °C). Active deformation mechanisms have been identified and compared for two different deformation modes-uniaxial drawing and plane-strain compression. The initially amorphous PLLA was capable of significant deformation in both tension and plane-strain compression. In contrast, the samples of crystallized PLLA were found brittle in tensile, whereas they proved to be ductile and capable of high-strain deformation when deformed in plane-strain compression. The main deformation mechanism identified in amorphous PLLA was the orientation of chains due to plastic flow, followed by strain-induced crystallization occurring at the true strain above e = 0.5. The oriented chains in amorphous phase were then transformed into oriented mesophase and/or oriented crystals. An upper temperature limit for mesophase formation was found below Td = 90 °C. The amount of mesophase formed in this process did not exceed 5 wt.%. An additional mesophase fraction was generated at high strains from crystals damaged by severe deformation. After the formation of the crystalline phase, further deformation followed the mechanisms characteristic for the semicrystalline polymer. Interlamellar slip supported by crystallographic chain slip has been identified as the major deformation mechanism in semicrystalline PLLA. It was found that the contribution of crystallographic slip increased notably with the increase in the deformation temperature. The most probable active crystallographic slip systems were (010)[001], (100)[001] or (110)[001] slip systems operating along the chain direction. At high temperatures (Td = 115-140 °C), the α→β crystal transformation was additionally observed, leading to the formation of a small fraction of β crystals.

Microbuckling Instability and the Second Yield during the Deformation of Semicrystalline Polyethylene

Deformation instabilities, such as microbuckling or lamellar fragmentation due to slip localization, play a very important role in the deformation of semicrystalline polymers, although it still not well explored. Such instabilities often appear necessary to modify the deformation path and facilitate strain accommodation in an energy-minimizing manner. In this work, microbuckling instability was investigated using partially oriented, injection-molded (IM) samples of high-density polyethylene, deformed by a plane-strain compression. Deformed samples were probed by SEM, X-ray (small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering: SAXS, WAXS), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). It was found that microbuckling instability, followed quickly by the formation of lamellar kinks, occurred in high-density polyethylene (HDPE) at a true strain of about e = 0.3–0.4, mainly in those lamellar stacks which were initially oriented parallel to the compression direction. This phenomenon was observed with scanning electron microscopy, especially in the oriented skin layers of IM specimens, where a chevron morphology resulting from lamellae microbuckling/kinking was evidenced. Macroscopically, this instability manifested as the so-called “second macroscopic yield” in the form of a hump in the true stress–true strain curve. Microbuckling instability can have a profound effect on the subsequent stages of the deformation process, as well as the resulting structure. This is particularly important in deforming well-oriented lamellar structures—e.g., in drawing pre-oriented films of a semicrystalline polymer, a process commonly used in many technologies.

Morphology and Plastic Yielding of Ultrahigh Molecular Weight Polyethylene

The structure, morphology, and mechanical properties of two compression-molded grades of ultrahigh-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) and, for comparison, one conventional linear polyethylene (HDPE) were studied. Compression molding resulted in some preferred orientation of lamellae in the compression direction in UHMWPE samples, while no preferred orientation in HDPE. The mean crystal thickness estimated from the size distribution agrees better with those obtained from small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and mechanical yield data than the thickness determined from the melting peak temperature. Microscopic examination of microtomed and etched UHMWPE samples showed that the lamellae are in the form of platelets with the width and length in the range of 300–700 nm. The lamellae radiate from primary nuclei forming small embryonal spherulites; their radial growth ends at 0.3–0.7 μm from the center. There is no evidence of branching and secondary nucleation from those primary lamellae. Because the lamellae are radially ordered, there is no parallel stacking of lamellae. Samples were subjected to deformation by plane-strain compression at a constant true strain rate. In axial UHMWPE samples, where lamellae were preferentially oriented along the loading direction, the second yield was clearly observed. The second yield was found to be related to the deformation instability leading to kinking of lamellae oriented initially along the loading direction. Kinking was clearly shown by SAXS and microscopic observation of microtomed and etched samples. No cooperativity of kinking was observed because the lamellae are arranged in small spherulites and not parallel in stacks. The stress–strain curves were fitted with model curves assuming crystal plasticity and network elasticity in the amorphous component. The effective density of the molecular network within the amorphous phase depended on the molecular weight of UHMWPE.

Recent advances in post-stretching processing of polymer films with in situ synchrotron radiation X-ray scattering

The stretch-induced structural evolution mechanism is a long-standing scientific question in the post-stretching processing of polymer films. X-ray scattering, especially a combination of small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS/WAXS), provides a powerful method to study the hierarchical structure of polymer films. Recent advances in synchrotron radiation (SR) light sources and detection techniques allow one to measure the structural evolution of polymer films during post-stretching processing in real time with ultrahigh time resolution, which benefits the understanding on this topic. This review summarizes some recent investigations on post-stretching processing of polymer films, which combine in situ X-ray scattering techniques with purposely designed tensile apparatus in terms of three aspects: uniaxial stretching, biaxial stretching and stretching with chemical reactions. Concerning the polymer bulk, traditional deformation mechanisms like stretch-induced crystallization (SIC), crystal slipping, phase transition and melting-recrystallization are discussed for the uniaxial and biaxial post-stretching of polymer films. New deformation models have been developed to focus on the structural evolution on the length scale of lamellar stacks, which consider the potential microphase separation of the interlamellar amorphous phase and microbuckling. For solution systems, the coupled effects of the mechanical work from external force and the chemical potential from possible chemical reactions are taken into account for the structural evolution during stretching in solution. Roadmaps of structural and morphological evolution in the processing parameter space (i.e., temperature, stress, strain and the concentration of additive in the bath solution) are eventually constructed for precursor films. The accumulation of a structural evolution database for post-stretching processing of polymer films can be expected to provide a helpful guide for industrial processing for high-performance polymers in the near future.
