A Review on Impedimetric and Voltammetric Analysis Based on Polypyrrole Conducting Polymers for Electrochemical Sensing Applications

Preparation and Electrochromic Properties of MnO2/PPy Composite Films with Coral-like Structures

MnO2/polypyrrole (PPy) composite films were deposited on fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) conductive glasses by a two-step wet-chemical method, including electrochemical deposition and chemical bath deposition (CBD). The porous MnO2 films were first grown on FTO glasses by an electrodeposition method. Second, polypyrrole nanoparticles were polymerized by the oxidation-reduction reaction between MnO2 and pyrrole, using the presynthesized MnO2 as the skeleton. Then, MnO2/PPy composite films with coral-like structures were obtained. The electrochemical and electrochromic (EC) properties of the prepared films were investigated. The results show that, compared to the single MnO2 or PPy film, the MnO2/PPy composite film has a larger optical modulation (67.3% at a wavelength of 900 nm), faster response times (4 s for coloration and 3 s for bleaching), and a higher coloration efficiency (218.16 cm2·C-1). The high coloration efficiency attests to the exceptional performance of the composite film in converting electrical signals into vivid color changes. The electrochemical stability test results show that the composite film maintains a stable EC performance after 200 coloration/bleaching cycles. The coral-like structures of the composite film are responsible for the better EC properties.

A new insight into the early detection of HER2 protein in breast cancer patients with a focus on electrochemical biosensors approaches: A review

Breast cancer is one of the leading causes of death in women and is a prevalent kind of cancerous growth, representing a substantial risk to women's health. Early detection of breast cancer is essential for effective treatment and improved survival rates. Biomarkers, active substances that signal the existence and advancement of a tumor, play a significant role in the early detection of breast cancer. Hence, accurate identification of biomarkers for tumors is crucial for diagnosing and treating breast cancer. However, the primary diagnostic methods used for the detection of breast cancer require specific equipment, skilled professionals, and specialized analysis, leading to elevated detection expenses. Regarding this obstacle, recent studies emphasize electrochemical biosensors as more advanced and sensitive detection tools compared to traditional methods. Electrochemical biosensors are employed to identify biomarkers that act as unique indicators for the onset, recurrence, and monitoring of therapeutic interventions for breast cancer. This study aims to provide a summary of the electrochemical biosensors that have been employed for the detection of breast cancer at an early stage over the past decade. Initially, the text provides concise information about breast cancer and tumor biomarkers. Subsequently, an in-depth analysis is conducted to systematically review the progress of electrochemical biosensors developed for the stable, specific, and sensitive identification of biomarkers associated with breast cancer. Particular emphasis was given to crucial clinical biomarkers, specifically the human epidermal growth factor receptor-2 (HER2). The analysis then explores the limitations and challenges inherent in the design of effective biosensors for diagnosing and treating breast cancer. Ultimately, we provided an overview of future research directions and concluded by outlining the advantages of electrochemical biosensor approaches.

Subtle adjustment of the cyclic potential on electro-activated glassy carbon electrodes for sensitive sensing of methyl parathion

Facile electro-activated glassy carbon electrodes (e-GCEs), which are prepared in electrolyte solution with a certain potential for a few seconds, have been verified to improve analytical performance toward not a few electro-active molecules recently. Nevertheless, how and why the potential plays an important role is not clear, and has even not received enough consideration. In this paper, we found that the mode and the range of applied potential significantly impacted the sensitivity of methyl parathion (MP), which is a typical pesticide with the electro-active group of -NO2. Compared with constant potential, the e-GCE with cyclic potential provided a much more stable baseline during MP detection. Additionally, the electro-oxidation peak current of MP at around -0.1 V on it was higher than another changeable potential (constant current). What's more interesting, with cyclic potential for 50 segments from -2 to 1.5 V, the peak current value increased by 30 times in comparison with a bare GCE, but only 2 times from -2 to 1 V. Then after systematic investigation including structures of the electrode surface and functional groups, we speculated that the produced group of O-CO in the process of activation and remaining groups of C-O and CO on the bare GCE surface are beneficial for adsorbing MP molecules leading to enhanced peak current. Employing the proposed e-GCE, the limit of detection of MP reached 0.015 μM and the reproducibility was perfect. This work elucidates the potent impact of electro-activation potential parameters on electroanalysis behaviors.

