Characteristics of Poly(vinyl Alcohol) (PVA) Based Composites Integrated with Green Synthesized Al3+-Metal Complex: Structural, Optical, and Localized Density of State Analysis

Aluminum-Crosslinked Nanocellulose Scaffolds for Fluoride Removal

Anionic carboxylated cellulose nanofibers (CNF) are effective media to remove cationic contaminants from water. In this study, sustainable cationic CNF-based adsorbents capable of removing anionic contaminants were demonstrated using a simple approach. Specifically, the zero-waste nitro-oxidization process was used to produce carboxylated CNF (NOCNF), which was subsequently converted into a cationic scaffold by crosslinking with aluminum ions. The system, termed Al-CNF, is found to be effective for the removal of fluoride ions from water. Using the Langmuir isotherm model, the fluoride adsorption study indicates that Al-CNF has a maximum adsorption capacity of 43.3 mg/g, which is significantly higher than that of alumina-based adsorbents such as activated alumina (16.3 mg/g). The selectivity of fluoride adsorption in the presence of other anionic species (nitrate or sulfate) by Al-CNF at different pH values was also evaluated. The results indicate that Al-CNF can maintain a relatively high selectivity towards the adsorption of fluoride. Finally, the sequential applicability of using spent Al-CNF after the fluoride adsorption to further remove cationic contaminant such as Basic Red 2 dye was demonstrated. The low cost and relatively high adsorption capacity of Al-CNF make it suitable for practical applications in fluoride removal from water.

Chitosan/Polyvinyl Alcohol-Based Biofilms Using Ternary Deep Eutectic Solvents towards Innovative Color-Stabilizing Systems for Anthocyanins

Anthocyanins are amazing plant-derived colorants with highly valuable properties; however, their chemical and color instability issues limit their wide application in different food industry-related products such as active and intelligent packaging. In a previous study, it was demonstrated that anthocyanins could be stabilized into green plasticizers namely deep eutectic solvents (DESs). In this work, the fabrication of edible films by integrating anthocyanins along with DESs into biocompatible chitosan (CHT)-based formulations enriched with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and PVA nanoparticles was investigated. CHT/PVA-DES films' physical properties were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, water vapor permeability, swelling index, moisture sorption isotherm, and thermogravimetry analysis. Innovative red-to-blue formulation films were achieved for CHT/PVA nanoparticles (for 5 min of sonication) at a molar ratio 1:1, and with 10% of ternary DES (TDES)-containing malvidin-3-glucoside (0.1%) where the physical properties of films were enhanced. After immersion in solutions at different pH values, films submitted to pHs 5-8 were revealed to be more color stable and resistant with time than at acidic pH values.

Dyes Confinement in the Nano Scale and Converting Poly Vinyl Alcohol to Be Optical-Active Polymeric Nanocomposites with High Thermal Stability

In the present research, groups of nanolayered structures and nanohybrids based on organic green dyes and inorganic species are designated to act as fillers for PVA to induce new optical sites and increase its thermal stability through producing polymeric nanocomposites. In this trend, different percentages of naphthol green B were intercalated as pillars inside the Zn-Al nanolayered structures to form green organic-inorganic nanohybrids. The two-dimensional green nanohybrids were identified by X-ray diffraction, TEM and SEM. According to the thermal analyses, the nanohybrid, which has the highest amount of green dyes, was used for modifying the PVA through two series. In the first series, three nanocomposites were prepared depending on the green nanohybrid as prepared. In the second series, the yellow nanohybrid, which was produced from the green nanohybrid by thermal treatment, was used to produce another three nanocomposites. The optical properties revealed that the polymeric nanocomposites depending on green nanohybrids became optical-active in UV and visible regions because the energy band gap decreased to 2.2 eV. In addition, the energy band gap of the nanocomposites which depended on yellow nanohybrids was 2.5 eV. The thermal analyses indicated that the polymeric nanocomposites are thermally more stable than that of the original PVA. Finally, the dual functionality of organic-inorganic nanohybrids that were produced from the confinement of organic dyes and the thermal stability of inorganic species converted the non-optical PVA to optical-active polymer in a wide range with high thermal stability.

