Circularly Polarized Luminescence Chirality Inversion and Dual Anticounterfeiting Labels Based on Fluorescent Cholesteric Liquid Crystal Particles

The development of materials with circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) properties is a promising but challenging frontier in advanced materials science. Modulating the chiral properties of chiral polymers has also been a focus of research. Studies have been conducted to control the ground-state chirality of chiral polymers by adjusting the concentration of the chiral dopant. However, the chirality inversion of CPL of fluorescent liquid crystal particles by chiral dopant concentration has not been reported. Here, we report the preparation of fluorescent cholesteric liquid crystal (FCLC) particles that display polarizable structural color and CPL, demonstrating how varying the chiral dopant amount can reverse the CPL direction, leading to systems where the rotation directions of polarizable structural color and CPL either align or differ. This study confirmed the critical role played by the formation of the twist grain boundary phase in inducing the inversion of the ground-state chirality of FCLC particles and, subsequently, triggering the inversion process of CPL chirality. Furthermore, it leverages chiral structural color and fluorescence of FCLC particles to develop a sophisticated dual verification system. This system, utilizing both circularly polarized light and fluorescence, offers enhanced anticounterfeiting protection for high-value items.

Chirality Supramolecular Systems: Helical Assemblies, Structure Designs, and Functions

Chirality, as one of the most striking characteristics, exists at various scales in nature. Originating from the interactions of host and guest molecules, supramolecular chirality possesses huge potential in the design of functional materials. Here, an overview of the recent progress in structure designs and functions of chiral supramolecular materials is present. First, three design routes of the chiral supramolecular structure are summarized. Compared with the template-induced and chemical synthesis strategies that depend on accurate molecular identification, the twisted-assembly technique creates chiral materials through the ordered stacking of the nanowire or films. Next, chirality inversion and amplification are reviewed to explain the chirality transfer from the molecular level to the macroscopic scale, where the available external stimuli on the chirality inversion are also given. Lastly, owing to the optical activity and the characteristics of the layer-by-layer stacking structure, the supramolecular chirality materials display various excellent performances, including smart response, shape-memorization, superior mechanical performance, and applications in biomedical fields. To sum up, this work provides a systematic review of the helical assemblies, structure design, and applications of supramolecular chirality systems.

Uncovering supramolecular chirality codes for the design of tunable biomaterials

In neurodegenerative diseases, polymorphism and supramolecular assembly of β-sheet amyloids are implicated in many different etiologies and may adopt either a left- or right-handed supramolecular chirality. Yet, the underlying principles of how sequence regulates supramolecular chirality remains unknown. Here, we characterize the sequence specificity of the central core of amyloid-β 42 and design derivatives which enable chirality inversion at biologically relevant temperatures. We further find that C-terminal modifications can tune the energy barrier of a left-to-right chiral inversion. Leveraging this design principle, we demonstrate how temperature-triggered chiral inversion of peptides hosting therapeutic payloads modulates the dosed release of an anticancer drug. These results suggest a generalizable approach for fine-tuning supramolecular chirality that can be applied in developing treatments to regulate amyloid morphology in neurodegeneration as well as in other disease states.

A Kinetic Investigation of the Supramolecular Chiral Self-Assembling Process of Cationic Organometallic (2,2':6',2″-terpyridine)methylplatinum(II) Complexes with Poly(L-glutamic Acid)

The cationic platinum(II) organometallic complex [Pt(terpy)Me]+ (terpy = 2,2':6',2″-terpyridine) at mild acidic pH interacts with poly(L-glutamic acid) (L-PGA) in its α-helix conformation, affording chiral supramolecular adducts. Their kinetics of formation have been investigated in detail as a function of the concentrations of both reagents and changing pH, ionic strength, the length of the polymeric scaffold and temperature. After a very fast early stage, the kinetic traces have been analyzed as three consecutive steps, suggesting a mechanism based on the electrostatic fast formation of a not-organized aggregate that subsequently evolves through different rearrangements to form the eventual supramolecular adduct. A model for this species has been proposed based on (i) the attractive electrostatic interaction of the cationic platinum(II) complexes and the polyelectrolyte and (ii) the π-stacking interactions acting among the [Pt(terpy)Me]+ units.

