Preparation of a Novel Polystyrene-Poly(hydroxamic Acid) Copolymer and Its Adsorption Properties for Rare Earth Metal Ions

Enhancement of Cerium Sorption onto Urea-Functionalized Magnetite Chitosan Microparticles by Sorbent Sulfonation—Application to Ore Leachate

The recovery of strategic metals such as rare earth elements (REEs) requires the development of new sorbents with high sorption capacities and selectivity. The bi-functionality of sorbents showed a remarkable capacity for the enhancement of binding properties. This work compares the sorption properties of magnetic chitosan (MC, prepared by dispersion of hydrothermally precipitated magnetite microparticles (synthesized through Fe(II)/Fe(III) precursors) into chitosan solution and crosslinking with glutaraldehyde) with those of the urea derivative (MC-UR) and its sulfonated derivative (MC-UR/S) for cerium (as an example of REEs). The sorbents were characterized by FTIR, TGA, elemental analysis, SEM-EDX, TEM, VSM, and titration. In a second step, the effect of pH (optimum at pH 5), the uptake kinetics (fitted by the pseudo-first-order rate equation), the sorption isotherms (modeled by the Langmuir equation) are investigated. The successive modifications of magnetic chitosan increases the maximum sorption capacity from 0.28 to 0.845 and 1.25 mmol Ce g−1 (MC, MC-UR, and MC-UR/S, respectively). The bi-functionalization strongly increases the selectivity of the sorbent for Ce(III) through multi-component equimolar solutions (especially at pH 4). The functionalization notably increases the stability at recycling (for at least 5 cycles), using 0.2 M HCl for the complete desorption of cerium from the loaded sorbent. The bi-functionalized sorbent was successfully tested for the recovery of cerium from pre-treated acidic leachates, recovered from low-grade cerium-bearing Egyptian ore.

Equilibrium, Thermodynamic, Reuse, and Selectivity Studies for the Bioadsorption of Lanthanum onto Sericin/Alginate/Poly(vinyl alcohol) Particles

In a scenario of high demand, low availability, and high economic value, the recovery of rare-earth metals from wastewater is economically and environmentally attractive. Bioadsorption is a promising method as it offers simple design and operation. The aim of this study was to investigate lanthanum bioadsorption using a polymeric bioadsorbent of sericin/alginate/poly(vinyl alcohol)-based biocomposite. Batch system assays were performed to evaluate the equilibrium, thermodynamics, regeneration, and selectivity of bioadsorption. The maximum capture amount of lanthanum at equilibrium was 0.644 mmol/g at 328 K. The experimental equilibrium data were better fitted by Langmuir and Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherms. Ion exchange mechanism between calcium and lanthanum (2:3 ratio) was confirmed by bioadsorption isotherms. Thermodynamic quantities showed that the process of lanthanum bioadsorption was spontaneous (-17.586, -19.244, and -20.902 kJ/mol), endothermic (+15.372 kJ/mol), and governed by entropic changes (+110.543 J/mol·K). The reusability of particles was achieved using 0.1 mol/L HNO₃/Ca(NO₃)₂ solution for up to five regeneration cycles. The bioadsorbent selectivity followed the order of lanthanum > cadmium > zinc > nickel. Additionally, characterization of the biocomposite prior to and post lanthanum bioadsorption showed low porosity (9.95 and 12.35%), low specific surface area (0.054 and 0.019 m²/g), amorphous character, and thermal stability at temperatures up to 473 K. This study shows that sericin/ alginate/poly(vinyl alcohol)-based biocomposites are effective in the removal and recovery of lanthanum from water.

Electrospun Functional Nanofiber Membrane for Antibiotic Removal in Water: Review

As a new kind of water pollutant, antibiotics have encouraged researchers to develop new treatment technologies. Electrospun fiber membrane shows excellent benefits in antibiotic removal in water due to its advantages of large specific surface area, high porosity, good connectivity, easy surface modification and new functions. This review introduces the four aspects of electrospinning technology, namely, initial development history, working principle, influencing factors and process types. The preparation technologies of electrospun functional fiber membranes are then summarized. Finally, recent studies about antibiotic removal by electrospun functional fiber membrane are reviewed from three aspects, namely, adsorption, photocatalysis and biodegradation. Future research demand is also recommended.

Adsorption Properties for La(III), Ce(III), and Y(III) with Poly(6-acryloylamino-hexyl hydroxamic acid) Resin

Using polyacrylic resin followed by the substitution reaction with 6-aminohexyl hydroxamic acid, poly(6-acryloylamino-hexyl hydroxamic acid) resin (PAMHA) was successfully synthesized. PAMHA, a spherical resin with the particle size of 0.4 mm, is a novel polyamide hydroxamic acid chelating resin containing acylamino and hydroxamic acid functional groups. A series of influences (pH, contact time, temperature, and the initial concentrations of rare earth ions) were investigated to determine the adsorption properties. The adsorption capacity for La(III), Ce(III), and Y(III) ions were 1.030, 0.962, and 1.450 mmol·g-1, respectively. Thermodynamic and kinetic studies were also carried out to show that the uptake of rare earth ions onto PAMHA fitted well the pseudo-second-order model and Langmuir isotherm, and the adsorption process was spontaneous endothermic. In addition, desorption of rare earth ions was achieved by using 2 mol·L-1 HNO3 and desorption efficiencies for La(III), Ce(III), and Y(III) ions were 98.4, 99.1, and 98.8%, respectively. Properties of PAMHA resin were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR), and X-ray photoelectron spectrometer (XPS). The results showed that there was coordination between the rare earth ions with PAMHA and rare metal ions were chemically adsorbed on the surface of the PAMHA.
