New Nanohybrid Based on Hydrolyzed Polyacrylamide and Silica Nanoparticles: Morphological, Structural and Thermal Properties

Effect of a SILICA/HPAM Nanohybrid on Heavy Oil Recovery and Treatment: Experimental and Simulation Study

The addition of nanoparticles has been presented as an alternative approach to counteract the degradation of polymeric solutions for enhanced oil recovery. In this context, a nanohybrid (NH34) of partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide (MW ∼12 MDa) and nanosilica modified with 2% 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (nSiO2-APTES) was synthesized and evaluated. NH34 was characterized by using dynamic light scattering, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. Fluid-fluid tests assessed its viscosifying power, mechanical stability, filterability, and emulsion behavior. Rock-fluid tests were carried out to determine the nanohybrid's adsorption in porous media, the inaccessible pore volume (IPV), and the resistance (RF) and residual resistance factors (RRF). These tests were conducted under the conditions of a Colombian field. NH34 results were compared with four (4) commercial polymers (P34, P88, P51, and PA2). The viscosifying power of NH34 was observed to be similar to that of the four commercial polymers at a lower concentration, but it exhibits more resistance to mechanical and chemical degradation. The evaluation of the emulsion behavior showed that the nanohybrid neither changed the dehydration process nor altered the crude oil viscosity, favoring its extraction at the wellhead. However, the water clarification treatment must be adjusted because the oil and grease contents and turbidity increase with the residual concentration of NH34. Incremental oil recovery factors obtained by numerical simulation (compared to waterflooding) were P51 (5.5%) > P34 (4.9%) > P88 (4.8%) > NH34 (2.6%) > PA2 (0.9%). The polymers P51, P34, and P88 had a better recovery factor than NH34 and PA2 due to their lower values of residual adsorption and IPV. Few studies have been reported on polymer nanohybrids' emulsion and flow behavior. Therefore, further research is needed to enhance our understanding of the fundamental enhanced oil recovery mechanisms associated with polymer nanohybrids.

Evaluation of the Thermal, Chemical, Mechanical, and Microbial Stability of New Nanohybrids Based on Carboxymethyl-Scleroglucan and Silica Nanoparticles for EOR Applications

Scleroglucan (SG) is resistant to harsh reservoir conditions such as high temperature, high shear stresses, and the presence of chemical substances. However, it is susceptible to biological degradation because bacteria use SG as a source of energy and carbon. All degradation effects lead to viscosity loss of the SG solutions, affecting their performance as an enhanced oil recovery (EOR) polymer. Recent studies have shown that nanoparticles (NPs) can mitigate these degradative effects. For this reason, the EOR performance of two new nanohybrids (NH-A and NH-B) based on carboxymethyl-scleroglucan and amino-functionalized silica nanoparticles was studied. The susceptibility of these products to chemical, mechanical, and thermal degradation was evaluated following standard procedures (API RP 63), and the microbial degradation was assessed under reservoir-relevant conditions (1311 ppm and 100 °C) using a bottle test system. The results showed that the chemical reactions for the nanohybrids obtained modified the SG triple helix configuration, impacting its viscosifying power. However, the nanohybrid solutions retained their viscosity during thermal, mechanical, and chemical degradation experiments due to the formation of a tridimensional network between the nanoparticles (NPs) and the SG. Also, NH-A and NH-B solutions exhibited bacterial control because of steric hindrances caused by nanoparticle modifications to SG. This prevents extracellular glucanases from recognizing the site of catalysis, limiting free glucose availability and generating cell death due to substrate depletion. This study provides insights into the performance of these nanohybrids and promotes their application in reservoirs with harsh conditions.

Agro-Waste Valorization into Carbonaceous Eco-Hydrogel: A Circular Economy and Zero Waste Tactic for Doxorubicin Removal in Water/Wastewater

The existing work aims to evaluate the efficiency of eco-hydrogel for adsorption of pollutants prepared from biopolymeric matrix and agricultural waste-derived biochar. An efficient and reusable adsorbent, designed from the integration of maize stalk activated carbon into a gelatin-alginate composite (MSAC@GE-SA) was explored for removal of doxorubicin hydrochloride (Doxo.HCL) from polluted water. The structural properties, presence of surface functional groups, and elemental composition were explored using XRD, SEM, BET, FTIR, and XPS techniques. The key adsorption parameters such as Doxo.HCL concentration, MSAC@GE-SA amount, solution pH, and the contact time between adsorbate and adsorbents were successfully optimized for the effective removal of Doxo.HCL (qmax = 239.41 mg g-1). The kinetic mechanism of MSAC@GE-SA fits well with a pseudo-second-order rate model (R2 = 0.980), followed by mono- and multilayered Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms with R2 values 0.991 and 0.993, respectively. The recyclability of MSAC@GE-SA showed great stability without any physical damage and having sustained removal efficiency up to 10 cycles (96.32 to 55.66%). The versatility of MSAC@GE-SA was further investigated for river, canal, and sewage water samples under identical experimental conditions. The practicality of the MSAC@GE-SA was evaluated by spiking Doxo.HCL into industrial effluents via the standard addition method. Subsequently, the chemical oxygen demand (COD) of the treated pollutants exhibited a notable reduction, decreasing significantly from 128 to 80 mg L-1. Following 10 successful adsorption-desorption cycles, the spent MSAC@GE-SA was utilized as a fertilizer for Vigna radiata plants, positively contributing to overall plant growth without causing harm. Hence, proposed adsorbent (MSAC@GE-SA) emerges as a viable and sustainable solution, demonstrating features of reusability and cost-effectiveness. It holds significant promise for the removal of pharmaceutical pollutants, aligning with the principles of circular economy and zero-waste tactics.

