Preparation and characterization of a self-suspending ultra-low density proppant

A self-suspending ultra-low density proppant (UDP) was developed based on the polymerization of the unsaturated carbon double bond. Its performance was characterized by FT-IR and SEM, and the sphericity and roundness, diameter distribution, density, mechanical properties, the conductivity of the propped fracture, and mass loss of different fluids were measured. The test results indicated that the UDP no longer contained the unsaturated carbon double bond and the polymerization took place in the raw material. The fracture surface of UDP is compact and it is not easy to produce debris after compression failure. The sphericity and roundness of UDP were above 0.9, and the high sphericity and roundness provided high conductivity. The stirring speed has a great influence on the diameter of UDP, and the UDP with different sizes could be used to prop the hydraulic fracture to different widths. The average apparent density of UDP is as low as 1.044 g cm⁻³, and it can be suspended in the fracturing fluid for a long time. The strain in the UDP is higher than that in the ceramsite and quartz sand, but its crushing ratio is far below theirs; therefore, the conductivity of the fracture propped by UDP was higher than that of quartz sand and ceramsite. The solubility of UDP in kerosene, reservoir water, and hydrochloric acid is below 1%, indicating that the UDP is also suitable for acid fracturing with proppant. All the experimental results proved that the self-suspending ultra-low density proppant has great potential use in hydraulic fracturing and acid fracturing.

A Framework for Economically Optimal Operation of Explosive Waste Incineration Process to Reduce NOx Emission Concentration

Explosives, especially those used for military weapons, have a short lifespan and their performance noticeably deteriorates over time. These old explosives need to be disposed of safely. Fluidized bed incinerators (FBIs) are safe for disposal of explosive waste (such as TNT) and produce fewer gas emissions compared to conventional methods, such as the rotary kiln. However, previous studies on this FBI process have only focused on minimizing the amount of NOx emissions without considering the operating and unitality costs (i.e., total cost) associated with the process. It is important to note that, in general, a number of different operating conditions are available to achieve a target NOx emission concentration and, thus, it requires a significant computational requirement to compare the total costs among those candidate operating conditions using a computational fluid dynamics simulation. To this end, a novel framework is proposed to quickly determine the most economically viable FBI process operating condition for a target NOx concentration. First, a surrogate model was developed to replace the high-fidelity model of an FBI process, and utilized to determine a set of possible operating conditions that may lead to a target NOx emission concentration. Second, the candidate operating conditions were fed to the Aspen Plus™ process simulation program to determine the most economically competitive option with respect to its total cost. The developed framework can provide operational guidelines for a clean and economical incineration process of explosive waste.

Experimental and Numerical Study on Proppant Transport in a Complex Fracture System

Slickwater fracturing can create complex fracture networks in shale. A uniform proppant distribution in the network is preferred. However, proppant transport mechanism in the fracture network is still uncertain, which restricts the optimization of sand addition schemes. In this study, slot flow experiments are conducted to analyze the proppant placement in the complex fracture system. Dense discrete phase method is used to track the particle trajectories to study the transport mechanism into the branch. The effects of the pumping rate, sand ratio, sand size, and branch angle and location are discussed in detail. Results demonstrate that: (1) under a low pumping rate or coarse proppant conditions, the dune development in the branch depends on the dune geometry in the primary fracture, and a high proportion of sand can transport into the branch; (2) using a high pumping rate or fine proppants is beneficial to the uniform placement in the fracture system; (3) sand ratio dominates the proppant placement in the branch and passing-intersection fraction of a primary fracture; (4) more proppants may settle in the near-inlet and large-angle branch due to the size limit. Decreasing the pumping rate can contribute to a uniform proppant distribution in the secondary fracture. This study provides some guidance for the optimization of proppant addition scheme in the slickwater fracturing in unconventional resources.
