Synthesis and Characterization of a New Alginate/Carrageenan Crosslinked Biopolymer and Study of the Antibacterial, Antioxidant, and Anticancer Performance of Its Mn(II), Fe(III), Ni(II), and Cu(II) Polymeric Complexes

New Nanosized V(III), Fe(III), and Ni(II) Complexes Comprising Schiff Base and 2-Amino-4-Methyl Pyrimidine: Synthesis, Properties, and Biological Activity

A new synthesis of mixed ligand complexes vanadium(III), iron(III), and nickel(II), [M : L1 : L2], where L1 = Schiff base 2-((E)-((4-(((E)-benzylidene)amino)phenyl)imino)methyl)-naphthalene-1-ol (C24H18N2O) as for L2 = AMPY 2-amino-4-methyl pyrimidine (C5H7N3) were prepared in powder and investigated. Element analysis, molar conductivity, FT-IR, UV-vis, and magnetic susceptibility values have been acquired to describe the generated complexes. The values of vanadium(III), iron(III), and nickel(II) compounds are, respectively, 2.88 BM, 5.96 BM, and 2.92 BM, demonstrating that all compounds conform to the recommended octahedral geometry. Thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) is used to further assess the complexes and establish the temperature stability and degradation of the metal complexes. The calculations abstracted from XRD patterns propose nanosized complexes (average size 29-50 nm). The microstructures of the samples have also been investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The disc diffusion method was used to assess and analyze the inhibition of the growth of compounds against harmful bacterial and fungal strains. The prepared complexes were tested against three strains of bacteria, one gram-positive strain (Bacillus subtilis), two gram-negative strains (Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa), and one fungus (Aspergillus fumigatus). The complexes inferred antimicrobial activity against the studied organisms. Specifically, vanadium(III) and nickel(II) are more effective than iron(III), making them promising drugs.

Development of biodegradable packaging films from carboxymethyl cellulose and oxidised natural rubber latex

The present study investigates the biopolymer packaging film developed from carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) with varying concentrations of natural rubber latex (NR) and oxidised natural rubber latex (ONR) using the solvent casting method. The physicochemical properties of the CMC/NR and CMC/ONR film samples were characterised using FTIR, TG/DTA, DSC, SEM, and XRD analysis. The increased concentration of NR and ONR helped to enhance mechanical characteristics, superior UV resistance, enhanced resistance to oxygen and water vapour penetration, improved dimensional stability, and a reduction in the moisture retention ability of the film samples. The CMC sample film, incorporated with 1.5 g ONR, was found to have more than a 100 % increase in the tensile strength. The tensile value increased from 21.56 MPa to 48.36 MPa, with the highest young modulus of 0.73 GPa and elastic stability of 7.14 %. The incorporation of NR and ONR significantly reduced the super water absorbency nature of the CMC film, and the moisture content values reduced from 21.6 % to ≅ 0.15 % for ONR-incorporated film. Additionally, the CMC/NR and CMC/ONR films exhibited high optical transparency values and were found to be fast biodegradable, substantiating their potential use in various packaging applications. Application of these materials in perishable fruit packaging has shown significant enhancement in shelf life, highlighting their practical efficiency and potential for sustainable packaging solutions.

Highly Efficient Biosorption of Cationic Dyes via Biopolymeric Adsorbent-Material-Based Pectin Extract Polysaccharide and Carrageenan Grafted to Cellulosic Nonwoven Textile

Water scarcity and contamination have emerged as critical global challenges, requiring the development of effective and sustainable solutions for the treatment of contaminated water. Recently, functionalized polymer biomaterials have garnered significant interest because of their potential for a wide range of water treatment applications. Accordingly, this paper highlights the design of a new adsorbent material based on a cellulosic nonwoven textile grafted with two extracted biopolymers. The layer-by-layer grafting technique was used for the polyelectrolyte multi-layer (PEM) biosorbent production. Firstly, we extracted a Suaeda fruticosa polysaccharide (SFP) and confirmed its pectin-like polysaccharide structure via SEC, NMR spectroscopy, and chemical composition analyses. Afterward, the grafting was designed via an alternating multi-deposition of layers of SFP polymer and carrageenan crosslinked with 1,2,3,4-butanetetracarboxylic acid (BTCA). FT-IR and SEM were used to characterize the chemical and morphological characteristics of the designed material. Chemical grafting via polyesterification reactions of the PEM biosorbent was confirmed through FT-IR analysis. SEM revealed the total filling of material microspaces with layers of grafted biopolymers and a rougher surface morphology. The assessment of the swelling behavior revealed a significant increase in the hydrophilicity of the produced adsorbent system, a required property for efficient sorption potential. The evaluation of the adsorption capabilities using the methylene blue (MB) as cationic dye was conducted in various experimental settings, changing factors such as the pH, time, temperature, and initial concentration of dye. For the untreated and grafted materials, the greatest adsorbed amounts of MB were 130.6 mg/g and 802.6 mg/g, respectively (pH = 4, T = 22 C, duration = 120 min, and dye concentration = 600 mg/L). The high adsorption performance, compared to other reported materials, was due to the presence of a large number of hydroxyl, sulfonate, and carboxylic functional groups in the biosorbent polymeric system. The adsorption process fitted well with the pseudo-first-order kinetic model and Langmuir/Temkin adsorption isotherms. This newly developed multi-layered biosorbent shows promise as an excellent adsorption resultant and cheap-cost/easy preparation alternative for treating industrial wastewater.

Benzothiazole Derivatives of Chitosan and Their Derived Nanoparticles: Synthesis and In Vitro and In Vivo Antibacterial Effects

In this work, we focused on synthesizing and assessing novel chitosan-based antibacterial polymers and their nanoparticles by incorporating benzothiazole substituents. The growing resistance to antibiotics has necessitated the search for alternative antimicrobial compounds. This study aimed to synthesize and evaluate chitosan-based polymers and nanoparticles with benzothiazole substituents for their antibacterial properties and toxicity. The benzothiazole derivatives of chitosan and their nanoparticles were synthesized through electrochemical coupling. The in vivo antibacterial efficacy was tested on white rats with induced peritonitis using a microbial suspension containing S. aureus and E. coli. Additionally, in vitro and in vivo toxicity assessments were conducted. The chitosan-based antibacterial systems showed significant in vivo antibacterial activity, surpassing that of unmodified chitosan and commercial antibiotics. Moreover, the toxicity studies revealed low toxicity levels of the synthesized derivatives, which did not differ significantly from native chitosan. The synthesized chitosan-based polymers and nanoparticles demonstrated potent antibacterial activity and low toxicity, highlighting their potential as effective alternatives to traditional antibiotics. Further investigations in pharmacology and preclinical trials are recommended to explore their application in clinical settings.