Montmorillonite/Poly(Pyrrole) for Low-Cost Supercapacitor Electrode Hybrid Materials

Conductive polymers such as polypyrrole have been widely used as pseudo-capacitive electrodes for supercapacitors. This work demonstrates a simple method to improve the performance of conductive polymer electrodes by adding montmorillonite in order to perform capacitive behavior. Conductive composite polymers (CCPs) based on montmorillonite/polypyrrole (MMT/PPy(Cl)) have been synthesized by polymerization using FeCl3 as an oxidizing agent. During the preparation of CCP, the effect of MMT/pyrrole mass ratio and the influence of the amount of added H+ and temperature of the synthesis medium on the electrochemical performance of the composite have been investigated. The investigation associated with conductivity measurement allowed us to determine the best conditions to reach a high specific capacitance of 465 F gr-1 measured by cyclic voltammetry with respect to the CCP synthesized at ambient temperature (220 F gr-1) and a 35% increase in capacity compared to its homologue synthesized in neutral conditions at a low temperature. These performances have been advantageously correlated both to the edge acidity of the host material and to the evolution of its conductivity according to the preparation conditions. The galvanostatic charge/discharge tests also confirm the stability of the obtained composite, and a capacitance of 325 F g-1 for the best CCP is recorded with a regime of 1 A g-1. In addition, the durability of the device shows that the proposed material has a relatively good stability during cycling.

Cobalt etched graphite felt electrode for enhanced removal of organic pollutant in aqueous solution with a solid polymer electrolyte

In this study, cobalt etched graphite felt electrodes were produced using a simple etching technique. It was used in combination with a solid polymer electrolyte (SPE) for the degradation of the target contaminant Orange II by Electro-Fenton (EF) technique in low conductivity water. In this method, 94% of Orange II in low conductivity water was removed in 90 min. The characterization analysis substantiates the hypothesis that the electrodes produced exhibit a three-dimensional porous structure, augmented defect concentration, and enhanced electron transfer capability. In addition, the potential reaction mechanism was inferred from the radical quenching experiments, and hydroxyl radicals (·OH) were deemed the main reactive substances. The combination of cobalt etched graphite felt electrodes with SPE demonstrates remarkable efficacy in the treatment of organic wastewater characterized by low electrical conductivity.

Advances and Challenges in Nanomaterial-Based Electrochemical Immunosensors for Small Cell Lung Cancer Biomarker Neuron-Specific Enolase

Early and rapid detection of neuron-specific enolase (NSE) is highly significant, as it is putative biomarker for small-cell lung cancer as well as COVID-19. Electrochemical techniques have attracted substantial attention for the early detection of cancer biomarkers due to the important properties of simplicity, high sensitivity, specificity, low cost, and point-of-care detection. This work reviews the clinically relevant labeled and label-free electrochemical immunosensors developed so far for the analysis of NSE. The prevailing role of nanostructured materials as electrode matrices is thoroughly discussed. Subsequently, the key performances of various immunoassays are critically evaluated in terms of limit of detection, linear ranges, and incubation time for clinical translation. Electrochemical techniques coupled with screen-printed electrodes developing market level commercialization of NSE sensors is also discussed. Finally, the review concludes with the current challenges associated with available methods and provides a future outlook toward commercialization opportunities for easy detection of NSE.

