Abstract
Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) stands as a compelling alternative to conventional plastic-based packaging, signifying a notable shift toward sustainable material utilization. This comprehensive analysis illuminates the manifold applications of PLA composites within the realm of the food industry, emphasizing its pivotal role in food packaging and preservation. Noteworthy attributes of PLA composites with phenolic active compounds (phenolic acid and aldehyde, terpenes, carotenoid, and so on) include robust antimicrobial and antioxidant properties, significantly enhancing its capability to bolster adherence to stringent food safety standards. The incorporation of microbial and synthetic biopolymers, polysaccharides, oligosaccharides, oils, proteins and peptides to PLA in packaging solutions arises from its inherent non-toxicity and outstanding mechanical as well as thermal resilience. Functioning as a proficient film producer, PLA constructs an ideal preservation environment by merging optical and permeability traits. Esteemed as a pioneer in environmentally mindful packaging, PLA diminishes ecological footprints owing to its innate biodegradability. Primarily, the adoption of PLA extends the shelf life of products and encourages an eco-centric approach, marking a significant stride toward the food industry's embrace of sustainable packaging methodologies. Abstract
In order to reduce environmental pollution and resource waste, food packaging materials should not only have good biodegradable ability but also effective antibacterial properties. Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) is the most commonly used biopolymer for food packaging applications. PLA has good physical properties, mechanical properties, biodegradability, and cell compatibility but does not have inherent antibacterial properties. Therefore, antibacterial packaging materials based on PLA need to add antibacterial agents to the polymer matrix. Natural antibacterial agents are widely used in food packaging materials due to their low toxicity. The high volatility of natural antibacterial agents restricts their application in food packaging materials. Therefore, appropriate processing methods are particularly important. This review introduces PLA-based natural antibacterial food packaging, and the composition and application of natural antibacterial agents are discussed. The properties of natural antibacterial agents, the technology of binding with the matrix, and the effect of inhibiting various bacteria are summarized.

Abstract
Wine production is one of the most critical agro-industrial sectors worldwide, generating large amounts of waste with negative environmental impacts, but also with high economic value and several potential applications. From wine shoots to grape pomace or seeds, all of the wastes are rich sources of bioactive compounds with beneficial effects for human health, with these compounds being raw materials for other industries such as the pharmaceutical, cosmetic or food industries. Furthermore, these compounds present health benefits such as being antioxidants, supporting the immune system, anti-tumoral, or preventing cardiovascular and neural diseases. The present work aims to be a critical discussion of the extraction methods used for bioactive compounds from grapevine waste and their beneficial effects on human health.

Abstract
Food contamination with pathogenic microorganisms, such as Listeria monocytogenes, Salmonella enterica, Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus cereus, is a common health concern. Natural products, which have been the main source of antimicrobials for centuries, may represent a turning point in alleviating the antibiotic crisis, and plant polyphenolic compounds are considered a promising source for new antibacterial agents. Resveratrol and resveratrol-derived monomers and oligomers (stilbenoids) have been shown to exert a variegated pattern of efficacy as antimicrobials depending on both the polyphenols' structure and the nature of the microorganisms, and the bacterial cell membrane seems to be one of their primary targets.In this scenario and based on the thermodynamic information reported in the literature about cell membranes, this study aimed at the investigation of the direct interaction of selected stilbenoids with a simple but informative model cell membrane. Three complete stilbenoid "monomer/dimer/dehydro-dimer" sets were chosen according to different geometries and substitution patterns. Micro-DSC was performed on 2 : 3 DPPC : DSPC small unilamellar vesicles with incorporated polyphenols at physiological pH and the results were integrated using complementary NMR data. The study highlighted the molecular determinants and mechanisms involved in the stilbenoid-membrane interaction, and the results were well correlated with the microbiological evidence previously assessed.

Abstract
Here we introduce a new method aiming the immobilization of bioactive principles onto polymeric substrates, combining a surface activation and emulsion entrapment approach. Natural products with antimicrobial/antioxidant properties (essential oil from Syzygium aromaticum-clove and vegetal oil from Argania spinosa L-argan) were stabilized in emulsions with chitosan, a natural biodegradable polymer that has antimicrobial activity. The emulsions were laid on poly(lactic acid) (PLA), a synthetic biodegradable plastic from renewable resources, which was previously activated by plasma treatment. Bioactive materials were obtained, with low permeability for oxygen, high radical scavenging activity and strong inhibition of growth for Listeria monocytogenes, Salmonella Typhimurium and Escherichia coli bacteria. Clove oil was better dispersed in a more stable emulsion (no separation after six months) compared with argan oil. This leads to a compact and finely structured coating, with better overall properties. While both clove and argan oils are highly hydrophobic, the coatings showed increased hydrophilicity, especially for argan, due to preferential interactions with different functional groups in chitosan. The PLA films coated with oil-loaded chitosan showed promising results in retarding the food spoilage of meat, and especially cheese. Argan, and in particular, clove oil offered good UV protection, suitable for sterilization purposes. Therefore, using the emulsion stabilization of bioactive principles and immobilization onto plasma activated polymeric surfaces we obtained a bioactive material that combines the physical properties and the biodegradability of PLA with the antibacterial activity of chitosan and the antioxidant function of vegetal oils. This prevents microbial growth and food oxidation and could open new perspectives in the field of food packaging materials.

Abstract
The efficient use of waste from food processing industry is one of the innovative approaches within sustainable development, because it can be transferred into added value products, which could improve economic, energetic and environmental sectors. In this context, the squid pen waste from seafood industry was used as raw material to obtain nanofibrous β-chitin films. In order to extend functionality of obtained films, elderberry extract obtained from biomass was added at different concentrations. The tensile strength of chitin-elderberry extract films was improved by 52%, elongation at break by 153% and water vapor barrier by 65%. The obtained material showed distinct color change when subjected to acidic or basic solutions. It was proven by CIELab color analysis that all color changes could be easily perceived visually. In addition, the obtained nanofibrous film was successfully used to monitor the freshness of Hake fish. Namely, when the film was introduced in a package that contained fresh fish, its color was efficiently changed within the time during the storage at 4 °C. The obtained results demonstrated that food processing waste could be efficiently valorized, and could give sustainable food package design as a spoilage indicator of high protein food.
