Effects of Inoculum Type and Aeration Flowrate on the Performance of Aerobic Granular SBRs

Impact analysis of hydraulic residence time and dissolved oxygen on performance efficiency and microbial community in N, N-dimethylformamide wastewater treated by an AnSBR-ASBR

Suitable operating parameters are one of the key factors to efficient and stable biological wastewater treatment of N, N-dimethylformamide (DMF) wastewater. In this study, an improved AnSBR-ASBR reactor (anaerobic sequencing batch reactor, AnSBR, and aerobic SBR, ASBR, run in series) was used to investigated the effects of operating conditions such as hydraulic residence time (HRT), AnSBR stirring speed and ASBR dissolved oxygen (DO) for DMF wastewater treatment. When HRT decreased from 24 h to 12 h, the average removal rates of COD by the AnSBR were 34.59% and 39.54%, respectively. Meanwhile, the removal rate of NH4+-N by ASBR decreased from 88.38% to 62.81%. The DMF removal rate reached the best at 18 h and the expression of dehydrogenase was the highest in the AnSBR. The abundance of Megasphaera, the dominant sugar-degrading bacteria in the AnSBR, continued to decline due to the decrease of HRT. The relative abundance of Methanobacterium gradually increased to 80.2% with the decrease of HRT and that hydrotrophic methanogenesis dominated the methanogenic process. The HRT decrease promoted butyrate and pyruvate metabolism in anaerobic sludge, but the proportion of glycolysis and methane metabolism decreased. The AnSBR-ASBR reactor had the best operation performance when HRT was 18 h, AnSBR speed was 220 r/min, and ASBR DO content was 3-4 mg/L. This study provided an effective reference for the reasonable selection of operating parameters in the treatment of DMF-containing wastewater by the AnSBR-ASBR.

Advancements of sequencing batch reactor for industrial wastewater treatment: Major focus on modifications, critical operational parameters, and future perspectives

Industrial wastewater discharge has increased manifolds over the last few decades. Efficient industrial wastewater treatment is mandatory to meet stringent discharge regulations. Biological treatment systems, such as the sequencing batch reactor (SBR) are generally employed for domestic wastewater treatment. However, low infrastructure and energy requirements, as well as low footprint, make SBR a prominent technique to treat industrial wastewater. In the present review, the feasibility of SBR to treat wastewater generated from industries, such as textile, pulp and paper, pharmaceutical, tannery, etc., has been discussed. The factors affecting the treatment efficacy of the SBR in terms of organics and nutrient removal have also been investigated. It has been observed that the SBR system is effective for industrial wastewater treatment as it is easy to operate, resistant to shock loads, and can retain high biomass concentrations. The modifications to the conventional SBR, such as sludge granulation, the addition of bio-film carriers, and the incorporation of adsorbents, salt-tolerant microbes, and coagulants have been discussed. Further, various novel combinations of SBR with the other advanced treatment technologies, such as Fenton, membrane-based process, and electrochemical process have shown enhanced removal of various conventional and recalcitrant pollutants. The current review also accentuates the sustainability aspects of SBR technology to treat industrial wastewater which may be beneficial for researchers and engineers working in this field.

Fast granulation of halophilic activated sludge treating low-strength organic saline wastewater via addition of divalent cations

Granulation of halophilic activated sludge is an important solution to solve the problem of solid-liquid separation in biological treatment of saline wastewater. This study demonstrated that by adding divalent cations into the saline influent with low organic load, halophilic granular sludge with an average diameter of 910 ± 10 μm can be cultivated. The close correlation between divalent cations and particle size indicated that Ca²⁺ played a major role in the granulation process. Ca²⁺ was accumulated in halophilic granular sludge, which provided an inorganic carrier for microbial aggregation and leaded to the dominance of halophilic bacteria of the family Flavobacteriaceae. The halophilic bacteria secreted a large amount of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), which contained 70.0 ± 0.02% protein. By enhancing the EPS network of protein and Ca²⁺, halophilic granular sludge was formed. The addition of Mg²⁺ enhanced the network of Mg²⁺ and loosely bound EPS, which could be destroyed due to Na⁺ substitution. This study provides an effective granulation method for halophilic activated sludge.

Performance prediction of an aerobic granular SBR using modular multilayer artificial neural networks

Aerobic granulation is a complex process that, while proven to be more effective than conventional treatment methods, has been a challenge to control and maintain stable operation. This work presents a static data-driven model to predict the key performance indicators of the aerobic granulation process. The first sub-model receives influent characteristics and granular sludge properties. These predicted parameters then become the input for the second sub-model, predicting the effluent characteristics. The model was developed with a dataset of 2600 observations and evaluated with an unseen dataset of 286 observations. The prediction R² and RMSE were >99% and <5% respectively for all predicted parameters. The results of this paper show the effectiveness of data-driven models for simulating the complex aerobic granulation process, providing a great tool to help in predicting the behaviour, and anticipating failures in aerobic granular reactors.