Interaction of Aromatic Amino Acids with Metal Complexes of Tetrakis-(4-Sulfonatophenyl)Porphyrin

The interaction of a series of metal derivatives of 5, 10, 15, 20-tetrakis(4-sulfonato-phenyl)porphyrin (MTPPS4, M = Cu(II), Pt(II), Ni(II), Zn(II) and Co(II)), including the metal free porphyrin (TPPS4), with the aromatic amino acids L-tryptophan (L-Trp), L-and D-phenylalanine (L-and D-Phe) and L-histidine (L-His) have been investigated through UV/Vis spectroscopy. The amino acid L-serine (L-Ser) has been included as reference compound. The spectroscopic changes induced by adding the amino acids have been exploited to evaluate the extent of interaction between the molecular components in the supramolecular adducts. The binding constants have been estimated for most of the investigated systems, assuming a simple 1:1 equilibrium. The bathochromic shifts of the B-bands, the extent of hypochromicity and the binding constants have been analyzed through two chemical descriptors. All the data point to the important role played by the steric hindrance introduced by axial ligands coordinated to the metal ions and to the degree of hydrophobicity and size of the aromatic moiety in the amino acids.

Acceleration and deceleration of chirality inversion speeds in a dynamic helical metallocryptand by alkali metal ion binding

We report that the chirality inversion kinetics of a trinickel(II) cryptand can be controlled by guest recognition in the cryptand cavity. When the guest was absent, the nickel(II) cryptand underwent a dynamic interconversion between the P and M forms in solution, preferring the M form, with a half-life of t1/2 = 4.99 min. The P/M equilibrium is reversed to P-favored by binding with an alkali metal ion in the cryptand cavity. The timescale of this M→P inversion kinetics was both notably accelerated and decelerated by the guest binding (t1/2 = 0.182 min for K+ complex; 186 min for Cs+ complex); thus, the equilibration rate constants differed by up to 1000-fold depending on the guest metal ions. This acceleration/deceleration can be explained in terms of the virtual binding constants at the transition state of the P/M chirality inversion; K+ binding more stabilizes the transition state rather than the P and M forms to result in the acceleration.

Macroscopic handedness inversion of terbium coordination polymers achieved by doping homochiral ligand analogues

Inspired by natural biological systems, chiral or handedness inversion by altering external and internal conditions to influence intermolecular interactions is an attractive topic for regulating chiral self-assembled materials. For coordination polymers, the regulation of their helical handedness remains little reported compared to polymers and supramolecules. In this work, we choose the chiral ligands R-pempH2 (pempH2 = (1-phenylethylamino)methylphosphonic acid) and R-XpempH2 (X = F, Cl, Br) as the second ligand, which can introduce C-H⋯π and C-H⋯X interactions, doped into the reaction system of the Tb(R-cyampH)3·3H2O (cyampH2 = (1-cyclohexylethylamino)methylphosphonic acid) coordination polymer, which itself can form a right-handed superhelix by van der Waals forces, and a series of superhelices R-1H-x, R-2F-x, R-3Cl-x, and R-4Br-x with different doping ratios x were obtained, whose handedness is related to the second ligand and its doping ratio, indicating the decisive role of interchain interactions of different strengths in the helical handedness. This study could provide a new pathway for the design and self-assembly of chiral materials with controllable handedness and help the further understanding of the mechanism of self-assembly of coordination polymers forming macroscopic helical systems.

