Chitosan: An overview of biological activities, derivatives, properties, and current advancements in biomedical applications

The second and most often utilized natural polymer is chitosan (CS), a naturally existing amino polysaccharide that is produced by deacetylating chitin. Numerous applications have been the subject of in-depth investigation due to its non-hazardous, biologically compatible, and biodegradable qualities. Chitosan's characteristics, such as mucoadhesion, improved permeability, controlled release of drugs, in situ gelation process, and antibacterial activity, depend on its amino (-NH2) and hydroxyl groups (-OH). This study examines the latest findings in chitosan research, including its characteristics, derivatives, preliminary research, toxic effects, pharmaceutical kinetics and chitosan nanoparticles (CS-NPs) based for non-parenteral delivery of drugs. Chitosan and its derivatives have a wide range of physical and chemical properties that make them highly promising for use in the medicinal and pharmaceutical industries. The characteristics and biological activities of chitosan and its derivative-based nanomaterials for the delivery of drugs, therapeutic gene transfer, delivery of vaccine, engineering tissues, evaluations, and other applications in medicine are highlighted in detail in the current review. Together with the techniques for binding medications to nanoparticles, the application of the nanoparticles was also dictated by their physical properties that were classified and specified. The most recent research investigations on delivery of drugs chitosan nanoparticle-based medication delivery methods applied topically, through the skin, and through the eyes were considered.

Surface-engineered natural fibers: Emerging alternative substrates for chemical sensor applications: A review

Natural fiber has become one of the most widely used alternative materials for chemical sensor fabrication due to its advantages, such as biocompatibility, flexibility, and self-microfluidic properties. Enhanced natural fiber surface has been used as a substrate in colorimetric and electrochemical sensors. This review focuses on improving the natural fiber properties for preparation as a substrate for chemical sensors. Various methods for natural fiber extraction are discussed and compared. Bleaching and decolorization is important for preparation of colorimetric sensors, while carbonization and nanoparticle doping are favorable for increasing their electrical conductivity for electrochemical sensor fabrication. Also, example fabrications and applications of natural fiber-based chemical sensors for chemical and biomarker detection are discussed. The selectivity of the sensors can be introduced and improved by surface modification of natural fiber, such as enzyme immobilization and biorecognition element functionalization, illustrating the adaptability of natural fiber as a smart sensing device, e.g., wearable and portable sensors. Ultimately, the high performances of natural fiber-based chemical sensors indicate the potential uses of natural fiber as a renewable and eco-friendly substrate material in the field of chemical sensors and biosensors for clinical diagnosis and environmental monitoring.

Sulfonic acid functionalized cellulose-derived (nano)materials: Synthesis and application

The preparation/application of heterogeneous (nano)materials from natural resources has currently become increasingly fascinating for researchers. Cellulose is the most abundant renewable polysaccharide on earth. The unique physicochemical, structural, biological, and environmental properties of this natural biopolymer have led to its increased application in many fields. The more desirable features of cellulose-based (nano)materials such as biodegradability, renewability, biocompatibility, cost-effectiveness, simplicity of preparation, environmentally friendly nature, and widespread range of applications have converted them into promising compounds in medicine, catalysis, biofuel cells, and water/wastewater treatment processes. Functionalized cellulose-based (nano)materials containing sulfonic acid groups may prove to be one of the most promising sustainable bio(nano)materials of modern times in the field of cellulose science and (nano)technology owing to their intrinsic features, high crystallinity, high specific surface area, abundance, reactivity, and recyclability. In this review, the developments in the application of sulfonated cellulose-based (nano)materials containing sulfonic acid (-SO3H) groups in catalysis, water purification, biological/biomedical, environmental, and fuel cell applications have been reported. This review provides an overview of the methods used to chemically modify cellulose and/or cellulose derivatives in different forms, including nanocrystals, hydrogels, films/membranes, and (nano)composites/blends by introducing sulfonate groups on the cellulose backbone, focusing on diverse sulfonating agents utilized and substitution regioselectivity, and highlights their potential applications in different industries for the generation of alternative energies and products.