Insight into the Effect of Glycerol on Dielectric Relaxation and Transport Properties of Potassium-Ion-Conducting Solid Biopolymer Electrolytes for Application in Solid-State Electrochemical Double-Layer Capacitor

The increased interest in the transition from liquid to solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) has driven enormous research in the area polymer electrolyte technology. Solid biopolymer electrolytes (SBEs) are a special class of SPEs that are obtained from natural polymers. Recently, SBEs have been generating much attention because they are simple, inexpensive, and environmentally friendly. In this work, SBEs based on glycerol-plasticized methylcellulose/pectin/potassium phosphate (MC/PC/K₃PO₄) are investigated for their potential application in an electrochemical double-layer capacitor (EDLC). The structural, electrical, thermal, dielectric, and energy moduli of the SBEs were analyzed via X-ray diffractometry (XRD), Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), transference number measurement (TNM), and linear sweep voltammetry (LSV). The plasticizing effect of glycerol in the MC/PC/K₃PO₄/glycerol system was confirmed by the change in the intensity of the samples' FTIR absorption bands. The broadening of the XRD peaks demonstrates that the amorphous component of SBEs increases with increasing glycerol concentration, while EIS plots demonstrate an increase in ionic conductivity with increasing plasticizer content owing to the formation of charge-transfer complexes and the expansion of amorphous domains in polymer electrolytes (PEs). The sample containing 50% glycerol has a maximal ionic conductivity of about 7.5 × 10^-4 scm^-1, a broad potential window of 3.99 V, and a cation transference number of 0.959 at room temperature. Using the cyclic voltammetry (CV) test, the EDLC constructed from the sample with the highest conductivity revealed a capacitive characteristic. At 5 mVs^-1, a leaf-shaped profile with a specific capacitance of 57.14 Fg^-1 was measured based on the CV data.

Variation in the Optical Properties of PEO-Based Composites via a Green Metal Complex: Macroscopic Measurements to Explain Microscopic Quantum Transport from the Valence Band to the Conduction Band

In this study, a green chemistry method was used to synthesize polymer composites based on polyethylene oxide (PEO). The method of the remediation of metal complexes used in this study is an environmentally friendly procedure with a low cost. Zinc metal ion (Zn²⁺)-polyphenol (PPHNL) complexes were synthesized for two minutes via the combination of a black tea leaf (BTL) extract solution with dissolved Zn-acetate. Then, UV-Vis and FTIR were carried out for the Zn-PPHNL complexes in a liquid and solid. The FTIR spectra show that BTLs contain sufficient functional groups (O-H, C-H, C=O, C=C, C-O, C-N, and N-H), PPHNL, and conjugated double bonds to produce metal complexes by capturing the cations of Zn-acetate salt. Moreover, FTIR of the BTL and Zn-PPHNL complexes approves the formation of the Zn-PPHNL complex over the wide variation in the intensity of bands. The UV absorption spectra of BTL and Zn-PPHNL indicate complex formation among tea PPHNL and Zn cations, which enhances the absorption spectra of the Zn-PPHNL to 0.1 compared to the figure of 0.01 associated with the extracted tea solution. According to an XRD analysis, an amorphous Zn-PPHNL complex was created when Zn²⁺ ions and PPHNL interacted. Additionally, XRD shows that the structure of the PEO composite becomes a more amorphous structure as the concentration of Zn-PPHNL increases. Furthermore, morphological study via an optical microscope (OM) shows that by increasing the concentration of Zn-PPHNL in a PEO polymer composite the size of the spherulites ascribed to the crystalline phase dramatically decreases. The optical properties of PEO: Zn-PPHNL films, via UV-Vis spectroscopy, were rigorously studied. The E_g is calculated by examining the dielectric loss, which is reduced from 5.5 eV to 0.6 eV by increasing the concentration of Zn-PPHNL in the PEO samples. In addition, Tauc's form was used to specify the category of electronic transitions in the PEO: Zn-PPHNL films. The impact of crystalline structure and morphology on electronic transition types was discussed. Macroscopic measurable parameters, such as the refractive index and extinction coefficient, were used to determine optical dielectric loss. Fundamental optical dielectric functions were used to determine some key parameters. From the viewpoint of quantum transport, electron transitions were discussed. The merit of this work is that microscopic processes related to electron transition from the VB to the CB can be interpreted interms of measurable macroscopic quantities.

Development of Flexible Plasticized Ion Conducting Polymer Blend Electrolytes Based on Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA): Chitosan (CS) with High Ion Transport Parameters Close to Gel Based Electrolytes

In the current study, flexible films of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA): chitosan (CS) solid polymer blend electrolytes (PBEs) with high ion transport property close enough to gel based electrolytes were prepared with the aid of casting methodology. Glycerol (GL) as a plasticizer and sodium bromide (NaBr) as an ionic source provider are added to PBEs. The flexible films have been examined for their structural and electrical properties. The GL content changed the brittle and solid behavior of the films to a soft manner. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) methods were used to examine the structural behavior of the electrolyte films. X-ray diffraction investigation revealed that the crystalline character of PVA:CS:NaBr declined with increasing GL concentration. The FTIR investigation hypothesized the interaction between polymer mix salt systems and added plasticizer. Infrared (FTIR) band shifts and fluctuations in intensity have been found. The ion transport characteristics such as mobility, carrier density, and diffusion were successfully calculated using the experimental impedance data that had been fitted with EEC components and dielectric parameters. CS:PVA at ambient temperature has the highest ionic conductivity of 3.8 × 10 S/cm for 35 wt.% of NaBr loaded with 55 wt.% of GL. The high ionic conductivity and improved transport properties revealed the suitableness of the films for energy storage device applications. The dielectric constant and dielectric loss were higher at lower frequencies. The relaxation nature of the samples was investigated using loss tangent and electric modulus plots. The peak detected in the spectra of tanδ and M” plots and the distribution of data points are asymmetric besides the peak positions. The movements of ions are not free from the polymer chain dynamics due to viscoelastic relaxation being dominant. The distorted arcs in the Argand plot have confirmed the viscoelastic relaxation in all the prepared films.

