Au-Pd Bimetallic Nanocatalysts Incorporated into Carbon Nanotubes (CNTs) for Selective Oxidation of Alkenes and Alcohol

Efficient nitrophenol reduction with Noria-GO nanocomposite decorated with Pd-Cu nanoparticles

We report a facile approach to synthesize Pd-Cu nanoparticles immobilized on a Noria-GO nanocomposite for efficient nitrophenol reduction. The unique architecture of the Noria and the hydrophilic nature of GO contribute to the improved performance and structure of the resulting nanocomposite. The simple sol-immobilization approach employed NaBH4 as a reductant and polyvinyl alcohol as a capping agent to evenly decorate small Pd-Cu nanoparticles with a diameter of 1.4 nm on the Noria-GO surface. The prepared Pd-Cu@Noria-GO nanocomposite was utilized as a nanocatalyst in converting of nitrophenol to aminophenol using NaBH4 solution. Our Pd-Cu@Noria-GO nanocomposite exhibited superior catalytic efficacy with large conversion percentages, Kapp, and KAF values of 95%, 0.225 min-1, and 225 min-1g-1, respectively. X-ray photoemission spectroscopy confirmed the oxidation state of the prepared nanoparticles, and TEM findings demonstrated the homogenous decoration of Pd-Cu NPs on the Noria-GO surface. Additionally, the durability of the Pd-Cu@Noria-GO nanocomposite shown its potential as a robust and promising material for remediating organic contaminants. Our results indicate that Pd-Cu@Noria-GO nanocomposite can be an effective and sustainable approach for mitigating the hazards associated with nitrophenols.

Visible Light Induced Nano-Photocatalysis Trimetallic Cu0.5Zn0.5-Fe: Synthesis, Characterization and Application as Alcohols Oxidation Catalyst

Here, we report a visible light-induced-trimetallic catalyst (Cu0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4) prepared through green synthesis using Tilia plant extract. These nanomaterials were characterized for structural and morphological studies using powder x-ray diffraction (P-XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The spinel crystalline material was ~34 nm. In benign reaction conditions, the prepared photocatalyst oxidized various benzylic alcohols with excellent yield and selectivity toward aldehyde with 99% and 98%; respectively. Aromatic and aliphatic alcohols (such as furfuryl alcohol and 1-octanol) were photo-catalytically oxidized using Cu0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4, LED light, H2O2 as oxidant, 2 h reaction time and ambient temperature. The advantages of the catalyst were found in terms of reduced catalyst loading, activating catalyst using visible light in mild conditions, high conversion of the starting material and the recyclability up to 5 times without loss of the selectivity. Thus, our study offers a potential pathway for the photocatalytic nanomaterial, which will contribute to the advancement of photocatalysis studies.

Halloysite clay nanotubes with Fe–Al deposits for the oxidation of benzyl alcohol

Catalytic Activity of Ni Nanotubes Covered with Nanostructured Gold

Ni nanotubes (NTs) were produced by the template method in the pores of ion-track membranes and then were successfully functionalized with gold nanoparticles (Ni@Au NTs) using electroless wet-chemical deposition with the aim to demonstrate their high catalytic activity. The fabricated NTs were characterized using a variety of techniques in order to determine their morphology and dimensions, crystalline structure, and magnetic properties. The morphology of Au coating depended on the concentration of gold chloride aqueous solution used for Au deposition. The catalytic activity was evaluated by a model reaction of the reduction of 4-nitrophenol by borohydride ions in the presence of Ni and Ni@Au NTs. The reaction was monitored spectrophotometrically in real time by detecting the decrease in the absorption peaks. It was found that gold coating with needle-like structure formed at a higher Au-ions concentration had the strongest catalytic effect, while bare Ni NTs had little effect. The presence of a magnetic core allowed the extraction of the catalyst with the help of a magnetic field for reusable applications.

Bimetallic nanocomposite (Ag-Au, Ag-Pd, Au-Pd) synthesis using gum kondagogu a natural biopolymer and their catalytic potentials in the degradation of 4-nitrophenol

Bimetallic nanoparticles (BNPs) constitute two different metal elements and exhibit relatively superior mechanistic and catalytic efficacies owing to their synergistic functions over monometallic nanoparticles. In the present study various bimetallic Ag-Au, Ag-Pd, Au-Pd nanoparticles were synthesized using a natural biopolymer gum kondagogu (GK) as a reducing and capping agent, by a simple and cost-effective method. The synthesized BNPs when characterized using UV-vis spectroscopy revealed a specific surface plasmon resonance band (SPR) of each nanocomposite. The average particle size of Ag-Au, Ag-Pd, and Au-Pd BNPs was found to be 23 ± 10.3, 21 ± 7.6, and 23 ± 9.4 nm respectively based on transmission electron microscopy analysis. Surface morphology and functional groups on the gum matrix of GK-BNPs were analyzed by XRD and FT-IR respectively. The bimetallic nanocomposites were evaluated for their catalytic reduction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) to 4-aminophenol in the presence of NaBH₄. The kinetic studies performed, depicted rate constants for Ag-Au, Ag-Pd, and Au-PdNPs as 0.31, 0.39, and 0.28 min^-1 respectively. The catalytic efficiencies of three bimetallic nanocomposites were of the following order Ag-Pd > Ag-Au > Au-Pd. This study establishes the catalytic potentials of the three different bimetallic nanocomposites in the reduction of 4-NP an environmental pollutant, and the impact of their synergistic property.

Catalytic Oxidation of Benzyl Alcohol to Benzaldehyde on Au8 and Au6Pd2 Clusters: A DFT Study on the Reaction Mechanism

Density functional theory calculations were performed to investigate the reaction mechanism of the aerobic oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde catalyzed by Au and Au–Pd clusters. Two consecutive reaction mechanisms were examined with Au8 and Au6Pd2 clusters: (1) the oxidation of benzyl alcohol with dissociated O atoms on metal clusters generating benzaldehyde and H2O; and (2) oxidation with adsorbed oxygen molecules generating benzaldehyde and H2O2. The calculations show that the aerobic oxidation of benzyl alcohol energetically prefers to proceed in the former mechanism, which agrees with the experimental observation. We demonstrate that the role of Au centers around the activation of molecular oxygen to peroxide-like species, which are capable of the H–abstraction of benzyl alcohol. The roles of Pd in the Au6Pd2 cluster are: (1) increasing the electron distribution to neighboring Au atoms, which facilitates the activation of O2; and (2) stabilizing the adsorption complex and transition states by the interaction between positively charged Pd atoms and the π-bond of benzyl alcohol, both of which are the origin of the lower energy barriers than those of Au8.
