Study on Structure, Thermal Behavior and Viscoelastic Properties of Nanodiamond-Reinforced Poly (vinyl alcohol) Nanocomposites

Physical Adsorption of Polyacrylic Acid on Boron Nitride Nanotube Surface and Enhanced Thermal Conductivity of Poly(vinyl alcohol) Composites

To fully tap into the potential of boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs), addressing their inherent insolubility was imperative. In this study, a water-soluble polymer, poly(acrylic acid) (PAA), was employed as a surface-active reagent, using an accessible and scalable approach. The physical properties and structure of PAA-BNNT were meticulously confirmed through valuable characterization techniques, encompassing X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. PAA-BNNT exhibited remarkable dispersion in water and demonstrated compatibility with the poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) matrix. When incorporating 30 wt % of PAA-BNNT (about 24.75 wt % net BNNT) into the PVA matrix, the thermal conductivity surged by over 21.7 times compared to pure PVA due to the uniform dispersion of high-concentration PAA-BNNT in the polymer matrix.

Development of Versatile, thermally stable, flexible, UV-resistant and antibacterial polyvinyl alcohol-Nanodiamonds composite for efficient food packaging

This research paper reports an enhancement of thermal, optical, mechanical and antibacterial activities of the Polyvinyl alcohol-Nanodiamonds (PVA-NDs) composite required for the food packaging industry. The synthesis of composites was done by the wet processing method. The large surface area of NDs facilitated the robust interaction between the hydroxyl group and macromolecular chains of PVA to enhance the hydrogen bonding of PVA with NDs rather than PVA molecules. Thus, a reduction in PVA diffraction peak intensity was reported. NDs improved the thermal stability by preventing the out-diffusion of volatile decomposition products of PVA. The results also revealed an enhancement in tensile strength (∼60 MPa) and ductility (∼180 %). PVA-NDs composite efficiently blocked the UVC (100 %), most of the part of the UVB (∼85 % above 300 nm), and UVA (∼58 %). Furthermore, enhanced antibacterial activities were reported for PVA-NDs composite against E. coli and S. aureus. NDs accumulated around the bacterial cells prevented essential cellular functions and led to death. Hence, this composite could be a promising candidate for safe, thermally stable, strong, flexible, transparent, UV- resistant antibacterial food packaging material.

Review of sustainable, eco-friendly, and conductive polymer nanocomposites for electronic and thermal applications: current status and future prospects

Biodegradable polymer nanocomposites (BPNCs) are advanced materials that have gained significant attention over the past 20 years due to their advantages over conventional polymers. BPNCs are eco-friendly, cost-effective, contamination-resistant, and tailorable for specific applications. Nevertheless, their usage is limited due to their unsatisfactory physical and mechanical properties. To improve these properties, nanofillers are incorporated into natural polymer matrices, to enhance mechanical durability, biodegradability, electrical conductivity, dielectric, and thermal properties. Despite the significant advances in the development of BPNCs over the last decades, our understanding of their dielectric, thermal, and electrical conductivity is still far from complete. This review paper aims to provide comprehensive insights into the fundamental principles behind these properties, the main synthesis, and characterization methods, and their functionality and performance. Moreover, the role of nanofillers in strength, permeability, thermal stability, biodegradability, heat transport, and electrical conductivity is discussed. Additionally, the paper explores the applications, challenges, and opportunities of BPNCs for electronic devices, thermal management, and food packaging. Finally, this paper highlights the benefits of BPNCs as biodegradable and biodecomposable functional materials to replace traditional plastics. Finally, the contemporary industrial advances based on an overview of the main stakeholders and recently commercialized products are addressed.

β-Cyclodextrin functionalized agarose-based hydrogels for multiple controlled drug delivery of ibuprofen

Agarose hydrogels are three-dimensional hydrophilic polymeric frameworks characterised by high water content, viscoelastic properties, and excellent ability as cell and drug delivery systems. However, their hydrophilicity as gel systems makes loading of hydrophobic drugs difficult and often ineffective. The incorporation of amphiphilic molecules (e.g. cyclodextrins) into hydrogels as hosts able to form inclusion complexes with hydrophobic drugs could be a possible solution. However, if not properly confined, the host compounds can get out of the network resulting in uncontrolled release. Therefore, in this work, β-cyclodextrins-based host-guest supramolecular hydrogel systems were synthesised, with β-cyclodextrins (β-CD) covalently bound to the polymeric network, preventing leakage of the host molecules. Hydrogels were prepared at two different β-CD-functionalized polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/agarose ratios, and characterised chemically and physically. Then ibuprofen, a drug often used as a gold standard in studies involving β-CD both in its hydrophilic and hydrophobic forms, was selected to investigate the release behavior of the synthesised hydrogels and the influence of β-CD on the release. The presence of β-CD linked to the polymeric 3D network ensured a higher and prolonged release profile for the hydrophobic drug and also seemed to have some influence on the hydrophilic one.