Assembly of Helical Nanostructures: Solvent-Induced Morphology Transition and Its Effect on Cell Adhesion

Being able to precisely manipulate both the morphology and chiroptical signals of supramolecular assemblies will help to better understand the natural biological self-assembly mechanism. Two simple l/d-phenylalanine-based derivatives (L/DPFM) have been designed, and their solvent-dependent morphology evolutions are illustrated. It was found that, as the content of H₂ O in aqueous ethanol solutions was increased, LPFM self-assembles first into right-handed nanofibers, then flat fibrous structures, and finally inversed left-handed nanofibers. Assemblies in ethanol and H₂ O exhibit opposite conformations and circular dichroism (CD) signals even though they are constructed from the same molecules. Thus, the morphology-dependent cell adhesion and proliferation behaviors are further characterized. Left-handed nanofibers are found to be more favorable for cell adhesion than right-handed nanostructures. Quantitative AFM analysis showed that the L929 cell adhesion force on left-handed LPFM fibers is much higher than that on structures with inversed handedness. Moreover, the value of cell Young's modulus is lower for left-handed nanofibrous films, which indicates better flexibility. The difference in cell-substrate interactions might lead to different effects on cell behavior.

Controlling the Multiple Chiroptical Inversion in Biphasic Liquid-Crystalline Polymers

While controlling the chirality and modulating the helicity is a challenging task, it attracts great research interest for gaining a better understanding of the origin of chirality in nature. Herein, structurally similar azobenzene (Azo) vinyl monomers were designed in which the alkyl chains comprised the chiral stereocenter with different achiral tail lengths. Combining the synchronous polymerization, supramolecular stacking and self-assembly, the multiple chiroptical inversion of the Azo-polymer supramolecular assemblies can be modulated by the tail length and DP of Azo blocks during in situ polymerization. The DP-, UV light-, temperature-, aging time-dependent chiroptical properties and liquid-crystalline (LC) characterization indicated that the amorphous-to-LC phase transition and biphasic LC interconversion allow the transcription of intra-chain π-π stacking, inter-chain H- and J-aggregation, thereby controlling the dynamic multiple reversal of supramolecular chirality.

Polymerization-Induced Helicity Inversion Driven by Stacking Modes and Self-Assembly Pathway Differentiation

Regulating the mutual stacking arrangements is of great interest for understanding the origin of chirality at different hierarchical levels in nature. Different from molecular level chirality, the control and manipulation of hierarchical chirality in polymer systems is limited to the use of external factors as the energetically demanding switching stimulus. Herein, the first self-assembly strategy of polymerization-induced helicity inversion (PIHI), in which the controlled packing and dynamic stereomutation of azobenzene (Azo) building blocks are realized by in situ polymerization without any external stimulus, is reported. A multiple helicity inversion and intriguing helix-helix transition of polymeric supramolecular nanofibers occurs during polymerization, which is collectively confirmed to be mediated by the transition between functionality-oriented π-π stacking, H-, and J-aggregation. The studies further reveal that helicity inversion proceeds through a delicate interplay of the thermodynamically and kinetically controlled, pathway-dependent interconversion process, which should provide new insight into the origin and handedness control of helical nanostructures with desired chirality.

Rational Fabrication of Multiple Dimensional Assemblies from Tryptophan-Based Racemate

Fabricating structural complex assemblies from simple amino acid-based derivatives is attracting great research interests due to their easy accessibility and preparation. However, the morphological regulation of racemates (an equimolar mixture of enantiomers) were largely overlooked. In this work, through rational modulation of kinetic and thermodynamic parameters, we achieved multiple dimensional architectures employing tryptophan-based racemate (RPWM). Upon assembling, 1D bundled nanofibers, 2D lamellar nanostructure and 3D urchin-like microflowers could be obtained depending on the solvents used. The corresponding morphology evolutions were successfully illustrated by changing the enantiomeric excess (ee) value. Moreover, for RPWM, uniform 0D nanospheres were formed in H 2 O under 4 ℃, which could spontaneously convert into lamella under ambient temperature. Taking advantages of its temperature-responsive phase change behavior, RPWM assemblies exhibited excellent removal efficiency for organic dye RhB, and could be reused for several consecutive cycles without significant changes in its removal performance. Taken together, it's rational to envision that the engineering of racemates assembly pathways can greatly increase the robustness in a wide variety of supramolecular materials and further lead to their blooming versatile applications.