Multiple Hydrogen Bonding-Assisted High-Strength Hydrogel of Silica/Polyacrylamide Nanocomposite Cross-Linked with Polyethylenimine

The nanocomposite gel system has been successfully applied as a water shutoff agent to enhance oil recovery (EOR) or for plugging to control lost circulation events. In this study, the silica/polyacrylamide nanocomposite was synthesized via in situ free radical polymerization of acrylamide (AM) monomers in the presence of silica nanoparticles. The composite was cross-linked with polyethylenimine to prepare a high-strength hydrogel. The viscosity test was conducted to determine the gelation time of the gel. Rheological measurements and sand pack breakthrough pressure tests were carried out to measure the gel strength. Attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) tests were adopted to characterize the structure and morphology of the gel. The results show that compared to polyacrylamide (PAM) gel, the gelation time of the nanocomposite gel will decrease with increasing gel elasticity modulus, and the breakthrough pressure of the nanocomposite gel is 29.82 MPa, which increased by 65%. As shown in the ATR-FTIR test, this can be attributed to the presence of multiple hydrogen bonds for the PAM molecule with both silica and quartz sand particles. In the composite gel, hydrogen bonding mainly forms between the O atoms of PAM and the H atom on the surface of silica, enhancing gel strength and elasticity modulus with more cross-linking density and less porosity. Moreover, H bonding between additional -NH2 of PAM and quartz sand particles helps improve gel plugging pressure. However, in the silica and PAM mixture gel, the H bonding of silica occupies -NH2 of PAM, which became unavailable to attach on the sand surface, reducing the breakthrough pressure by 30%, although it can enhance the rheological strength. This study suggests that in situ composite of silica in PAM can not only greatly improve gel rheological strength but also help maintain the strong adhesion of PAM molecules onto quartz sand, resulting in better plugging performance in the sand reservoir.

Hydrogen Gas Sensing Properties of Mixed Copper-Titanium Oxide Thin Films

Hydrogen is an efficient source of clean and environmentally friendly energy. However, because it is explosive at concentrations higher than 4%, safety issues are a great concern. As its applications are extended, the need for the production of reliable monitoring systems is urgent. In this work, mixed copper-titanium oxide ((CuTi)Ox) thin films with various copper concentrations (0-100 at.%), deposited by magnetron sputtering and annealed at 473 K, were investigated as a prospective hydrogen gas sensing material. Scanning electron microscopy was applied to determine the morphology of the thin films. Their structure and chemical composition were investigated by X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, respectively. The prepared films were nanocrystalline mixtures of metallic copper, cuprous oxide, and titanium anatase in the bulk, whereas at the surface only cupric oxide was found. In comparison to the literature, the (CuTi)Ox thin films already showed a sensor response to hydrogen at a relatively low operating temperature of 473 K without using any extra catalyst. The best sensor response and sensitivity to hydrogen gas were found in the mixed copper-titanium oxides containing similar atomic concentrations of both metals, i.e., 41/59 and 56/44 of Cu/Ti. Most probably, this effect is related to their similar morphology and to the simultaneous presence of Cu and Cu₂O crystals in these mixed oxide films. In particular, the studies of surface oxidation state revealed that it was the same for all annealed films and consisted only of CuO. However, in view of their crystalline structure, they consisted of Cu and Cu₂O nanocrystals in the thin film volume.

Hydrolyzed Polyacrylamide as an In Situ Assistant in the Nucleation and Growth of Gold Nanoparticles

The modulation of nanoparticles' size, shape, and dispersion by polymers has attracted particular attention in different fields. Nevertheless, there is a lack of information regarding the use of charged macromolecules as assistants in the nanostructures' nucleation and growth processes. Prompted by this, the in situ synthesis of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) aided by hydrolyzed polyacrylamides (HPAM), with different chemical structures, was developed. In contrast to the conventional synthesis of nanostructures assisted by polyacrylamide, here, the polymerization, hydrolysis, and nanostructure formation processes were carried out simultaneously in the same milieu. Likewise, the growing chains acted as a template for the nanoparticles' growth, so their conformations and chemical structure, especially the amount of charges along the chain, played an important role in the AuNPs' morphology, size, and some of the final composite features. The nanocomposite was thoroughly characterized with appropriate techniques, including ATR-FTIR, GPC, UV-Vis, and SEM.

