Recent progress in the development of encapsulated fertilizers for time-controlled release

This review describes the latest achievements in the development of encapsulated controlled-release fertilizers, which encompasses sustainability issues in agriculture. The research community's interest in this particular area of science has doubled over the last couple of years due to the yearly increasing complexity of the food and supply situation, as well as maintaining the development of modern society in the era of population outbreak. This review covers demand in timely systematization and comprehensive analysis of emerging research in so-called "smart fertilizers" that release mineral components in accordance with the needs for nutrients classified into controlled- and slow-release fertilizers (CRFs and SRFs). Along with the thoroughly selected fundamental studies published in this area, the review specially focuses on the materials-based classification, emphasizing the importance of the host matrix in the time-controlled release of dopant. This substantially differentiates our review and renders scientific novelty and relevancy to it. The review is divided into sections, dealing with the types of slow- and controlled-release fertilizers each, and supplemented with the critical view on their usage. All data regarding encapsulated fertilizers in this review are systematized for the convenience of the readership when becoming familiarized with the latest achievements in this area. Perspectives and potential pathways are also described to recommend and guide researchers working on the related academic fields.

A Comprehensive Approach Combining Short-Chain Polyphosphate and Bacterial Biostimulants for Effective Nutrient Solubilization and Enhanced Wheat Growth

Phosphorus constitutes a crucial macronutrient for crop growth, yet its availability often limits food production. Efficient phosphorus management is crucial for enhancing crop yields and ensuring food security. This study aimed to enhance the efficiency of a short-chain polyphosphate (PolyP) fertilizer by integrating it with plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) to improve nutrient solubilization and wheat growth. Specifically, the study investigated the effects of various bacterial strains on wheat germination and growth when used in conjunction with PolyP. To achieve this, a greenhouse experiment was conducted in which the wheat rhizosphere was amended with a short-chain PolyP fertilizer. Based on the morphological aspect, eight bacteria, designated P1 to P8, were isolated and further characterized. Plant growth-promoting traits were observed in all bacterial strains, as they presented the ability to produce Indole Acetic Acid (IAA) in significant amounts ranging from 7.5 ± 0.3 µg/mL to 44.1 ± 2 µg/mL, expressed by B. tropicus P4 and P. soyae P1, respectively. They also produced ammonia, hydrogen cyanide (HCN), and siderophores. Their effect against the plant pathogen Fusarium culmorum was also assessed, with P. reinekei P2 demonstrating the highest biocontrol activity as it presented a total inhibitory effect. Additionally, some strains exhibited the ability to solubilize/hydrolyze phosphorus, potassium, and zinc. In vivo, the initial growth potential of wheat seeds indicated that those inoculated with the isolated strains exhibited elevated germination rates and enhanced root growth. Based on their plant growth-promoting traits and performance in the germination assay, three strains were selected for producing the best results, specifically phosphorus hydrolyzation/solubilization, zinc solubilization, IAA production, HCN, and siderophores production. Wheat seeds were inoculated by drenching in a bacterial suspension containing 1010 CFU/mL of log phase culture, and an in planta bioassay was conducted in a growth chamber using three selected strains (Pseudomonas soyae P1, Pseudomonas reinekei P2, and Bacillus tropicus P4), applied either individually or with PolyP on a P-deficient soil (28 mg/kg of P Olsen). Our findings demonstrated that the combination of Pseudomonas soyae P1 and PolyP achieved the highest shoot biomass, averaging 41.99 ± 0.87 g. Notably, applying P. soyae P1 or Bacillus tropicus P4 alone yielded similar results to the use of PolyP alone. At the heading growth stage, the combination of Bacillus tropicus P4 and PolyP significantly increased the Chlorophyll Content Index (CCI) to 37.02 µmol/m2, outperforming both PolyP alone (24.07 µmol/m2) and the control (23.06 µmol/m2). This study presents an innovative approach combining short-chain PolyP with bacterial biostimulants to enhance nutrient availability and plant growth. By identifying and characterizing effective bacterial strains, it offers a sustainable alternative to conventional fertilizers.

Biodegradable Dextrin-Based Microgels for Slow Release of Dual Fertilizers for Sustainable Agriculture

In this research, we report dextrin-based biodegradable microgels (PDXE MGs) having phosphate-based cross-linking units for slow release of urea and a potential P source to improve fertilization. PDXE MGs (∼200 nm) are synthesized by cross-linking the lauroyl-functionalized dextrin chains with sodium tripolyphosphate. The developed PDXE MGs exhibit high loading (∼10%) and encapsulation efficiency (∼88%) for urea. It is observed that functionalization of PDXE MGs with lauroyl chains slows down the release of urea (90% in ∼24 days) as compared to nonfunctionalized microgels (PDX MGs) (99% in ∼17 days) in water. Further studies of the developed formulation display that Urea@PDXE MGs significantly boost maize seed germination and overall plant growth as compared to pure urea fertilizer. Moreover, analysis of maize leaves obtained from plants treated with Urea@PDXE MGs reveals 3.5 ± 0.3% nitrogen content and 90 ± 0.7 mg/g chlorophyll content. These values are significantly higher than 1.4 ± 0.6% nitrogen content and 48 ± 0.05 mg/g chlorophyll content obtained by using bare urea. Further, acid phosphatase activity in roots is reduced upon treatment with PDXE MGs and Urea@PDXE MGs, suggesting the availability of P upon degradation of PDXE MGs by the amylase enzyme in soil. These experimental results present the developed microgel-based biodegradable formulation with a slow release feature as a potential candidate to move toward sustainable agriculture practices.

PHA is not just a bioplastic!

Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) have evolved into versatile biopolymers, transcending their origins as mere bioplastics. This extensive review delves into the multifaceted landscape of PHA applications, shedding light on the diverse industries that have harnessed their potential. PHA has proven to be an invaluable eco-conscious option for packaging materials, finding use in films foams, paper coatings and even straws. In the textile industry, PHA offers a sustainable alternative, while its application as a carbon source for denitrification in wastewater treatment showcases its versatility in environmental remediation. In addition, PHA has made notable contributions to the medical and consumer sectors, with various roles ranging from 3D printing, tissue engineering implants, and cell growth matrices to drug delivery carriers, and cosmetic products. Through metabolic engineering efforts, PHA can be fine-tuned to align with the specific requirements of each industry, enabling the customization of material properties such as ductility, elasticity, thermal conductivity, and transparency. To unleash PHA's full potential, bridging the gap between research and commercial viability is paramount. Successful PHA production scale-up hinges on establishing direct supply chains to specific application domains, including packaging, food and beverage materials, medical devices, and agriculture. This review underscores that PHA's future rests on ongoing exploration across these industries and more, paving the way for PHA to supplant conventional plastics and foster a circular economy.