Development of dual-functional core-shell electrospun mats with controlled release of anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial agents for the treatment of corneal alkali burn injuries

In this study, a novel dual-drug carrier for the co-administration of an anti-inflammatory and antibiotic agent consisting of core-shell nanofibers for the treatment of cornea alkali burns was designed. The core-shell nanofibers were prepared via coaxial electrospinning of curcumin-loaded silk fibroin as the core and vancomycin-loaded chitosan/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as the shell. Electron microscopy (SEM and TEM) images confirmed the preparation of smooth, bead-free, and continuous fibers that formed clear core-shell structures. For further studies, nanofiber mats were cross-linked by heat treatment to avoid rapid disintegration in water and improve both mechanical properties and drug release. The release profile of curcumin and vancomycin indicated an initial burst release, continued by the extended release of both drugs within 72 hours. Rabbit corneal cells demonstrated high rates of proliferation when evaluated using a cell metabolism assay. Finally, the therapeutic efficiency of core/shell nanofibers in healing cornea alkali burn was studied by microscopic and macroscopic observation, fluorescence staining, and hematoxylin-eosin assay on rabbit eyes. The anti-inflammatory activity of fabricated fibers was evaluated by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and Immunofluorescence analysis. In conclusion, using a robust array of in vitro and in vivo experiments this study demonstrated the ability of the dual-drug carriers to promote corneal re-epithelialization, minimize inflammation, and inhibit corneal neovascularization. Since these parameters are critical to the healing of corneal wounds from alkali burns, we suggest that this discovery represents a promising future therapeutic agent that warrants further study in humans.

Tailoring diamondised nanocarbon-loaded poly(lactic acid) composites for highly electroactive surfaces: extrusion and characterisation of filaments for improved 3D-printed surfaces

A new 3D-printable composite has been developed dedicated to electroanalytical applications. Two types of diamondised nanocarbons - detonation nanodiamonds (DNDs) and boron-doped carbon nanowalls (BCNWs) - were added as fillers in poly(lactic acid) (PLA)-based composites to extrude 3D filaments. Carbon black served as a primary filler to reach high composite conductivity at low diamondised nanocarbon concentrations (0.01 to 0.2 S/cm, depending on the type and amount of filler). The aim was to thoroughly describe and understand the interactions between the composite components and how they affect the rheological, mechanical and thermal properties, and electrochemical characteristics of filaments and material extrusion printouts. The electrocatalytic properties of composite-based electrodes, fabricated with a simple 3D pen, were evaluated using multiple electrochemical techniques (cyclic and differential pulse voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy). The results showed that the addition of 5 wt% of any of the diamond-rich nanocarbons fillers significantly enhanced the redox process kinetics, leading to lower redox activation overpotentials compared with carbon black-loaded PLA. The detection of dopamine was successfully achieved through fabricated composite electrodes, exhibiting lower limits of detection (0.12 μM for DND and 0.18 μM for BCNW) compared with the reference CB-PLA electrodes (0.48 μM). The thermogravimetric results demonstrated that both DND and BCNW powders can accelerate thermal degradation. The presence of diamondised nanocarbons, regardless of their type, resulted in a decrease in the decomposition temperature of the composite. The study provides insight into the interactions between composite components and their impact on the electrochemical properties of 3D-printed surfaces, suggesting electroanalytic potential.

Insight into the release mechanisms of diflunisal and salicylic acid from poly(vinyl alcohol). The role of hydrogen bonding interactions