A nanocellulose-based platform towards targeted chemo-photodynamic/photothermal cancer therapy

Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) have advantages as drug delivery carriers because of their biocompatibility and the presence of hydroxyl groups which favor chemical modification and drug binding. The present study describes the development of novel multifunctional rod-like CNCs-based carriers as therapeutic platforms: CNCs were hybridized with folic acid for actively targeting tumor cells, carbon dots (Cdots) for both imaging and photodynamic/photothermal treatments and doxorubicin (DOX) as an anticancer drug. Hybridized carriers displayed excellent drug-loading capacity. Moreover, Cdots-containing hybrids showed fluorescence and photosensitized singlet oxygen generation and photothermal behavior. Carriers exhibited pH-sensitive drug release because of changing interactions with DOX, and this release proved to be effective against in vitro cervical cancer cells, as evidenced by dose-dependent reduced cellular viabilities. Additionally, DOX release was promoted by light irradiation and the photodynamic behavior by reactive oxygen species was confirmed. These results demonstrate the potential of multifunctional CNCs-based carriers as platforms for multimodal photodynamic/photothermal-chemotherapy.

High-Strength, Strongly Bonded Nanocomposite Hydrogels for Cartilage Repair

Polyacrylamide-based hydrogels are widely used as potential candidates for cartilage replacement. However, their bioapplicability is sternly hampered due to their limited mechanical strength and puncture resistance. In the present work, the strength of polyacrylamide (PAM) hydrogels was increased using titanium oxide (TiO₂) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) separately and a combination of TiO₂ with CNTs in a PAM matrix, which was interlinked by the bonding between nanoparticles and polymers with the deployment of density functional theory (DFT) approach. The synergistic effect and strong interfacial bonding of TiO₂ and CNT nanoparticles with PAM are attributed to high compressive strength, elastic modulus (>0.43 and 2.340 MPa, respectively), and puncture resistance (estimated using the needle insertion test) for the PAM-TiO₂-CNT hydrogel. The PAM-TiO₂-CNT composite hydrogel revealed a significant self-healing phenomenon along with a sign toward the bioactivity and cytocompatibility by forming the apatite crystals in simulated body fluid as well as showing a cell viability of ∼99%, respectively. Furthermore, for new insights on interfacial bonding and structural and electronic features involved in the hydrogels, DFT was used. The PAM-TiO₂-CNT composite model, constructed by two interfaces (PAM-TiO₂ and PAM-CNT), was stabilized by H-bonding and van der Waals-type interactions. Employing the NCI plot, HOMO-LUMO gap, and natural population analysis tools, the PAM-TiO₂-CNT composite has been found to be most stable. Therefore, the prepared polyacrylamide hydrogels in combination with the TiO₂ and CNT can be a remarkable nanocomposite hydrogel for cartilage repair applications.

Morphological and Structural Properties of Amino-Functionalized Fumed Nanosilica and Its Comparison with Nanoparticles Obtained by Modified Stöber Method

In industry, silica nanoparticles (NPs) are obtained by the fuming and the precipitation method. Fumed silica NPs are commonly used in the preparation of nanocomposites because they have an extremely low bulk density (160-190 kg/m3), large surface area (50-600 m2/g), and nonporous surface, which promotes strong physical contact between the NPs and the organic phase. Fumed silica has fewer silanol groups (Si-OH) on its surface than the silica prepared by the Stöber method. However, the number of -OH groups on the fumed silica surface can be increased by pretreating them with sodium hydroxide (NaOH) before further surface modification. In this study, the effectiveness of the NaOH pretreatment was evaluated on commercial fumed silica NPs with a surface area of 200 m2/g. The number of surface -OH groups was estimated by potentiometric titration. The pretreated fumed NPs, and the precipitated NPs (prepared by the Stöber method) were modified with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) to obtain A200S and nSiO2-APTES, respectively. The NPs were characterized using electron dispersive scanning (EDS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), dynamic light scattering (DLS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), BET (Brunauer-Emmett-Teller) analysis, and ζ-potential. XRD confirmed the presence of the organo-functional group on the surface of both NPs. After the amino-functionalization, the ζ-potential values of the nSiO2 and A200 changed from -35.5 mV and -14.4 mV to +26.2 mV and +11.76 mV, respectively. Consequently, we have successfully synthesized functionalized NPs with interesting, specific surface area and porosity (pore volume and size), which can be attractive materials for chemical and energy industries.
