Stability of Polymeric Membranes to UV Exposure before and after Coating with TiO2 Nanoparticles

Smart Indicator Film Based on Sodium Alginate/Polyvinyl Alcohol/TiO2 Containing Purple Garlic Peel Extract for Visual Monitoring of Beef Freshness

The aim of this study was to prepare a novel pH-sensitive smart film based on the addition of purple garlic peel extract (PGE) and TiO2 nanoparticles in a sodium alginate (SA)/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) matrix to monitor the freshness of beef. FT-IR spectroscopy revealed the formation of stronger interaction forces between PVA/SA, PGE, and TiO2 nanoparticles, which showed good compatibility. In addition, the addition of PGE improved the tensile strength and elongation at break of the composite film, especially in different pH environments, and the color response was obvious. The addition of 1% TiO2 nanoparticles significantly improved the mechanical properties of the film, as well as the light barrier properties of the film. PGE could effectively be uniformly dispersed into the composite film, but it also had a certain slow-release effect on the release of PGE. PGE had high sensitivity under different pH conditions with rich color changes, and the color showed a clear color change from red to yellow-green when the pH increased from 1 to 14. The same change was observed when it was added to the film. In particular, by applying this film to the process of beef preservation, we judged the freshness of beef by monitoring the changes in the TVB-N value and pH value during the storage process of beef and found that the film showed obvious color changes during the storage process of beef, from blue (indicating freshness) to red (indicating non-freshness), and finally to yellow-green (indicating deterioration), which indicated that the color change of the film and the freshness of the beef maintained a highly consistent.

Loose Nanofiltration Membrane Incorporating CeZnFe Layered Double Hydroxide with Enhanced Dye/Salt Separation Performance and Self-Cleaning Ability

The high-salinity wastewater from the textile industry faces a significant challenge in effectively separating dyes and salts. In this study, a CeZnFe-layered double hydroxide (LDH)-incorporated nanofiltration (LNF) membrane was fabricated using the conventional interfacial polymerization (IP) technique to fractionate dyes and salts within the wastewater. The impact of CeZnFe LDH on various aspects of membrane performance was examined, including water flux, dye removal efficiency, dye/salt separation capability, self-cleaning ability, and membrane integrity. The addition of LDHs resulted in improved membrane surface hydrophilicity, thereby enhancing water flux. The optimized TFN membrane (0.050 wt% LDH in PIP solution) significantly improved pure water flux, exceeding 150%. All TFN membranes exhibited excellent performance in dye and salt fractionation (93% for Congo red, 2.6% for NaCl, and 40.7% for Na2SO4). Also, excellent self-cleaning ability was observed for the optimized membrane, exhibiting a remarkable water flux recovery rate after three operation cycles. Moreover, including CeZnFe LDH in the optimized TFN membrane played a significant role in enhancing membrane integrity. This study provides new inspiration for fabricating self-cleaning loose NF membranes using CeZnFe LDH for effective dye/salt separation.

Poly(vinylidene fluoride) membrane with immobilized TiO2 for degradation of steroid hormone micropollutants in a photocatalytic membrane reactor

The lack of effective technologies to remove steroid hormones (SHs) from aquatic systems is a critical issue for both environment and public health. The performance of a flow-through photocatalytic membrane reactor (PMR) with TiO₂ immobilized on a photostable poly(vinylidene fluoride) membrane (PVDF-TiO₂) was evaluated in the context of SHs degradation at concentrations from 0.05 to 1000 µg/L under UV exposure (365 nm). A comprehensive investigation into the membrane preparation approach, including varying the surface Ti content and distribution, and membrane pore size, was conducted to gain insights on the rate-limiting steps for the SHs degradation. Increasing surface Ti content from 4 % to 6.5 % enhanced the 17β-estradiol (E2) degradation from 46 ± 12-81 ± 6 %. Apparent degradation kinetics were independent of both TiO₂ homogeneity and membrane pore size (0.1-0.45 µm). With optimized conditions, E2 removal was higher than 96 % at environmentally relevant feed concentration (100 ng/L), a flux of 60 L/m²h, 25 mW/cm², and 6.5 % Ti. These results indicated that the E2 degradation on the PVDF-TiO₂ membrane was limited by the catalyst content and light penetration depth. Further exploration of novel TiO₂ immobilization approach that can offer a larger catalyst content and light penetration is required to improve the micropollutant removal efficiency in PMR.

A Review of Titanium Dioxide (TiO2)-Based Photocatalyst for Oilfield-Produced Water Treatment

Oilfield produced water (OPW) has become a primary environmental concern due to the high concentration of dissolved organic pollutants that lead to bioaccumulation with high toxicity, resistance to biodegradation, carcinogenicity, and the inhibition of reproduction, endocrine, and non-endocrine systems in aquatic biota. Photodegradation using photocatalysts has been considered as a promising technology to sustainably resolve OPW pollutants due to its benefits, including not requiring additional chemicals and producing a harmless compound as the result of pollutant photodegradation. Currently, titanium dioxide (TiO₂) has gained great attention as a promising photocatalyst due to its beneficial properties among the other photocatalysts, such as excellent optical and electronic properties, high chemical stability, low cost, non-toxicity, and eco-friendliness. However, the photoactivity of TiO₂ is still inhibited because it has a wide band gap and a low quantum field. Hence, the modification approaches for TiO₂ can improve its properties in terms of the photocatalytic ability, which would likely boost the charge carrier transfer, prevent the recombination of electrons and holes, and enhance the visible light response. In this review, we provide an overview of several routes for modifying TiO₂. The as-improved photocatalytic performance of the modified TiO₂ with regard to OPW treatment is reviewed. The stability of modified TiO₂ was also studied. The future perspective and challenges in developing the modification of TiO₂-based photocatalysts are explained.