Diflunisal (5-(2,4-Difluorophenyl)salicylic acid, DIF), salicylic acid (SAL) derivative, which, on the one hand, is active pharmaceutical ingredient, on the other hand, belongs to the compounds exhibiting excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) behaviour was used to study the drug interactions with poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) matrix. For clarifying the nature and mechanisms of the drug-matrix interactions the salicylic acid (SAL) molecule was selected as the model active ESIPT compound, whose physicochemical properties in different media are well understood. The solute-solvent interactions (non-specific (dipole-dipole) versus specific (hydrogen bonding)) of DIF and SAL with different neat solvents were investigated using the steady-state spectroscopic technique. The solvent effect on spectral behaviours of DIF and SAL was analyzed based on the parametric solvent scales. In order to identify functional groups in the PVA matrices, determine the structure present in the studied molecule-PVA system and thus obtain information about the potential interactions between PVA and the studied molecules, the Raman spectra of pure PVA, SAL-PVA and DIF-PVA systems were measured. It has been shown that the molecular structure of the active substance entrapped in the polymer matrix affects the structure of the polymer, i.e., isotactic (SAL-PVA) versus syndiotactic (DIF-PVA) structure. The analysis of drug release kinetics revealed that the DIF is more strongly bound to PVA in comparison to SAL, which confirms conclusions drawn from the analysis of the Raman spectra i.e., the isotactic structure of SAL-PVA material results in a faster initial release process of weakly bound, located on the surface of the polymer SAL molecules.

Thermochemical Transition in Non-Hydrogen-Bonded Polymers and Theory of Latent Decomposition

Although thermosets and various biopolymers cannot be softened without being decomposed, the vast majority of thermoplastics are believed to exhibit thermal transitions solely related to physical alterations of their structure-a behavior typical of low molecular weight substances. In this study, Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and Thermogravimetry (TGA) were used to study the softening of four common non-hydrogen-bonded thermoplastic polymers (polypropylene, polypropylene-grafted-maleic anhydride, poly(vinyl chloride) and polystyrene) along with a hydrogen-bonded polymer as a reference, namely, poly(vinyl alcohol). It is shown that the softening of these polymers is a thermochemical transition. Based on fundamental concepts of statistical thermodynamics, it is proposed that the thermal transition behavior of all kinds of polymers is qualitatively the same: polymers cannot be softened without being decomposed (in resemblance with their incapability to boil) and the only difference between the various types of polymers is quantitative and lies in the extent of decomposition during softening. Decomposition seems to reach a local maximum during softening; however, it is predicted that polymers constantly decompose even at room temperature and, by heating, (sensible) decomposition is not initiated but simply accelerated. The term "latent decomposition" is proposed to describe this concept.

Synergistic effect of barium titanate nanoparticles and graphene quantum dots on the dielectric properties and conductivity of poly(vinylidenefluoride-co-hexafluoroethylene) films

PVDF-HFP/BaTiO₃/GQDs polymer nanocomposite films with good flexibility and high dielectric constant (ϵ) at low frequency were prepared via solution casting technique. Different compositions of BaTiO₃ (non-conducting ceramic nanofiller) and Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) (conducting nanofiller) utilized as co-filler were embedded in poly (vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoroethylene) (PVDF-HFP) polymer matrix. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) techniques were employed to characterize the prepared nanocomposite films. The mechanical properties of PVDF-HFP/BaTiO₃/GQDs nanocomposite films were also investigated. Dielectric properties of nanocomposite films such as dielectric constant (ϵ), dielectric loss (tanδ) and AC conductivity ( σ_ac ) were also determined as a function of frequency and temperature. Highest ϵ with relatively low tanδ obtained at low frequency for maximum temperature in all polymer nanocomposite films. The σ_ac increases from lower (100 Hz) to higher frequency up to 100 kHz and drops to zero for the further increment of frequency. These results suggest that the PVDF-HFP/BaTiO₃/GQDs nanocomposites are the most promising materials for energy storage applications.

Durability of Biodegradable Polymer Nanocomposites

Biodegradable polymers (BP) are often regarded as the materials of the future, which address the rising environmental concerns. The advancement of biorefineries and sustainable technologies has yielded various BP with excellent properties comparable to commodity plastics. Water resistance, high dimensional stability, processability and excellent physicochemical properties limit the reviewed materials to biodegradable polyesters and modified compositions of starch and cellulose, both known for their abundance and relatively low price. The addition of different nanofillers and preparation of polymer nanocomposites can effectively improve BP with controlled functional properties and change the rate of degradation. The lack of data on the durability of biodegradable polymer nanocomposites (BPN) has been the motivation for the current review that summarizes recent literature data on environmental ageing of BPN and the role of nanofillers, their basic engineering properties and potential applications. Various durability tests discussed thermal ageing, photo-oxidative ageing, water absorption, hygrothermal ageing and creep testing. It was discussed that incorporating nanofillers into BP could attenuate the loss of mechanical properties and improve durability. Although, in the case of poor dispersion, the addition of the nanofillers can lead to even faster degradation, depending on the structural integrity and the state of interfacial adhesion. Selected models that describe the durability performance of BPN were considered in the review. These can be applied as a practical tool to design BPN with tailored property degradationand durability.
