Strategies for strengthening toughened poly(lactic acid) blend via natural reinforcement with enhanced biodegradability: A review

The growing popularity of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) can be attributed to its favorable attributes, such as excellent compostability and robust mechanical properties. Two notable limitations of PLA are its high brittleness and slow biodegradation rate. Both of blending and copolymerization strategies work well to improve PLA's toughness while sacrificing the good tensile strength and modulus properties of PLA. One of the most effective and economical approaches to address this challenge is to incorporate natural reinforcing agents into the toughened PLA system, thereby simultaneously promoting the biodegradation rate of PLA. Nevertheless, the enhancement of tensile strength and modulus is accompanied by a notable decrease in elongation. Therefore, this review provides comprehensive information on the literature works related to the tensile strength, modulus, elongation at break and impact strength of the toughened PLA and its natural fiber reinforced composites. The impact of natural reinforcing agent on the tensile fracture mechanism as well as the synergistic effect on strengthening and toughening performance will be discussed. This review also focuses on the factors boosting the biodegradability of toughened PLA blend by using natural reinforcing fiber. Review presents potential future insights into the development of biodegradable and balanced strengthened-toughened PLA based advanced materials.

Development of an Ultrasonic Method for the Quality Control of Polyethylene Tanks Manufactured Using Rotational Molding Technology

Tanks made of three different brands of rotational polyethylene (DOW, ELTEX, and M350) with three degrees of sintering (normal sintering (NS), incomplete sintering (ICS), and thermally degraded sintering (TDS)) and three thicknesses (7.5 mm, 8.5 mm, and 9.5 mm) were explored. It was found that the thickness of the walls of the tanks did not have a statistically significant effect on the parameters of the ultrasonic signal (USS). An increase in temperature caused a decrease in the USS parameters. According to the temperature coefficient of stability, the ELTEX brand of plastic can be distinguished (from DOW and M350). The ICS degree of the sintering of the tanks was revealed from a significantly lower amplitude of the bottom signal, compared with NS and TDS degree samples. By analyzing the amplitude of the third harmonic of the ultrasonic signal (β), three degrees of the sintering of containers NS, ICS, and TDS were revealed (with an accuracy of about 95%). Equations β = f(T, PIAT) were derived for each brand of rotational polyethylene (PE), and two-factor nomograms were constructed. Based on the results of this research, a method for the ultrasonic quality control of polyethylene tanks manufactured using rotational molding was developed.

Heterogeneous porous PLLA/PCL fibrous scaffold for bone tissue regeneration

Bone tissue engineering has become one of the most promising therapeutic methods to treat bone defects. A suitable scaffolding material to regenerate new bone tissues should have a high specific surface area, high porosity and a suitable surface structure which benefit cell attachment, proliferation, and differentiation. In this study, an acetone post-treatment strategy was developed to generate heterogeneous structure. After PLLA/PCL nanofibrous membranes were electrospun and collected, they were treated with acetone to generate a highly porous structure. Meanwhile, part of PCL was extracted from the fibre and enriched on the fibre surface. The cell affinity of the nanofibrous membrane was verified by human osteoblast-like cells assay. The proliferation rate of heterogeneous samples increased 190.4 %, 265.5 % and 137.9 % at day 10 compared with pristine samples. These results demonstrated that the heterogeneous PLLA/PCL nanofibrous membranes could enhance osteoblast adhesion and proliferation. With high surface area (average surface area 36.302 m²/g) and good mechanical properties (average Young's modulus 1.65 GPa and average tensile strength 5.1 MPa), the heterogeneous PLLA/PCL membrane should have potential applications in the field of bone regeneration.

Use of Ricinus communis shredded material as filler in rotational molded parts to improve the bio-disintegration behavior

This paper focuses on the use of castor oil plant (Ricinus communis) as filler in rotomolded parts using polyethylene (PE) and polylactic acid (PLA) as polymer matrixes. The vegetable shredded material was used in 5 and 10% weight following a dry blending procedure and then rotomolded to obtain cube test parts. This material was characterized to determine its chemical composition, thermal stability, and structure. The NaOH-treated material shows reduced hemicellulose content and higher thermal stability. Obtained composite materials were characterized in terms of mechanical (tensile, flexural, and impact) and thermal properties, morphology, and bio-disintegration behavior. The use of Ricinus as filler in rotomolded PE composite decreases, in general terms, mechanical properties of neat PE, while no significant changes in thermal or bio-disintegration properties are found. On the contrary, PLA composites show higher tensile strength and similar Young's modulus than the matrix, although with reduced flexural and impact properties. Alkali-treated Ricinus material produces parts with higher porosity and thus, lower mechanical properties than composites with untreated material. Finally, the incorporation of this vegetal material modifies to a great extent the thermal properties of the PLA matrix. The bio-disintegration rate increases due to the use of fibers, probably because of the higher moisture absorption of composites.

Impact of Melt Processing Conditions on the Degradation of Polylactic Acid

To reduce the degradation of polylactic acid (PLA) during processing, which reduces the molecular weight of PLA and its properties, prior studies have recommended low processing temperatures. In contrast, this work investigated the impact of four factors affecting shear heating (extruder type, screw configuration, screw speed, and feed rate) on the degradation of PLA. The polylactic acid was processed using a quad screw extruder (QSE) and a comparable twin screw extruder (TSE), two screw configurations, higher screw speeds, and several feed rates. The processed PLA was characterized by its rheological, thermal, and material composition properties. In both screw configurations, the QSE (which has a greater free volume) produced 3–4 °C increases in melt temperature when the screw speed was increased from 400 rpm to 1000 rpm, whereas the temperature rise was 24–25 °C in the TSE. PLA processed at low screw speeds, however, exhibited greater reductions in molecular weight—i.e., 9% in the QSE and 7% in the TSE. Screw configurations with fewer kneading blocks, and higher feed rates in the QSE, reduced degradation of PLA. At lower processing temperatures, it was found that an increase in melt temperature and shear rate did not significantly contribute to the degradation of PLA. Reducing the residence time during processing minimized the degradation of PLA in a molten state.

Manufacture and Characterization of Polypropylene (PP) and High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) Blocks for Potential Use as Masonry Component in Civil Construction

The lack of suitable destinations for plastics materials can be a global environmental problem. The alternative use of materials for sustainable construction encourages the standardization of waste and promotes effective social, environmental and economic gains at the local level and ensures savings and income for communities. The aim of this paper is the development, manufacture, and characterization of PP and HDPE recycled polyolefin blocks as masonry components in civil construction. These blocks were manufactured by the rotational molding process. Besides this, the mechanical, physical, impact and flammability properties of the blocks were studied. In conclusion, HDPE showed better behavior than PP in tests realized.
