Self-Healing Hydrogels Fabricated by Introducing Antibacterial Long-Chain Alkyl Quaternary Ammonium Salt into Marine-Derived Polysaccharides for Wound Healing

Synthesis of N-isonicotinic sulfonate chitosan and its antibiofilm activity against E. coli and S.aureus

N-(sodium 2-hydroxypropylsulfonate) chitosan (HSCS), N-sulfonate chitosan (SCS) and N-isonicotinic sulfonate chitosan (ISCS) were prepared. The structures of the prepared chitosan derivatives were characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy and elemental analysis (EA). Antibacterial and antibiofilm activities of these chitosan derivatives were evaluated in vitro. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of HSCS and SCS against Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) were 0.625 mg/mL and 0.156 mg/mL, respectively. ISCS exhibited MIC values of 0.313 mg/mL and 0.078 mg/mL against E. coli and S. aureus, respectively. ISCS demonstrated superior antibacterial and antibiofilm properties compared to SCS and HSCS. These findings suggest that the incorporation of a pyridine structure into sulfonate chitosan enhances its antibacterial and antibiofilm activities, and the prepared ISCS has a promising application prospect for controlling the reproduction of microorganisms in the field of food packaging.

Recent advances of chitosan as a hemostatic material: Hemostatic mechanism, material design and prospective application

Uncontrolled hemorrhage arising from surgery or trauma may cause morbidity and even mortality. Therefore, facilitating control of severe bleeding is imperative for health care worldwide. Among diverse hemostatic materials, chitosan (CS) is becoming the most promising material owing to its non-toxic feature, as well as inherently hemostatic performance. However, further enhancing hemostatic property of CS-based materials without compromising more beneficial functions remains a challenge. In this review, representative hemostatic mechanisms of CS-based materials are firstly discussed in detail, mostly including red blood cells (RBCs) aggregation, platelet adherence and aggregation, as well as interaction with plasma proteins. Also, various forms (involving powder/particle, sponge, hydrogel, nanofiber, and other forms) of CS-based hemostatic materials are systematically summarized, mainly focusing on their design and preparation, characteristics, and comparative analysis of various forms. In addition, varied hemostatic applications are described in detail, such as skin wound hemostasis, liver hemostasis, artery hemostasis, and heart hemostasis. Finally, current challenges and future directions of functional design of CS-based hemostatic materials in diverse hemostatic applications are proposed to inspire more intensive researches.

Wound Gel with Antimicrobial Effects Based on Polyvinyl Alcohol and Functional Aryloxycyclotriphosphazene

A silver-containing gel based on polyvinyl alcohol and aryloxycyclotriphosphazene containing β-carboxyethenylphenoxy and p-formylphenoxy groups has been developed. Phosphazene was synthesized via the Doebner reaction from hexakis[(4-formyl)phenoxy]cyclotriphosphazene and malonic acid and characterized by ¹H, ¹³C, and ³¹P NMR spectroscopy and MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry. The study of the gel using scanning electron microscopy showed that the gel contains open pores and can absorb wound exudate. The maximum water absorption capacity of the gel was 272%, which was reached after 80 min of testing. The antimicrobial activity of the obtained silver-containing gel was evaluated using the diffusion method. The gel was found to inhibit the growth of the main microorganisms in contact with the skin: the bacteria S. aureus, P. aeruginosa, E. coli, B. subtilis, S. epidermidis, and C. stationis and the fungus C. albicans. The study of the wound-healing effect of the gel in vivo showed a decrease in the wound area of the rabbit hind limb by 91.43% (p < 0.05) on the 10th day of observation and a decrease in the content of C-reactive protein in the rabbit blood serum by 1.3 times (p < 0.05).