Competition between chiral solvents and chiral monomers in the helical bias of supramolecular polymers

Solute-solvent interactions are key for the assembly and proper functioning of biomacromolecules and play important roles in many fields of organic and polymer chemistry. Despite numerous reports describing the effects of (chiral) solvents on helical conformations of (supramolecular) polymers, the combination of chiral solvents and chiral monomers is unexplored. Here we report diastereomeric differences in the supramolecular polymerization of enantiomers of chiral triphenylene-2,6,10-tricarboxamides in chiral chlorinated solvents. Competition between the preferences induced by the stereocentres of the assembled monomers and those present in the solvent molecules results in unforeseen temperature-dependent solvation effects. By combining experiments and mathematical modelling, we show that the observed differences between enantiomers originate from the combined additive entropic effects of stereocentres present in the monomer and in the solvent. Remarkably, copolymerizations show that the chiral solvent can bias the copolymer helicity and thereby overrule the helical preference of the monomers. Our results highlight the importance of cumulative solvation effects in supramolecular polymerizations.

LRP1-mediated pH-sensitive polymersomes facilitate combination therapy of glioblastoma in vitro and in vivo

BACKGROUND

Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most invasive primary intracranial tumor, and its effective treatment is one of the most daunting challenges in oncology. The blood-brain barrier (BBB) is the main obstacle that prevents the delivery of potentially active therapeutic compounds. In this study, a new type of pH-sensitive polymersomes has been designed for glioblastoma therapy to achieve a combination of radiotherapy and chemotherapy for U87-MG human glioblastoma xenografts in nude mice and significantly increased survival time.

RESULTS

The Au-DOX@PO-ANG has a good ability to cross the blood-brain barrier and target tumors. This delivery system has pH-sensitivity and the ability to respond to the tumor microenvironment. Gold nanoparticles and doxorubicin are designed as a complex drug. This type of complex drug improve the radiotherapy (RT) effect of glioblastoma. The mice treated with Au-DOX@PO-ANG NPs have a significant reduction in tumor volume.

CONCLUSION

In summary, a new pH-sensitive drug delivery system was fabricated for the treatment of glioblastoma. The new BBB-traversing drug delivery system potentially represents a novel approach to improve the effects of the treatment of intracranial tumors and provides hope for glioblastoma treatment.

Redox-Driven In Situ Helix Reversal of Graphene-Based Hydrogels

Controlling the handedness of dynamic helical nanostructures of supramolecular assemblies by external stimuli is of great fundamental significance with appealing morphology-dependent applications. Significantly, access to in situ chirality transformation of dynamic multistimuli-responsive systems can provide channels for real-time monitoring of the transfer processes in biological systems. However, efforts to achieve helix inversion in an all-gel-state and to comprehend the phenomena at a molecular scale are scarce. Herein, we introduce an example of supramolecular hydrogel in which graphene oxide (GO) incorporation leads to opposite helicity of the l-phenylalanine derivative (LPFEG) upon UV irradiation. The gelator modulates different degrees of packing that are responsible for the initial construction of right-handed nanofibers in GO surfaces and for the change in helix to preferred left-handedness in RGO surfaces caused by GO reduction. Specifically, LPFEG shows a mixture of right- and left-handed nanofibers with an appropriate exposure to UV light. A thermal-reversible transformation of chirality is also discovered in the supramolecular assemblies, allowing a dynamic and invertible flip of helicity upon heating and cooling. The morphology transformation makes the hybrid an ideal candidate for application in a precisely controlled drug delivery process. It can unexpectedly serve as a photosensitizer and a carrier for enantioselective absorption of specific chiral drugs enantiomer (l-dopa and S-naproxen sodium) and also exhibit on-demand drug release due to the helix reversal induced by light irradiation. Our results illustrate how the surface reactivity can direct the helical organization of adsorbed fibers, which in turn provide control over enantioselective absorption of chiral drug enantiomers, further giving rise to on-demand drug release due to handedness inversion upon UV irradiation.