Cellulose Nanocrystals Show Anti-Adherent and Anti-Biofilm Properties against Oral Microorganisms

Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) are cellulose-derived nanomaterials that can be easily obtained, e.g., from vegetable waste produced by circular economies. They show promising antimicrobial activity and an absence of side effects and toxicity. This study investigated the ability of CNCs to reduce microbial adherence and biofilm formation using in vitro microbiological models reproducing the oral environment. Microbial adherence by microbial strains of oral interest, Streptococcus mutans and Candida albicans, was evaluated on the surfaces of salivary pellicle-coated enamel disks in the presence of different aqueous solutions of CNCs. The anti-biofilm activity of the same CNC solutions was tested against S. mutans and an oral microcosm model based on mixed plaque inoculum using a continuous-flow bioreactor. Results showed the excellent anti-adherent activity of the CNCs against the tested strains from the lowest concentration tested (0.032 wt. %, p < 0.001). Such activity was significantly higher against S. mutans than against C. albicans (p < 0.01), suggesting a selective anti-adherent activity against pathogenic strains. At the same time, there was a minimal, albeit significant, anti-biofilm activity (0.5 and 4 wt. % CNC solution for S. mutans and oral microcosm, respectively, p = 0.01). This makes CNCs particularly interesting as anticaries agents, encouraging their use in the oral field.

Unlocking the future of precision manufacturing: A comprehensive exploration of 3D printing with fiber-reinforced composites in aerospace, automotive, medical, and consumer industries

Rapid advancements in the field of 3D printing in the last several decades have made it possible to produce complex and unique parts with remarkable precision and accuracy. Investigating the use of 3D printing to create various high-performance materials is a relatively new field that is expanding exponentially worldwide. Automobile, biomedical, construction, aerospace, electronics, and metal and alloy industries are among the most prolific users of 3D printing technology. Modern 3D printing technologies, such as polymer matrices that use fiber-reinforced composites (FRCs) to enhance the mechanical qualities of printed components greatly, have been useful to several industries. High stiffness and tensile strength lightweight components are developed from these materials. Fiber-reinforced composites have a wide range of applications, such as military vehicles, fighter aircraft, underwater structures, shelters, and warfare equipment. Fabricating FRCs using fused deposition modeling (FDM) is also advantageous over other 3D printing methods due to its low cost and ease of operation. The impact of different continuous fiber and matrix polymer selections on FRC performance is covered in this review paper. We will also evaluate the important parameters influencing FRC characteristics and review the most recent equipment and methods for fabricating FRCs. Furthermore, the challenges associated with 3D printing fiber-reinforced composites are covered. The constraints of present technology have also been used to identify future research areas.

Nanotechnology-enhanced fiber-reinforced polymer composites: Recent advancements on processing techniques and applications

Incorporating nanoparticles can significantly improve the performance and functionality of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites. Different techniques exist for processing, testing, and implementing nanocomposites in various industries. Depending on these factors, these materials can be tailored to suit the specific applications of the automotive and aerospace industries, defence industries, biomedical and energy sectors etc. Nanotechnology offers several potential benefits for composites, including improved mechanical properties, surface modification, and sensing capabilities. This paper discusses the different types of nanoparticles, nanofibers, and nano-coating that can be used for reinforcement, surface modification, and property enhancement in FRP composites. It also examines the challenges associated with incorporating nanotechnology into composites and provides recommendations for potential opportunities in future work. This study is intended to offer a comprehensive understanding of the current research on using nanotechnology in FRP composites and its potential impact on the composites industry.

Exploring the Versatility of Aerogels: Broad Applications in Biomedical Engineering, Astronautics, Energy Storage, Biosensing, and Current Progress

Aerogels are unique and extremely porous substances with fascinating characteristics such as ultra-low density, extraordinary surface area, and excellent thermal insulation capabilities. Due to their exceptional features, aerogels have attracted significant interest from various fields, including energy, environment, aerospace, and biomedical engineering. This review paper presents an overview of the trailblazing research on aerogels, aiming at their preparation, characterization, and applications. Various methods of aerogel synthesis, such as sol-gel, supercritical drying, are discussed. Additionally, recent progress in the characterization of aerogel structures, including their morphology, porosity, and thermal properties, are extensively reviewed. Finally, aerogel's utilizations in numerous disciplines, for instance, energy storage, thermal insulation, catalysis, environmental remedy, and biomedical applications, are summarized. This review paper provides a comprehensive understanding of aerogels and their prospective uses in diverse fields, highlighting their unique properties for future research and development.
