Effect of Microwave Treatment of Graphite on the Electrical Conductivity and Electrochemical Properties of Polyaniline/Graphene Oxide Composites

Efficiency of zero-dimensional and two-dimensional graphene architectural nanocomposites for organic transformations in the contemporary environment: a review

Graphene derivatives-based nanocatalyst finds increasing utilisation in the catalysis field for organic transformations. Researchers have been working on the development of graphene oxide, reduced graphene oxide, and graphene quantum dots with metal or metal oxide nanocomposites over the last few years. These materials exhibit excellent electrical, catalytic, optical, thermal, and magnetic properties. In particular, GO/rGO/GQDs composites assisted by metal or metal oxides have attracted broad attention for their possible applications in organic compound synthesis, drug delivery, sensors, devices, and the related areas of the environment. In this review, we have summarised GO/rGO/GQDs-metal or metal oxide composites using catalyst for organic conversions and synthesis of organic compounds in accordance with the discussion on the key problems and prospects for future study. Furthermore, there is a significant function for the catalytic efficiency of composites assisted by metal or metal oxide nanocatalyst which is categorised by graphene derivatives bases.

Performance evaluation of poly(aniline-co-pyrrole) wrapped titanium dioxide nanocomposite as an air-cathode catalyst material for microbial fuel cell

A simple, inexpensive in situ oxidative polymerization of aniline and pyrrole using ammonium persulfate (APS) as oxidant and hydrochloric acid (HCl) as dopant has been used to synthesize a hybrid (PAni-Co-PPy)@TiO₂ nanocomposite with titanium oxide (TiO₂) nanoparticles (NPs) wrapped into (PAni-Co-PPy) copolymer. The synthesized nanocomposite has been shown with higher oxygen reduction reactions (ORR) as an excellent cathode material for higher performance in the complex of (PAni-Co-PPy)⁺/TiO₂(O^-). The charge transport phenomenon between TiO₂ and (PAni-Co-PPy)⁺ were found adequate with subsequent delocalization of electron/s at PAni and PPy. The self-doping nature of TiO₂ (O^-) played a vital role in oxygen adsorption and desorption process. With higher electrical conductivity and surface area, these were tested in microbial fuel cells (MFCs) for ORRs at cathode. This yielded a relatively higher current and power density output as compared to PAni@TiO₂, PPy@TiO₂, and commercially available Pt/C cathode catalysts in MFC system. In overall, the prepared (PAni-Co-PPy)@TiO₂ nano-hybrid cathode delivered ~2.03 fold higher power density as compared to Pt/C catalyst, i.e. ~987.36 ± 49 mW/m² against ~481.02 ± 24 mW/m². The properties of electro-catalysts established an improved synergetic effect between TiO₂ NPs and (PAni-Co-PPy). In effect, the enhanced surface area and electrochemical properties of the prepared (PAni-Co-PPy)@TiO₂ nano-hybrid system is depicted here as an effective cathode catalyst in MFCs for improved performance.

Feeling the power: robust supercapacitors from nanostructured conductive polymers fostered with Mn2+ and carbon dots

Polyaniline (PANI) is considered one of the most preferred electrically conductive polymers (CPs), which is widely studied as an electrode material in designing next-generation energy storage devices due to their chemical stability, fast redox reactions between the polymer and the electrolytes, high electrical conductivity, excellent electrochemical performance, and low cost. However, the inferior stability of PANI limits its application. In this work, the benefit of carbon dots (CDots) as light-weight and spherical carbon-based electrodes and fillers that allow the maintenance of the nanostructure of PANI while easing the ionic transport was studied together with the effect of manganese(ii) (Mn²⁺) doping on the overall capacitive properties of PANI. The integration of N-doped spherical, nanosized carbon dots (N-CDots) in the copolymerization of nanostructured PANI in the presence of varying concentrations of Mn²⁺ as a dopant synergistically improved the overall conductivity and specific surface area of the PANI-based electrode and showed surface double layer ion exchange. Pseudocapacitance mechanisms were observed when the dopant concentration was kept at a molar percentage of Mn²⁺ to aniline of 1, which displayed exceptionally high specific capacitances of up to 595 F g^-1. The asymmetric supercapacitor devices made with N-CDot and nanostructured hybrid electrodes could reveal the great potential in the development of cheap yet efficient battery-sized supercapacitor devices. In addition to extensive electrochemical performance, advanced EPR spectroscopy revealed detailed information regarding the defect structures of electrode materials in terms of understanding the conduction behavior of defect centers.

Intercalation Polymerization Approach for Preparing Graphene/Polymer Composites

The rapid development of society has promoted increasing demand for various polymer materials. A large variety of efforts have been applied in order for graphene strengthened polymer composites to satisfy different requirements. Graphene/polymer composites synthesized by traditional strategies display some striking defects, like weak interfacial interaction and agglomeration of graphene, leading to poor improvement in performance. Furthermore, the creation of pre-prepared graphene while being necessary always involves troublesome processes. Among the various preparation strategies, an appealing approach relies on intercalation and polymerization in the interlayer of graphite and has attracted researchers' attention due to its reliable, fast and simple synthesis. In this review, we introduce an intercalation polymerization strategy to graphene/polymer composites by the intercalation of molecules/ions into graphite interlayers, as well as subsequent polymerization. The key point for regulating intercalation polymerization is tuning the structure of graphite and intercalants for better interaction. Potential applications of the resulting graphene/polymer composites, including electrical conductivity, electromagnetic absorption, mechanical properties and thermal conductivity, are also reviewed. Furthermore, the shortcomings, challenges and prospects of intercalation polymerization are discussed, which will be helpful to researchers working in related fields.

Thermomechanical Behavior of Polymer Composites Based on Edge-Selectively Functionalized Graphene Nanosheets

In this study, we demonstrate an effective approach based on a simple processing method to improve the thermomechanical properties of graphene polymer composites (GPCs). Edge-selectively functionalized graphene (EFG) was successfully obtained through simple ball milling of natural graphite in the presence of dry ice, which acted as the source of carboxyl functional groups that were attached to the peripheral basal plane of graphene. The resultant EFG is highly dispersible in various organic solvents and contributes to improving their physical properties because of its unique characteristics. Pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA) and 4,4'-oxydianiline (ODA) were used as monomers for constructing the polyimide (PI) backbone, after which PI/EFG composites were prepared by in situ polymerization. A stepwise thermal imidization method was used to prepare the PI films for comparison purposes. The PI/EFG composite films were found to exhibit reinforced thermal and thermo-mechanical properties compared to neat PI owing to the interaction between the EFG and PI matrix.

Facile Synthesis of Polyaniline Nanotubes with Square Capillary Using Urea as Template

Polyaniline nanotubes were successfully synthesized by a facile in situ chemical oxidative polymerization method using urea as soft template. When the urea/aniline molar ratio is 3:1, the as-prepared nanotubular polyaniline (PANI-3) shows regular and uniform square capillaries, which provides a high electrode/electrolyte contact, easy ion diffusion and enhanced electroactive regions during the electrochemical process, leading to weak internal resistance and improved electrochemical performance. The PANI-3 sample exhibits a high specific capacitance of 405 F/g at current density of 0.2 A/g, and PANI only has a specific capacitance of 263 F/g. At current density of 1 A/g, the capacitance of PANI-3 is still 263 F/g (64.9% of the capacitance at 0.2 A/g). Such a PANI-3 nanotube, with regular and uniform capillary, is a promising electrode material for high-performance supercapacitors.