Preparation of amylose-poly(methyl methacrylate) inclusion complex as a smart nanocarrier with switchable surface hydrophilicity

Amylose, as a linear biopolymer, tends to form helical inclusion complexes with suitable guest species. This is of great importance for a variety of applications, especially in the pharmaceutical and food industry. In this study, we propose an approach for the preparation of a novel inclusion complex with switchable surface hydrophilicity. For this purpose, amylose was first conjugated to ethylene diamine hydrophilic residues. Then, the short chains of the hydrophobic poly(methyl methacrylate, PMMA) were grafted onto the cavity of amylose through atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). According to CD spectroscopy results, the amylose-PMMA inclusion complexes displayed solvent-directed helical chirality inversion using either DMSO or water as a solvent. Fluorescence imaging, AFM and DLS techniques revealed the solvent-dependent surface hydrophilicity of the amylose-PMMA inclusion complex. Interestingly, its morphological studies displayed a central cavity, which makes it suitable for carrying cargoes in drug delivery applications. Obtaining the amylose-polymer inclusion complexes with tailorable hydrophilicity of both the exterior surface and the interior cavity can be of paramount importance for a wide variety of bio-applications.

Multi-component peptide hydrogels - a systematic study incorporating biomolecules for the exploration of diverse, tuneable biomaterials

Peptide-based supramolecular gels can be designed to be functional "smart" materials that have applications in drug delivery, tissue engineering, and supramolecular chemistry. Although many multi-component gel systems have been designed and reported, many of these applications still rely solely on single-component gel systems which limits the functionalities of the materials. Multi-component self-assembly leads to the formation of highly ordered and complex architectures while offering the possibility to generate hydrogels with interesting properties including functional complexity and diverse morphologies. Being able to incorporate various classes of biomolecules can allow for tailoring the materials' functionalities to specific application needs. Here, a novel peptide amphiphile, myristyl-Phe-Phe (C14-FF), was synthesized and explored for hydrogel formation. The hydrogel possesses a nanofiber matrix morphology, composed of β-sheet aggregates, a record-low gelation concentration for this class of compounds, and a unique solvent-dependent helical switch. The C14-FF hydrogel was then explored with various classes of biomolecules (carbohydrates, vitamins, proteins, building blocks of HA) to generate a multi-component library of gels that have potential to represent the complex natural extracellular matrix. Selected multi-component gels exhibit an excellent compatibility with mesenchymal stem cells showing high cell viability percentages, which holds great promise for applications in regenerative therapy.

Helical polymers for biological and medical applications

Helices are the most prevalent secondary structure in biomolecules and play vital roles in their activity. Chemists have been fascinated with mimicking this molecular conformation with synthetic materials. Research has now been devoted to the synthesis and characterization of helical materials, and to understand the design principles behind this molecular architecture. In parallel, work has been done to develop synthetic polymers for biological and medical applications. We now have access to materials with controlled size, molecular conformation, multivalency or functionality. As a result, synthetic polymers are being investigated in areas such as drug and gene delivery, tissue engineering, imaging and sensing, or as polymer therapeutics. Here, we provide a critical view of where these two fields, helical polymers and polymers for biological and medical applications, overlap. We have selected relevant polymer families and examples to illustrate the range of applications that can be targeted and the impact of the helical conformation on the performance. For each family of polymers, we briefly describe how they can be prepared, what helical conformations are observed and what parameters control helicity. We close this Review with an outlook of the challenges ahead, including the characterization of helicity through the process and the identification of biocompatibility.

Binary Supramolecular Chirality "1/0" Switched by Hierarchical Photoisomerization of a Flower-Like Compound with a Binaphthol Core and Alkyl-Functionalized Azobenzene Side Chains

Chiral supramolecular assemblies are abundant in nature, but controlling the chirality of artificial systems still remains a challenge. In this work, we developed a system where supramolecular chirality can be controlled between chiral and achiral states, namely a chiral "1/0" switch using a flower-like azobenzene compound with a binaphthol core. Upon photoisomerization by ultraviolet irradiation, the terminal alkyl tails envelop the chiral "centre" with a reduction in the dihedral angle of the binaphthol moiety from 76.1° to 61.4°, like "closing petals". In the doped liquid crystal E7 matrix, this hierarchical conformational transition prevents the transfer of chirality to the host liquid crystal, resulting in a degradation from cholesteric phase (HTP value: 13.84 μm^-1 ) to an achiral nematic phase.

