Modern Trends in Polymerization-Induced Self-Assembly

Polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA) is a powerful and versatile technique for producing colloidal dispersions of block copolymer particles with desired morphologies. Currently, PISA can be carried out in various media, over a wide range of temperatures, and using different mechanisms. This method enables the production of biodegradable objects and particles with various functionalities and stimuli sensitivity. Consequently, PISA offers a broad spectrum of potential commercial applications. The aim of this review is to provide an overview of the current state of rational synthesis of block copolymer particles with diverse morphologies using various PISA techniques and mechanisms. The discussion begins with an examination of the main thermodynamic, kinetic, and structural aspects of block copolymer micellization, followed by an exploration of the key principles of PISA in the formation of gradient and block copolymers. The review also delves into the main mechanisms of PISA implementation and the principles governing particle morphology. Finally, the potential future developments in PISA are considered.

Glycopolymer-Based Materials: Synthesis, Properties, and Biosensing Applications

Glycopolymer materials have emerged as a significant biopolymer class that has piqued the scientific community's attention due to their potential applications. Recently, they have been found to be a unique synthetic biomaterial; glycopolymer materials have also been used for various applications, including direct therapeutic methods, medical adhesives, drug/gene delivery systems, and biosensor applications. Therefore, for the next stage of biomaterial research, it is essential to understand current breakthroughs in glycopolymer-based materials research. This review discusses the most widely utilized synthetic methodologies for glycopolymer-based materials, their properties based on structure–function interactions, and the significance of these materials in biosensing applications, among other topics. When creating glycopolymer materials, contemporary polymerization methods allow precise control over molecular weight, molecular weight distribution, chemical activity, and polymer architecture. This review concludes with a discussion of the challenges and complexities of glycopolymer-based biosensors, in addition to their potential applications in the future.

Polystyrene-b-Poly(2-(Methoxyethoxy)ethyl Methacrylate) Polymerization by Different Controlled Polymerization Mechanisms

Functional polymers have been an important field of research in recent years. With the development of the controlled polymerization methods, block-copolymers of defined structures and properties could be obtained. In this paper, the possibility of the synthesis of the functional block-copolymer polystyrene-b-poly(2-(methoxyethoxy)ethyl methacrylate) was tested. The target was to prepare the polymer of the number average molecular weight (Mn) of approximately 120 that would contain 20–40% of poly(2-(methoxyethoxy)ethyl methacrylate) by mass and in which the polymer phases would be separated. The polymerization reactions were performed by three different mechanisms for the controlled polymerization—sequential anionic polymerization, atomic transfer radical polymerization and the combination of those two methods. In sequential anionic polymerization and in atomic transfer radical polymerization block-copolymers of the desired composition were obtained but with the Mn significantly lower than desired (up to 30). The polymerization of the block-copolymers of the higher Mn was unsuccessful, and the possible mechanisms for the unwanted side reactions are discussed. It is also concluded that combination of sequential anionic polymerization and atomic transfer radical polymerization is not suitable for this system as polystyrene macroinitiator cannot initiate the polymerization of poly(2-(methoxyethoxy)ethyl methacrylate).

ATRP-based synthesis of a pH-sensitive amphiphilic block polymer and its self-assembled micelles with hollow mesoporous silica as DOX carriers for controlled drug release

The atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP)-based synthesis of a pH-sensitive fluorescent polymer (PSDMA-b-POEGMA) was successfully prepared using 3,6-dibromo-isobutyramide acridine (DIA), an initiator with a fluorescent chromophore, to initiate a lipophilic monomer 2-styryl-1,3-dioxan-5-yl methacrylate (SDMA) and a hydrophilic monomer oligo(ethylene glycol) methyl ether (OEGMA), which contained a cinnamic aldehyde acetal structure. With the addition of hollow mesoporous silicon (HMS@C18), the pH-sensitive core–shell nanoparticles (HMS@C18@PSDMA-b-POEGMA) were developed via a self-assembly process as carriers for the anticancer drug doxorubicin (DOX) for drug loading and controlled release. The nanocomposites showed a higher drug loading capacity which was much higher than that observed using common micelles. At the same time, the polymer coated on the surface of the nanoparticles contains the fluorescent segment of an initiator, which can be used for fluorescence contrast of the cells. The nanocomposite carrier selectively inhibits human melanoma cell A375 relative to human normal fibroblasts GM. The in vitro results suggested that a smart pH sensitive nanoparticles drug delivery system was successfully prepared for potential applications in cancer diagnosis and therapy.

Concurrent atom transfer radical polymerization and nitroxide radical coupling relay polymerization

Simultaneous atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and nitroxide radical coupling (NRC) seems impossible because the presence of nitroxide radicals would quench the radical polymerization immediately. However, by combining a nitroxide radical and an ATRP active halogen, a halogen group that can initiate one polymer chain by ATRP, into one functional reagent and adding this functional reagent to an ATRP system, concurrent ATRP-NRC relay polymerization was carried out successfully under proper reaction conditions. The key to success was the conjugate radical trapping and re-initiation took place repeatedly, resulting in polymers with inserted alkoxyamine linkages. This novel relay polymerization method provides numerous possibilities for macromolecular architecture/functionality tailoring by using of different functional reagents.
