High-Precision Monitoring of Average Molecular Weight of Polyethylene Wax from Waste High-Density Polyethylene

Polyethylene terephthalate conversion into liquid fuel by its co-pyrolysis with low- and high-density polyethylene employing scrape aluminium as catalyst

The co-pyrolysis of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) with low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and high-density polyethylene (HDPE) was carried out in a batch steel pyrolyzer in order to convert the PET into pyrolysis oil as its pyrolysis alone resulted in wax and gases. The study also aimed to increase the aromatic content of pyrolysis oil by the interaction of degradation fragments of linear chains of LDPE and HDPE with the benzene ring of PET during the pyrolysis. The reaction conditions were optimized for a higher yield of pyrolysis oil which were found to be 500 °C pyrolysis temperature with a heating rate of 0.5 °Cs-1, 1 h reaction time and 20 g of the initial mass of polymer mixture having 20% PET, 40% LDPE and 40% HDPE. Waste aluminium particles were applied as an economical catalyst in the process. The thermal co-pyrolysis yielded 8% pyrolysis oil, 32.3 wax, 39.7 wt% gases and 20% coke while the catalytic co-pyrolysis produced 30.2% pyrolysis oil, 4.2% wax, 53.6 wt% gases and 12% coke. The fractional distillation of catalytic oil resulted in 46% gasoline range oil, 31% kerosene range oil and 23% diesel range oil. These fractions resembled the standard fuels in terms of their fuel properties as well as FT-IR spectra. The GC-MS analysis revealed that the catalytic co-pyrolysis favoured the formation of relatively short-chain hydrocarbons with olefins and isoparaffins as major components while the thermal co-pyrolysis formed long-chain paraffins. The naphthenes and aromatics were also found in higher amounts in the catalytic oil compared with the thermal oil.

Sensitivity Analysis of Thermal Degradation of Plastic Waste Using Statistically Assumed Exponential Factors and Activation Energies

The rise in the production of plastic waste has prompted the exploration of various recovery options instead of landfilling, burning, and other unethical ways of decomposing. The experimentally generated rate constants for the thermal processing of plastic waste do not yield enough liquid fuels and gases for commercial-scale usage. It is imperative to predict kinetic rate constants statistically using an appropriate combination of activation energies (E _a) and frequency factors (A _o) for the optimized thermal valorization of plastic waste. This approach also assists in controlling the selectivity and quantity of the pyrolysis products. A statistical kinetic model was tested to find the best combination of rate constants from different combinations of E _a and A _o to pyrolyze the high-density polyethylene. Two series of E _a and A _o were first assumed using R software. These series were then used to predict kinetic rate constants and analyze their sensitivity independently using MATLAB. The rate constants were varied from their originally predicted values during the sensitivity analysis. It was found that the rate constant k(7) dominated the other predicted rate constants where high oil and gas yields were concerned. The gas yield increased from lower to higher extreme positions in the range of 60%-74% with the first series and from 65% to 81% with the second series. The maximum oil content was found around 74% and 65% with the first series and second series, respectively.

Effects of Waste Expanded Polypropylene as Recycled Matrix on the Flexural, Impact, and Heat Deflection Temperature Properties of Kenaf Fiber/Polypropylene Composites

Waste Expanded polypropylene (EPP) was utilized as recycled matrix for kenaf fiber-reinforced polypropylene (PP) composites produced using chopped kenaf fibers and crushed EPP waste. The flexural properties, impact strength, and heat deflection temperature (HDT) of kenaf fiber/PP composites were highly enhanced by using waste EPP, compared to those by using virgin PP. The flexural modulus and strength of the composites with waste EPP were 98% and 55% higher than those with virgin PP at the same kenaf contents, respectively. The Izod impact strength and HDT were 31% and 12% higher with waste EPP than with virgin PP, respectively. The present study indicates that waste EPP would be feasible as recycled matrix for replacing conventional PP matrix in natural fiber composites.