Effect of Chirality on Cell Spreading and Differentiation: From Chiral Molecules to Chiral Self-Assembly

The influence of chirality on cell behavior is closely related with relevant biological events; however, many recent studies only focus on the apparent chiral influence of supramolecular nanofibers and ignore the respective effects of molecular chirality and supramolecular chirality in biological processes. Herein, the inherent molecular and supramolecular chiral effects on cell spreading and differentiation are studied. Left-handed nanofibers (referring to supramolecular chirality) assembled from l-amino acid derivatives can enhance cell spreading and proliferation compared to flat l-surfaces (referring to molecular chirality). However, compared to the d-surfaces (referring to molecular chirality), right-handed nanofibers (referring to supramolecular chirality) derived from d-amino acid suppress cell spreading and proliferation, overturning the conventional view that a fibrous morphology generally enhances cell adhesion. The results directly suggest that the amplification of chirality from chiral molecules to chiral assemblies significantly enhances the effect on regulated cell behavior by supramolecular helical handedness. Moreover, cell differentiation is found to be chirality dependent. It suggests that both the l-amino acid derivatives and the left-handed fibers facilitate osteogenic differentiation. This study provides useful insight into understanding the origin of chiral expression from the molecular to the macroscopic level in nature.

pH-Controlled Chiral Packing and Self-Assembly of a Coumarin Tetrapeptide

A coumarin-tetrapeptide conjugate, EFEK(DAC)-NH₂ (1), is reported to undergo a pH-dependent interconversion between nanotubes and nanoribbons. An examination of zeta potential measurements, circular dichroism (CD) spectra, and microscopy imaging (transmission electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy) identified three different self-assembly regimes based on pH: (1) pH 2-5, positively charged, left-handed helical nanotubes; (2) pH 6-8, negatively charged, right-handed helical nanoribbons; and (3) pH ≥ 9.0, a monomeric/disassembled peptide. The nanotubes exhibited uniform diameters of 41 ± 5 nm and wall thicknesses of 4.8 ± 0.8 nm, whereas the nanoribbons existed as either flat or twisted sheets ranging in width from 11 to 60 nm with heights of 8 ± 1 nm. The UV-vis and CD spectra of the most common antiparallel, β-sheet conformation of 1-dimer were simulated at the B3LYP/def2svpd level of theory in implicit water. These studies indicated that the transition from nanotubes to nanoribbons was coupled to an M → P helical inversion of the coumarin packing orientation, respectively, within the nanostructures. The assembly process was driven by β-sheet aggregation and π-π interactions, leading to the formation of nanoribbons, which progressively wound into helical ribbons and laterally grew into smooth nanotubes as the pH decreased.

A Temperature-Driven, Reversible, Helical-Handedness Inversion in Peptaibol Analogues Tuned by the C-Terminal Capping Moiety

Trichogin is a natural peptide endowed with antimicrobial and antitumor activity. A member of the peptaibol family, trichogin possesses a C-terminal amino alcohol. In the past, this moiety was substituted for a methyl ester for synthetic purposes and it was observed that this apparently slight modification caused significant changes in the peptide bioactivity. With the aim of understanding the reasons behind such observations, a detailed spectroscopic study on a number of trichogin analogues has been performed. Herein, data obtained from synchrotron radiation circular dichroism, NMR spectroscopy, and fluorescence spectroscopy in organic solvents at cryogenic temperatures are compared with those independently acquired by means of EPR spectroscopy at 80 K. It is unambiguously revealed that the presence of a reversible, temperature-driven, screw-sense interconversion from a right- to left-handed helix is determined by the C-terminal capping moiety. Data demonstrate, for the first time, the key role of a C-terminal methyl ester in promoting peptide screw-sense inversion.

