Diffraction and Polarization Properties of Electrically-Tunable Nematic Liquid Crystal Grating

Control of Coherent Light through Microperiodic Director Modulation in Nematic Films under Low-Voltage DC Electric Field

This work addresses the achievement of efficient control of laser light transmission through stationary microperiodic parallel stripe textures formed in films of nematic liquid crystals (NLCs) in planar-oriented cells upon a direct-current (DC) electric field. By varying the field intensity and, thereby, the field-induced periodic modulation of the nematic director and hence the complex transmittance function corresponding to the longitudinal domain texture induced in NLC films with initial planar alignment, the intensity of a linearly polarized laser beam passed through the films can be well controlled. In 25 µm-thick films of room-temperature NLCs pentylcyanobiphenyl (5CB), this results in a low-voltage (~4 V) sharp and deep V-shaped behavior of their electro-optically controlled transmittance. Such a reversible electro-optical effect is interesting for active control of laser beam intensity and other applications. The relevant physical mechanism is analyzed and explained.

Reconfigurable Grating Diffraction Structural Color in Self-Assembled Colloidal Crystals

Self-assembled colloidal crystals display structural colors due to light diffracted from their microscale, ordered structure. This color arises due to Bragg reflection (BR) or grating diffraction (GD); the latter mechanism is much less explored than the former. Here the design space for generating GD structural color is identified and its relative advantages are demonstrated. Electrophoretic deposition is used to self-assemble crystals with fine crystal grains from colloids of diameter 1.0 µm. The structural color in transmission is tunable across the full visible spectrum. The optimum optical response-represented by both color intensity and saturation-is observed at low layer number (≤5 layers). The spectral response is well predicted by Mie scattering of the crystals. Taken together, the experimental and theoretical results demonstrate that vivid grating colors with high color saturation can be produced from thin layers of micron-sized colloids. These colloidal crystals extend the potential of artificial structural color materials.

Wide and continuous dynamic tuning of period, modulation depth and duty cycle of a laminar-flow-based microfluidic grating

Flexible diffraction gratings that can be dynamically tuned in terms of both diffraction efficiency and diffraction angles are very important components for various applications, and fundamentally can be tuned through varying the modulation depth, duty cycle and grating period. However, dynamic and continuous tuning of a grating in all three aspects is difficult and has never been demonstrated hitherto. We propose and successfully fabricate a laminar-flow-based microfluidic grating in which all the three parameters can be dynamically tuned by simply varying flow rates into several liquid inlets. A 32-period liquid grating is generated by using ethanol and benzyl alcohol as alternate liquid lamellae. The total diffraction efficiency is tuned between 0 and 99%, and the maximum diffraction efficiency of the first order is ∼27%. The duty cycle of the grating is dynamically tuned from 7.6% to 91.5%. The grating period is compressed from more than 22 μm to less than 4 μm, leading to tuning of the first order diffraction angle from 1.7° to 9.2°.

Electrically Tuneable Optical Diffraction Gratings Based on a Polymer Scaffold Filled with a Nematic Liquid Crystal

We present an experimental and theoretical investigation of the optical diffractive properties of electrically tuneable optical transmission gratings assembled as stacks of periodic slices from a conventional nematic liquid crystal (E7) and a standard photoresist polymer (SU-8). The external electric field causes a twist-type reorientation of the LC molecules toward a perpendicular direction with respect to initial orientation. The associated field-induced modification of the director field is determined numerically and analytically by minimization of the Landau–de Gennes free energy. The optical diffraction properties of the associated periodically modulated structure are calculated numerically on the basis of rigorous coupled-wave analysis (RCWA). A comparison of experimental and theoretical results suggests that polymer slices provoke planar surface anchoring of the LC molecules with the inhomogeneous surface anchoring energy varying in the range 5–20 μJ/m². The investigated structures provide a versatile approach to fabricating LC-polymer-based electrically tuneable diffractive optical elements (DOEs).

Liquid Crystal Devices for Beam Steering Applications

Liquid crystals are valuable materials for applications in beam steering devices. In this paper, an overview of the use of liquid crystals in the field of adaptive optics specifically for beam steering and lensing devices is presented. The paper introduces the properties of liquid crystals that have made them useful in this field followed by a more detailed discussion of specific liquid crystal devices that act as switchable optical components of refractive and diffractive types. The relative advantages and disadvantages of the different devices and techniques are summarised.

Design of Tunable Holographic Liquid Crystalline Diffraction Gratings

Tunable diffraction gratings and phase filters are important functional devices in optical communication and sensing systems. Polarization gratings, in particular, capable of redirecting an incident light beam completely into the first diffraction orders may be successfully fabricated in liquid crystalline cells assembled from substrates coated with uniform transparent electrodes and orienting layers that force a specific molecular distribution. In this work, the diffraction properties of liquid crystal (LC) cells characterized by a continually rotating cycloidal director pattern at the cell substrates and in the bulk, are studied theoretically by solving a relevant set of the Euler-Lagrange equations. The electric tunability of the gratings is analyzed by estimating the changes in liquid crystalline molecular distribution and thus in effective birefringence, as a function of external voltage. To the best of our knowledge, such detailed numerical calculations have not been presented so far for liquid crystal polarization gratings showing a cycloidal director pattern. Our theoretical predictions may be easily achieved in experimental conditions when exploiting, for example, photo-orienting material, to induce a permanent LC alignment with high spatial resolution. The proposed design may be for example, used as a tunable passband filter with adjustable bandwidths, thus allowing for potential applications in optical spectroscopy, optical communication networks, remote sensing and beyond.