A Study of Methylcellulose Based Polymer Electrolyte Impregnated with Potassium Ion Conducting Carrier: Impedance, EEC Modeling, FTIR, Dielectric, and Device Characteristics

In this research, a biopolymer-based electrolyte system involving methylcellulose (MC) as a host polymeric material and potassium iodide (KI) salt as the ionic source was prepared by solution cast technique. The electrolyte with the highest conductivity was used for device application of electrochemical double-layer capacitor (EDLC) with high specific capacitance. The electrical, structural, and electrochemical characteristics of the electrolyte systems were investigated using various techniques. According to electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), the bulk resistance (R_b) decreased from 3.3 × 10⁵ to 8 × 10² Ω with the increase of salt concentration from 10 wt % to 40 wt % and the ionic conductivity was found to be 1.93 ×10^-5 S/cm. The dielectric analysis further verified the conductivity trends. Low-frequency regions showed high dielectric constant, ε' and loss, ε″ values. The polymer-salt complexation between (MC) and (KI) was shown through a Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) studies. The analysis of transference number measurement (TNM) supported ions were predominantly responsible for the transport process in the MC-KI electrolyte. The highest conducting sample was observed to be electrochemically constant as the potential was swept linearly up to 1.8 V using linear sweep voltammetry (LSV). The cyclic voltammetry (CV) profile reveals the absence of a redox peak, indicating the presence of a charge double-layer between the surface of activated carbon electrodes and electrolytes. The maximum specific capacitance, C_s value was obtained as 118.4 F/g at the sweep rate of 10 mV/s.

Modeling the Optical Properties of a Polyvinyl Alcohol-Based Composite Using a Particle Swarm Optimized Support Vector Regression Algorithm

We developed particle swarm optimization-based support vector regression (PSVR) and ordinary linear regression (OLR) models for estimating the refractive index (n) and energy gap (E) of a polyvinyl alcohol composite. The n-PSVR model, which can estimate the refractive index of a polyvinyl alcohol composite using the energy gap as a descriptor, performed better than the n-OLR model in terms of root mean square error (RMSE) and mean absolute error (MAE) metrics. The E-PSVR model, which can predict the energy gap of a polyvinyl alcohol composite using its refractive index descriptor, outperformed the E-OLR model, which uses similar descriptor based on several performance measuring metrics. The n-PSVR and E-PSVR models were used to investigate the influences of sodium-based dysprosium oxide and benzoxazinone derivatives on the energy gaps of a polyvinyl alcohol polymer composite. The results agreed well with the measured values. The models had low mean absolute percentage errors after validation with external data. The precision demonstrated by these predictive models will enhance the tailoring of the optical properties of polyvinyl alcohol composites for the desired applications. Costs and experimental difficulties will be reduced.

Polymer Composites with 0.98 Transparencies and Small Optical Energy Band Gap Using a Promising Green Methodology: Structural and Optical Properties

In this work, a green approach was implemented to prepare polymer composites using polyvinyl alcohol polymer and the extract of black tea leaves (polyphenols) in a complex form with Co2+ ions. A range of techniques was used to characterize the Co2+ complex and polymer composite, such as Ultraviolet-visible (UV-Visible) spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The optical parameters of absorption edge, refractive index (n), dielectric properties including real and imaginary parts (εr, and εi) were also investigated. The FRIR and XRD spectra were used to examine the compatibility between the PVA polymer and Co2+-polyphenol complex. The extent of interaction was evidenced from the shifts and change in the intensity of the peaks. The relatively wide amorphous phase in PVA polymer increased upon insertion of the Co2+-polyphenol complex. The amorphous character of the Co2+ complex was emphasized with the appearance of a hump in the XRD pattern. From UV-Visible spectroscopy, the optical properties, such as absorption edge, refractive index (n), (εr), (εi), and bandgap energy (Eg) of parent PVA and composite films were specified. The Eg of PVA was lowered from 5.8 to 1.82 eV upon addition of 45 mL of Co2+-polyphenol complex. The N/m* was calculated from the optical dielectric function. Ultimately, various types of electronic transitions within the polymer composites were specified using Tauc's method. The direct bandgap (DBG) treatment of polymer composites with a developed amorphous phase is fundamental for commercialization in optoelectronic devices.