Real-Time Monitoring of Hierarchical Self-Assembly and Induction of Circularly Polarized Luminescence from Achiral Luminogens

Constructing artificial helical structures through hierarchical self-assembly and exploring the underlying mechanism are important, and they help gain insight from the structures, processes, and functions from the biological helices and facilitate the development of material science and nanotechnology. Herein, the two enantiomers of chiral Au(I) complexes ( S)-1 and ( R)-1 were synthesized, and they exhibited impressive spontaneous hierarchical self-assembly transitions from vesicles to helical fibers. An impressive chirality inversion and amplification was accompanied by the assembly transition, as elucidated by the results of in situ and time-dependent circular dichroism spectroscopy and scanning electron microscope imaging. The two enantiomers could serve as ideal chiral templates to co-assemble with other achiral luminogens to efficiently induce the resulting co-assembly systems to show circularly polarized luminescence (CPL). Our work has provided a simple but efficient way to explore the sophisticated self-assembly process and presented a facile and effective strategy to fabricate architectures with CPL properties.

Tuning the Handedness: Role of Chiral Component in Peptide-Appended Bolaamphiphile-Based Coassembled Hydrogels

Chirality is the intrinsic property of a molecule that can be tuned by the change in chirality of a molecule or by the addition of a chiral component as an external stimulus. An l-leucine-based dipeptide-appended succinic acid-based bolaamphiphile coassembled with d-tartaric acid to form supramolecular right-handed nanostructured hydrogel, whereas l-tartaric acid coassembled to form supramolecular left-handed nanostructured hydrogel. Scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy experiments revealed the right- and left-handed helical nanofibers that are responsible for the formation of supramolecular nanostructured hydrogels. The synergistic chiral effect of l-leucine in peptide bolaamphiphile and d/l-tartaric acid plays a significant role in bicomponent gelation with helical nanofibers. The first two amino acids attached to both sides of succinic acid moiety act as a tuning button for supramolecular chirality of amino acids/peptides attached with succinic acid-based bolaamphiphiles. The second amino acid plays the role of modulating supramolecular chirality if the first two amino acids act neutrally to the chirality of bolaamphiphiles, which was confirmed by circular dichroism spectroscopy.

Solvation of 2-(hydroxymethyl)-2,5,7,8-tetramethyl-chroman-6-ol revealed by circular dichroism: a case of chromane helicity rule breaking

The primary goal of this work is to clarify why 2-(hydroxymethyl)-2,5,7,8-tetramethyl-chroman-6-ol {(S)-TMChM} deviates from the chromane helicity rule under solvent change. The rule, applicable to determining the absolute configuration of molecules containing the chromane chromophore, binds the sign of the 1Lb Cotton effect (CE) with the helicity of the dihydropyran ring. In case of TMChM, however, this CE exhibits extreme solvent dependence: it is negative in non-coordinating solvents and positive in coordinating ones, irrespective of the helicity of the heterocyclic ring. TD-DFT calculations using PCM and hybrid solvation models were performed to explain origin of this phenomenon. It turned out that the 1Lb CE sign directly depends on the position of the phenolic OH group at carbon atom C6 (OHC6). In the absence of interactions with solvents (as in CCl4 or nC6H14) or when a solvent plays proton donor role (as in CHCl3), the OHC6 lies in the phenyl plane and the 1Lb CE sign follows the P/M helicity rule. In contrast, in proton acceptor solvents, like DMSO, CH3OH or CH3CN, the OHC6 group is deflected from the phenyl plane, and the 1Lb CE sign of individual (S)-TMChM conformers depends on the sector in which the OHC6 is located. Thus, in solution, the 1Lb CE sign is an average over different orientations of the OHC6 group and can be positive (as in DMSO and CH3OH) or negative (as in CH3CN) which means that it does not follow the chromane helicity rule. The impact of OHC6 on the 1Lb CE sign and thus the conclusions for the stereochemistry of chromans are demonstrated here for the first time. Additionally, a comparison of experimental and simulated ECD spectra, supported by VCD data, allowed to determine the geometry of intermolecular clusters formed in different solvents.

Induced chirality and reversal of phosphomolybdate cluster via modulating its interaction with cyclodextrins

Direct-induced chirality of a metal–oxide cluster by cyclodextrins was realized and the reversals of the induced Cotton signals were modulated by introducing a competitive guest and/or substituting by different cyclodextrins.
