Structure Manipulation of Carbon Aerogels by Managing Solution Concentration of Precursor and Its Application for CO2 Capture

Exploring the Conformational Equilibrium of Mefenamic Acid Released from Silica Aerogels via NMR Analysis

This study examines the influence of mefenamic acid on the physical and chemical properties of silica aerogels, as well as its effect on the sorption characteristics of the composite material. Solid state magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (MAS NMR) and high-pressure ¹³C NMR kinetic studies were conducted to identify the presence of mefenamic acid and measure the kinetic rates of CO₂ sorption. Additionally, a high-pressure T₁-T₂ relaxation-relaxation correlation spectroscopy (RRCOSY) study was conducted to estimate the relative amount of mefenamic acid in the aerogel's pores, and a high-pressure nuclear Overhauser effect spectoscopy (NOESY) study was conducted to investigate the conformational preference of mefenamic acid released from the aerogel. The results indicate that mefenamic acid is affected by the chemical environment of the aerogel, altering the ratio of mefenamic acid conformers from 75% to 25% in its absence to 22% to 78% in the presence of aerogel.

Stabilization of Perovskite Solar Cells: Recent Developments and Future Perspectives

Exceptional power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 25.7% in perovskite solar cells (PSCs) has been achieved, which is comparable with their traditional rivals (Si-based solar cells). However, commercialization-worthy efficiency and long-term stability remain a challenge. In this regard, there are increasing studies focusing on the interface engineering in PSC devices to overcome their poor technical readiness. Herein, the roles of electrode materials and interfaces in PSCs are discussed in terms of their PCEs and perovskite stability. All the current knowledge on the factors responsible for the rapid intrinsic and external degradation of PSCs is presented. Then, the roles of carbonaceous materials as substitutes for noble metals are focused on, along with the recent research progress in carbon-based PSCs. Furthermore, a sub-category of PSCs, that is, flexible PSCs, is considered as a type of exceptional power source due to their high power-to-weight ratios and figures of merit for next-generation wearable electronics. Last, the future perspectives and directions for research in PSCs are discussed, with an emphasis on their commercialization.

Processing of aerogels and their applications toward CO2 adsorption and electrochemical reduction: a review

Aerogels are a unique class of nanoporous ultralight materials exhibiting wide range of textural characteristic properties and tunable porosities. Due to their remarkable features such as low density, high surface area, low refractive index, small thermal conductivity, low dielectric constant and low sound velocity, they exhibit a wide range of applications in different areas such as electronics, thermal and acoustic insulation, chemistry, biomedicine and optics. The special advantages of these materials are that they can be produced in different forms such as monoliths/granular, bead/microspheres, thin films or sheets and as blankets. Aerogels are found to be potential materials for the removal of CO₂ through adsorption or electrochemical reduction. There is a plethora of research on different kinds of aerogels used for CO₂ adsorption process. Research has been going on toward the development of aerogel-based electrocatalyst, which can be used for valorization of CO₂ through electrochemical reduction methods. Although most of the review papers have covered applications of aerogels in CO₂ capture, very few discuss the processing of aerogels, more so on their applications in CO₂ valorization. In this review, we have collated literature of different forms of aerogels currently available and the steps involved in their fabrication process. In addition, we have covered applications of aerogels in CO₂ capture. Furthermore, we focussed on the basic principles involved in the development of an aerogel electrocatalyst as well as recent developments of aerogels in electrochemical CO₂ reduction.

Cost-Effective Monolithic Hierarchical Carbon Cryogels with Nitrogen Doping and High-Performance Mechanical Properties for CO2 Capture

Cost-effective nitrogen-doped monolithic hierarchical carbon cryogels with excellent mechanical properties and carbon dioxide (CO₂) adsorption performance were prepared from phenol, melamine, and formaldehyde (PMF) by the sol-gel, freeze-drying, and then, pyrolysis processes under an inert atmosphere. The morphology, mechanical properties, pore structure, and chemical characteristics of these cryogels were investigated. The results showed that the dilution ratio played a crucial role in the preparation of nitrogen-doped PMF carbon cryogels with controlled structures. The prepared carbon cryogels were a kind of monolithic materials composed of a hierarchical pore structure and had high compression properties (0.67 and 9.4 MPa for strength and modulus), porosity (97.6%), surface area (1406 m²/g), and heteroatom nitrogen content (0.98-2.09%). CO₂ adsorption capacities up to 5.75 mmol/g at 0 °C and 4.50 mmol/g at 25 °C under 1 bar were obtained, which is at a high level among N-doped carbon materials and far better than resorcinol-based carbon gels reported. These superior CO₂ adsorption capacities, high isosteric adsorption heat (Q_st), and good CO₂/N₂ adsorption selectivity were ascribed to the synergistic effect of high surface area, appropriate pore size, and also heteroatom doping.