Layer-by-Layer Combination of MWCNTs and Poly(ferulic acid) as Electrochemical Platform for Hesperidin Quantification

The electrochemical polymerization of suitable monomers is a powerful way to create voltammetric sensors with improved responses to a target analyte. Nonconductive polymers based on phenolic acids were successfully combined with carbon nanomaterials to obtain sufficient conductivity and high surface area of the electrode. Glassy carbon electrodes (GCE) modified with multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and electropolymerized ferulic acid (FA) were developed for the sensitive quantification of hesperidin. The optimized conditions of FA electropolymerization in basic medium (15 cycles from -0.2 to 1.0 V at 100 mV s^-1 in 250 µmol L^-1 monomer solution in 0.1 mol L^-1 NaOH) were found using the voltammetric response of hesperidin. The polymer-modified electrode exhibited a high electroactive surface area (1.14 ± 0.05 cm² vs. 0.75 ± 0.03 and 0.089 ± 0.003 cm² for MWCNTs/GCE and bare GCE, respectively) and decreased in the charge transfer resistance (21.4 ± 0.9 kΩ vs. 72 ± 3 kΩ for bare GCE). Under optimized conditions, hesperidin linear dynamic ranges of 0.025-1.0 and 1.0-10 µmol L^-1 with a detection limit of 7.0 nmol L^-1 were achieved, which were the best ones among those reported to date. The developed electrode was tested on orange juice and compared with chromatography.

Application of Polypyrrole-Based Electrochemical Biosensor for the Early Diagnosis of Colorectal Cancer

Although colorectal cancer (CRC) is easy to treat surgically and can be combined with postoperative chemotherapy, its five-year survival rate is still not optimistic. Therefore, developing sensitive, efficient, and compliant detection technology is essential to diagnose CRC at an early stage, providing more opportunities for effective treatment and intervention. Currently, the widely used clinical CRC detection methods include endoscopy, stool examination, imaging modalities, and tumor biomarker detection; among them, blood biomarkers, a noninvasive strategy for CRC screening, have shown significant potential for early diagnosis, prediction, prognosis, and staging of cancer. As shown by recent studies, electrochemical biosensors have attracted extensive attention for the detection of blood biomarkers because of their advantages of being cost-effective and having sound sensitivity, good versatility, high selectivity, and a fast response. Among these, nano-conductive polymer materials, especially the conductive polymer polypyrrole (PPy), have been broadly applied to improve sensing performance due to their excellent electrical properties and the flexibility of their surface properties, as well as their easy preparation and functionalization and good biocompatibility. This review mainly discusses the characteristics of PPy-based biosensors, their synthetic methods, and their application for the detection of CRC biomarkers. Finally, the opportunities and challenges related to the use of PPy-based sensors for diagnosing CRC are also discussed.

Electrochemical DNA sensors for drug determination

In this review, recent achievements in the development of the DNA biosensors developed for the drug determination have been presented with particular emphasis to the main principles of their assembling and signal measurement approaches. The design of the DNA sensors is considered with characterization of auxiliary components and their necessity for the biosensor operation. Carbon nanomaterials, metals and their complexes as well as electropolymerized polymers are briefly described in the assembly of DNA sensors. The performance of the DNA sensors is summarized within 2017-2022 for various drugs and factors influencing the sensitivity and selectivity of the response are discussed. Special attention is paid to the mechanism of the signal generation and possible drawbacks in the analysis of real samples.

Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy in the Characterisation and Application of Modified Electrodes for Electrochemical Sensors and Biosensors

Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy is finding increasing use in electrochemical sensors and biosensors, both in their characterisation, including during successive phases of sensor construction, and in application as a quantitative determination technique. Much of the published work continues to make little use of all the information that can be furnished by full physical modelling and analysis of the impedance spectra, and thus does not throw more than a superficial light on the processes occurring. Analysis is often restricted to estimating values of charge transfer resistances without interpretation and ignoring other electrical equivalent circuit components. In this article, the important basics of electrochemical impedance for electrochemical sensors and biosensors are presented, focussing on the necessary electrical circuit elements. This is followed by examples of its use in characterisation and in electroanalytical applications, at the same time demonstrating how fuller use can be made of the information obtained from complete modelling and analysis of the data in the spectra, the values of the circuit components and their physical meaning. The future outlook for electrochemical impedance in the sensing field is discussed.
